Ray Stays!

Multiple sources saying that the Celtics and Ray Allen have agreed to a two-year deal for $10 million per season with the 2nd year a player option.

So far this off-season Danny has signed both Ray and Paul to reasonable deals, and kept Doc.   Those were priorities 1,2 and 3 (you pick your own order).  Now lets get some front court help to fill the void while Perk rehabs.   Get to it Danny, you're on a roll so far.

Update: Jessica Camerato reports that despite being recruited by LeBron James to join Wade and Bosh in Miami to form a "Dream Team" Ray chose to stay with the Celtics.  Phenominal.

"I'm happy to be returning as a Celtic," he told WEEI.com via text message. "There's no other place I wanted to be."

"I believe I'm so far ahead of the game that I'm able to play longer," he told WEEI.com during the regular season. "People look at basic standards of guys my age at 34, like some guys at 34, there's no way they could play basketball right now. And I'm thinking at my age now, I can go even a few more years doing what I'm doing the way I'm doing it because for me, it's not rocket science."

LOL, everyone is snubbing the king. Awesome! I’m so glad to see Ray and Paul back at good prices, these guys showed that they value playing for this team. We got one more run in us for sure.

Would any of the so called stars ever take half the money to stay with a great team? NOPE

by Blackberry33 on Jul 7, 2010 10:12 PM EDT reply actions

Beg to differ on this one...

It’s about half of what he made this past year, but not half of what he could make next year. There wasn’t a team out there that would pay Ray Allen $20M for next year, so it’s not accurate to say he’s taking a pay cut of half.

That said, this is still a good signing because it’s for two years.

by Stanford_Fan on Jul 8, 2010 2:38 AM EDT up reply actions

10 million for ray a pay cut?

no way brother. ray got a good deal, very few teams in this climate would commit to 20 million for allen. this deal makes sense for both ray and the celts but for very few other teams. 20 million buys a LOT right now.

by lakersbluedevil on Jul 8, 2010 9:39 AM EDT up reply actions

"in this climate" ??

Have you been paying attention?

Lots of teams have cleared out so much cap space – and are NOT going to end up getting Lebron/Wade/Bosh/Amare. There is far too much money to burn. And teams will spend it.

Ray almost certainly could have pulled down a 2×13M contract if he was willing to relocate.

And similarly, Pierce almost certainly could have pulled down around 16-18M per if he had bothered to shop himself around.

Neither of these guys really even bothered to look elsewhere to get top dollar.

The key was for Danny to make sure Rays deal expired with Kg’s and was not a 3 year deal etc.

Danny did a nice job indeed.

10 million is a lot.

Ray and Pierce must be pretty confident they can win without much additional help being added to the roster to both take this kind of money…

by WillyBeamin on Jul 7, 2010 10:36 PM EDT up reply actions

$10M per is borderline irrelevant

It isn’t the amount that really ever mattered in signing Ray. His money this year and next comes completely over the salary cap via Bird rights so has no impact on our ability to sign other players. The amount is mainly only an ownership concern because of the luxury tax cost.

The main concern was always the length of the contract. 2 years is about as perfect for the team as could be. It exactly lines up with KG’s contract so both will expire in the same year. That is a major win for the Celtics.

Lets hope there isn’t a lockout in 2011-12!

by mmmmm on Jul 7, 2010 11:47 PM EDT up reply actions

This is exactly right.

The dollar amount of Ray’s contract is irrelevant, provided Wyc can afford it. The most important issue was the number of years. Ray at 2 years is perfect. It means we still only have 2 players under contract going into the 2012 offseason.

Glad someone around here is paying attention. We had ZERO room under the salary cap regardless of how much we paid Ray.

I am very happy to see Ray back in green!

by KG's Knee on Jul 8, 2010 12:38 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

It may be positive if its a partial lockout

Our guys have demonstrated that they are the leagues best over the first 30 games or so. So if its a short season (like 98-99) then it may help with the legs.

I’m so relieved right now. Glad to “welcome back” Ray! And to a really good contract, I’m surprised he accepted two years only with the 2nd a player option!

