Report: Jermaine O'Neal To Join Celtics
Jermaine O'Neal has agreed to sign with the Boston Celtics, a league source tells Y! Sports.
Previous reports have the two sides talking about a deal for less than the full MLE. If that's the case, consider me somebody who is very happy with this deal. J.O. has legitimate size, is a strong shot-blocker in the middle, and he can score and rebound. Even though he's aging, he's still "only" 31, younger than both Shaq and Brad Miller. Last season, he put up 14/7 in limited minutes, and statistically, his production compared favorably to KG, believe it or not.
J.O. isn't a perfect player, but he should be an adequate fill-in for Perk, and an excellent big off our bench when Perkins comes back.
UPDATE: The Herald has the first report of financial figures:
According to sources, O’Neal will sign a two-year contract with the club for the mid-level exception. He will be paid $5.765 million for the upcoming season.

Good stuff.
I have always thought he was a little similar to Perk (big tough with attitude), but with a better offensive game. I like the reasons why the Celtics are doing this. They want a banger.
I mean, with him and Perks knees combined, we have one seriously bad-man in the middle.
UNBELIEVABLE
How could the C’s give up the MLE for this corpse?
Did DA forget he shot 9-44 from the field and 3-7 from the ft line in the playoff loss?
What a mistake…

i totally agree!!!
JO himself wouldn’t believe such an offer!! imho the vet minimun wuold be enough!!
Bill Russell (even at 76) will be A LOT BETTER!!!

ehh,,,
I can leave with it IF we’ve still got some $$ to spend on Nate R. maybe JJ Redick…
Perk and JO?
That will make for some veeeeery interesting practices… Don’t they hate each other?
The Celtics hate everyone… you know… except other Celtics.
I’m pretty sure Sheed wasn’t bff’s with anyone on the Celtics before he was signed.
You can also do an unlimited amount of trades, obviously, but as far as actually signing players is concerned, you can only offer the vet minimum.
Trades and Roster
As we all know Sheed’s contract probably will be dealt, hopefully for a young shooter – Barbosa or Fernandez – maybe, probably pie in the sky wishing. I think the next tradable commodity is BBD as Harangody seems like another Danny 2nd round find but kind of duplicates BBD, although in a different way. Maybe packaging both Rasheed and BBD we can come up with a nice young player that fits and a 2 fer 1 opens up a roster spot.
Currerntly we have KG, Rondo, Perk, PP, Ray, Bradley, BBD, Erdin, JO, and I think TA will be resigned to make 10. IMO, we still need another Big, a shooter or 2 and ideally a backup for Rondo. Hopefully Rasheed’s trade or his return would fill one of these holes. I don’t think we can count on Bradley being Rondo’s backup this year, but would like to be surprised. So that might open the door for Nate. He seemed to play well in the playoffs and did eventually fit in, so that’s a possibility, but hopefully only 2 yrs. I know the Celts like both Gaffney and Lafayette, but I’m not sure either is a rotation player today, although Gaffney may be defensively. If Raheed doesn’t return, there are plenty of bigs out there, and if I were Danny I’d throw a Vet Min offer to several guys and first one to accept gets the deal. I think Rasual Butlet or Antoine Wright can also be had using the Vet Min, especially to chase a championship. Lastly, I’ve heard the Celts like Parkahouse (SP) but can’t see 5 or 6 rookies on this team. Ideally spots 14-15 would be used as development slots and spend most of the year in the D League, with Perk being 13 until he’s healthy.
My concerns from last year are length and shooting. Those were weakness during the regular season and in some playoff games as well. The lack of length (Perk’s injury) killed us in game 7 and we didn’t have the shooting to overcome it.
Jajajaja you stole my line
Don’t worry ecept for Wade, Lebron and Howard. We make everyone else look like terrible.
Still, I don't know how many teams were looking to spend the full MLE on JO
Seems like we overpaid, especially considering his knees are made of glass.
He still managed 68 & 70 games the last two season.
As a starter.
We do need him as a starter for a while, until Perk is all the way back. But after that, we shouldn’’t need him for more than 20 minutes per.
JO is not chopped liver
So he looked bad against the C’s in the playoffs. How do you think Ray Allen, with the exception of ONE game, looked against the Lakers? Kobe was not good at all in game 7. Lebron was terrible in several games against the C’s. There are a lot of factors involved in ‘game stats’ that I don’t understand but I’m sure Danny does and he made the decision as soon as he could. I remember watching JO when he played for Indiana and was a All Star and top notch player. He is vastly better then Perk offensively. From what I have read, his knees are bad and have limited his mobility over the past year but he still did ?? 14 and 6 ?? ish last year for the season with Miami. And hopefully Erden can at least defend well against our opponents second team center (s).
LOL. We made even Kobe look bad at times. JO is with the good guys now. We will make him a better player

