Report: Delonte's Back

Teammates

Steve Bulpett has the (good) news:

A league source confirmed moments ago that the former Celts guard is prepared to sign a free-agent deal with the team. . . . According to a source, West will sign a non-guaranteed contract and will be on hand when the team begins camp this fall.

It's great to have you back, Delonte.  Let's all give Danny applause for making this happen, especially on a non-guaranteed deal.

UPDATEAccording to the Globe, Danny confirmed the signing, but would not discuss contract terms.

man this team is going to be deep this year, esp once Perk gets back, no one will be able to match our depth..

J.O’Neal—Shaq— Perk
Garnett— Big Baby— Harangody
Pierce - Daniels-Wafer
Allen— Delonte—Avery Bradley
Rondo— Nate Robinson

by mloyko54 on Sep 1, 2010 2:28 PM EDT reply actions

you don't WIN because of depth...

… but if you don’t have it, good chance you’ll lose, especially a team like ours.

Facts is facts, we’re still an old team. Old teams tend to get hurt. Now, if Ray Allen goes down, we’ve got Delonte West who can step up and who has experience playing big minutes deep into the playoffs. Same with Rondo; we’re still probably hosed if he goes down, but we’ve still got a puncher’s chance if Delonte’s there instead of relying on NateRob (and Bradley as HIS backup).

by theBird on Sep 1, 2010 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions

We really need Pierce to remain healthy though. Starting Ray at SF would be tough.

Yeah we have other players at his position

but he has the talent of a starter. and he’ll be a great 6th man off the bench. (come to think of it we have atleast 4 6th men) haha

awesome!

Glad hes back. Hopefully it works out long term and we can keep this guy in the fold. Loved him before for his toughness and D.

by chanter on Sep 1, 2010 2:47 PM EDT reply actions

Gotta think

That by the time the regular season starts that either Wafer or West will be history. My guess is it will be Wafer. As long as Delonte’s head is into b-ball, he’s the much better player.

by nickagneta on Sep 1, 2010 2:48 PM EDT reply actions

when does Wafer's contract become fully guaranteed?

I know he’s only guaranteed $150k of it, so I would assume that at some point (November/December), the rest would become guaranteed?

Need to remember that Delonte’s got to sit out for ten games. Unless someone (SF) really good gets let loose in camp, I bet both will leave camp on the team… but if I were Wafer, I’d be making sure my apartment was on a month-to-month lease, you know?

by theBird on Sep 1, 2010 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Dont see why Von Wafer can’t be the backup to PP and Delonte as Rays backup. He’s actually a bit taller than Tony Allen is and Tony was defending Lebron. Wafer is baller and not injury prone as it Daniels.

by chanter on Sep 1, 2010 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Von's never been known as a defender...

… and I’d wager that Tony’s got a bigger wingspan. Tony’s one of the few guys in the league that’s ~6’4" that can match up against LeBron, which is why losing him was such a pisser.

by theBird on Sep 1, 2010 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Tony was never known as a defender either prior to this last year. Remember when they were trying to trade him a few years ago and Doc repeatedly said that Tony was not a good defender killing his trade value? Von is certainly quick enough laterally to be a solid defender. I’ll be interested to see if Von does back up Pierce. Great roster though as it stands.

by chanter on Sep 1, 2010 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

WHAT?

Tony’s ALWAYS been known as a good defensive player. He might have been apt to take more chances in previous years, but if Tony didn’t have his D, he would have been out of the league years ago. Sorry, man, you’re just wrong.

As to Wafer, we’ll see. Haven’t watched him enough to make final conclusions, but so far in his career that quickness hasn’t translated into good D.

by theBird on Sep 1, 2010 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Wao what that's mean?

Are we gonna trade Rondo for Carmelo??

by celt4ever on Sep 1, 2010 2:49 PM EDT reply actions

But most likely:
None of the above.

Great Pickup!

It’s nice to see Delonte back in Green. I think his game has matured quite a bit since we last saw him but let’s just hope he has matured himself. He’s a little unstable and possibly bi-polar but I think being around so many great veterans will help keep him in check. I hope….

I think Ray Allen better keep his Mom away from Delonte if those rumors about him hooking up with LeBron’s mom are true. Ray’s mom is definitely a lot hotter than LeBron’s so you know Delonte will be all over that! HA HA.

