Rondo Is Ranked 3rd Best Point Guard

Rondo finally found some folks shorter than him.

Kelly Dwyer of Ball Don't Lie has a grand time ranking each position's top 30 players.  He started off with the point guards and pegged Rondo at # 3 behind Chris Paul and Deron Williams.

Ranking the point guards, 10 through No. 1 - Ball Don't Lie - NBA  - Yahoo! Sports

3. Rajon Rondo, Boston Celtics (last year: eighth) A big jump for Rajon, who could be incredibly overrated or playing the role of the point guard at a level that my tiny brain just can't understand. I'll split the difference, and hand him the top-five spot.

Yeah, that sounds about right.  Rounding out the top 5 are Steve Nash and Derrick Rose.  Nash would appear to be on the downside of his career but he can still play.  Rose is on the way up and along with Russell Westbrook (#7) will likely be good benchmarks to compare Rondo with at similar stages in their careers.  Or rather, Rondo is the standard bearer until one of the others can make it to the Finals.

It will be interesting to see where Dwyer ranks Pierce, Garnett, Allen, and the O'Neal's.

Nice

If he can develop a jumpshot, he can easily surpass D-Will and CP3. : )

Rankings are one step above Predictions

I dislike them both….but it’s only August……… so what else is there? I mean seriously….I have contemplated the shape of my navel to the point I can no longer move my neck….

Ok. We all know that Rondo is the 3 best PG.

Watch out CP and DW, Rondo is coming for #1 this year.

by celt4ever on Aug 18, 2010 11:48 PM EDT reply actions

Try #1 PG

Rondo is the best point guard in the league. period. I know it would appear to be biased as a Celtics fan, but there was not a better PLAYER in the first three rounds of the playoffs. So forget about being third point guard.

I don't care much for rankings. Players aren't mix and match.

For the Celtics, as presently constituted, I don’t know there’s anyone better for them than Rondo. But put him elsewhere, and he might have to fill a very different role; a role he might not fill all that well.

by no kidding on Aug 19, 2010 12:23 AM EDT reply actions

Put him elsewhere??

He is pegged to start with team USA for a start, How’s that as not fitting elsewhere?.

"No I’m not KG. Not at all, but I’m Big Baby Glen Davis from LSU, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I’m not the Big Ticket. I’m the Ticket Stub. Don’t count the Ticket Stub out. You might need the ticket to get in the game, but you leave with the ticket stub, because you’ll never forget this game."

by bopna on Aug 19, 2010 12:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Team USA is similar though

A bunch of good players coming together and playing for one team. Joining someone like the hornets (take away Chris Paul) I don’t think he’d fit as well as he does with the celtics. So No Kidding has a point.

Way too speculative for me.

by guava_wrench on Aug 19, 2010 4:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe he'd be even better?

I could see him averaging 20pts, 10ast, 2 stls on a crappy team like NO. He’d shoot a lower percentage but if he pounded the ball like C Paul then I could see it happening. Put C Paul on the Celtics and his stats would take a dramatic hit or the team would be worst.

by IowaGuy on Aug 19, 2010 8:09 AM EDT up reply actions

To average 20.

He needs a jumpshot. His game will have those random explosion nights when he’s getting into the lane at will, and he’s actually hitting the FTs (see the triple double vs. Cleveland) but to average those kind of numbers, he needs to shoot from the stripe at >70% consistently. He’ll get to the lane, his points all depend on whether or not those FTs are going in, and coincidentally so do many of the Celtics wins.

by Sizzlack on Aug 19, 2010 9:17 AM EDT up reply actions

He needs either a jump shot or a free throw shot. He doesn’t necessarily need both.

(Note carefully everybody – they are NOT the same skill.)

I would prefer he develop a FT shot first of the two. That would be more valuable to this team.

Free throws get you out of scoring droughts...

And win games in crunch time. Especially if you’re the player, like Rondo, who has the ball much of the time.