that was awesome -
- i wish we could have both 2003 versions of PP and JO on the 2010-2011 team
Don't fake the funk on a nasty dunk
I wish we could have the half of our team as the 2003 version
PP,KG,Ray,JO,Wallace,Finley, lol Now thats a fucking all star team, and its funny because even with there age. Where still getting or getting to championships
Mark Souza Jr.
I hope blakely is wrong
We STILL need some bench help!
JO
Danny’s doing a great job of getting pertinent pcs together; JO will help although he’s a 4 not a legit 5.
KG, Baby, TA will all be better next year
JO will be better than Sheed. Rajon is likely to improve.
If we would add a dang solid shooting wing who can keep Ray from having dead legs, not to mention PP, no one beats us
Yeah, a 2/3 wing who can shoot and play defense is the remaining piece
We need a younger version of Finley.
Fernandez NEXT?
We really need 2 more “triple” shooters to run up tempo……..Rudy and Barb?
you got no evidence to suggest that he's not
just sayin. You may not like him, but you have no proof that Ainge doesn’t like him. In fact, reports did say Ainge was considering him.
We already spent the MLE, and I don’t see why the Trailblazers would want to take Sheed in a sign and trade deal.
Portland fans like Sheed...
…he did a lot for the community and still owns a home in the Portland area. He could retire as a Blazer, and come back and join them in April to help beat the Lakers.
we dont have the money
over the cap, already used our MLE (which rudy gay would never settle for, hes worth a LOT more), he wouldnt sign to a vet minimum contract, and theres no way we could trade for him unless he either decided to take the same amount as sheeds contract, plus whoever else we throw in there. which, if were talking about rudy gay, would need to be a lot more haha so wed have to make a rather large roster-shifting move to get rudy. plenty of evidence against it. it wont happen. our only hope at this point is trading sheeds and someone else’s contract (and receiving someone with an equal contract) , or signing someone to the vet minimum
Rudy Fernandez
…not Rudy Gay. Rudy is still under contract, we’d have to trade for him.

Ryan Gomes?
What’s his current status?? I keep hearing different things…
JO will be a fine back up
I’m not his biggest fan, but he fits the system both offensively and defensively. I’d like to know the terms but I’m confident he’s off the books when we transition to the Rondo era. I figure he gets the full mid-level given the way the market is, but if we got him for less, all the better. Anxious to see what’s next from Danny!

Weird addition.
I don’t like this guy and he butt heads with a number of Celtics in very recent history so this is going to be interesting. I guess he is better than that bitch Brad Miller.
we butt heads with just about everyone
we are a “nasty” team.
KG and perk had words years ago… that seemed to workout okay.
If anything I think that sort of history bodes well for them getting along, means Jermaine has that competitve fire in him that will fit with this group.

J.O.'s Playoff Performance
Everyone talks about his awful performance in the playoffs but he did have Perk, KG, and the leagues best defense guarding him. I like this pick up. He usually does a good job of making the easy shots. Something that Perk struggles with from time to time.
True.
He is one of the key to the Heat’s “sort-of resurgence” in the latter part of the season, that get them the 5th seed. He is one of their most consistent player throughout the ‘09-’10 season.

Obviously the defense was a factor but he just kept missing shot after shot well within his range. I thought maybe he was somewhat injured (which some would say is like saying rain is wet) but I can’t remember if that was actually the case. I’ll take him as a back up though (realizing he’ll probably start for a while).
It’s like he’s taking up the rest of Sheed’s contract. I do like the front office’s aggressiveness here.
"he just kept missing shot after shot well within his range"
Sadly, you just described our team’s shooting in Game 3 of the finals when we missed a zillion layups and dunks ….
Too much of a wimp
He is more of a finess pf type player we need another big body like Primož Brezec or a simular physical player for the vet minimum
by calc on Jul 8, 2010 1:33 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
finesse?
He has a soft shooting touch, but I’d hardly consider O’Neal a finesse player.
He averages a decent 2.4 blocks and 3.7 PFs per 36 minutes, his career Defensive Rebounding percentage is 22.1% and his career Defensive Efficiency Rating is an excellent 100. Those are not the numbers of someone who doesn’t play physical.
+1
O’Neal is definitely a solid, physical player—can still play in the post on O, hit the open 12 footer, and rebound and play solid D at the other end. Oh, and I bet that he’ll come into camp in much better shape than Sheed.

