The Big Shamrock: Shaq Coming To Boston?
A. Sherrod Blakely of CSN tweets:
Celtics appear to be close to signing Shaquille O'Neal. Will have the story up shortly.
More details as they emerge. If this happens, count me as somebody who is extremely excited to see Shaq in green.
UPDATE: David Aldridge confirms Blakely's story:
Props to @SherrodbCSN in Boston for being first: Cs are indeed "close," according to league source, to signing Shaq. Story soon on NBA.com.
UPDATE #2: Chris Broussard tweets:
Shaq to Celtics likely done either tonight or tomorrow, source says. Shaq to ATL not totally dead, but Diesel most likely joining Celtics.
UPDATE #3: From David Aldridge's story:
The Celtics, the source said, have told O'Neal that he has to come off the bench next season, and that O'Neal said he could accept a reserve role for the first time in his career.

But a needed mixed bag. Pluses definitely outweigh the minuses, although with Shaq maybe I shouldn’t use the word “outweigh.”
think that is how I feel Big E -not sure
certainly he was not one of my first five picks …but pickins are slim….or fat I should say..
He can’t wear 32 or 33….like to see him wear 99 and he should have to spit on a Laker jersey during his press conference or he can’t join

Correct
Game 4, Shaq/Varejao 25 pts on 10-15 FG shooting, Perk/Sheed 3 pts. All Cavs starters in double figures, only Ray, KG, and Rondo for the celtics.
74-72 Celtics lead to start the 4thQ.
LeQuit scores 5 points on 2-6 shooting, for 22 total. (He scored 21 in the 1st game 3)

what pluses?
the cavs were noticeably a better team without Shaq last year. Boston needed to find a way to get younger this offseason, find guys who can get up and down the floor with Rondo. instead, danny has signed two guys who looked terribly old last year in Shaq and Jermaine O’Neal. this is a bad move.
only way this makes any sense (and this is possible) is if the diagnosis on Perk is much worse than they are letting on, and they dont expect him to really be able to contribute this season. otherwise, what happens when Perk gets back? Last year, Doc set Perk back by reducing his minutes to accommodate Sheed. Doc loves his veterans, do we think he will be able to sit Shaq and give Perk the minutes he deserves?
Maybe this was the best possible option for the Celtics. But if that is the case, that is not a good thing.
Several pluses
Post offense.
Rebounding.
Depth. (Our backup center is BBD as of this moment).
All the negativity in this town sucks. It sucks, and it stinks, and it sucks. - Rick Pitino
Totally agree, Roy. There are several things I worry about – he’s slower than anyone on Earth and he’s an atrocious foul shooter – so his minutes will need to be carefully managed.
But Doc’s good at that, so it should work out fine.
perk, rondo, shaq and bradley are all terrible FT shooters

"the cavs were noticeably a better team without Shaq"
In the regular season? Maybe.
Shaq was CLE’s 2nd leading scorer per 36 minutes in the regular season and easily their best rebounder (DRB% of 24%, ORB% of 9.4% – both excellent numbers). Interestingly, his defensive efficiency rating (points per 100 possessions) was very good – 102, while his offensive efficiency rating was somewhat low at 104.
Neither Z nor Hickson really were notably better than Shaq.
In the playoffs? Not really.
They only played him 22.1 minutes per game – but he still averaged 11.5 points and 5.5 total rebounds. He was obviously one of their more motivated players, especially in the latter games.
There are some legitimate questions that will need to be resolved. I always thought that Cleveland didn’t utilize Shaq correctly. But their is a risk that we too wont’ be able to. Defensively, Shaq still commands control of space very well – he had excellent rebounding and decent shot blocking numbers. And he can definitely be used to start the break. Offensively though, is where the real problem starts. The Celtic’s basic philosophy is that once our shot is up, most of the team is supposed to immediately sprint back on defense and take away the other team’s transition game. I just can’t see Shaq doing that consistently. On the other hand, we should have a lot of speed on our perimeter in the second team with Nate, Quis & Wafer – so they should be able to get in front of any break, giving the big guys time to get down.
Doc, Cliff & Larry are smart guys – I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that they are a bit smarter than Mike Brown. My bet is that they will be better able to figure out how to use Shaq’s particular talents.
we played teh cav's better last season when shaq was in the game
just because it slowed down cleveland and took away Z’s shot and varejaos hustle. maybe thats why people feel they played better without shaq

Yeah - people remember what they saw for themselves.
and its impossible for any of us to see ALL the games of ALL the teams.
GREAT MOVE
Especially if this is for the Vet Min. I really wouldn’t mind if it were for Sheed contract which I really can’t see happening. Cleve doesn’t want Sheed’s contract they want draft picks. The only player I could see us giving up would be BBD and I"ve stated that before, because he is somewhat redundant with Harangody – different but similar, both undersized PFs who bring energy. Also BBD also wants a big payday after this season and I don’t see Danny giving it to him if he wants cap space in 2012. I kind of expect BBD to be traded this season.
As mmmmm mentioned I firmly believe that Cleve’s issues were Mike Brown. He may be a good defensive coach, but his offensive philosophy was Bron to the left wing, Bron to the right wing and Bron down the middle. There was very little ball movement that didn’t begin with the ball in Bron’s hands.
One thing Shaq brings is a presence in the paint. There are too many people who are going to push him out of the paint. He’s a real load, and he will give the hard foul. I certainly like our chances inside with Shaq, JO, KG and Perk. Having Shaq also takes wear and tear off both JO and KG which is very important during the regular season.
I’m not expecting more than 20-26 mins from Shaq and at that level, they should be good minutes. I’m not worried about him slowing Rondo down, just the opposite, I think, it will turn him loose. Shaq can rebound and outlet the ball, then Rondo is gone. Rondo may not get many triple doubles with Shaq in the paint grabbing rebounds, but that’s a good thing too.
Shaq can still clock shots, which should make our defense better. If a wing player gets beat now we have 4 decent shot blockers at the basket.
And offensively, he still commands double teams, that should open up things for PP, Ray, Nate, BBD, Harangody, Wafer, Bradley etc. And the guy is a good passer out of the post, unlike Perk. If the offside wing gambles off Ray, Ray will be shooting uncontested 3s. And do you think that Shaq might get a few alley oops from Rondo on drives to the bucket and/or put backs on Rondo missed layup attempts.
I like the move, and if it’s for the Vet Min it’s fantastic. Then if he comes in with an attitude, we can just show him the door.
OK but
look at Shaq’s plus-minus numbers. They were – easily – the worst of any of the Cavs’ rotation players in the playoffs, and they weren’t good in the regular season either.
His perimeter defense is horrible at this point in his career, and any team with the personnel and decent coaching will attack him. Remember what Orlando did to us in those games that it won, with the P and R? It did that against Perk, who’s a plus p and r defender. Let’s see what happens when Shaq’s in the mix. Ugly.
On offense, Cleveland often used Shaq in their own version of the “clogged toilet” offense. Pass the ball in to him, pound the rock a few times, then force up a shot whether or not he had position. I’m hoping he can be persuaded to stop that with the Cs, but as we all know, the Cs’ offense has plenty of stand-around moments.
I hope to be wrong, but at this point, I’d much rather have an active body who rebounds and hustles, and stays out of the way of the offense.
yeah, I agree about his plus-minus numbers.
To me that tells me he was a terrible fit with the Cleveland system. His individual stats suggest that he still has individual skills – but he just seemed mis-utilized and a bad fit for Cleveland.
That’s why while I think that he still has plenty of useful ability, there are reasons to be cautious – Doc and the coaches have to do a better job of figuring out how to utilize Shaq without compromising the rest of the way the team operates.
This would not work at all, I think, as a mid-season acquisition. But with a summer and training camp to plan and work on things, I think Doc & his crew should be able to make this work just fine. Another difference is that the expectations needed from Shaq will be less here.
Hey if they pulled this off for the minimum, it’s a great deal. We’re a different team than the Cavs…we’re okay with a big slow body in the middle.
+1
Amen to that, I hate the argument that Shaq will slow down the Celtics. You only need 3-4 people to run a break, someones gotta get the rebound and make the outlet. He’s not going to change anytihng for Rondo.
But he does give you a legit post threat you didn’t have with Perk. Someone you can give the ball to for a few possessions to save the legs of your perimeter guys, who can make a post move and not travel 1/3rd of the time.
shaq is also a very good ball handler for his size
at least i wont cringe seeing him with the ball on offense like i did with perkins.
what would be awesome is if shaq teaches perkins some post moves

