Shaq and Kwame Brown Still of Interest to Celtics

The Celtics took another step in their offseason retooling yesterday by signing free agent guard Von Wafer. However, a need for another big man still exists, and Kwame Brown and Shaquille O'Neal are still possibilities, according to ESPN's Marc Stein:

Shaquille O'Neal and Kwame Brown. Those two haven't shown up in the same sentence too often over the years, but they're linked on this occasion because they both remain on the radar of the Boston Celtics.

The East champs, even after the recent signing of Jermaine O'Neal, still want one more big man after inching to the brink of a full roster with Thursday's signing of guard Von Wafer.

The problem? The Celtics only have minimum money left. Sources say they're having trouble getting Brown to accept those wages, so you can imagine where Shaq stands on the idea.

At least that was the last report I saw. They were taking the weekend to discuss something with somebody. How’s that for forgetful vagueness?

Better than nothing.

If Kwame is the only one willing to take the minimum, then yes.

I think both are going to wait until the last possible moment to see if anyone comes in with a better offer though.

But really, has there ever been two players so delusional in thinking their worth way more than they are? Oh we also got Tmac and AI still floating out there thinking their more than minimum players. Ugh, idiots. Swallow your pride and just play ball to win ya bums.

Tired of has beens and never-was’s holding out for more money, you don’t need it, you’re lucky the be playing for the 1.2mil any team will give you.

by JaimeP on Jul 30, 2010 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions

still depends on money, laying time requests, etc...

shaq wants 20 or more minutes and $8m a season. he can get the minutes at the start of the season but if and when perkins comes back he wont be able too. as for the money, the only way to do that is to trade rasheed for him in a sign and trade and i dont want to do that. in fact, even though i think shaq is still valuable at times, i dont think he’s worth more than $4m a season. he wants to sign for the vet min or take between $3-4m in a sign in trade involving another player than fine, add him, if not take kwame for the min. then trade sheed at the deadline for something good

not really thrilled with either

Brown has had an extremely underwhelming career and would just be a live body to put on the court in a pinch. Shaq is way over the hill. he’s old and slow. his D is marginal at this point and his O isn’t all that great (never thought it was very good to begin with—-talk about someone that enjoyed the star treatment from the refs)

by slamtheking on Jul 30, 2010 5:01 PM EDT reply actions

However...

He can’t do much on a Basketball court, and he has probably the worst hands in Basketball. But he rebounds pretty well, and can still defend.

For about 10 minutes a game, it could be worse.

by k.diddy on Jul 30, 2010 5:55 PM EDT up reply actions

delusional?

I recommend going back to look at his games from his younger days. watch the moving feet and the way he just slammed into people. the guy was usually a moving violation or committing what should have been called offensive fouls. throw in the fact he can’t hit anything outside of 8 feet. put that together and I consider him to be one of the most coddled (and thus overrated) players ever.

his D in his younger days was good and can’t knock his defensive rebounding but on offense, much of his scoring prowess was permitted by the refs not calling violations or fouls on him.

by no kidding on Jul 30, 2010 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think we can afford to not overpay if we want to make it likely we can win the title

a Rudy, Perk, Rondo, Bradley, Baby young core is a good start when you are going to clear cap space in a big way in two years. But that core needs Rudy. Of course you have to be high on Rajon, think baby is getting better, think Perk is solid defensively agaisnt those who matter and think Rudy and Bradley will pan out. Id cough up next year s first and Id be sorely tempted to send another on in 3. Rudy becomes your pick next year, and in 3 years you can sign a free agent and use the mle as you can after that

Look at it this way: Mia is gonna be able to add an mle player year after year…how long do we have before they are just so laoded we have no shot at all?? I think the answer is two years is all we have; not one year more than that. We HAVE to do whatever we can now. OVERPAY NOW if you have to…

Almost - that is indeed close to how we will do it.

Doc told me about it the other day when we were chatting over iced teas.

He said, “I think that, when we play the Heat, that I will bench Paul, Ray, Rajon & KG. I’m pretty psyched about our deep bench. I think that JO should be the only starter that I’ll need. Hell, in fact I’ll even take them on 3-on-5. I’ll just send JO out their with Von & Kwame!”

Doc thought about it for a moment more, stirring his iced tea with his straw, looked up at me and then said, “Nah … that’s too risky. I’ll send Nate out there on the floor too.”

