C's Interested In West

Delonte West could interest Celtics - Celtics Blog - Boston.com

The Celtics have been seeking a tough-minded defender to replace Tony Allen, now that he signed with the Memphis Grizzlies. And according to a source, their interest could spread to former Celtic Delonte West, who is expected to be waived by the Minnesota Timberwolves after the club acquired him in a trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers Monday.

If anyone understands his issues, its the Celtics.  He's got tremendous baggage but if he can keep it together he could help.  That's a big "if" though.

Perhaps Delonte is the low-cost shooter that Ainge is looking for...

team president Danny Ainge said he's still looking to make a couple more additions, particularly a shooter and a big man.

I'd be all for resigning Delonte....

and if we do, I think it’d be a mortal lock that Edgar grabs him in round 1 of the 2010 Celticsblog draft. W00-hoo!

But delonte is best player available

WAY better than Eddie, despite his mental health issues.

by nba is the worst on Jul 27, 2010 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

Eddie can shoot, that’s it. Delonte can shoot albeit not as well but he can defend the one and the two, get to the basket, dribble without losing it and he’s part ginger.

+2

Eddie is not even what he used to be, his jumper is gone, he’s useless now.

by hpantazo on Jul 27, 2010 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions

+4... but...

You’re wrong on the “not as well” line. Eddie has this aura that he never misses, but he’s a career 39% 3-pt shooter. He’s streaky, so people see him knock down 4 threes in a row in games, and think that happens all the time. It doesn’t.

West is just over 37% in his career from 3, pretty comparable numbers shooting wise. His overall FG% on his career is actually better than Eddie (46 compared to 41%) and he’s better than Eddie is just about every other way.

It does say in the piece looking for a tough minded defender to replace TA

House is not that, delonte on the other hand while may have mor baggage but has been consistently the 2nd best player on the cavs on both sides of the ball. He has at times covered rondo as good as anyone could hope to.
While I may like Eddie better as far as the personality he shows publicly and has a better stroke, west is a better all around player who can also shoot.

by Warrior Spirit on Jul 27, 2010 5:12 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Pick Up Delonte -

He would be a good pick up for the Celtics believe it or not , 6’4 SG that can handle the ball at point sometimes , shoots 3’s , and a tuff defender , way better player all around then Tony was + u could never have enough depth .

All that got me worried is the way he acts of the court .

by fRANKZILa 2 1 on Jul 27, 2010 5:11 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Delonte West is so much better than Eddie House at basketball the debate isn’t even nescessary. People here act like Delonte didn’t play for the Celtics for 3 years without problems and was loved by teammates, coaches, management and was a fan favorite.

by dpaps on Jul 27, 2010 5:14 PM EDT reply actions

totally on point

Delonte is so much more talented than Eddie – the comparison is absurd. Eddie is a fan favorite, but skill wise, he is a 1 dimensional aging shooter with limited defensive ability, a height problem, no handle, and can’t create his own shot. Delonte is a solid all around shooting guard with significantly better than average offensive skills.

by jakeshuttlesworth on Jul 27, 2010 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

lots of guys have off-court issues

but Delonte would fit in well here and be a much needed piece off the bench.

Agree 100%

The DELONTE and ROBINSON duo off the bench could be dynamite.

The 2 of them on the court with their shooting abilities would spread the floor big time on offense.

On defense the both of them with their young legs and energy would be tenacious.

Imagine the turnovers the both of them could produce and resulting fast break opportunities with both guards being able to dribble up the court …instead of having to look for just one guard to push the ball down the court.

WOW… that duo could be very exciting to watch off the bench.

I hope Danny can get him !

by fordescort on Jul 27, 2010 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions

sounds like we have little competion for him

Celtics probably understand Delonte better than other teams, and will be willing to take the risk associated with his issues. I see a deal getting done here, and I would be all for it. Low risk, good reward.

by footey on Jul 27, 2010 5:29 PM EDT reply actions

by Ante Gamisou on Jul 27, 2010 5:32 PM EDT reply actions

So....Why doesn't Minnesota want him?

You wouldn’t want a guy who has micro-fracture of the knee just because he used to be good. Delonte has a micro-fracture in the head. Minnesota isn’t passing on his game. His game is good as comments note. But that is a real, REAL warning sign. Cleveland dumps him and Minny can’t wait to dump him and he’s a good player.