Wow!
Everyone is underestimating what Shaq can and will bring to the C’s. He wants another ring bad! And he wants to take that ring from Kobe…BAD! i can see this as similar to Walton coming in 85. Walton was old and done with but was the perfect fit. I am very excited about Shaq in green. I’m convinced he will help alot.
nah he can't take a ring from lebron
lebron has to earn the ring first or lebron’s puppet can borrow one from kobe then shaq can take it
i just hope its for the minumun
if it is, then we got two of the better free agent big men and we would still have sheeds contract.
when perk would get back we would have 5 very talented and different bigs
Alright here’s my take, Cavs and Celtics are two very different situations, Cavs had Ilgauskas (butchered his name I know) and a young guy who wasn’t ready to start as their options at center, they had no other options. In the early going for this coming season will Shaq be one of our main options at center? Yea, it’s him and Jermaine O’Neal if this gets pulled off. Assuming Perk comes back healthy he will start, and then a bench with Jermaine O’Neal and Shaq? That’s an incredibly deep and talented bench, if not also a very old one. I’m excited if this happens, and will be looking forward to Kazaam’s first appearance in green.
just looking at these names.
Shaq/Perkins
KG/J.O.
Big Baby/Erden (yeah let’s put the rookie in)
The other teams might wanna practice mid range and 3 balls now. A lot of it. As lay-ups I think would be scarce when they play Boston.
WISHFUL THINKING..
6’7 Pierce, 6’6 Daniels, 6’8 Harangody (hopefully)
6’11 Garnett, 6’11 J. O’Neil, 6’7 BBD
6’10 Perkins, 7’0 Shaq, 7’0 Erden
6’5 Allen, 6’5 Wafer, 6’6 R. Fernandez (hopefully)
6’1 Rondo, 5’9 Robinson, 6’3 Bradley
Hope BBD & Harangody can play the 3 & 4 to give us more flexibility; since we are beyond the 15-man roster, I guess T. Gaffney is out ( I pity him since I project him to be a defensive stopper to likes of LeQuit & Kobe; he’s unselfish, plays with a lot of energy, a team player..)..
With this line-up, I’m very optimistic we can give the 18th banner a RUN.. Good move DA!!!
Move J. O'Neal back to the starting center spot, and put Perkins in parentheses.
The prudent thing is to assume the Celts won’t anything out of Perkins next season. We don’t want him aggravating or compounding anything by rushing himself back. But if it turns out that he can play, then great, it’s all gravy.
Move JO to the end of the bench
and let him rot
Harsh words. Fill me in. What’s the worst that Jermaine O’Neal has ever done? Or are you simply thinking of that one brawl?
I’m in agreement, but only because JO sucks. I don’t hold the brawl against him, just that he seems particularly soft and whiney. I feel like people keep waiting for him to regain his very brief superpimp form, but he just seems worn out the last few years.
HOWEVER….if the Celtics do end up with Shaq, I’ll be supporting the “other” O’Neal as well

I'll take it....few economical impactful options
Not so sure that this team can keep up with rondo irregardless of shaq being on the team. I like the move if its a done deal. I like the fact this offseason is moving along relatively quickly so we can get these guys in shape and cohesive…..must say, next season oughta be interesting if we’re healthy——-and in shape.
malcontents....the lot of you
Good pickup
Will be one of the best backup centers, especially places with shooters like Nate, wafer, and maybe even Rudy. Yes our bigs are slow, but him and glen should help our rebounding off the bench. Can’t be worse than sheeds rebounding because he played on th perimeter so much. All in all, it will conclude a very solid and talented frontcourt if perk can come back at 80%..if if if. But he’s the best option, now only if we can add a Rudy or battier by the deadline if we hold on to sheeds deal.

Wasnt gonna happen.
That rumor had no ground, it made no sense. Just nonsensical ramblings from fans with googly eyes who don’t understand the CBA or how trades work.
Cleveland has no desire for Sheed’s deal, they don’t need to shed salary, and they’d only be willing to give up either guy if you made it REALLY worth their while. We’re talking multiple draft picks + cash, that just wasn’t going to happen.
Probably wouldn't take that much
The alternative for them is get nothing for Shaq leaving. I bet it wouldn’t take more than one first.
But...
It’s not just Shaq their letting go, their letting go two very useful players in Moon and Parker. Both of which are on pretty team friendly deals. No way they give that for a 1st rounder.
i was the one who originally suggested the trade
it was a 3 way trade with portland. parker goes to portland, rudy, shaq, moon come to boston, rasheed and portlands 1st rounder and a 2nd rounder or future 1st rounder from boston to cleveland.
it wouldve opened up 2 roster spots for cleveland and saved them another $12m this year allowing them to go after guys like josh howard, shannon brown, adam morrison, guys who are still young and have upside that fit in their new run, run, run system.
this cleveland team while still close to a playoff team wont win as assembled so blowing it up makes sense. as does getting multiple picks and younger players.

I wasn't thinking they'd let go both Moon and Parker
I figured it’d be one of them, which I still think if this were to be an S&T.
sizzlack, i see what you mean. cleveland probably hates us too for knocking them out of the playoffs, when if they beat us they might have won the whole thing
but we would be helping them by taking some salary back. but i believe both moon and parker are exp. deals so nevermind that idea.
the few, the proud, the boston celtics
Yeah - but i'll bet they hate Miami more
and I don’t think they’ll mind us having Shaq if it helps to knock the Heat off …
well, that's condescending
Makes you really sound like a prick.
Cleveland’s got to start rebuilding, that means getting rid of guys like Moon who are fringe contributors and have multi-year deals. They won’t trade Parker. Taking on ’Sheed’s deal doesn’t have to cost them anything, since the C’s would likely give them enough cash to handle a buyout. It’s an easy way for them to start acquiring rebuilding assets (a couple second rounders, a heavily-protected first rounder) while saving some cash over the next two seasons.
Or please, tell me what part of the CBA or NBA economics you don’t think I understand?
Moon's not multi-year.
His contract expires this year. So again, where’s the incentive?
Yes their rebuilding, and Moon isn’t exactly young anymore, so I’m not saying it’s out of the question. I said you’d have to them a good offer than really helps them in the future. So at least 1 first round, no doubt. Probably more, plus cash considerations to facilitate Sheed’s buy out.
Not worth it for the Cs, not by a long shot.

I hope its true!
Shaq has always been my favorite non-Celtic all these years, but there goes our team free throwing shooting percentage…
it's alright.
if he’s shooting free throws, even if he always misses. It means it’s putting the opponent’s bigs into foul trouble. Unless it’s a hack-a-shack, if he shoots 10 free throws a night, that’s 5 fouls for opposing big men. That’s alright, we can get the points from someone else, but they can’t give the fouls to someone else.
Also, remember that Shaq is going to be posting minutes at the C position
yes, he’ll have lower FT% than Jermaine (71.1%). But that, averaged in with his his 52.4%, will probably end up close overall to Perkins’ 60.4% …
And it's likely he'll be playing earlier in the 4th quarter...
where the fouls will add up. He probably won’t be playing at the end of the game when the free throws will actually be shot…

Shaq is better than Perk? I’d say that Shaq is a better offensive option than Perk right now, but better defensively right now? No chance. Perk is a very good post defender and one of the elite ones in the NBA not currently named Dwight Howard. Shaq can still block shots and be a force down low, but he doesn’t have the speed to compete with smaller NBA centers, Bosh could abuse Shaq by beating him off the dribble. Could Bosh abuse Perk like that? I don’t think so.