And he’s injury prone and immobile.
Yum.
nobody's perfect, but he has been a great

I admire the Patriots, but I LOVE the Sox.

very strong move
O’neil fits the bill for intermittent solution while Perk is out and in theory provides the talented “length” we saw lacking in the playoffs, this is a fantastic deal if he can produce more consistently then Rasheed, which shouldn’t be too hard as long as he gets in shape which i’m not counting on.
Oh wow
Woj’s twitter says he took the full MLE. : \
I guess we re-sign TA, then?
damn..
okay I’m not happy about that…
But I assume that means we still have Sheed’s contract as a chip, right???
yes, sheed's contract is still in play
unless he decides to come back but there’s no indication of that, who the C’s can get is the big question.
BIG Body Needed
I’d feel better If we could get One Bulky Center…Dampier, Haywood (dream) Shaq (desperation)….someone with bulk that can go at Dwight 15-18 minutes a game; not worried about the clowns from Inglewood…….
He would of been to sign to a short term contract....
but he probably wanted a long term deal as it appears which due to his age I and I think the C’s would not have gone for.
Boston was never in the running
Dallas was always going to sign him.

We have a back up for Rajon now, a Sheed replacement
Now we need a wing shooter. And to sign TA. We do that and we are two pieces better than last year with our rookie and a new wing. New solid wing with Sheeds contract, sign Ta, and if we could get another vet big man with the vet minimum I think we’d win it all
Ruined my day
My most hated player on the NBA is joining my Celtics..
Maybe the team around him will make him actually give some effort..
effort was never a problem for him
in his heyday the best defensive big in the game … injuries on the other hand …
that said, only 2 years, and as long as he doesn’t think he is a scorer – he will be good
I admire the Patriots, but I LOVE the Sox.
I could see him as the 4th or 5th scoring option
the club won’t design plays for him but like KG, they’ll be moments where he’ll be open for a short or mid-range jumper, should be easy for him to knock it down, he’s a better shooter than Perk but he can’t spread the floor like Sheed with the 3. But at this point in his long career, he should never be the 1st or 2nd option.
Having watched Sheed play last year, I think the only difference at this point in their careers is that JO is AWARE he can’t spread the floor with the 3.

the current offensive utilization order is
Pierce-KG-Rondo-Ray-Perk.
With O’Neal, it will still be:
Pierce-KG-Rondo-Ray-O’Neal.
unlike perkins though
oneal can hit a 18 footer, can dribble, create for himself if need be. it will be different in that sense but perkins has the better defense. i expect our team to really take it to teams early this year

Most hated?
Given the number of over-sized personalities in the NBA (Artest, Shaq, Kobe, Lebron, ad nauseum), Im wondering how jO moved to the head of the class on your list—? Not a criticism, just curious.
Like the move....
He is younger and more athletic then Shaq or Miller so thats a big positive.
He will add nice length to the front line that we desperately need.
We still need another center so I hope Danny still can sign another low cost one for the vet minimum…Shaq maybe?.
like it also, my only concern is his health
J.O. has had knee issues before so playing him long minutes in our defense will hurt but if the team sticks with the same game plan as last year – limit the minutes/ take care of the bodies, he should be ok (but you never know)
I also agree, would still like to see the club add another big body to soak up the minutes for most of the regular season. I won’t mind Shaq if he goes for the vet minimum,
Sheed’s contract is still available for a trade but it looks like the club is looking for a backup guard.
Please, the Knees
They need to spend weeks checking his lousy knees. I’ve never been a fan of his, and if he can’t even make it up the court come Feb. I’ll be even less of a fan.
"simul justus et peccator"
he is 31
but an old 31. Is he in game shape or rasheed shape?
We are still short a BIG MAN
Great….but
Sheed is gone, and Perk is out till who knows, so we still need another big man. We can’t just settle for J.O.
What would make this even more sweeter if is if Miller or Shaq also are signed. It will add more front court depth and we still also need a shooter from the outside.
We can use Sheed’s Contract to attract a trade
+1
The C’s still need another center.
Even if Perk was not injured …you can not have enough big man depth so hopefully Danny will add one more low cost big man.
Kwame Brown would be ok as a 3rd big (better then Shelden at least) .
It might be a stretch but it would be nice if Danny could convince Shaq to sign for the minimum.
yeah
i expect kwame brown to sign with us and for ainge to find a big wing with sheeds contract