So I’d agree…

In my opinion

Forget rondos jumpshot(ish). The season that rondo shoots 80% or higher, will be the season that he will be MVP caliber. From now on he’s the leader of the celtics. No question. Rondo has to start taking over on offense in the Regular Season. Everybody else, hate to say it, is just an average or slightly above average player in he league.
A few reasons are 1. Shooting a good percentage will encourage him to draw fouls, instead of avoiding them. 2.we need him to be reliable down the stretch and be able to shoot from the line. 3. It would give doc and management one less thing to worry about.

Go Rondo

It`s nice to see this guys hard work pay off.

by Rebound Machine on Aug 19, 2010 12:57 AM EDT reply actions

Team USA would disagree....

If you need somebody to pound the ball through the court Rose is your man. You wanna win games? I’d take Rondo over anybody else in America.

by IowaGuy on Aug 19, 2010 8:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Depends how your qualifying really.

Kelly seemed to be ranking them in an “all around, effects and controls the game” kind of way. And if we’re talking about their overall effect on a game, Rondo is clearly better than Rose, it’s not even close.

Now if we’re talking about the ability to take on the scoring load, then Rose is definitely better. But Rondo has a way of controlling a game without ever putting a point on the board.

by Sizzlack on Aug 19, 2010 9:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Point Guard

Rose is more like a scoring combo guard than a point guard. You just need to watch Team USA with Rondo at the wheel vs Rose playing point. The difference in point guard skill is VERY obvious. Rondo’s point guard skills are off the charts.

by sswallow on Aug 19, 2010 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Add Nash's shooting to Rondo

He will top the list for years to come and the Celtics will be that much more lethral.

by getthat18now on Aug 19, 2010 5:02 AM EDT reply actions

I don't see how Nash is rated below Rondo.

Steve still hits the big shots whenever they’re needed. He might not shoot for an entire quarter, then being down by whatever, he’ll just step back and bury a three. He’s still incredible, older than Deron and Paul, but haven’t the Celtics just been going on “experience is the key.”

by eastie Rich on Aug 19, 2010 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I have a tough time with ranking Nash below anyone on that list

but, if I take my fan-boy eyeglasses off, I have maybe acknowledge that he isn’t quite as athletic as the younger guys and maybe gives the edge on defense. …. barely ..

Nash is still an amazing player.

This, to me, probably clarifies that these rankings are all crap and not worth more than the electrons used to display them on your screen. In fact they are probably worth less.

by mmmmm on Aug 19, 2010 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions

meant to say "these _sorts_of_ rankings"

‘Did not mean to pick on Dwyer’s anymore than I pick on most such rankings.

by mmmmm on Aug 19, 2010 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Afterall Nash is only a 2 time MVP

He plays crappy defense but he makes everyone else around look better than they really are. A trait of the great ones! Hall of Famer!!

by leonitus on Aug 31, 2010 2:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Rondo will stay in the top 3 list of PGs for the next 5-6 years

maybe more if he develops a solid mid range jumper and ups his free throw percentage

still, in any future C’s team post 2012, Rondo won’t be the go-to guy offensively, Ainge needs to find some scorers to compliment him when our big three hangs em up.

by Banner 18 on Aug 19, 2010 6:34 AM EDT reply actions

Behind CP3????

What the heck???? Don’t you have to play to be considered good? Any maybe even win something? Like I would definitely have Nash and Fisher up there before CP3. Say what you want about Fisher, but he has a handful of rings now and CP3 has…. none?

by D-Funnk on Aug 19, 2010 9:04 AM EDT reply actions

smh

its not about rings..its about the player in particular.

Fisher stunk it up in Golden state and utah. Fisher does well in teh triangle offense…which doesnt need a dominant pg by any means

"they try to do what he do, and been where he's been, but they get folded in two.....he's the dude"

by semsemma on Aug 19, 2010 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions

I have been thinking about similarities between Nash and Rondo

and there is an obvious one. Both make their teammates better. It is difficult for me to say the same thing about Rose, even about CP3. I am curious what is going to happen with Amare (and his numbers) without Steve by his side.
