Allen Iverson? ..no wait don't hang up, I just need a second of your time

I've been mulling the idea of Iverson in green this year. I can hear the groans and heck no's coming through the screen (and it's hard to argue with those that are firmly "all set" with AI) but hear me out...

I'll begin by disclosing that I have always found Iverson to be an intriguing personality and consider myself a fan of his in good times and bad. I concede without hesitation that he can be frustrating, egocentric and pig headed. He is polorizing to say the least. In his day he was alot of things...trendsetter,role model (for better or worse), culteral icon, problem child, MVP, ballhog, workhorse, great teammate, bad teammate, scoring champ, rapper, compulsive gambler, alcoholic?, and now in his latest role aging veteran attempting to accept his limitations. Now I'm not sure anyone can be certain that AI is capable of embracing this last premise. He obviously could not the last few years, that is a fact.

Last year and the year before I would have said no way to looking him over. But in his current situation WE have all the cards. He has publicly stated (I know he has said this before) that he is aware of what his role will be going forward if he wants to continue in the league. If he doesn't accept the role Doc hands him...see ya, no harm no foul, no distraction. The vets on this team carry too much weight in Boston to let him be a distraction, and again if he becomes one...see ya later.  I think of this as similar to the Corey Dillon situation for the Pats a few years back, that worked out great because of the guys around him and what that team had already established. Randy Moss as well...for all his BS there was no way he was coming into that locker room and acting a fool, too many vets and an established "team" concept. I believe this to be the case with Iverson. He would conform to the Celtic team idiology because at this point he HAS to. He is officially on Marbury status...if he behaves and shows GM's and coaches he can trend towards coming off the bench as a vet (Stackhouse anyone?) and produce he can hang around for a few more years and even redeem some of the self respect and love he has lost along the way.

I know it's a stretch for some but picture him in green coming of the bench bringing it every time he hits the floor...sweet redemption at our delight. Not saying it will happen but it very easily could, in my book its worth the try.

Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.

Vet min, OK but

cut him if he don’t tow the company line. I however think we could get Tmac for the same price. I would prefer him over AI, but vet mins are vet mins. Low risk and maybe, just maybe a high reward.

I’ve considered Tmac as well but he just does not even attempt to get to the rim anymore. His game gets further and further away from the basket as age and injuries have taken their toll. Defensively he is average at best…he is on his way to being Michael Finley. AI has alot to prove and one would expect him to come out hungry when given a chance. You hit the nail on head though, low risk and just maybe high reward.

I think DA has looked at the aging vets available

I’d be more in favor of TMac than AI especially if we sign Nate. I can’t imagine Danny not bringing in a proven scorer to anchor the bench. In all honesty I’d love to find a way to bring Delonte back as a combo guard but I think Gilbert will keep him, if anything for his choice in women ;)

agree on bringing delonte back..

what the celts badly needed during the finals was there 3’s when allen went lights out. they used to have House out there, and delonte help in that dept., but i also do believe the cavs will keep him.

Id take AI...

for a 1 year veteran minimum contract in a heart beat….imagine him and Nate coming off the bench, wow that would be some offensive fire power offense duo.

a.i. is not a SG

like what detroit, memphis& philli made him to be but ill take him on the vet min also as a plan B if nate dosent return

kgs influence

if ai doesnt behave and is a distraction, then u cut him but that wont happen cuz kg has brought a team first mentality to the celtics and there is no way kg is going to let ai ruin dat. i think the talent is there with ai but he just needs to prove he is commited to winning and being a team player.

Which he has not been able to do the last few years and that is the rub…I just feel he has alot of pride and a little bit more to prove. Hopefully he could flush some demons and get back to going for poeple’s throat. Just what we need on the second unit.

Matt Barnes???

Apparently Barnes will announce his decision tomorrow and the Celtics are on his short list. Barnes is someone I’d love to come here butthe contract is important and I think he’ll get more$ & years elsewhere

AI is worth a chance with our locker room

Consider how Stephon Marbury acted while in green. He was an upstanding citizen. Albeit he lost his mind when the off season started last year!

I can see AI being influenced by the vet culture of the Celts. If he come is at vet minimum and acts responsibly, he would be a tremendous asset.

$

he should come nd the vet minimum is a low price for him !!!

I used to love Shawn Kemp back in the early 90’s…he was a beast.

even if he could produce, it wouldnt make sense to bring him in because of the signing of avery bradley and the most likely re-signing of nate robinson. what would he be? a 3rd string undersized sg?

by EmilioBonilla on Jul 15, 2010 5:24 PM EDT reply actions

he would be a scorer to pair with either one of them in the backcourt. In my opinion that is what we are missing…an aggressive offensive minded player on the second unit.

It does make sense because Bradley is a rookie, who knows what he brings as he adjusts to the NBA game. He can play the point at times giving different looks with the second linups that looks something like

1. Nate (Bradley) (AI)
2. AI (Ray) (Bradley)
3. Ray (Paul/Danielsif he’s still here by some miracle)
4. BBD (Paul)
5. O’niell/Perk

He actually gives quite a bit of diversity in terms of how you could attack teams…the more I think about it the more I like it.

by DJlives on Jul 15, 2010 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

sure, why not?

Come off the bench against second or third stringers, put a little pep in the game, stay sane or get dropped.

The one thing that AI can’t be really criticized for is his drive and love of the game (but not practice).

Do you think he will get more than the vet minimum at thi point?

I don’t know what he is thinking but I would imagine he would want to put himself in a good situation surrounded by good players with a chance to win…but then again this hasn’t been his forte, you know putting himself in a good situation. Im hoping he truly means what he says at this point and finally gets it. Vet minimum to run with all these cagey vets to rebuild your rep on a championship contender…sounds good on paper at least!

if we get tmac... 4th hs draftee in the team

tmac is better option for me than AI. and he will be the 4th boston player on the roster to come out from high school… KG, Perk, J. Oneil and now Tmac.