I’d take Eddie. Good team man. Good family man. More fun on a roll to watch than anyone.

by Wildblu1 on Jul 27, 2010 5:34 PM EDT reply actions

I’m not sure that I want Delonte back. I really loved the guy when he was here. But we are a different team now. Is he the lock down defender we need to replace TA. Maybe. However, I think I’d rather have Jarvis Hayes. Hayes is 6’8" and a SF type player. We have enough short guards – Rondo, Bradley, Nate. We only have PP and Quizy at SF and Quisy is not a shooter. Last year in the plafoffs we could have used another good outside shooter to spread the court.

One issue, I keep bringing up is that we only have so many roster spot – 15. We have already filled 12 – which includes Erden, Bradley and Sheed. I belive that Harangody make the team, which I’m surprised to be saying. I didn’t think much of him in college but he can play. That leaves us 2 roster spots barring a trade – A big and and wing. I just don’t see Delonte filling the wing position. SG/PG yes, but not a SF too small.

by badax33 on Jul 27, 2010 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions

by guava_wrench on Jul 28, 2010 12:43 AM EDT up reply actions

by Warrior Spirit on Jul 28, 2010 3:14 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

he's not running for president, he's playing basketball

If being a “good family man” mattered at all, Kobe would retire ringless, as would most NBA players. House is useless to this team now. Delonte is an excellent player who can create his own shot, play tough defense, and is fearless in the clutch. The only player on the cavs to ever step up in crunch time other than lebron.

by hpantazo on Jul 27, 2010 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions

He has an mostly unguaranteed contract.

Only $500,000 is guaranteed. Besides that, the Wolves don’t need Delonte and Beasley on the same team when David Kahn + are trying to convince that we’re a professional, nice team.

by Master Po on Jul 27, 2010 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Let me get this right. We pick up Delonte for nothing

This is a guy who the majority even here probably feels is as good as Ray when Ray is having an average game.

Frankly Id have a hard time believing we can find a better back up for PP and Ray than DW. I don’t mean wishing and hoping I mean actually getting a better player. If Sheed returns or we sign Shaq, this is the first 11:

JO Sheed/Shaq Perk
KG Baby
PP Marquis
Ray West
Rondo Nate

I think thats a better team than any recent Champ

Is DW going to be a time bomb? Thats the only problem

by wahz on Jul 27, 2010 5:52 PM EDT reply actions

Like him But

I wouldn’t be real upset with bringing DW back but it would put our roster at 13 not 11. You left out Bradley and Erden. Also, I’m semi counting Harangody and that would make 14. And we still need another big and we could really use another shooter at SF that would make 16, So barring a trade, I just don’t see us signing Delonte. Now if we did a S&T for Shaq with Cleve using BBD, then we’d open up a roster spot and it would be a GREAT signing! Don’t want to use Sheed’s contract for Shaq. Not unless it includes Parker or Moon.

by badax33 on Jul 27, 2010 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Bradley is not yet signed is he?

Nothing stopping us from shipping out erden and $ for a conditional 2nd rounder to free up a spot. I think it would seem pretty obvious to ship of erden in any sheed trade to get another spot open.

At this point realistically having thought it over, with what is left for bigs yeah boon may have some young skill but I think I would rather convince sheed to return rather than s & t for shaq, delonte included in that deal was the kicker for me anyhow, which leaves one spot open if we sign harangody and keep erden. Realistically I would go after Battier 1st, but I don’t think Houston goes for it unless it is sheed, erden, a pick and cash which I would still do. But if that could not happen, dlonte or jhoward are the best options left available. Rudy would also be nice but you have to trade for him and he is not known for d.
If delonte will sign here for what we can offer you do it, and quick.

by Shots on Jul 27, 2010 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions

True

His offcourt problems may work in our favor to make him sign for vet min for a year to prove to the rest of the league he is no starbury headcase. What does it hurt, best both sideof the ball player I can think of becoming available, and another energy guy off the bench. Returning to a former home and fanbase and chasing a ring to stick it to the king. All works in our favor.

Delonte was always one of my favorites

Wiyaaah hangaaaah!

Delonte would be a very nice backup for Ray. We could finally get Ray’s minutes down. I think the Nate/West second unit back court could be a small but dynamic one. I’m all for bringing him back if he’ll take minimum salary. We honestly can’t do better than DWest for minimum.

by Mencius on Jul 27, 2010 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

He is not that small folks

Agree, not doing any better than delonte for min, even Josh Howard is a wash, may have slightly better offense, but also slightly worse d than west, plus Howard comin off an injury. The more I think about it, the more delonte feels like a no brainer.

by WarriorWe on Jul 27, 2010 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I know Delonte is not short

He’s not real tall by SG standards either, and he’s slight of build. The larger point was that combined with the very small Nate, it’d make a fairly small backcourt. But I’m all for bringing Delonte back. He’d be great value at the minimum.

by Mencius on Jul 27, 2010 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree

Delonte just like Nate though not a big guard plays defense so well that it makes up for his lack of size….unlike say someone like Eddie House who is a small guard and does not defend as well.