If I’m Shaq, I look at how many rings Kobe has, and I want to catch up. Particularly if I can beat him in the Finals to get it. I know that’s not everything, but when you have that much money, I think legacy is next in line on the priority list.

My thought is this:

He has clearly joined teams looking for rings recently. He did that TV show where it was him versus different athletes in their sports. He cares about how he is perceived. I think he joins another team that is a contender.

Does that mean I understand him? No way. Just trying to read the tea leaves here.

No offense intended, Bridgeloan.

Your guess on what Shaq would do is probably as good as mine. And we both might be way off.

But if I was Shaq, and worried about how I was perceived, then I wouldn’t have made the movie Kazaam.

by no kidding on Jul 30, 2010 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions

He may be old, slow and smelly, but...

…Shaq’s presence alone has to be worth something. Just for intimidation purposes, we need someone with some beef and man he has beef.

He needs to be a roll player for the minimum, but that would give Doc quite a few combinations to use with KG, Jamaine, Baby… length and bulk. The second unit could spread the floor for a perfect post game.

What we need him to do is use his size (to clog the paint, grab rebounds and intimidate) when we meet the Heat and Lakers.

by Rashi_S on Jul 30, 2010 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Shaq should sign right away!

Take the vet minimum from the Celtics! The longer he waits, the more pitiful he becomes. Because waiting for weeks when no team is willing to pay him more than the minimum then ends up still signing the minimum would make him look foolish! At least think of the media hype if he signs with the C’s!

ummmm

i keep on reading these post from people and i think people forget that the Celtics still have Kendrick Perkins. Perkins will be back for the second half so what would the Celtics do with 3 centers (if you include shaq) who are used to being starting centers. it is a way better fit to sign a kwame brown, earl barron or josh boone to fill in that 4 or 5 big while perk is out. have one of those guys share time of the bench with BBD, harangody and Erden at the back-up “big” position. and when perk comes back you have jermaine o’neal of the bench and no need for another big off the bench other than BBD, unless it is for short minutes.

by gabe pruitt on Jul 30, 2010 7:29 PM EDT reply actions

People aren't forgetting Perkins.

It’s just that the chances of his coming back from surgery for this year’s playoffs and being anything like fully recovered is highly problematic. Lots of guys have tried the same thing and failed.

Perkins is an important asset to the Celtics, and no one here wants to see him jeopardize his future by rushing anything. But meanwhile, the window is surely closing for the Big Three. So it’s only natural to figure that Perkins won’t make it back this year, and to go get somebody to rent like Shaq.

by no kidding on Jul 30, 2010 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

We aren't forgetting - we also know that JO is a very good PF

and so the return of Perkins allows JO to slide over and provide more minutes at PF behind KG. But long before you get Perkins back, you need him to provide SOME minutes there to keep KG fresh for the playoffs. So you want a quality veteran C that you can trust in the post. BBD is a great situational big, but you have to pick your spots to use him at either position.

Having extra quality bigs is a huge thing in the playoffs – fouls to give are such an important part of the game then.

And Harangody is almost certainly NOT going to be part of the C/PF big man rotation. Harangody is more of a ‘power 3’. He probably can play PF situationally, but I would definitely not count on him being part of the regular big man rotation. Especially as a rookie.

With our current roster, I expect Harangody to be rotating in mostly behind Pierce and Daniels. Probably used situationally when Doc wants a little more beef and outside shooting at that position than Daniels provides.

by mmmmm on Jul 30, 2010 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I know that the "XL" on Shaq's jersey doesn't refer to its size ...

nonetheless, it led me to think about how long it’s probably been since Shaq wore something as small as an XL — and I’m not saying that to make fun of him, just observing.

Anyway, I think it would be great to land Shaq. Yes, Perkins will be back at some point, but it’s misguided for anyone to think that he’ll be back to 100% when he steps on the court for the first time next season (remember how long it took Garnett to get back to form? and that wasn’t even as serious an injury as what Perk has). Besides, the Perk/KG/Davis/Sheed combo wasn’t enough length & size against the Lakers, so I can’t see how Perk/KG/Davis/JO will be enough — face it, we need more size and length, as much as we can get our hands on, and Shaq provides plenty of both — not to mention he’s the best remaining option on the market. Sign-and-trade with Cleveland; make it happen, Danny.

by rocknrollforyoursoul on Jul 30, 2010 7:33 PM EDT reply actions

valid point

but who do you bump out of that group of perk/davis/kg/oneal/shaq. all i am saying is that kwame is what he is but one thing he can do is rebound. and he wouldn’t disrupt the chemistry and want more playing time when there at least 3 players ahead of you on the depth chart.

by gabe pruitt on Jul 30, 2010 7:42 PM EDT reply actions

Fair point - my position is that we need to get either of these guys.