won't mind kwame if he goes for the vet minimum
that’s the best we can offer him
Looks like the C's are giving Kwame a good look over
He is still young at 28, is long at 6’11" and bulky at 270 pounds and fairly athletic for a big man .
That would make him a pretty decent 3rd big.
thats about all he's worth really
unless another team really needs a backup center. even if only a 1 year deal it would be good for him. he’d be the backup to start, if he plays well, on a good team mind you, it may earn him more next year

But rebounded slightly less.
Fine with me. A good fill-in for Perk and a would-be good back-up, barring any injuries.

Good Signing
Since it is a two year contract, we have not mortgaged our future.
Lest anyone forgets, before trading for KG and RA, we were involved in a three-way trade for JO before the deal fell through.
Agree...
That’s why it was a nice signing by Danny.
Ray, KG and O’Neil’s contracts all come off the books together which is great.
They can have 1 more run with this core and blow it up after 2012…all those contracts do not tie the C’s up long term which is the key.
Kinda remember that..
Didn’t Chris Wallace offer 4 first round picks or something like that?

That wouldn't have been a bad deal.
Especially when you consider what we got with draft picks after Pierce. Pierce and O’Neal (if the right pieces were put around them) might have won a championship. Pierce was that good, imo. Look how far he got with Toine and nobody?
the full mle?!
danny’s 1st mistake this offseason , lets pray he does something good with sheeds contract
There is no way he was going to get any decent big man for less than the full MLE.
And what would you buy with what’s left?
Folks need to get past the idea of using portions of the MLE so as to get more than one player..
Lets say Danny used only a chunk of the MLE. Splitting it in half is less than 3M. So no way in hell can you sign any decent FA for that much. So, what? 4.5M? Great, maybe you get someone for that. They won’t be any good, of course. But someone will raise their hand to work for that much.
But after you spend $4.5M of the MLE, what’s left? $1.2M or so? What the heck are you bothering trying to save that for? You already have the Vet Minimum with which to sign players so that ~$1.2M doesn’t get you ANYTHING!!!!!
So there really is no point to NOT just using “the full MLE”.
Yes, the only implications are on the Luxury Tax. But if ownership is willing to spend, using the full MLE on JO has very little impact on the ability to bring in other players…
Praise for mmmmm
I almost always learn something from your posts and nearly always agree with them. I’ll toss my vote your way for ‘most informed poster’.
great
I have to see this pig wear a celtics jersey? Larry got rid of JO for a reason back when he was in indiana…..
hmmm
i might actually not mind if Rasheed came back to go one more year now, Perk KG JO and Sheed is a formidable mix in the paint especially if Rasheed could get his stuff together a bit earlier then last year
Ahh yes...
that would be great if Rasheed could give us 1 more run.
A Perk, Oniel and Rasheed center rotation would be a nice solid rotation.
Nice...
addition and nice contract. He is in a perfect situation and he will produce for the team coming off the bench and spot starting.
"The voice of the intellect is a soft one, but it does not rest until it has gained a hearing"
Good news.
Of course it would have been better to sign him with a portion of the MLE only, but realistically it was not going to happen… another steal for Danny, considering Haywood got 6 years, 55 million ! As much as Rondo with one more year only! Shocking.
Plus, I like the length of the deal. 2 years is perfect.
Jermaine O’Neal was the perfect fit and the best big man we could afford out there so great addition, he will fill in nicely defensively for Perk and he has a better offensive game. I hope he stays healthy though (it’s a concern).
And to think Danny signed Ray, Paul and J.O for 31 millions “only” on this crazy market… we’re lucky!
Now let’s trade Sheed for a scoring wing or guard!
I remember like it was yesterday when O'neal entered the league a teenager
I remember it like yesterday when Jermaine O’neal entered the league as a teenager drafted out of high school. It is hard to believe he is 31 years old! Time really flies… Man I’m getting old.
In the new Geico commercial, Marte sings "Let me be myself" on Wedge's front lawn (with the cavemen).
yah I remember him sittin on the bench for the trailblazers
having to get subbed in because of foul trouble to Dale Davis and Sabonis to guard Shaq in one of their playoff battles with the lakers back in the early 00’s
I’m with yah, making me feel old.
"Take it to the hoop, there's a dance involved." - DJ Tommy
Good move
Needed to get one of the MLE bigs out there. JO brings most of Perks D, more offense than Perk or Sheed, and most of Sheeds question marks ;)
Need another vet min big to replace Sheldon, (if Kwame we’ll be very deep in the front court.) Also considering Perk could price himself out of our ability to resign, JO is a legit option to take over for him in year 2.
Now trade Sheed’s retiring contract (my favorite since Theo Ratliff’s expiring contract) and parts for Marvin Williams and we’ll be set for another run.
Jermaine would be a good sub at the 4
but hes terrible at 5 now. can we still find a good perk substitute? and all hope right now is sheed’s imaginary contract, and we still need a wing player that has size and could play defense.