Delonte, check!

I’m psyched about this, but I hope he can keep his act together and continue to get help for his off-court issues. I really loved this guy way back when, and the idea of him reuniting with the Cs is fantastic.

Plus, the home opener against MIA will be that much more interesting with Lebron’s Daddy in the rotation!

Next on my wish list: Gomes and Powe!

by Hal Jordan on Sep 1, 2010 3:35 PM EDT reply actions

No Rudy on your list?

We can still get him in a trade, you know…..I mean, Wafer and West will BOTH be on non-guaranteed contracts. Or, a player could be traded for Rudy if Danny could pull it off. : )

Quotes from Danny
“Delonte has been one of my favorite players that I enjoyed watching in my time here with the Celtics,” Ainge told the Globe. “He is a competitor and we’re all aware (of his issues) and we’ve done a lot of checks and had a lot of conversation with Delonte and his people and we obviously have a long history with Delonte also and we think he can help us win.”

The Celtics already have 14 guaranteed contracts and it’s unlikely they would add a 15th with West, who received $500,000 from a buyout from the Minnesota Timberwolves, who acquired him in July from Cleveland. West is expected to sign a make-good contract that would be guaranteed if he remains on the roster by January.

“It was difficult when we traded Delonte,” Ainge said. “It wasn’t easy. We liked him. He was well-received by our fans, by our coaches and well-received by our teammates because he’s a guy who gives all he’s got every night. Delonte’s had some challenges off the court and I feel that right now that some of those challenges have given him some pretty serious wake-up calls. I think he’s actually in a better place today than when he left us a few years ago.”

The physical ability to defend the 3? Yes. Or, at least the jury is out.

Harangody was an average defender at best at the NCAA level against PFs...

I don’t think he’s got the foot speed to keep up with 3s at this level. The league has changed a lot since Larry played, even if they’re roughly the same athleticism (which I don’t think I’d agree with).

LAME move...hope he gets cut....

I thought we needed a wing defender who could shoot? He’s going to take minutes from Bradley and I’d rather see Bradley get the opportunity. When are the Cs going to develop their draft picks and look somewhat to the future? Otherwise, what’s the point of drafting anyone? This guy is a thug and needes therapy. Lame move DA. Go Cs…

by jimmyscs on Sep 1, 2010 3:52 PM EDT reply actions

I assume you were not a celts fan until 08

It’s hard to imagine a celts fan who watched delonte playing here with heart and soul complaining about getting him back for a nonguaranteed contract.

If he doesn’t have the off court issues he would be a 3mil player and could start for a lesser team. You don’t look strictly at a players position and say hey we are looking to get a wing and no other options will be considered. It’s all about talent, trade value and taking risk. Bradley will either be developed more as a pg or sent to see more court time with Austin. Whoever contributes more will see more time here and I don’t know why that will be a problem.

by friedgreentomatoes on Sep 1, 2010 4:39 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Your first paragraph says it all

Honestly, he’s arguably less of a risk than Shaq. Shaq’s contract, however minimal it is, is guaranteed; Delonte’s is not.

by Tai on Sep 1, 2010 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I do not like the pick up

since he doesn’t address the wing issue. But I agree that for a non-guaranteed contract, it’s a low risk, high reward situation. He’s a career 10 point plus scorer afterall. Agree on whoever contributes more will see more playing time, rookie or not because there aren’t too many of them available with this lineup.

by leonitus on Sep 1, 2010 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions

if this was a situation in which we have to choose either delonte or another solid wing player

then i might not prefer him back. However, Signing west is NOT against the idea of adding a good wing player. With the salary already over the cap it is just very hard to find a solid player with only the vet minimum available no matter whatever position ones talking about. In short, if ainge fails to add a solid backup for pp at the end, it wouldn’t be because of signing delonte. Instead, it might be a good relief.