Shaq physically is a bettter option than Kwame because he brings some offensive skills that Kwame doesn’t ahve. But he would need to understand his role with crystal clarity. And you are correct that Kwame would probably accept that role more naturally.

by mmmmm on Jul 30, 2010 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe not Danny but...

Perhaps Danny should not be talking to Shaq, but KG, PP, RA and JO should. If they are happy with Shaq, and Shaq is happy with them, them Danny should do anything possible to get Shaq. If the aforementioned and Shaq cannot agree on roles (Ubuntu etc), then avoid Shaq. I personally think they will all be on the same page.

by Dipper on Jul 31, 2010 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

also

JO way better rebounder than Sheed is. And the length issue was really just a major issue in game 7 when perk was out

by gabe pruitt on Jul 30, 2010 7:43 PM EDT reply actions

You, too, make some good points

JO is indeed a rebounding upgrade over Sheed, and Shaq’s presence would create a logjam once Perk returns (presuming, of course, that Perk makes a full recovery and has no setbacks). It would be easy, I suppose, to push Kwame to the end of the bench upon Perk’s healthy return, but not so easy to do that with Shaq or even Baby.

I prefer Sheed to both of them!!

I’d rather have playoff Sheed to both Shaq and obviously Brown. I think there’s a real chance he’s not done and while I really didn’t enjoy his work between November and April, starting in Game 2 of the Cleveland series he was a real factor in our playoff success. Get Him back and now you have O’Neal, KG, Baby, Perk (when healthy) and Sheed as your bigs. Not to bad.

by roz80 on Jul 30, 2010 8:18 PM EDT reply actions

Sheed was huge against LA and he is better than both of them imho too

If we can’t have him, ok, Shaq is the next choice. Either way this window can only stay open to a reasonable degree if we have Shaq or Sheed, AND a guy like Rudy and yes we should pay pretty much whatever is needed. In 2 years Mia will only be better and deeper…we almost certainly won’t…

There is an outside shot that if somehow win the next two that Mia falls apart in chaos. Not likely but it won’t be pretty there; I say overpay now. We can have a younger core NOW and get through missing a draft pick or two

by wahz on Jul 30, 2010 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Big Questions in 2 Years

Lots to consider w/o even considering the possible lockout that could take place after next season. Miami will be very talented in 2 years but that’s all we know about them. We also know that the C’s will have an extremely friendly deal with Rondo, Pierce still on the team, and a lot of money to play with. Just because Miami looks to be more talented than we will be in 2 years does not mean that the C’s future isn’t all that bright. At the very least they will have options and hopefully the leagues best PG leading the way.

Id like to see Sheed back also.

Seeing Shaq sign a minimum deal to join Sheed would also be a nice, since it would make the C’s even deeper and more talented.

what a great farewell tour that would be for the big man. beating up on Kobe in green, what would be more sweeter to watch, and the motivation to beat the miami crew that didn’t want him back. I think he’d fit in well with the veteran’s moreso than he has in his last stint. Not sure if he would want to be the second O’neal off the bench though, but they can discuss that since it sounds like he’s been lobbying and it’s really the only final destination that makes sense for him contender-wise other than maybe oklahoma

Big Baby

I think it’s important to remember that Glen Davis filled in admirably for KG when KG was hurt, and that he wasn’t a part of the regular season rotation last year. KG is going to be healthy, and Big Baby is going to be able to play a lot of minutes this year to help fill the void left by Perk. If KG, BBD and JO stay healthy (I know that’s a big “IF”) by the time Perk gets back he’s going to be a big bonus. Having one of the best defensive centers come into a rotation as a bonus half-way through a season might just be enough…

I know that is a best case scenario, but my offseason glass is always half full. I don’t think the Celtics need Shaq, but a guy like Kwame Brown (who is young and athletic, even though he sucks) might be useful.

