EASY WING answer!! (DANNY..... CALL CUBAN!!!)
Simplest ( and easiest) answer to how to use Sheed's contract to upgrade the bench/bring in good talent...is for DA to pick up the phone, call Dallas and offer Sheed's contract (possibly that 1st or 2nd rd pick) for extra cap relief towards the still loaded 2011 FA ( and cuban loves his top fa's) ...for Shawn Marion (locked up for 4 yrs, an elite defender/rebounder......and demoted to the bench this upcoming season behind Caron Butler/Roddy Beaubois)....and plenty of wing depth already (Barea,Jet Terry, Stevenson, etc)
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=2f8c78u
With plenty of minutes to go around for a defender ( and scorer) of marion's caliber, Marion would have no issues accepting a similar role with the C's ( as opposed to the Mavs where there arent strong personalities like PP/KG to help him adopt the team concept towards getting that 18th banner)......the move would make Quis a more effenctive SG(than sf) and make Marion an EASY 6th man of the year candidate.............but lemme know what ya think C's Fans!!!! Go Celts!!
Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.

Dallas wouldn't do it.
Mark Cuban is willing to do (and spend) whatever it takes to win. He wouldn’t just trade away their starting SF for cap space.
NO chance w/ Butler with him starting in big D
Cuban will do whatever it takes to make a winner in big d…yeah Zak…. but READ the POST……he wont be their starting SF next yr, and if you get demoted outta the starting lineup on a loaded team ( in a tough western conference) like dallas, a “fresh approach” can always be looked at as an opening for a team like Boston (with needs & and expiring contract they can move)……….Butler WOULD be nice mrboston…… but Marion’s hard nosed defense ( and REBOUNDING…… which killed boston in the finals)…..would be JUST the “medicine” the Dr. ordered for this offseason….not to mention getting EASILY full value for Sheed’s contract with a former all-star locked up for 4 yrs…..
I did read the post
The Mavericks lineup is something like this
PG: Jason Kidd/Roddy B/JJ Barea ( I’m actually not sure who there back up is out of those 2)
SG: Caron Butler/Jason Terry/Roddy B/ DeShawn Stevenson
SF: Shawn Marion/Caron Butler/Tim Thomas
PF: Dirk Nowitzki/Shawn Marion/Tim Thomas
C: Brendan Haywood/ Tyson Chandler/ Dirk Nowitzki
So trading away Marion for cap space does nothing good for that team. It weakens their bench as well as making them less athletic.
But
The deal doesn’t improve Dallas at all. Marion is going to be the 6th or 7th man and Dallas plays a lot of small ball too, and Marion fits in perfect with that when they put him at the 4 spot and slide Dirk over to the 5.
But...........
With marion on the bench, Haywood @ the 5 and dirk @ the 4, Carlisle has no need for an undersized 4(he’s like a beasley @ PF)…..and IF a 1st rounder (w/ sheed’s contract)is required, dallas would have a field day choosing a just-as talented 3-4 (@#20…the c’s avg pick) to replace marion after 1 yr and use the savings to spend, spend, spend on more free agents to further bolster the mavs’ roster……while the c’s have the all-star backup we need to give pp/ra & even KG (going small) much needed rest…w/o giving up Baby Davis in other possibilities to ensure a FRESH C’s starting 5 (and a FORMIDABLE bench Marion,Shrek & donkey, Bradley, JO,etc) for the playoffs……
My point is Dallas plays a lot of small ball. Marion can play either forward spot on that team and be successful. Also ESPN has him as the starting SF, with Butler as the starting SG. I’m wondering who you have starting over him because outside of Chandler, Dallas is weak in the frontcourt as far as their bench is concerned.
Terry is a SG/PG, and Stevenson and Jones aren’t better options to start over him. Plus I’m not sure, but Dallas is well over the salary cap so I don’t see just getting Marion off the books allowing them to get an equal talent to his, even if at this point in his career he is a bit overpaid. I like the idea, but I just don’t see it realistically happening because Dallas doesn’t get anything out of it except for a downgrade in talent and slightly less salary.
I agree...
Dumping Marion’s salary won’t help Dallas’ cap situation this year at all (they’re currently $28M OVER the cap), so there’s no value to moving him for an expired contract. Chandler and Butler expire after this year, but I can’t see where the Mavs will get a better player than Marion for $8M.
If this off-season has taught Celtics fans anything, it’s that productive players who aren’t “rookies” OR “over the hill” OR have “significant questions” cost money.