Shaq would be there for a couple of great purposes. BOXING OUT and REBOUNDING. Leave Bosh and Pau to KG and JO, they know what to do,
shaq cant guard the pick and roll
hopefully our help defense can negate his short comings. it will be nice having 3 bigs that rondo can throw alley oops too

Yeah - having 3 guys who can play the C, with different strengths
allows Doc to play matchup. That way, he protects each from his weakness and makes them all look better.
I.E. – if we do it right, we can avoid having Shaq forced to defend too many pick & roll situations.
Bosh does the same to Perk, but
can he do it to a combo of KG and Jamaine?

and with Nate and Wafer waiting for that double team defender to collapse on him.
with their ability to shoot. SWIIIIIIIIISH!
nate, wafer, ray, pierce, bradley, harangody we have guys who can hit 3’s that start and come off the bench again. nice to see. it’s also nice to know that the rest of our bigs can hit a 15 footer also, minus perk

Sorry for jabbing you for it. It just seemed a little sacrilege at the time!
I already miss Rasheed
Both Cleveland and Phoenix were better teams without him. Phoenix went from missing the play-offs to the WCF. Celtics already settle for too many jumpshots and don’t run often enough.
And no way he’s happy coming off the bench behind Perkins and Jermaine in the second half of the season.

No question.
Danny mentioned have talks with Shaq weeks ago. Those talks were him and Doc telling Big Diesel the situation. Minimum money, you have to accept whatever role we can give you. If he’s signing now, there’s no question he’s finally realized it’s his best option, and he knows what he’s agreeing to.
He just wants two more years, and he wants to win, the rest doesn’t matter. There’s no other reason for him to sign here.
He can't help himself.
He’s a complainer and the first one off a sinking ship. How many bridges has he burned?

The angle nobody talk about
I’ve mentioned this a few times in different threads but nobody has picked up on it:
Getting Shaq keeps him away from Miami (as well as all other opponents who could use him). This is not a trivial advantage. Imagine if Miami got him. They would have had a big chuck of the Cavs team of last year but with Wade replacing Mo Williams and Bosh replacing Varejao. Think about THAT.
nobody else wanted him outside of atlanta

Not true...
Plenty of other teams wanted him. But Shaq said he would only play for a contender, noone else. So that means only teams with minimum money were in the picture, Shaq said he wanted more.
So to say noone but Atlanta wanted him is false, it’s just that noone (including Atlanta) wanted to pay him more than the minimum. So what it comes down to is if he looks at all the contenders, all offering the same minimum money, where’s the best situation for him? The answer is clearly Boston.
soory, you're right
no contender wanted him, had an open roster, money and could offer him 20+ minutes outside of atlanta and they arent really a contender

The difference is that Boston is a legit contender. The only other choices were Miami (couldn’t afford him and LAL (he would never go back).

Miami signed 15. Can they waive one and sign (Shaq) before the season?
by nba is the worst on Aug 3, 2010 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions
Well, kinda...
Not sure why we’re speculating on Miami here, they never wanted Shaq to begin with, he bashed the organization when he left pretty hard.
However, Miami’s contracts are all guaranteed, meaning they’d have to buy out the deals (paying double in luxury tax) to free up a spot.
It'll be fun....
To see Shaq use all 5 of his pivot feet per posession while rooting the opponent into the third row… If he’s on our team.
When we play the Heat we can watch the officials ignore Paul’s offensive foul move, Shaq’s pivot feet, Wade’s palming and carrying, and everything the messiah does.
the heat should be sweating the bigs
big z, haslem, bosh, anthony, howard, magloire are no match for shaq, kg, jo, baby, perkins of the celtics.

Did you have a better idea for the Celtics back up Center?
And please don’t tell me Kwame Brown or Earl Barron would have been better.
Glen Davis and eventually Perkins.
The Celtics won, what, 62 games in 2008-2009 with Davis manning the middle? He may give up a lot of size, but he’s a higher effort, more mobile defender, not a distraction and his best years are yet to come.
Get used to watching Rondo walk the ball up…

Perk's hurt.
Not sure if you heard, but he has a slight problem with his ACL/MCL. Can’t be sure he’ll ever be 100% this year, so some insurance is nice.
Shaq doesn’t effect BBDs minutes at all. Davis is a great player, but he backs up KG, his minutes wont be effected, and he’s too small to play Center and back up JO for any real minutes. A backup Center was absolutely 100% a necessity for this time, due to Perk’s injury. So again, please tell me who else would have been better?
thats some serious weight there

First tell me...
Who our back up center in 2008-2009? Patrick O’Bryant?
Davis played more minutes at center than power foward that season and we won 62 games.
by The Walker Wiggle on Aug 3, 2010 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions
Um...
Davis started at PF from the minute KG went down. So… I’m confused. Powe backed him up, and Davis/O’Bryant logged minutes at Center.
He may have played some minutes, but “more than at PF” is just a downright lie, the guy started at PF for christ sakes.
actually, not quite
In 2008, BBD logged 1637 minutes
PF: ~737
C: ~900
2008-2009
Davis played 22% of the available minutes at Center. 18% of the available minutes at Power Forward. He also played more minutes than Mikki and POB combined.
by The Walker Wiggle on Aug 3, 2010 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions
That said - there is no way
that we want to go a full series against Bynum and Gasol with BBD as our #2 C.
BBD is a situational big man. He’s awesome in some situations. Other times, you need length.
+1
So I was wrong on the minutes. Doesn’t change the point.
Yeah - I agree.
‘Funny thing is, that most folks don’t realize about that year, is how effective Scal was that year, substituting for KG or Perk with the starters.
Check out the +/- numbers for the 5-man units here:
He's still got some game left
Good article on what we might expect from Shaq based on last year’s performance and in historical comparison to other centers his age: http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/08/what-can-we-really-expect-shaq-to-be.php
But here’s a tidbit: “We’ll use per-36, since that’s the Basketball-Reference average, and if you were going to exhaust a player at that age, that’s the limit you could probably expect them to play. The average per-36 for a 37 player is much more favorable, coming in at 10.8 points and 8.97 rebounds. Shaq averaged 18.5 and 10.3 per-36 last year. So his scoring percentage is in the elite of all 37 year-old centers historically, coming at 3rd on that list. His rebounds, on the other hand, were 7th among all 37 year-old centers.”
I don't care if we are desperate
This will be the Brandnew big shamrock shaq.
This team will be all about defense and the offense will come into place. If shaq wants to win a championship here. He can tell Kobe, how does his a** taste. By winning a championship with 3 different teams.

sigh
it is exciting from a historical perspective. One of the games greats will probably retire in our uniform, and that is a cool thing.
But as far as his game goes at this age….count me as underwhelmed.
Can't disagree.
He’s certainly not the answer to Banner 18. I’m not planning my trip for the parade because of the signing, no doubt. But he’ll be a useful piece to have this year, and in a limited role, could still be very good, as he is still pretty good at all the areas which were the Cs biggest problems last year (post scoring, rebounding)

we don't need his offense. we need his defense and rebounding
and he is an ugrade offensively over perk. gives boston enough size to match up with LA
True.
Defense is a shaky point though, he really hurts the pick and roll defense. But he can still alter shots underneath, and scares away pesky drivers who don’t want to take the contact and will pull up mid range shots rather than go head to head with him.
But he's a downgrade defensively from Jermaine O'Neal and Glen Davis.