They had to give Paul and Ray enough $$ to stay over the cap, or they would’ve lost their MLE.

Combined with the redistribution of big name FAs (no three in the same place) things are looking good. The possibility of Lebron, Bosh, and/or Wade in Chicago had me a little worried.

by Birdbrain on Jul 7, 2010 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s great, but you have to use the midlevel exception for Redick, and hope Orlando doesn’t match.

So the equation isnt Ray or Redick, its RA plus a midlevel exception player or Redick.

Its Ray by a landslide.

by mcpickl on Jul 7, 2010 11:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly. How many times do we have to repeat this?

Signing or not signing Ray has no impact on our ability to sign other players.

Not signing Ray does not free up a penny that we can spend on anyone this year.

The only tools we have to acquire players this year are:

Re-signing our own FAs via bird rights and exemptions.
Signing one or two players totalling up to the Mid Level Exception (~$5.8M).
Signing players to vet minimums and draft scale contracts.
Trade Sheed’s contract ($6.2M) plus maybe a player (sign & trade) to another team for matching contracts’ worth of player(s)..

And on the other end of such wishes, JJ Reddick is a ristricted free agent – that means that Orlando can match any offer. And since we can’t offer more than the MLE, they can easily keep him out our hands for cheap.

indeed he did. Its reasonable to say he lost us game 7 if you look at the stats......but

he was guarding Kobe and he was tired and we didn’t havre a backup wing we trusted, therefore you have to get one. La gambled Ray would miss and packed the lane…it killed us

we couldn’t rebound worth a dang well Perk was out but yeah we need a guy like Sideshow Bob

by wahz on Jul 7, 2010 11:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Are you saying they left Allen open on purpose?

That’s ridiculous. He did miss the shots he got, but like I’ve been saying in other threads, so did everyone else. Can we please stop acting like he took shots away from guys that were on fire?

by rkls134 on Jul 8, 2010 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions

did you watch the game???? They laid off Ray which is why he kept shooting, he was open.

watch the tape. The Lakers dropped off Rajon and backed off Ray after the middle of the 2nd quarter to get in the paint. Ray was challenged when he would get in the paint, but otherwise they dropped off him on help defense. The Lakers missed heavily challenged shots all night, Ray did not.

Im not even criticizing Ray, he was all over Kobe and his legs were shot. We still need a shooter. For two years we needed another shooter like Posey, we need another wing shooter who is clutch off the bench to give Ray rest

by wahz on Jul 8, 2010 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

It played out that way, but that wasn't the plan coming in to the game

Not all of his shot were wide open like you make it sound, and he wasn’t the only one to miss wide open shots. How many layups did the C’s miss? How many open shots did Paul (5 for 15)miss? How many redounds off those misses did the C’s not grab, particularly when they had a hand on them and should have secured?

I just can’t take all this talk about Ray lost the game for us when ALL of them played like trash on offense in the 2nd half, especially OVERRATED Rondo, who was BENCHED for most of the 4th qtr of GAME 7.

by rkls134 on Jul 8, 2010 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Also

If Paul isn’t horrendous in Game 6 (13pts/5TO), we probably don’t see a game 7.
If not for the Shrek and Donkey show in game 4, the series might not have even gone 6. Who would you heap all the blame on then.

No one had a good series except for maybe Garnett, but if he grabbed a few more rebounds, blocked a shot or two, we probably win.

by rkls134 on Jul 8, 2010 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

concur

Team Game. Team play got them to Game 7 of the finals. Team Loss.

The ‘if only’ card can be applied up and down the lineup.

The missed layups and dunks (by multiple players) are probably the most painful missed opportunities – especially in Game 3. If they put just a few of those in the basket like they normally would have, the series might have been over in 5 and Perk would not be injured.

I guess this is as low as you can go and still keep Ray, so I’m reluctantly on board with this. I like the years, though; that helps somewhat. But we’ll still need someone off the bench to pick him up as his minutes decrease and/or the streakiness returns. We got a long ways to go. Next: Get O’Neal. (Either one.) I’d love Childress, btw.