Also Delonte does have a nice strong build that lets him play bigger guards on defense rather well, so lack of size for him I think is not a real serious issue at all.

by fordescort on Jul 27, 2010 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t agree that he has a strong build when compared to his peers. But I don’t worry too much about that from the bench.

Tsk tsk tsk.

That said, I’d love to not have to hate this guy. Read up on him a while back, since I haven’t been following the NBA for longer than a bunch of years, and I must say that I’ve liked him ever since. I don’t care about his issues; I’d love to see a high energy player on the court.

I’d rather see Bradley get the minutes and actually be developed than give West any minutes. He can’t back up PP cause he’s only 6’4" so he backs up Ray? SHANE BATTIER is perfect for the Wing

uh… Cmon people… SHANE BATTIER! (via Sign + Trade for Rasheed if necessary)

-a team player
-not selfish
-very defensive minded!
(able to fit into the Celt’s System with ease)
-high Basketball IQ
-Length
-able to be a rebounder amongst the bigs
-very ATHLETIC
-a 3pt threat
-can drive and score in the paint

Shane Battier is just an amazing all around defender, especially on the WING (where the celts are weak right now)

A physical, lock-down defender, one of the few capable of individually shutting down Kobe and Bron offense. That’s not a feeling either… That’s proof on the film.

Get Shane Battier for the wing, and tell Shaq he can play off the bench for the Vet. Min. contract on a championship-worthy team. And tell him to just focus on rebounds and no EGO.

If these two happen… chances are good that Banner 18 comes next year…
Even if Celt’s get Shane and no Shaq… their chances at a Championship are significantly better…

The Best to play the game:
1. Jordan
2. Bird
3. Kobe
4. Russell
5. Magic

by TriniDJboy on Jul 27, 2010 6:39 PM EDT reply actions

Great

However, Houston would have to agree to it. Not sure they will. I sure wouldn’t! Battier can play, he’s a great defender and a reliable scorer and his contract expires after this year. Doesn’t make sense to me. I know, once Sheed retires they get an immediate write off. But I think Sheed is going to want a little walking away money to officially retire. If he does’t officially retire there is no cap savings.

Id be all for the C's signing Delonte.....

I think it would be a great solid pick up.

Delonte would give the C’s a tough nosed defender off the bench against small wing players that they sorely need now that TA is gone.

He is also still a young player and considering the C’s are a old team , they could use a touch of young blood and fresh legs that Delonte would bring us.

The plus also if the C’s are looking at Delonte to replace TA is that he is much better ball handler and shooter then TA was.

Pros: 1. Above Average and scrappy Defender – almost as good as Tony Allen, but
better, IMO, than TA because opposing teams cannot cheat off of Delonte on
defense. He will torch them if they try it.

           2. As a starter or backup in CLE – look at the stats I posted here from
               NBA.com:

          3. If my link opens, those 08-09 and 09-10 stats look good to me – especially the yr
              he came off the bench.

Cons? The off-court issues are a reason for concern, but place him here in our environment and I know he will be fine. His best years in the NBA were in Boston.

Basketball-wise, I think he is a 6’3" Tony Allen, but a much better shooter, with 3-range
as well. He may not be as explosive as TA, but his all-around offensive game is slightly better, I think.

C’mon back home, Delonte!!

depends on his mental state

basketball-wise, this would be a no-brainer. of course, basketball-wise, delonte would never have been traded (and soon to be released thereafter) in the first place. the man has a real mental illness. if we think its not going to be a problem, sure, definitely sign him. if we aren’t sure, that’s a whole other story.

What are those 'issues' anyway?