Shot blocking and defensive rebounding however, he’s better.
It’s just awesome to have 2 big bodies on our team, I don’t know if Perkins will ever be 100% this season, but imagine this Perkins will defend Dwight Howard when he gets tired then Shaq will come and give Howard a hard time for 15-20 mins, it’s nice..

I don't even consider Orlando to be a top contender any more, even for the East
Top teams now are LAL, BOS and Miami, in that order. ORL is maybe 4th
Eh...
We’ll see. I think Orlando got better with QRich, and Reddick will see more time this year, so that will be good for them (I expect him to have a true break out year.) Duhon is a solid backup to Jameer.
Their not worse than last year, but their not a ton better either. Actually ya, ok, I’d put them 4th.
vince carter has a team option next season so they could deal him to a team looking to clear cap space too. they could get better.
as for not being a contender, any team that can play high quality defense and rebound can contend.

Duhon and Nelson are not very good defenders. Rondo rips them up. And Q-Rich really sucks defensively, Pierce destroys him.

Right, but ORL is a fundamentally flawed team
A bunch of 3-point shooters + Howard can go far (if they play defense and they do sometimes), but they won’t win it all. That’s why I rank them 4th.
they wouldn't be flawed if that was Hakeem "the dream" in the middle
it’s up to Dwight to learn a consistent go-to shot, hook, jumper, anything to get command double teams and free up the wings.
the Rockets won two championships with the same setup, difference is Hakeem was a major offensive force in the paint, more so than Howard, and he did it against Howard’s current big man coach, Patrick Ewing, who was one of the best defensive centers at the time, not to mention his Knicks were also a major defensive force/playoff contender at the time
I Agree
They try to open things up with 3 pt shot and the fact that most teams have to double Howard. But Perk and Shaq can handle Howard effectively one-on-one. Most teams can’t and when they double team, it opens up the 3 pt shot, creates driving lanes and once the scrambling starts it frees up Howard to attack the glass.
Vince will be gone at the deadline
17 mil off the books WILL find takers…

You gotta have 17mil on contracts to give up to make that work. I don’t see what they give up for Vince.

So maybe the lakers is a bad example, unless another team gets involved – but watch and see, someone will do a deal

And, I think it will actually increase the average age of the Celts. Seriously though, how cool would it be if Shaq retires as a Celtic and how even more cool would it be if he retires a champion!
Though, Semih, Avery and Luke will help balance the mean age a bit.
And Nate and Wafer are still young.
We might actually have a mean average age for the opening day roster that is slightly younger than last year. It will be close.
It’s true he has some problems defending the pick and roll.. but just think about it guys which other team has a player with such presence like Shaq coming off the bench? that’s what it says in the update #3 that he is willing to come out from the bench, I mean that would be so friggin awesome.

by Stanley Acosta Calderón on Aug 3, 2010 5:40 PM EDT reply actions
Aswe were playing the Cavs in the playoffs, I read here more than once that we wanted Shak playing minutes cause we could score on him and he was an offensive liability. We felt better with Shak eating up somebody elses minutes than him n the bench. Now suddenly we want Shak on our team as one of our key players? I mean, whats good for the goose is not good for the gander? Now Shak has no flaws just because he is going to join us?? No comprende.
Well, that's because...
Of Kendrick Perkins. Shaq’s offensive abilities are limited by the fact that the Celtics don’t double team him, and Perkins is one of only probably two players in Basketball that can stop him 1v1. Mike Brown is an idiot, and continued to try and pound the ball into Shaq in half court sets, when he did not have good position on Perk, and expect hi to just make something happen.
Wasn’t going to happen, Shaq doesn’t have that ability anymore. But used in the right situations, in sets where you get the ball to him lower, and against any team other than Orlando, Shaq is still a viable post presence.
He also helps the Celtics need for size and rebounding, the problem which basically lost the finals for them last year.
So, ya. It’s a different situation entirely. Shaq can’t dominate games like he could 10 years ago, but used in the right situations, he’s still very good.
Exactly
Shaq down low vs. bench 5s who are really bad 4s masquerading as 5s???? Oh my—he’ll look 10 years younger….

Remember when Dominique Wilkins signed with the Celtics...
But at least he never played for the Lakers.
by The Walker Wiggle on Aug 3, 2010 5:44 PM EDT reply actions
Can't compare...
That team to this team is completely different. Wilkins was expected to be a big part of that team, not a short minutes role player off the bench.
If the Celtics were signing Shaq right now and expecting him to be a 30 minutes 20/10 guy, there’s no chance he’s capable of that.
But their not, they want maybe 20 minutes out of him, and only expect, and need, modest numbers in the 14/8 range he put up last year.
According to Brian WIndhorst the plugged-in Plain Dealer writer, Cavs are not involved which means likely a minimum deal.
From his twitter (PDcavsinsider):
Comcast Boston reports Celtics close to a contract with Shaq. According to sources, #Cavs are not involved in sign-and-trade talks w/Celtics
So if Shaq goes to Boston, it is likely going to be on a veteran’s minimum contract of $1.4 million.

Well...
The Celtics were actually pretty lousy in the half-court most of the year. I think that was mostly a testament to Pierce’s game declining a bit (possibly due to the injuries.) The ball would stick a lot, and they jacked up way to many late shot clock shots.
Shaq (and JO for that matter too) should help that problem, giving them more option in the half-court sets.
Hm.... 'lousy' is not quite the right word.
Our half-court offense suffered for a couple of reasons, but it wasn’t really Pierce’s fault.
Through 2/3 of the season, we lacked a second 3PT shooter off the bench. We traded Eddie for Nate, but that was just a swap. Whenever we ran sets that did not include at least 2 of Ray, Pierce and Eddie/Nate our offense typically ground to a halt because with only one 3PT shooter, teams would collapse into the paint and put one man tight on whichever single 3PT shooter we did have on the floor.
If you review the offensive efficiencies of our 5-man units, its pretty glaring. For example, when Tony subbed for Ray or Pierce – it was pretty brutal on offense. Especially when he subbed for Ray. His defense sometimes made up for it – primarily in subbing for Pierce.
Not having an additional 3PT shooter is also part of the reason Doc had Sheed flipping out to the perimeter after picks so much – to help space the floor.
We finally addressed this somewhat late in the year with Finley – you’ll note that for the last couple of months of the season Sheed’s 3PT attempts basically dropped by half and he was able to play more in the post on offense. Unfortunately Finley was just too slow to provide other things we needed.
Adding Wafer and potentially Bradley and Harangody gives us a lot more long-range shooters to pull off the bench to start the season than we had last year. I am liking the look of our offense out of the gate a lot more than last year.
Pierce actually had a pretty good offensive year. His shooting was basically at career highs in every category and he still was one of the league leaders in creating free-throw attempts per FGA (i.e. drawing fouls). As our primary scoring option for our half-court offense, he was definitely not a problem overall – despite some well-remembered handful of games that we barfed on. If you watched carefully, though the ball was in his hands, many times the problem was the spacing by others on the floor. Even when we call an ‘iso’ play, it is still a team game.
One more interesting angle folks:
Aren’t you just PSYCHED for the opening day game against Miami where their weak frontline gets exposed and best of all, see Pat Riley with a scowl on his face? The network is going to HATE the Celtics for ruining their prized opening night match-up. I love it!!
Dude we still may have Sheed and if not we should get another wing eventually with that contract
Right now we are going to HAMMER everyone up front. Shaq, Jo, KG, Baby, Sheed, Perk?? Like someone else said other teams better start shooting practice early.
But yeah on opening night we may well just bulldoze those guys

Well at his age he has to remain in the best shape possible so he might lose a few more pounds even thought he is thinner than before already, he needs to stay in best shape possible his legs aren’t as strong anymore to carry such a big body so easily, if we nail Shaq and get an extra shooter I would be very pleased and I believe our chances would be pretty good.