Not to rain on Ray's parade, but...

This still leaves open the chance of a deadline trade, buyout, and then re-sign with Boston next season. Unless he has a no trade, I could see it, probably why the 2nd yr is an option.

I don’t see what his opt out next year does for him, unless things fall apart and he wants to go to NYK or something. He’ll make 20 in two years versus 20 in three years on the MLE. Makes sense both ways.

I love Ray and this is a no-brainer considering their situation, however…

I’m pretty tired of hearing that either Ray or Paul “took less” to stay with the Celtics. No one out there was lurking to pay $10 mil per for what Ray has to offer, it just so happens that it didn’t really matter what the Celtics paid.

Likewise with Paul. He signed a massive deal! It’s great for his popularity in the town, but there was nothing near that AAV out there for him.

yes non factor in 2008

Specially with his poor series ag the fakers where he didn’t close the game up ag vujabitch, and when he didn’t post record in 3pts in game 6 (that he broke in ‘10 finals) that gave us banner 17, or in ’09 series ag bulls where he couldn’t connect with his jumper and didn’t have few historical clutch shots while scoring 50+ in some games… oh wait… he did.

So happy to see this news

Our guys know how to play together. LeBron joining the Heat obviously makes them the team to beat, but the Celtics can still compete with them. Remember, there’s only one ball. The fact that LeBron, Wade, and Bosh would have to share touches hurts them in that respect. They can all score, but depending on the pace of the game, they can only score so much. With three guys on the Heat that all want the ball, the ego’s can and most likely will clash.

Let LeBron shoot

LeBron can shoot all he wants. If he is on the bench, let Bosh shoot, but don’t let Wade shoot ever.

Thanks for moving this to the top!

This is still a CELTICS blog anyway, right? We couldn’t have asked Ray to take a more reasonable deal. I think he has something to prove after that Finals performance. Now that a bit of a sigh relief can be taken, I’m excited to see what DA can swing with Sheed’s contract and how he can get another impact player (or two) with the MLE.

Top priority this year is a solid big man. We rebounded the ball horribly last year and now Perk will be out for at least the 1st half of the season. For the record, count me out of the Brad Miller fan group. Yes, Shaq is old, but so is Brad Miller. And the former was actually good at one point in his career. Heck even JO wins out on that theory. I can’t believe anyone who watched the Bulls in the playoffs this year thinks that Miller could be the missing piece to making a real run. He has NOTHING left in that tank. He’s slower, smaller, and less physical than Shaq, albeit with a better jump shot. My first option would be Haywood, though if we could somehow pry him from Cuban and he’d come on the cheap. I also like Rudy F. over Barbosa by a long shot. I, personally, can’t wait to roll the dice one more time with DA, Doc, and this crew.

another young back up shooting guard to solidify the shooting guard position …of course we still need to add at least 2 centers to the front line.

by fordescort on Jul 8, 2010 8:53 AM EDT up reply actions

young or old doesn't matter

The goal is to win now, with this core.

If a vet can do the job, a vet can do the job. We aren’t going to commit any long-term contract to them. That doesn’t mean DA shouldn’t sign a younger guy IF the right deal is found – but it has to be all about what that player can do for us now in this role (backup wing).

We are going to reload in two years – when we have real, actual leverage. Stop trying to buy your future now when you don’t have leverage. You will just be buying a cheap, low-quality future. You want to buy your future when you have money to spend on it so you can buy top-quality pieces.

Dream Team?

If it really was possible that Ray could join LeBron, Bosh, and Wade in Miami, then something is definitely wrong with the way the salary cap is supposed to maintain parity.

by Raef on Jul 8, 2010 7:39 AM EDT reply actions

Not the purpose of the cap

I Basketball (and hockey) the cap is supposed to protect owners from themselves, and spending beyond any possibility of income. Basketball is the worst on this because 1 or two players can make such a huge difference that talent gets bid up (I would hate to see the offers for LBJ if there were no cap).

by Silverlock on Jul 8, 2010 8:11 AM EDT up reply actions

First post here

I think the deal is reasonable, keeping the core intact will keep us in the hunt for a few more years, we just need to solidfy our bench, a bench talented enough to reduce the minutes of the big 3 during the regular season and to contribute when it matters during the playoffs..