People keep talking West comes with a heavy baggage. What’s inside that baggage? Is his baggage bigger than Marbury’s?

by getthat18now on Jul 27, 2010 10:35 PM EDT reply actions

he has bipolar disorder

It’s very manageable if he sticks to his treatment. Many people live very good, productive lives with it. On the other hand, if he doesn’t stick to the treatment, he may end up swirving through traffic on his motorcycle while carrying a weapons arsenal again.

by hpantazo on Jul 28, 2010 12:07 AM EDT up reply actions

That's something to be careful of

Will patients with this disorder suddently blow up and hurt people around? That could be potentially dangerous as players often in pressure situations, such as arguing calls with the refs.

by getthat18now on Jul 28, 2010 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions

I really doubt his arguing will be as bad as Sheed’s was.

by guava_wrench on Jul 28, 2010 12:54 AM EDT up reply actions

It seems to me that you all have no idea exactly what you are talking about. Bipolar disorder is different for everyone, some have it harder than others. The crux of it is that you feel your emotions more than others, your highs and lows are more potent. In actuality the motorcycl incident seems more likely to be a quite stupid poor decision than due to bipolar, as it does not cause paranoid delusions unless in the most severe cases, and if he were in one of those most severe cases he would not be able to handle the stresses of pro ball.
The way to medicate bipolar is to take meds that make you feel no emotions, it dulls all feelings, so if he is taking them h is quite not likely to blow up on anyone even a ref.
It seems to me that he is just fine on the court, he just seems to need focus or needs to feel apprecieatd during the offseason so he doenst have a deprssion moment, the celtics pursuing him could be just what he needs. Now if he does not get pursued and depression follows then he may make another stupid mistake.
Bottom line he isn’t gonna kill anyone or hurt anyone and as long as you give him positive reinforcement wih any constructive critisisms the team has he will be fine and the perfect fit here as his game is just what we need.

Mental defectives are hard to get rid of

because they don’t think anything is wrong with them.
or, if they blow, it can hurt a workplace for awhile, especially a team.

Delonte is well aware of his emotional problems.

by guava_wrench on Jul 28, 2010 12:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Go for it...losing the stigma of mental illness is HARDER to get rid of

Delonte is certainly aware of his mental illness. His mental illness is treatable. I’m sure he’s also aware that his judgement is not the best (and his judgement is a totally separate issue) and he’d be on a short leasah whereever he goes.

His skills are a match for what the C’s need. He’d be cheap and if he can’t cut it hed be easy to drop. If West is up for it I’d be surprised if the C’s don’t sign him over a SG who can no longer shoot in Eddie House. ….Now if Fernadez can be had it may be a different story.

po

who can ever forget skippy? telfair was another beaut. iwas and still am a very loyal delonte man and feel real bad about his probable bipolar stuff. i just think he needs some time away from all of the hullaballoo that goes with major sports and the pressures of the game to reclaim himself. not now for the c’s, now for dwest to get his life together.

Who loses more games to injury, Daniels or West?

by guava_wrench on Jul 28, 2010 12:55 AM EDT reply actions

Are You kidding me

Delonte West is always on injured reserve. If its not his head, its his wrist, or his back.

OH MY!!

Ok – I may have to take back my comments about Delonte not being as explosive as TA……look what DWest did to Josh Smith, just a few months ago:

DOOO ITT

Don’t forget, this guy was swapping the starting PG role with Rondo before he was traded…the guy can flat out ball, it sucks he was thrown into the LeBron circus for a couple years. The guy is gonna bleed green no matter what, and I don’t see him nailin’ Ray Rays mom anytime soon.

Don't forget DOOO ITT

Rondo was in his rookie season in 2006 DOOOITT It was Delonte’s 3rd year in the league.
How has it worked out for Delonte compared to Rondo since then?

by Celtics9Lakers2 on Jul 28, 2010 1:45 AM EDT reply actions

Delonte big mistake

what about Deshawn Stevenson?
better defense

by Osyz on Jul 28, 2010 5:11 AM EDT reply actions

Guys... He's cheap.

Like LeBron’s mom, Delonte can be had for the minimum which is all the Celtics have available to sign players with! While there is clearly a group of players at the 2 that are far better than West, they also want to get paid more than the minimum. Delonte might be the best option available for the money, which is what you need to think of…

NO dont want the terminator back!

like delonte the player but he has some mental issues, id keep away.

talk about portland upping their attempts to trade rudy fernandez with boston, chicago and new york his 3 prefered spots. id love to add him, at 25, 6’6 tall, good shooter and can play PG, SG, SF, he’d be a great versitle fit. problem is how do we get him? can we trade cash and a pick for him as he only makes $1.4m i think

"Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

im gonna be all up on you like a spider monkey!

i can just see delonte west winning a game of poker against lebron, throwing down the cards he yells, "who's your daddy!"...."oh, sorry man"

by remembering9ergods on Jul 28, 2010 11:54 AM EDT reply actions

it will never happen

it makes too much sense and he is too good, the c’s would rather have a bum like daniels and bring eddie house back. while i like eddie, he does not play defense and his better days are behind him. delonte would be great but as i said danny will blow it!