he was best at the 4 position. the heat didnt have enough length so he had to play c for them.
hes does not have enough strength and athleticism(as for now) to play defense on guys like howard/bynum/etc. hes mid range shooting ability would make him a valuable 4.

Ok I'll do some research
Let’s just say I suspect he’ll never play the 4. Too long and slow. He’ll probably play alongside KG at some point and you can say he’s a 4.
"Do you know that nonbelievers create the most positive energy?" Davis said
KG would be a good center
and depending on the on court assignment the difference in the 4/5 position might not be very clear. my point is oneal could not defend other C’s and he could probably play better with a long and mobile center. oneal had a sort of bad habit of relying too much on creating space/avoiding contact even in the pacers days.

I don’t see how not having enough athleticism anymore at the 5 makes him a better candidate for the 4. Anyway, in spite of the fact that split stats show he’s played some forward, that was only his official designation. On defense, where it matters for the Cs, he was still guarding the big bodies. He just played for a team with two starting 5s.
Also, it’s been said before, but just because he looked terrible up against Perk and KG for 5 games doesn’t mean he’s awful at the 5. He actually had something of a comeback year in the regular season and I think he’ll look a lot better in the playoffs next year being guarded by other teams backup centers than he did being guarded by the best defensive frontcourt in the league.
KG #5 played a 3 & 4 and sometimes a 5 depending on the lineup and O’Neil # 7 plays a 5 & a 4 depending on the lineup Nate #4 can play a 2 or a 1 but not a 3, 4 or a 5 but has been known to block shots of a 5.

I would still take Perk
I agree eith ap3604 about Perk vs. JO.This is a defense-first team. Plus Perk is our bully. JO can’t replace either, well, he has a better shot at playing D than being a true enforcer. Can’t say I like JO, but maybe I’ll come around too.
You'll get no argument from me
but, don’t be surprised if JO plays better with our other starters.

Better offensively and adequately defensively. We need more points out of the center position on the second team.

Great move!!!
You can’t have enough bigs, and we don’t presently have any that can play. Two years at the MLE for a consistent player like O’Neal is a great bargain! Think about it this way, would you rather have Haywood at $10 million or O’Neal at $5. I’m taking JO every time and twice on Sundays! He is a solid player and a bargain at that price… Good work Danny!
Now trade Sheed’s contract for a fast wing or back-up guard! (You ever notice that when some adds “contract” to your name in the NBA is means you are toast)
what is oneal's wingspan?
wanted to compare with perks…
I don't have the numbers, but he has very long arms.
Though JO is ‘only’ 6-11, he has reach comparable to any ‘true 7 footer’.
yeah i would guess around 7'4