Puke. Gag. Retch.
One of my least fav players in the league. This going to go down hard. Really hard. This is is such an anti-Celtics thing. The antithesis of Russell, Cowns and Chief. It diminishes the brand, WWRS

Different, Actually
Shaq is a walking offensive foul, which the league lets him get away with. Absolutely hate his game. That backing in thing—reduces the game to sumo wrestling. Oth loved Sheed& Co for taking down the Lakers in 04.
And it wont grow on me.
I’d stopped following the NBA around the time Reggie Lewis went down. I got back in watching the Kings and Detroit slug it out vs Shaq’s Lakers. Watching Weber-Wallace face off vs the Diesel was like a mini-version of Russell vs Wilt (skill, & athleticism vs size and power). Im amazed at the total disinterest in Celtics history being expressed here.
That history that includes signing alchoholic Vin Baker, trading with the Lakers for Kermit Washington and Gary Payton, late career signings like Pete Maravich, ’Nique, Artis Gilmore, trading for DJ when he had a bad rep and a “washed up” Walton, and Xavier McDaniel who I love but may not have been considered the prettiest player.
As for Shaq’s backing into the paint…I complained for years about it but it is impossible to ref. He is impossible to ref. To deny he was the most dominant Center of the last 15 years, and diminish his game seems like subjective damning due to dislike and overlooking objectivity.
I don’t really see how this is a grand insult to Celtics history.

Just Because
Comparing apples and oranges here, friend. DJ was a calculated risk on a head case who could play. Walton was a calculated risk on an injured guy that could play. Vin Baker was a mistake, one of the many reasons for the long drought. There were others.
I mean if you like iso ball, fine, whatever. One of the great things about Nash and Los Suns was that they got things moving again. Til they rented the Diesel.
i would love to run and gun
but the team isnt built to do it, you build around strength.
now in 2 years, i think this will be alot more of a running team, rondo’s team

This team is built for the short haul—Rondo and Los Suns ball will come after 2012.
For now, this is the by far the best team that DA could put together for a serious run, and I am grateful for it.

Just seems like you are overstating the argument against Shaq based upon your personal dislike of him as a player. Has Shaq consistently been an above average passer for a center? Yes. Do you think the C’s are really going to run their offense around Shaq iso’s? Any more than the touches Perk gets in an average game. Is Shaq a better finisher at the rim than Perk? Seems to me Shaq knows what his role will be and that he understands he isn’t going to be a first option in the offense consistently, certainly not radically more than Perk. You can’t hold Mike Brown’s poor coaching against the signing.
To maintain that Shaq can’t play seems foolish, particularly as you seem to be arguing that he couldn’t throughout his entire career. I feel he understands what his role will be, particularly if he signs for the vet min. And that role is not to be option number one on an offense with PP, Ray, Rondo and KG. If he plays a similar role in the offense as Perk do you still think it is a bad move? Especially given he is still at this point in his career a far better finisher than Perk is. Give Doc some credit that he isn’t going to redesign the offense for Perk. I still expect that the starting job is Perk’s when he gets back and Shaq has intimated that he feels the same way.
The point about the above players was the comment about the disregard for Celtics history. Pointing out many moves that one could call into question. Celtics history is a yellow brick road of good moves that is littered with many bad ones. To say this is a slap in the face to C’s history is to disregard the many pounds of debris that line that road.

Concede
Its personal, to an extent, But part of what drew me to the Celtics in the first place (I grew up in the Midwest) was that their taking down the teams with the monster centers. Its an Indian “hickory” kind of deal. Objectively, I suppose it can help the club. Aesthetically, Im still at yuck. Old habits die hard.
He can't help it if he bulldozes players smaller than him in the paint
And I don’t really expect him to say say “Excuse me” whenever he backs up someone in there
he cant help it?
But the League could if they called offensive fouls. Its not basketball! Its football!! its sumO!!!. Its a bulldozer!!!! Its ugly!!!!!. It like putting John Bohnham a jazz band!!!!!!
I think the league has started already
I sort more of those plow into the guy and dislodge him fouls called on Shaq last year than ever before.
kobe pushes off with his arm, lebron travels on 50% of his drives, etc, etc...
every star has something he gets away with. shaq is huge and is able to bully guys, thats his “gimmie”. im not a big fan either but hey, i cant change the game, it is what it is.

Fantastic if true.
Seriously. I want to hear a coherent argument against this signing at the vet min. I’m tipping a hat to DA.
I think everything has been summed up
nicely here. I spent the better part of my metro ride reading the comments. I’m going to hold judgment until I hear the details of the deal. If it’s reasonable, I think it’s a no-brainer. I’m kind of shocked for those scoffing at the move. Perk won’t be anywhere close to 100% until around playoff time. As of right now, we’d have to be holding down the fort with BBD as a backup center while he is MUCH better suited playing backup to KG at the 4. There’s absolutely no downside to having extra depth at center when you’re deep in the playoffs. I think this solves a potentially devastating issue with KG’s rebounding having taken a huge nose-dive post-injury. His post-presence will also be huge, since he’s a great passer. How many times last year did you see Rondo blow by 2 defenders and drop the ball off to Perk just to see Perk take a dribble, fake a couple of times, and take a weak fadeaway, lose the ball, or travel? Shaq can def clean that up effectively. There was NO better option out there and it filled what become one of our biggest needs after Perk’s injury. Hands down. I think we are dangerously thin at the wing, though. I was in love with MD’s signing last year but he was just never the same after returning from the hand injury. Paul and Ray were gassed last year. Another year of age, no TA…..I must admit, it’s got me worried.
This could be interesting when Perkins comes back
if he’s even 80% ready we have a nice line up of bigs for the style of playoff ball
You heard it here first
Bret Farvre will come out of retirement to become a wing with the Boston Celtics
he can work for tommy on the road
we could use a little twang to spruce things up

Your Amusing Aristotle..
… can move his feet fast enough to fill the lanes. THree years past his prime and still the anit-celtics. Yay. He dint work out in Phoenix and he dint get Bronnie Bron Bron a ring. Is the blog drinking five year old kool-ade?
I don't like the move
But it’s an easy financial decision for the franchise. Shaq is very marketable and he has tons of great matchups around the league. It’s also fun as a fan to know there is not going to be one night this year that isn’t going to be a rager.
On the court, the Celtics aren’t a great fit for Shaq’s game. He’s not good enough to monopolize the amount of possessions he does, and isn’t even a great fit for the talent they have on the second unit. Over time, I expect he fits in more as a Perk replacement that someone who can play with the speedy Rondo, Nate, Bradley and a bench full of players who should be able to run.
In objecting to Shaq's arrival, SuperL, at least you're being consistent.
However, since you’re willing to have him play as Perkins’ replacement, then you’re apparently conceding he’d make the Celtics a better team. And that’s probably enough for us in this situation, when there’s no guarantee Perkins will be back in form this season.
Caveat emptor
Guys, Shaw totally messed up the Suns. They had a good thing going and he totally screwed up their identity. Didnt do much for Bron in Oh-hi-O either. Kool-ade five years past the sell date.
yeah but if its 5 year old kool-aide or my own urine i drink the kool-aide.
shaq is/was the best available big out there and he fits out help defense well and gives us a low post scorer (whens the last time you could say that?). i mean who else would you rather of had? kwame? barron? scal? shaq is the most talented out of all of the available bigs
im not a fan, i didnt want him but with all other options gone and rasheed deal not close ive accepted it for what it is. a solid move for teh best available big left.