Sheed

And I agree with some of the posts here that having Sheed is better than Shaq and Brown, our offense needs a skilled big man with a perimeter shot more than our defense needs another slow big.

Not completely

It is a huge hole to not have our backup C settled yet, but we do have better perimeter shooting off the bench right now than we had going into last year. And our backup PG situation is much better with Nate able to bring up the ball (last year we kept having ’Quis, Paul or Ray bring it up instead of Eddie.).

If we can just shore up the C position, we actually should be in better shape than last year.

Getting Sheed back another year would be great....

Dream scenario would be sign Shaq for a minimum and have Sheed come back also.

Suddenly the C’s lack of big man depth disappears and they have a deep and versatile big man rotation instead considering the signing of Jermaine earlier this summer.

Yes!!

He will fit in perfectly in that system! Scrappy defender, rebounds, shoots decently…Hard worker too and physical.

issue with kwame

is that he’s been pretty bad his entire career. yes, he has plenty of talent (and i think MJ really messed him up mentally in washington, something he has yet to recover from), but this isn’t his 3rd season in the league or anything. he’s been around a while. could a change of scenery, a lot of quality intense vets, and a great coach make a difference for him? sure. but given his reasonably large body of work in the nba, i think that is unlikely. if he and shaq are both willing to sign for the vet min, we’d be insane to take brown over shaq. shaq is a shell of his former self…but that’s still not bad. if shaq ends up as our backup center (JO starts the year, slides to PF/C if/when perk returns), that’s a pretty great situation.

Kwame who?

I know C’s only have minimum left to offer but god no. Don’t even go there!! That’s one regret waiting to happen!! Move forward to someone else!!

Yeap! He's worse than M. Blount.

But if we don’t sign Shaq We have to have it. Sad.

it makes me physically ill

To see some of the support for Shaq on celticsblog.

On the court, Shaq offers nothing. If he’s not fed touches, he can’t score without the ball, he’s useless on the boards, and his strength is his lone remaining defensive asset. He has a serious chance of playing less that twenty games because of injuries sustained over his Hall-of-Fame career. He’s not the player you remember, and he has no place on this team and Danny has basically said as much when asked.

I’d rather have Kwame, and it isn’t really close. Here’s some other players I’d rather have than Shaq:

Anthony Tolliver
Nenad Krstic (you can have him for a set of golf clubs)
Tim Thomas
Louis Amundson
Spencer Hawes
Andris Biedrins

Seriously, are you saying you wouldn't have wanted Shaq for game 7 of the past NBA Finals?

You’re thinking his defense and rebounding wouldn’t have been useful to the Celts?

I don’t believe you’re saying that.

from cali

i like are bench. im very confident that this team can make it there again. experience is the key of winning the whole thing again. if shaq comes along and we don’t get fernandez, thats fine with me. kg might be getting a lil old but i know his legs are fresh and ready to go. ray is not gonna stop cuz man he has great stamina, great shooter and i will not trade him for the world. paul’s gonna be wanting it more and more. rondo is cocky and thats what the celtics needs. just needs to practice his FT’s and the rest is history. member guys heat dont have a point guard. they can have lebron wade and bosh. but im pretty sure the big 4 will be punking them around.

Shaq has made tons of $$$

over his career, he will have a good shot to win a title next year if comes to Boston.

I hope he realizes this and will not seek making more money over a chance to win a another title and will sign a minimum contract.

Maybe the big 4 of Rondo,KG,Pierce and Allen along with Doc can fly to Shaq and pay him a visit to persuade him to come to Boston.

Then if that works the gang can then fly to see Rasheed to try to talk him into coming back another year.

If that works the C’s would have a older but a mega big man rotation of PERK – KG – JERMAINE – SHAQ – SHEED & BABY which would give them one if not the deepest, talented front court in the NBA.

from a Cavs fan who watched every Cavs game this past season, Shaq still has game and would destroy Kwame Brown in the post. There was never a negative thing that came out in public or any problems in the locker room with Shaq. He knows his role now. If you look at his #s per 36 minutes, you will see basically the same #s in ppg, rpg, bpg, and fg% for the last four years. I hope he signs with the Celtics and you guys kick Miami’s ass.

I root for Cleveland and anyone playing the Miami Heat

Thanks for the comment. And good man for standing by your team. The fair weather fans will be deserting it.