Full MLE???... :S
We need trade the Sheed expiring for a long SF Shooter seriously…
Battier, Ariza, Prince, Childress, Butler???
Noooooooooooooooooooooo! Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?
Hide the little ones in the first few rows of the Garden.
Good move...
but is there any chance of Wallace staying and the two coming off the bench when Perk is healthy? Not sure how it works, but I still like the move. Get Childress!
For all you people saying full MLE is too much
Kevin Garnett ($18.8 million) – 29.9 minutes/game, 14.3 points, 7.4 rebounds
Jermaine O’Neal ($5.75 million) – 28 minutes, 13.6, 6.9
Seems like a very good deal to me. This was by far the best option we could have possibly explored with Perk out. And he could be a much better backup than Sheed when hopefully Perk is back healthy down the stretch. Very happy with this, and everything else Danny has done so far. Great offseason so far. Would love to see a Tony Allen deal to ice the cake.
But all the rest is what seperates them
KG brings leadership and an unmatched level of defensive intensity. Just saying.
Agree about the MLE - and it isn't even about KG
Folks need to think and do the math. If you break up the MLE, you end up with buying a mediocre player and having a chunk left over that isn’t even bigger than what you can spend already with the vet minimum.
Danny is doing all the right moves so far.
Now, we still need to look at upgrading at backup wing if possible using Sheed’s contract.
Baby at center
Baby has and can play center against the Shaq’s and Howards. And if Perk is back, eating center minutes, that leaves JO free to relieve KG at 4. Also, I still think Erden and one other ‘bulky’ type center will make the roster. Perhaps Artis P (Sp). 6 fouls are 6 fouls and it is a tossup between Shaq and Howard as to who is the better free throw maker.
Unfortunately, I don’t have much hope for Perk this coming season. Prolly won’t see the court until at least February. Will be rusty for a month. And worse, he can be expected to have the normal problem anyone has coming off this serious an injury – nursing it for a year before really getting back to normal.
If we get Oneal for cheap, I’d be overly happy. Someone needs to get in this kids’ head and help him realize he’s got some good stuff left to offer.
We never know, maybe a change of scenery can turn on the switch for him.
Coming back to a winning environment may do wonders for him. (The Heat and the Raptors aren’t exactly “winning environments” when JO was there).

AGREE with a couple of others in here
Jermaine seems to have an empty tank
Jermaine seems to frequently hurt meaning he doesn’t plat at all or he play at less than 100%
Jermaine ain’t worth the full MLE but so may other were not either…..of course we paid Scal about half that for thlas 5 years and I am not so surre what we got really …(you can overpay at any price is what that means)
Jermaine is probably better than Brad Miller or Shaq… or certainly Kwame….but at that price he better come in shape
BY the way ….these guys are still available and none are named Jermaine but they do seem to fit our team in terms of age

Is it Soup Yet?

haha
welcome to the least explosive front line in the nba. kg and jo will have to develope a technique to rebound without jumping
the few, the proud, the boston celtics
climb on each others shoulders?
and when they go to the basket one can get on their hands and knees so the other cant jump off their back to dunk

Agree with Koz
A broad arse and desire can make up for a lot of lack of length and hops. Think Charles Barkley and Wes Unseld. Or even BBD (who can get the rebound but can’t do anything with it).
A Wallace clone
regarding effort five years before Wallace showed his colors.
Celtics will get the best out of him
Jermaine has a lot of talent
I think the Celtics can help him with motivation
ESPN reporting James to Miami
“all indications”.
perhaps this knowledge incfluenced Danny’s decision
to sign O’Neal from the Heat.
the full mle!! for two years!!
Gross. I thought we were trying to get younger, more athletic. And it seems to be that signing a brittle JO, plus Perk’s injury, means we have to sign another legit big (not a Sheldon type). Was thinking it would only take half the MLE for one year for him, and we could use the other half to get a guy like Haslem or Drew Gooden.
Here’ what they should do from here, IMO:
-resign TA
-sign and trade Sheed for Mike Miller (2-3 years, 7 mil per) – nice contrast with TA on the second unit
-resign Scal for peanuts – he’s proven he can be an effective 10-12 min guy
-sign a servicable big man for vet’s min
re-sign TA: i agree!
trade sheed for mike miller: miller is a FA cant do it. a team isnt going to sign him just to trade him either. i expect ainge to get a big SF if he can. villanueva is my pick. at 6-11 he adds even more size and he can shoot, hit FT’s
re-sign scal: i expect doc to talk to ainge and try to get scal for the minimum, however, scal has been getting interest from other teams.
big men for vet min: dont know who danny will get but there will be a few guys willing to take the minimum for a chance at a ring. kwame brown?