The beauty of Sheed’s contract is that we either get Sheed back or a decent wing. It is a win-win. Having Sheed back with the other bigs will be ridiculous. We will still have speed with Rondo, Nate, Wafer and hopefully Fernandez. What is the latest with Rudy? If we sign him, we had a better off season thant the Heat.
by JPV on Aug 4, 2010 9:30 AM EDT up reply actions
If hes signed at the vet min
this is definitely a triumph of DA.
Why isn't anyone mentioning the PURE GENIUS of this move?
Am i super excited about Shaq joining the Celtics? no.
Shaq has been one of my favorite players of all time, even when he was a Laker.
But that isn’t the genius of this move, why did we leave that 18th banner in LA?. .. other than 10 of the last 15 Laker points coming from the free throw line that is.
Rebounds, when Perk went down Sheed did an admirable job filling in for him, better than expected. But it was 2 7 footers against 3 (more or less), that’s all bad. Could have won, should have won. . . but it is what it is, the rivalry is officially renewed.
now we have KG,Perk, the O’Neal boys. But what nobody is mentioning, we STILL have Sheed. Sure he’s “retired”. . . so was Grandpa Brown (aka PJ Brown in 2008 at the deadline), he came on for the playoffs and was solid.
We know Sheed doesn’t do the regular season, we will have 4 7footers (well, 3 plus Perk) AND Sheed when he comes out of retirement for the playoffs.
does this guarantee the rebounds will be rectified? No. But i’ll take 5 7footers (or 4 3/4) in the lineup over 3.
that is where the true brilliance of this move comes into play, now if we could just get Rudy it would be perfect.
not a genius move...yet....
for 2 reasons. 1. hes not really a reliable solution to the rebound problem 2. more importantly, we dont know the details of the deal yet. If hes signed to a low short term contract, then yes this is a genius move.
Well, the last i read he is taking the minimum
provided this is the reality of the situation of course.
and Shaq did avg. what? 5.5rpg? something like that That would help over Glen’s, or what we were getting from Sheed.
an extra 6rpg may not solve the rebound issue, but it would definitely help . Get Sheed back before the playoffs, and that is 4 top tier low post defenders, not to mention 24 fouls our bigs can give. one player isn’t going to solve it, but with the moves already made and providing Sheed comes back at the deadline. It would be a different situation from last year, gotta admit that much at the least.
the 5.5 rb/g is not as telling as DRB% = 24%
That shows he is still an elite rebounder.
Wow - he lives!
Hadn’t seen you since game 6…

big baby is a brute
In the summer of 2001, holding a basketball camp on the campus of Louisiana State University, O’Neal was challenged to a friendly wrestling match by LSU alumnus and current Boston Celtics player Glen “Big Baby” Davis, then 15 years of age and attending high school. O’Neal, weighing 350 lb (160 kg; 25 st), was impressed by the youngster, who had lifted and body-slammed him to the ground.

heck we are old but good
miami & riley can go to hell
If this is true, you can go ahead and retire his number in YOUR rafters
He burned bridges in Orlando, L.A., Miami, and Phoenix. He asked Kobe how his ass tastes after the 2008 finals loss to you guys. I used to say “I don’t hate Shaq, it’s just business. He did, afterall, help bring a dynasty to the Lakers.” But he just kept digging himself a hole, and now he finally put the nail in the coffin.
Well let me welcome everybody to the wild wild west. A state that's untouchable like Elliot Ness.
well shaq didnt look so BIG on that kimmel interveiw
looks like he’s working on his weight on the offseason
Have to admit
I didn’t think that he played like that last year, maybe he will be a great fit for the Celtics after all. since he still draws double teams.
can’t count our Green Monsters before they sign though

A side of Shaq, please
With JO and Shaq, KG doesn’t have to bang down low with the more physical 4s & 5s and that is going to bode well for us come next spring.
Obviously, he has some offensive drawbacks (lack of movement and terrible FT shooting %), but he gives us the beef to compete with Orlando and the Lakers.
As someone pointed out already—this team is already slow and built for THIS year, so given the circumstances, bringing Shaq aboard is close to ideal.
shaq vs perk
Ok, I want to add to the “shaq will slow us down” theory by comnparing shaq vs perk. Now dont take this the wrong way because I believe Perk has developed into a great center and theres not many more centers I would take over him. But heres the deal. Shaq offensively is better ten fold. Perk cant score with his back to the hoop. He travels all the time (turnover). Doesnt rebound offensively. He sets the worst picks and gets called for illegal screens all the time (turnover). He doesnt pass well to cutters (turnover). He gets technicals all the time (worse than a turnover). He is not very fast and is always the last one up the floor on offense. He is a huge liability on offense. Shaq on the other hand, passes well from the post. He is almost automatic from the paint area. He is huge and sets great screens just because he is so big. (picture ray running off a screen from shaq, can you say wide open??) He doesnt get techs very often and is the same speed as perk running the floor, rebounds pretty well and can stop the bleeding when we are slumping on offense (which happens all the time) by getting an easy hoop or 2 when we need it. Perk cant do that at all….That is a HUGE upgrade..Now defensively Perk is great. Plays great 1 on 1 defense. He is one of the best help defenders in the league. Still needs work on the pick and roll. He is a very good rebounder on defense and he plays dwight howard like no one else can (most of the time, DH cant always be stopped no matter who you are) Shaq is a pretty good 1 on 1 defender, is a great rebounder, needs help with the pick and roll also and just an average help defender..so perk has the advantage on defense right? Well thats true most of the time, until you match up against the elite teams. They both have size but shaq has one thing perk doesnt…length…Shaq was handling perk in most of the games against clev because of his length…and think of the reason the lakers beat us…rebounding and Bynum…Bynum was hurt but when he was in the game, and still he couldnt be stopped..perk couldnt handle him and kg had to help which left gasol (cant stand him) open a lot for easy put backs..In the first quarter of game 7 the lakers had 9 offensive rebounds in the first 8 minutes or so ( we should have been up 20)…thats where shaq makes a difference on defense..he moves bodies and has the length to contest a bynum type player with length and size.. in the first gome of the finals i think the lakers came down 3 times in a row and just lobbed it up to bynum even with perk on him and it looked like an adult holding candy over his head while little children jumped and waved helplessly to try to get at it.. shaq changes all that. I love perk, but shaq is a huge upgrade by those standards…pheonix and cleveland didnt know how to use shaq, thats why it seemed like he hurt them, when it was actually the coaches who hurt their teams…
great post
agree about the Bynum points. Thought I was the only one that saw that Bynum was one of the top 2 reasons why LA won this year and not in 08.

perk cant help the team till at least feb..and you saw how long it took kg to get back into decent ball playing condition and he is a animal when it comes to training and work ethic..do you really think perk is going to help us this year? If he comes back at all he will be a non factor this year…shaq will be his replacement, thats why the comparison.

