Delonte Rumor (via Red's Army)

Another unsubstantiated Delonte rumor - RedsArmy.com

I'm going to pass this along with one huge caveat: This is an unconfirmed email we just got. It says Delonte is at New England Baptist Hospital right now getting a pre-signing physical. Again... this is an unsubstantiated rumor ...

Just passing it along.

Updatevia the Herald

[We hear] that former Celtic Delonte West, who was recently waived by the Minnesota Timberwolves, was apartment hunting in Waltham

Thats AWESOME if its true

by Ante Gamisou on Aug 31, 2010 8:21 PM EDT reply actions

Hope its true...

if so it would be a steal for the C’s to sign him if its just a minimum contract.

Delonte can shoot, handle the ball and defend tenaciously.

He will also bring young legs off the bench.

by fordescort on Aug 31, 2010 8:24 PM EDT reply actions

Can't agree.

We need a defensive backup for Pierce. West isn’t it. He’s not tall or big enough.

Meanwhile, Allen, Daniels, Wafer, and Bradley can all defend the kind of guys that Delonte could hanndle. Nor do we need another ball-handler. West would be superfluous.

by mcpu40 on Aug 31, 2010 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, BUT...

…. there ain’t much out there for legit 3s.

Delonte >>>>>> Wafer. Delonte >>>> Nate. He makes the team better.

And, if a rotation-caliber SF becomes available, Wafer’s only guaranteed $150k. They’d eat that, if necessary.

So, I’ll take Delonte now, and let the SF position shake out as it may. Quis ain’t hurt yet!

by theBird on Aug 31, 2010 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions

That's how I see it...

If a legit 3 pops up, cut Wafer or Erden.

I’ll take Nate and Wafer any day of the week over what Delonte…

by SalmonAndMashedPotatoes on Aug 31, 2010 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, theBird

If and when a good SF backup becomes available they can easily cut Erden or Wafer. I’ve thought for a long time that Erden won’t be on the roster when the season starts.

Signing West would mean that Daniels is the defensive backup 3.

by guava_wrench on Aug 31, 2010 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Well...

I agree 100 % we do need a legit back up for Pierce (not just a defensive one but a shooter also) but Id rather do that by trading Daniels who I am not a big fan of in order acuire one.

The loss of TA is a huge loss since he was a bigtime wing defender and one of the best in the NBA.
That defensive hole must be filled before the playoffs no doubt.

Maybe Danny can make a trade during preseason or at the trade deadline and get such a small forward in exchange for Daniels …at least that’s my hope.

But signing Delonte I think would be a steal to for the veteran minimum so I do not think it would be wise to pass on him and let such a opportunity to sign such a talented player at such a small fee pass by.

by fordescort on Aug 31, 2010 10:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Not a fan of the Marquis signing either.

But maybe he can contribute but there’s always the trade option if he doesn’t pan out. I don’t even know what Delonte will bring to the table in that system. I guess offensively, for the minutes he’s going to get, you can say he might contribute. No D.

by leonitus on Sep 1, 2010 1:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Huh?

That can’t be further from the truth, Delonte is actually a very good defender at either guard position. Truth is, West is an extremely talented player, and a positive influence on the court for just about any team he’d play for. He’s a steal at a vet min, and as far as basketball talent goes, is easily worth an MLE. But all the off the court issues are what scare teams away.

by Sizzlack on Sep 1, 2010 9:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Delonte can play defense....

he is strong, athletic and quick when playing defense…just what you want in a defender.

He is not in the caliber of TA but he is in no way a bad defender.

by fordescort on Sep 1, 2010 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions

but at vet minimum it is still a steal

i agree we’d need a defensive 3 more badly, but getting delonte works in another direction to improve the roster or at least add trade chips there.

by friedgreentomatoes on Aug 31, 2010 11:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Nothing I know about Delonte...

That Danny doesn’t know better. Guys with Delonte’s type of problems can “Go Postal”. But I’m a fan, not a psychiatriest. I assume Danny has looked up, down and around and if he signs him, I’m excited for the player West can be.

by guava_wrench on Sep 1, 2010 1:54 AM EDT up reply actions

NO!

This blog always reports, and we are the ones that speculate!
When was the last time you seen this blog speculate about a signing or something else. They only report rumors that are made by (ESPN,Yahoo,FanHouse, and by guys like Chris Rosenberg)

by businessbmw on Sep 1, 2010 1:37 AM EDT up reply actions

An example...

This blog was one of the very first to “report” — and comment on — the KG rumor, which came to us unsubstantiated. It turned out to be true. Other rumors we’ve heard — both from media sources and less substantiated sources (i.e., that Tony had re-signed, that Starbury was coming back) — turned out to be false. We still discussed them.

I don’t know, CelticsBlog has a fairly long history of doing things like this. On any rumor he hears, Jeff has to do a balancing test between keeping people informed of scuttlebutt, versus credibility of the sources. I think he walks that line pretty well.

I like the things he does well — shoot, ballhandling, defending the 2 — but it seems like boston could use someone bigger for the 3. If West is added, though, I certainly won’t be sad, because he can definitely help the team.

… so probably not.

by Roy_Hobbs on Aug 31, 2010 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

But

It does create the opportunity to trade mid-season.