If MM wants to play for the C’s, they can offer him more than the MLE through a sign and trade, which most teams can’t do. They’d have to give the Wiz something back (likely a draft pick, hopefully just a second rounder or two), but it’s better than just letting him go for nothing.
miss understood you. you're right.

from Rotoworld:
The Heat have reportedly offered Mike Miller a five-year deal worth between $27 and $30 million, with a deadline of Thursday night to accept the deal.
It’s interesting that the Heat are making offers with LeBron still seemingly up in the air, but getting Miller would immediately add a strong fourth piece if the Heat end up with LeBron, Wade and Bosh. It’s also worth noting that we reported on July 1 that LeBron wants to play with Miller, and that Jeff Goodman is saying that the Heat have told Miller they’re “confident” LeBron is coming."
Do the Heat really have that much space? And if they use the rest of their space, the rest of their roster is going to be absolute garbage. I wouldn’t mind the C’s overpaying Miller for fewer years to snag him from MIA.
i think this is insurance
incase lebron doesnt pick them.
wade, lebron, bosh take up all of the heats cap space. the only way this would work is if all 3 players took WAY less than max dollars and i just cant see 3 guys in their prime doing so

no matter what, if Lebron leaves the Cavs, he will be leaving a TON of money on the table
Because he is a restricted FA, Cleveland can offer him 6 years instead of just 5 AND they can give him 10.5% raises each year instead of 8. That adds up to a huge amount of money.
If it comes down to money, the only place that makes sense for Lebron to leave CLE for would probably be New York, where he can probably make the money back up in endorsement contracts and such.
Yes What's gonna be his saved in taxes.
If hi’s a MAX guy in 6 years deal. How much money can He save in those 6 year??
Okay
I’ll admit JO has annoyed me but I thought his position on high school kids coming to the NBA was not the popular opinion but he was fairly articulate. I think this is a classic reclamation project. He’s kind of underperformed for a while but he still has some left in the tank and he’ll be motivated to get back at Miami. God knows we’re going to need every ounce of that attitude.

Wasn't Perk supposed to have surgery yesterday?!?
No news on this? Weird.
i think this could make rasheed return
him and jermaine were teammates in portland and he might want to stay around since we are looking like we will contend next season.
If he doesn’t, we really need to trade his contract and get a role player
Uhhh
He’s retiring. He just doesn’t want to officially retire until he’s traded.
by Tai on Jul 8, 2010 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions
ik he is probably going to retire
but look at guys like favre, players change their minds and he has time to do so
Rebound Average
He only averaged 7 boards a game last year. We need more than that. We would have won the championship if we could have rebounded. We need a young center, but if he is committed to being good again, then it will be good. He was awesome at Indiana with Artest until the mess with the fans. He possibly could be that way again with G. I have yet to see perkins perform well when he was healthy.
Full MLE
Im on the fence with this move.. I like him because he can rebound the ball. For him to be a good player he has to get his tough attitude back to what it was in Indiana. He KNOWS he can play better than this , its just hes backing off for some reason. Im prettttty SURE that we DID NOT use the full MLE.
Now expecting that we didnt , how much money would we have?
love the move .
even though i wanted shaq o,neil is perfect for this team danny is putting together a pretty good team if eherdh the turkish dude works out and the other picks we are looking at a good bench. i still have a soft spot for powe hope danny can bring him back .
lohaus #54
Bench
I think Hargodly will make the bench and hopefully Artis P. Or a Jim Luscutoff type, ie a 6 foul, 6 minute enforcer.
people need to respect what harangody did in college
the guy put up numbers equal to tim duncan over a 4 year period…..he will make the roster and probably see some decent minutes at the 3 & 4 ….getting his offense going whenever he wants in summer leagues and thats without any of the rostered talent…..he and bradley will be GREAT bench players……game changing bench players……i predict they both at least get consideration for all rookie team(would be cool to see them both at all star weekend)……..JO is a great signing will play really well in the post with garnett….the knees are an issue but whatever, anybody can injure anything next season (lets hope a curse besets miami and they can never keep the their big three healthy) …….now to get rudy fernandez and sign and trade nate robinson for another big
I like Perkins but ...
Does anybody remember the finals last year? Even before Perkins got injured, he severely handicapped the Celtics’ offense with his lack of shooting and poor hands in tight spots underneath the basket. There will be situations, including late in playoff games, when we will need a big who draws defensive attention. As a temporary starter, key bench player, and situational closer, JO really adds a lot to the Celtics.
Also, his defense, especially in such a great help-defense system, will be more than adequate at the 5. Let’s just cross our fingers for his knees. My call is that this is a smart move.