Does anybody know the situation with Nate? Is it likely he’ll be resigned? …

Glad to have Ray back but....

$10 mil per for two is too much. I do think someone else would have offered him that but he did not want to leave Boston both for game and personal reasons. So he would have taken less in my opinion. I’d say he’s worth $5 mil per. After all one great game in seven during money time is not worth big money. But with the market rolling upwards $8 mil per would have done it.
If Ray’s game declines to 8-10 per game and we can trade the 2nd year as an expiring to someone then it makes sense. If Ray goes for 14-15 per game next year then year two isn’t so bad.
They probably went $10 mil per because of giving Pierce year 4. They didn’t want to extend Ray to three so they upped the per for two.
Oh well, Doc and the Big 3 are back. That’s a plan for competing and , at the end of the day regardless whether armchair GMs like me think a few too many dollars got spent , that’s what we want.
Now let’s hope that young energy like Bradley, Harangody, Gaffney, and a re-signed Nate and Tony and a good big or two from somewhere all come together soon.

by Wildblu1 on Jul 8, 2010 8:25 AM EDT reply actions

once again ...

How much we pay Ray makes absolutely NO DIFFERENCE. Even if we had paid Ray 2 x $15M IT WOULD STILL BE A GREAT CONTRACT FOR THE CELTICS.

No matter what we pay him has no impact on how we build out the rest of the team because his salary is completely above cap via his Bird rights..

The important thing is the length of the contract. By keeping it to a 2 year commitment (One plus his player option) the team preserves massive cap room past 2012.

The only ‘negative’ is to ownership, because of the luxury tax. And the Celtics have made plenty of money these last 3 years so I think they can afford it.

And when you really look at the market out there, considering all the cap room that is still left free on so many teams – Ray almost certainly could have made more money if he was willing to relocate.

so last nite I was against J. O'Neal and up on Shaq

but I slept on it and looking at his age and defense and his ability to hit the jumpshot/free throws, I am getting used to the idea.

My only concern is that with Perkins out till All Star Break and beyond, can his body hold up banging up against guys like Dwight Howard and other bigs in the nba with our style of defense.

by njceltsfan138 on Jul 8, 2010 8:29 AM EDT reply actions

Shaq's Body

Might not hold up during the ‘first season’ (who cares about it) but would be there for the playoffs when it matters. No one who has followed Shaq’s career can doubt his toughness. BTW, Shaq received UBER accolades from all media when he entered the NBA and for the next few years. He was barely a legal adult when he got all the adulation and yet…to my knowledge he was never in troubles.

Wait!

Doesn’t this merit a one minute infomercial on ESPN?? Bwahahahaha!!

Great deal for the C’s—oustanding off season already for DA to get Doc to return, and resign Ray and PP.

I am not a big JO fan and he looked terrible against us in the playoffs (Perk ate his post moves for lunch), but he’s a better signing and fit for us than Shaq. The latter can’t get up and down the floor and can’t hit FTs. We can’t afford that on this team. I think playing with a true vet team would rejuvenate JO.

Very pleased this a.m. Lebron? Who cares…..

Potential Roster.......

So, what does our roster look like assuming we sign Jermaine O’Neal?

Rondo/??/Bradley
Allen/TA
O’Neal/Kwame Brown/Erdin/ Perk (injured)
Pierce/????
KG/Davis

Who backs up Pierce and Rondo? Do we resign Nate for the latter spot? Do we have any MLE left to back up PP after we sign O’Neal?

by JPV on Jul 8, 2010 9:30 AM EDT reply actions

Not sure if Tony Allen has a contract yet

there hasn’t been any talk about him resigning and at what price, I’d figure the C’s want him for defense but depends on money.

they’ll get someone from Sheed’s contract, maybe Fernandez or Barbosa, can back up Ray or Paul

MLE will mostly go for big men, hope there’s enough money there for two bodies

by Banner 18 on Jul 8, 2010 9:46 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree.