I am sure once ainge sees a solid wing player who will help this team more become available, he will not hesitate a second to cut someone off the roster to get the needed spot. Surely, adding west doesn’t solve the need of a backup 3, but it is a move that will at least more or less improve this team, yet at very low risk/expense. Other teams might worry about his off court problems but we dealt with him well and have a very strong lockroom that can hardly be distracted. I’d call it a no-lose situation.

by friedgreentomatoes on Sep 1, 2010 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Bottom Line:

Delonte is an upgrade over Tony Allen. Net Net we are a better team, certainly on the offensive end, and I would submit at least as good on the defensive side.

right on Roy

like stated above of course they had talks with Delonte about all the issues i think were a good fit for him, add delonte to the list of the current Celtics that have something to prove. we are going to be playing every night with a chip on our shoulder and i love it!!!

by j804 on Sep 1, 2010 3:52 PM EDT reply actions

I used to like Delonte . .. .

but now I get the sense that he’s just crazy and not what we need.

by Fred Roberts on Sep 1, 2010 3:59 PM EDT reply actions

Yes I am so happy !!!

I think signing him especially if it was for a minimum contract was a steal !

Delonte can shoot – handle the ball and play good strong defense.

Danny had a pretty good off season considering he signed vets like Delonte, Shaq, Jermaine.

Drafting Bradley and signing Wafer were not bad moves either.

The roster is all set for now but I still would like the C’s to try to trade Daniels for a more talented small forward to back up Pierce…one that can preferably score and defend better then Daniels.

If they can make such a trade in the pre season or at the trade deadline,
add Rasheed to the roster in the spring.
get Perk back healthy,
and stay healthy overall as a team they will have another good shot at getting banner 18.

Guaranteed vs. non guaranteed contracts

Can somebody please explain the difference and what impact they have on the makeup of the team. I am too lazy to look it up right now as the little one is about to wake from her nap.

What I’m most interested in I guess is there any impact on having players with nonguranteed contracts on your active 12 man roster, at what point do they turn into guaranteed contracts and what is the effect on the team’s salary cap?

Thanks for the help.

all in all I like the move

Delonte was one of my favorites when he was here. He hustles all the time and he is a fierce competitor. He gives us another 3 point shooter which we desperately need and which we were missing last year. Him and Rondo in the backcourt or him and Nate could be a seriously fun backcourt to watch

I'm still wondering what kind of team the Cavs will field this season...

…it’s almost as if the Cavaliers’ franchise is bailing out other playoff-level teams with their garage-sale this summer. First LeBron, then Big Z, then Shaq, and now Delonte West?!?!

Their remaining players should have opened up a lemonade stand/car wash the day after LeBron’s ‘Decision’ aired. Heck, at least they’d be saving their franchise a little money by doing so; apparently LeBron’s departure from the Cavs depreciates the franchise’s value by 250 million dollars. Cha-ching!! _

by Witch-King on Sep 1, 2010 6:05 PM EDT reply actions

Love it...

Watching Delonte in a Cleveland uniform was as jarring to me as it will be to see Shaq in green. Welcome back home!

by GreenInNYC on Sep 1, 2010 6:12 PM EDT reply actions

Good move, and here's why:

I think this takes the pressure off needing a high-scoring wing — thus, it makes Marquis Daniels a more natural sub for Pierce. A backcourt of Nate Robinson and Delonte West — both essentially combo guards who can play decent defense — gives us solid outside firepower off the bench so that Daniels can focus on slashing on offensive and being a stopper on defense. Throw in Big Baby and Shaq and you’ve got a pretty good back-up 5, although the interior defense/rebounding could remain a concern. But I like our bench more and more. It’s the health/athleticism of the starting 5 I’m more concerned about.

by Big_Easy on Sep 1, 2010 7:25 PM EDT reply actions

Good point.

about how Delonte should help out Daniels. We just got to hope Daniels can stay healthy.

Ok Danny your assist to turnover ratio is still high over the off season but this is a turnover! I dont get it at all! We had youth at this spot – da more bradley plays da better for him. Nate resigned right! We had cover at the guard spot. We really needed to add a SF. If anything happens Pierce we are goosed. Was hoping to be able to rest him alot this year till playoffs. We seen how worn down he was guarding lebron this year and thats with Tonys help! Daniels – come on! The best available player to suit our needs out there this summer was Barnes and da enemy landed him. Im gutted by this news. Was hoping for a wilson chandlier maybe a posey trade. But this makes no sense. Oh did we not just give even more motivation to the best player in da league!!!! not good danny