Pierce / Daniels
Allen / West
Rondo / Nate

Is probably too deep. In that rotation I’d see West or Daniels getting almost all of the backup wing minutes and Allen or Pierce playing in their unnatural wing position. Most likely West at SG and Allen at SF. With Daniels as the reserve wing and Nate as Rondo’s understudy getting 10+ per game. With AB and Wafer around for reserve purposes and west as the primary guard off the bench, the C’s could move both Daniels and Nate in an attempt to get better SF depth, something they can’t do now.

by Brendan on Sep 1, 2010 8:33 AM EDT up reply actions

eh

delonte is a solid bench player, good bball IQ, can play decent defense, and can hit shots. but he’s a 2. we need a 3. of course, there may be nothing out there as far as 3s go, so if we have no other options to fill roster spot #15, delonte is certainly a steal for a minimum contract.

by guy incognito on Aug 31, 2010 11:26 PM EDT reply actions

We'd be dumb not to want Delonte

Yes he’s a nutbag, but he’s good. During that 2008 7 game series against the Cavs, he was basically the number 2 option to Lebron.

He’s fallen out of favor due to his mental problems and uhmmm…rumors involving Lebron’s mama…but that’s all the more reason why we’d be able to snatch him up. No other team knows him as well as the C’s do (except the Cavs, but of course they don’t want him anymore).

If Danny were to get Delonte, it would be a STEAL. Don’t focus on the positional aspects involving this team’s needs! We’ve got until the playoffs for that. In addition, remember that there is only one team against whom we TRULY need a backup defending 3…Miami of course. Against most teams, we can rely on a smaller, offensively oriented bench, and this will be enough to win 55 or 60 plus in the regular season.

The point is that Delonte is an asset…a potentially very valuable one. This team may do very well in utilizing Delonte with Nate, Marquis and Von Wafer off the bench…or they could package any combination of aformentioned players for a vaunted backup 3 defender. The possibilities are limitless when the assets are there, and since the Celtics are one of the best organizations at milking potential from notorious question-mark-type players (Nate, Baby, Rondo), we must expect that the acquisition of Delonte will net us either consistent production, or an even more valuable trade down the line.
I hope this rumor is true.

new rumor!!!!

My source say he is right outside of Tombstone Arizona hiding out at the OK Corral until his latest motorcycle is finished…..then he will ride it into Boston with guns a blazin..for the season opener against Lebron…..

Delonte West to Lebron on opening night: I am the new sheriff in these parts, and me and your Mom want you want you out of beantown by sundown

Now git!!!!

Is it Soup Yet?

by Master Po on Sep 1, 2010 12:23 AM EDT reply actions

Don`t do it, Danny!

Everything about Delonte is “disturbing”.

His clinical depression….his penchant for guns….his relationship with LeBron`s mother….his tattoos that extend up to his neck…..his inability to speak coherently…etc.

Not what we need……he`s a human tragedy waiting to happen!!!

by Title 18 on Sep 1, 2010 12:33 AM EDT reply actions

But he had his best years in Boston, and Doc knows him well.

Plus, there’s no better talent out there for that last roster spot, and for a vet min than Delonte. He is far and away the best player available in FA right now, and really it’s not even close. Granted the personal issues are a concern, but with his kind of talent, on a vet min deal you can easily walk away from if need be, I don’t see the downside.

But that’s why we got you here my friend, you always seem to find a way to make the glass half empty. Well done once again!

by Sizzlack on Sep 1, 2010 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Thanks.....

Sometimes I do see the glass as being more than half full…but only when the contents of the glass is unpalatable!

West is a decent player but, he brings with him a “creep factor” I do not care to see. He`s the only Celtic player that has ever made me cringe with embarrassment when he has been interviewed.

In any event, he is about to join his 4th team in the past 5 NBA seasons…so, I might not be the only one he`s been creeping out!.

by Title 18 on Sep 1, 2010 11:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Telfair didn't elicit the cringe factor?

I like Delonte. I think this organization has a great supportive structure in place, and a management and coaching staff that’s well familiar with Delonte’s issues. I think he can thrive here.

I’ve expected him to sign with the Celtics ever since the suspension was decided. WAY too much upside not to do it, and easy to waive if there’s problems.

by nba is the worst on Sep 1, 2010 9:03 AM EDT reply actions

Who is that pretty woman along side Delonte pictured currently at the top of this post?

Is it his or girl friend or wife?

If it is and it means she will be court side during Celtic games (where we can get shots of her on tv ) maybe that is reason enough to sign Delone…lol

by fordescort on Sep 1, 2010 11:54 AM EDT reply actions

Gaffney

Gaffney has been plan B. If West has been in for workouts, I would imagine Gaffney and Lafayette, and maybe even Gody, and Wafer were also on the court. Regardless of the need, its not hard to see this as an upgrade. Plus if Wafer can be dropped for only $150, then they really haven’t closed off any options.

by Bozo on Sep 1, 2010 11:56 AM EDT reply actions

Exactly.

Wafer and West are insurance to each other. Their both major ?s for the mental issues, but if one tanks, the other is there. Let’s just hope they both don’t…