I expect they will wait to see what they can work out as far as getting another backup wing before they worry about re-signing TA or not.

They have TAs Bird rights and can match anything anybody else offers for him if they need to. I’ve heard that LA is interested in him, but they are over the cap too so that limits how much they could spend on him.

In the end, I suspect they will bring him back, but that is one of those pieces that will be handled later after all the big pieces are in place.

The Big Four!

This deal may result in the strongest campaign by the Celts with this group. Stronger than 2008. Paul and Ray will remain consistently strong and reliable, KG will be a full year removed from surgery, and Rondo’s game is getting stronger and stronger each year. One or two little moves and this team is once again right with Orlando and the Lebrons!

by roz80 on Jul 8, 2010 10:51 AM EDT reply actions

Ray told me not to tell you guys this ...

but he signed here because Lebron is going to sign with Boston for the minimum …

by ForexPirate on Jul 8, 2010 11:10 AM EDT reply actions

This is going to end up getting retweeted by every NBA writer in the country right now. Nice work! Although my sources tell me that Lebron is doing a sign and trade with the Celtics for Sheed’s contract, Semih Erden and Tony Gaffney.

by PeaceSignMoose on Jul 8, 2010 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions

so....

Ray straight up dissed LeBron, right? Love it.

by sswallow on Jul 8, 2010 11:42 AM EDT reply actions

Not necessarily

This could turn out to be just a 1 year thing, and he could turn down his option if the C’s don’t win, or if the team looks bad and Danny wants to trade him. He would probably go to Miami/NY or where ever he thinks has the best chance of winning it all after that.

by rkls134 on Jul 8, 2010 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Ray looks constipated in that picture.

by johnnymost on Jul 8, 2010 11:43 AM EDT reply actions

Seems reasonable...

I’m sure Ray could get a 3 yr deal/or more $ on the open market. He’s a game changer who’s played at the highest level. As long as Ainge puts together a decent bench, Ray will be productive.

by LuckyNumber07 on Jul 8, 2010 12:23 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Great news about Ray

He still has plenty left in the tank. Hardly ever injured. Always in great shape. Can still play pretty good defense. Just hoping we find a serviceable back-up for next season to give him some more rest. He logged a lot of minutes last season.

Ray Allen's back-up

Whittman might very well be this guy.

http://www.cornellbigred.com/news/2010/6/26/MBB_0626103528.aspx

He reminds me of a Scott Wedman type player. I cannot comment on his “D”, but for short stints, Whittman could be the next Vinny “The Microwave” Johnson off the bench. Along with Nate Robinson [hope he is kept], Whittman and Robinson would allow for two superb outside shooters to come off the bench and pull the “D” out of the paint.

At 6’7", Whittman can shoot over most defenders. His release seems quick. He holds 3-pt-shooting records in the Ivy League. It will be most interesting to see how he does this summer.

Aye love Ray he won game 2 of the finals singlehandedly but,...

I wonder if Ray got told that LeBron was going there and figured he would get no shots. Still I got to think he wanted to come bak here first.

Last time we saw Ray Allen...

He gave us a 3 for 14 shooting performance in Game 7.

For a mere $20M…we now have him until he`s 37 years old.

Who wouldn`t be thrilled?!?

by Title 18 on Jul 9, 2010 8:35 AM EDT reply actions

Stop with this BS

Team lost the game, not 3-14 from allen or 5-15 from pierce etc.
Focusing on one player fault sounds more like miami or cleveland fans would do, and this is not neither Heat nor Cavs.
Allen is a HoFer and with 36 on his back is still in top 10 SGs in NBA, think about it and about 10 mill while people like Gay are getting max contracts truout the league with several teams with enough cap space to buy smaller banana state are still with empty hands.

Game 7

His D on Kobe in game 7 was very good, you have to admit that.