Shaq to Celtics is destiny
I’ve been thinking it since before free agency opened

a.i wud only really fit if we traded bradley for rudy
Yeah right.... in 2001
How much did each of these guys make in 2001? The payroll of this team will be 2 or even 3 times of the cap.
perk is a big ? because of the injury and how much time he will really need to recover. i don’t think we get much from him this year. i hope shaq does not think like sheed and figures that the regular season is a time out period. shaq is a load and loads are generally not in good shape, especially old loads. 20 mins, a game- that’s all. the turk will have to give us some minutes . hope he can rebound and move his feet on d.
He didn't look that convincing in the SL
at least to me
If he signs for the vet minimum...
you gotta give it up for DA…He’ll have done quite a bit without much to work with…

really?
well lets see, bynum is real fast on his one knee and im pretty sure he shoots less than 60% from the line…and do the heat even have a center?? ohh yea they have big z who cleveland traded last year, and the team he was traded to cut him because they didnt even want him and when he went back to cleveland he was like 5th on the depth chart way behind shaq (he was the starter)…so what your saying makes a lot of sense

how about a starting line-up like this:
C – SHAQ
PF – JERMAINE
SF – KG
SG – PIERCE
PG – RONDO
ray allen will be d 6th man off d bench to rest pierce. then pierce can rest KG, big baby on shaq with jermaine moving to center.
i remember KG used to be a SF in his wolves days and pierce used to be an SG with the celts.
excited to meet d lakers in a rematch, let’s see how gasol and bynum can match up in rebounding with shaq, jermaine and KG.
nice
it would be nice but kg would have to cover people like lebron and carmello…he cant do that anymore….if it was 5 years ago with a current rondo that would equal 5 straight titles though
5 yrs ago you wouldn't have needed Rondo with that lineup
Dana Barros could have been running the point and it would have been an unstoppable lineup. I like it’s chances right now…

C'mon down, Shaq!!!!
If or when he signs, I guess it’s understood that he’s aware he’s coming off the bench.. and i think Shaq coming off the bench is a win-win situation! Hmm… Some are thinking of the possible “logjam” in position when Perk comes back. I guess there can be a possible, experimental lineup especially against other half court offense teams.. like maybe Shaq, of course, at center then Jermaine or a (hopefully) healthy Perk sliding to PF while KG rests? “The more the bigger the better!” hehe. Boston-LA! Let’s do this again!
We will Demolish the Lakers!
The only reason Gasol was any good this time around, was because of Bynum. Veee will cruush Bynum.

Reily was like yeah, that was to much. Celtics never did that when we got Allen and kg. We will come out when it’s playoff time.

Big Baby's face (or is that Perk?) in this article's picture...
…is definitely not in an enviable position!
Shaq
As a diehard 30 year Laker fan I am so hoping you guys get Shaq. If history is accurate you’ll probably average about one healthy O’Neal at any given time. But I also hope both of them and Perkins are all healthy come playoff time so you can kick LeBronze’s ass and face us in the finals again.
I wouldn’t want Phil’s fourth three-peat and our record tying 17th championship to come against anyone but you!
hey K.G. was titled as the "green machine"!
just call him Green Diesel - not of full power, because he’s coming from the bench^^

I can't believe you guys are so happy about this
If say Rondo bounced around the league (all the while looking to ride on the back of another superstar) for 10 years and ended up playing for the Lakers I would never cheer him. Whatever, I hope you guys end up hating Shaq as much as I hate him right now.
In Soviet Russia, LA beats you.
because it would embarass Kobe, if Shaq ties him again^^
(You guys are lucky bastards – hadn’t beat us with Perk on the floor .)
ahaha
alrite man. I mean, it’s not like we were missing our starting center for a game or 6 in 08.
In Soviet Russia, LA beats you.
Here's the thing though...
That series wasn’t even close. So your argument has less weight.
yeah, but you had an all-star to replace him with
Perk going down in game 6 hurt us a LOT MORE. But you had 60+ games with your NEW All-star Center when Bynum went down to prepare for the finals without him.
the Celtics had. . . . Sheed. . . . and that was it.
not exactly equal now is it?
fail for not being smart
C’mon, do you really think Ronny Turiaf is equal to Rasheed Wallace?
You might be confused by what I’m asking.
2008 – Gasol, Odom, Turiaf vs. Garnett, Perkins, Davis, and Brown – Advantage to Boston
2010 – Bynum, Gasol, Odom vs. Garnett, Perkins, Wallace, Davis – Advantage to Los Angeles (even b4 Perk got hurt).

Except the advantage WASN'T to LA, "even b4 Perk got hurt".
Prior to Perk’s injury, the advantage was 3-2, Boston.
I thought we were talking big men
Not the games. Because the way i remembered it, Boston won Game 2 not because they were better down low, but because Ray Allen and Rondo played their only great games of the series.

what else matters but what's on the scoreboard, when talking about 'advantage'.
Notably – the Celtics won the rebounding battle in the 3 games that they won. Maybe the big men had something to do with that.
This deal all depends on the contract
Let´s say this deal gets done and Shaq is signed without touching Rasheed´s contract, then we have a steal. I cannot think of a better backup big guy at the moment than Shaq despite him being slow.
However, if we used Sheed´s contracts to get this done then we have made a mistake.
crapshoot at best
if Perk is ready come playoffs and JO is functional then we’d be better with Sheed & Baby filling in as opposed to Shaq…but if Perk and/or JO aren’t ready than Shaq could help…but not much…can Danny release Shaq if he feels he sucks?? easier said then done…sad as it sounds, come playoffs,Sheed is probably a better option than Perk,JO or Shaq…maybe a PJ deal for Sheed???…if Perk can’t play, his ending deal will come in handy at deadline with Baby’s,Daniels etc…we’re stuck signing guys like Nate,Wafer,Shaq,Daniels etc etc then Danny has 7 months till the playoffs….good luck
Broussard and Blakely's newest tweets: the deal is done
Shaq should be signing today, possibly a 2 year deal for the veteran’s minimum, with year 2 as a player option. Considering our bigs depth issue (with Perk’s injury and JO’s own injury history), Shaq at the minimum is great. He can still do some serious things for 20 mpg.
WOW,Where do I start...
1. we will be the worst FT shooting team in the league with Rondo,Shaq, Perk etc
2. Our transition D just took a hit
3. We now have the beefiest if not the slowest front court in the league.
4. how about a front court of shaq, perk and Baby. I’m, laughing just thinking about it.
5.Hopefully shaq doesn’t hurt anyone in practice
6. Doc Rivers will have his hands full figuring out what to do with shaq on defense and offense
7. the whole damn thing is exciting
8. what if wallace doesn’t retire. again, I’m laughing at the prospect of having the biggest, oldest, slowest front court in the league
Good points to talk about.
1. As Stanford_Fan pointed out, Shaq will likely usually be on the floor for the early 4th, when fouls are committed, but not at the end, when teams are past the limit and actually taking most of the shots. That is when JO (Who is a decent FT shooter at ~72%) will be on the floor. So that pretty much washes the Shaq FT effect out. In fact, it plays to our advantage if teams try to hack Shaq early. Most of the rest of the guys we added are all pretty decent FT shooters (for example, Wafer is an upgrade at FT% over Tony Allen).
2. Yes, our transition D as well as our pick & roll D when Shaq is on the floor took a hit. Both those can be schemed around. It helps that Shaq will have 3 very fast wings on the floor with him (Daniels, Nate & Wafer) who should be able to stay in front of any break. The pick & roll problem will probably be addressed via matchups. By putting Shaq out there against mostly second teams, very few teams have the talent at both PG & C on the second team to run the P&R so well that it will be a consistent problem. Plus, it is possible to scheme the defense to cover this weakness when you can’t avoid the matchups. Also, in addition to those two defensive areas of weakness, Shaq also brings some defensive strengths, such as post-up man defense, shot blocking and he’s still an excellent defensive rebounder.
3. Shaq is slow, but not that much slower than Perk. BBD and JO both move up & down the court pretty well for big men. KG looked faster and faster as the year ended and his legs got stronger – I expect he will look pretty spry to start this new year.
4. Huge – not likely, though, since both Shaq & Perk both play C. That said a Shaq, BBD + Harangody front court is highly likely to happen once in a while. THAT’s a lot of mass to have on one end of the court. ’Could cause seismic upheaval ….
5. !!!
6. Yes – but Doc (and Larry and Cliff) are a helluva lot smarter (imho) than Shaq’s last coach. And he’s less constrained than Brown was regarding personnel utilization (no Lebron factor here). Given this summer and all of training camp to scheme and devise, I am fairly certain Doc will figure out ways to use Shaq’s talents and to hide his weaknesses. This is true of all players – they all have strengths and weaknesses and it is up to the coaching staff to figure out how to best use them.
7. Yeah – on paper right now, this team (assuming Shaq signs) looks amazingly deep and talented. Especially if Perk can come back and be effective.
8. !!!!!!!! That is not likely, but what a set of big men that would constitute: JO, Perk, Shaq, Sheed, KG, BBD, … A 6-deep big-man rotation!!!! Talk about a lot of fouls to give in the post!!!
Doc will figure out ways to use Shaq’s talents and to hide his weaknesses.
pretty hard to hide old age and team chemistry problems… go ask the Suns…
totally different team
a poor match for shaq.
They were and are a run & gun team. The 2008-2009 Suns played at the 4th highest pace (96 possessions per team per game).
The Celtics are on the opposite end – 18th that year at just 90.4 and 23rd this last year at 91.6. The Celtics play a grind-it-out style that uses far more half-court sets on both ends of the court.
The Celtics play a grind-it-out style that uses far more half-court sets
that type of grind it out style is what lost them the championship, they were a much better team in transition with Rondo either getting to the paint or finding the open shooters behind the arc,.. every Celtics huddle you got to listen in on, Doc was screaming at them to run, run, keep pushing,.. they had a tough time scoring in half court sets with the Lakers unbelievable half court D,.. but your right, the Suns were not a good fit for Shaq, hope he contributes something decent in his last year as a C…
you misunderstood
I said ‘uses far more half-court sets on both ends of the court’.
The Celtics do always prefer, like all teams, to get out on transition for offense. But that is triggered by their defense forcing turnovers or bad shots. The defense does this at a high clip because they take away their opponent’s transition game and force their opponent to play half-court basketball.
A transition possession will convert points at a higher rate than a half court possession will, but you still need your half court offense to be as efficient as possible because part of preventing the other team from getting out on transition is to force them to side out. Generally, the Celtics were one of the top teams in terms of FG% because they were able to generate looks at the hoop with their floor spacing and ability to attack the basket.
The thing that killed us in Game 7’s deciding 4th quarter was not the style of offense that the Celtics run. It was the lack of Perkins to absorb minutes – which lead to an exhausted big man rotation to commit too many lazy fouls. Once we started sending the Lakers to the FT line (where to their credit they converted) we were forced to always in-bounds the basketball, which completely eliminated our transition game. Yes, Doc was imploring them to run and get ahead of the defense, but it is very difficult when you have to keep doing it from an in-bounds and go the length of the court.
Celtics do always prefer, like all teams, to get out on transition for offense
.. great point, and Rondo is one of the best facilitators in the game in transition. I see your point, and the C’s do have good spacing when forced into half court play, and with Pierce and Allen, they are lethal.
Game 7,.. your right, lazy fouls gave the Lakers a chance to win it at the line, which they did,.. when Perkins went down in Game 6, I knew we had it.. (even though throughout 31/2 quarters in game 7 I was sweating..) because no one could lock up Gasol like Perkins could.. I love Gasol, think he is the best big man in the game offensively,.. but Perkin gave him lots of trouble due to his strength,.. Gasol always caught the ball out of his comfort zone.
But oh well, the games went the way they did, Lakers pulled out a huge win when needed, and Kobe has #5, cant change that :-)
IMO, I beleive game 3 was the most critical game of the series,.. without Fishers “will” shots, Lakers maybe go down in game 5 in TD Garden…
I agree about Game 3.
The Celtics literally blew about 9 or 10 point-blank gimme layups and dunks in that game. If they make just half those (and those are the kinds of shots you normally make 90% of) then they would have won that game – and the series would have been over in 5. And Perk would not have been injured.
But instead, they missed them and, as you said, Fisher made his. And we all know how it turned out.
What if Sheed pulls a PJ Brown
THAT is what i’m counting on personally!
Sheed, the O’Neal Boys, KG, Perk, Baby. not counting the rook, are you kidding me? c’mon, can you say matchups ?
that is 3 bigs who can shoot (Sheed,KG,Baby), 3 top tier lop post scorers (Sheed,Shaq,KG), 3 top tier interior defenders (KG,Sheed,Shaq) ,, 4 very good shot blockers (Perk,Shaq,JO,KG).
not even mentioning that we have 3 bigs who can play the 4 OR the 5 (KG,Baby,JO). then 3 players at C (Perk,Shaq,Sheed).
they could all play 15mpg and throw so much havok into game plans and defenses, what Doc would be able to do on the fly to counter what other teams do is unreal when you think about it.
the biggest weakness would be the quicker teams. . . but that has been a supposed weakness since 2008 of this team, and it has yet to bite us in the playoffs.
it’s going to be fun because Doc has a VERY wide array of VERY talented and versatile bigs to play with now.
not to mention getting a 12/6 center for 1.4mill a year.
man, this could be an even better year than last year.
quick teams are easy to defuse when you have that many bigs
because you have so many fouls to give, you force them to take free throws to score, and slow the game down.
That’s why fast teams tend to slow down when playoffs hit.
What happens when Shaq is out of the playoff rotation?
Do you really think he’s just going to sit there on the bench and be happy? It’s going to be a disaster. Sure, we could use from minutes from him while Perk is out. But if this team is fully healthy for the playoffs, there are no minutes for Shaq unless you bench Davis.
I doubt that will work that way.
More likely, Doc will use alternating and matchup-based rotations game-to-game.
You don’t want to use two-deep of a big-man rotation because if guys only get 10 minutes to play, they never get into the flow of the game. Doc usually goes with a 4 man rotation through the C & PF positions (for example, KG, BBD, Sheed & Perk last year) which gets each player a healthy chunk of minutes while keeping legs fresh and spreading out fouls. Unfortunately, as we all know, in the final Game 6 & 7, he had to go with just KG, Sheed & BBD and they ran out of gas in the end.
Assuming Shaq is signed and Perk is healthy at the end, he’ll have 5 quality veteran bigs at his disposal. (If Sheed came back, he’d actually have SIX!). Six guys sharing 96 minutes at C & PF would get ridiculously chopped up (just an avg of 16 minutes each) – no one would get in the flow of the game.
More likely Doc will have the option of using one set of 4 for one game, then another set in the next game. I.E. Try to give guys whole games off one day and then play them a lot the next. I don’t expect Shaq would have any problem with that.
And its far better to have excess big men than not. In the playoffs, you need those fouls to give.
you don't have to bench Baby
Shaq plays best as a Center. Baby plays best as a PF.
Bottom line...
We are getting a top ten player in the history of the NBA, who is a top 3 center in the league’s history. He is past his prime, but has shown he can still contribute and still wants to win. He is coming for less money than he can get elsewhere (reportedly the Nets would have given him $8 million over 2 seasons to draw fans to his hometown of Newark). Shaq is going to be in a back-up role and very motivated, this is almost a can’t lose situation. The only potential downside is the opportunity cost of a roster spot, but really are there any other great players out there that would sign for the vet minimum? Iverson and T-Ma are all that comes to mind, and I think Shaq can offer this team more than they can. This is a STEAL.
Per ESPN - he's signing for the Veterans Minimum!
The length of the contract is not known, but O’Neal, who has been seeking a two-year deal, will play for the veteran’s minimum of $1.4 million annually.
We still have another bullet in the gun with the Sheed’s Contract
Comment Record?
What’s the record for comments on a front page post? This is 395 but I bet it was higher during the KG trade days.
I wanted comment #400
