Clifford Ray Leaving The Celtics

Twitter / Julian Benbow:

Word is that Clifford Ray won't be back on the Celtics bench this coming season.

No word yet on why he won't be back but I'll miss him.  Not that I had any personal dealings with him or anything, but I liked the mental image of him barking orders at the C's big men and the story about how he once saved a dolphin.

That sucks

He did well on the center position. Gonna be miss

by CBleedsGreeN on Sep 9, 2010 5:30 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

is it possible to

suck and blow at the same time?
because that’s what this is –
perk, shaq, jermaine –
…they all would’ve been better with him behind the bench

Don't fake the funk on a nasty dunk

sad

I was hoping he’d be very helpful for Semih’s development.

Hate to see clifford go

this is a major bummer. All the best big guy!!

Believe in 18.

Bummer, much luck on your future choices

The dolphin story was nice

how much will it take to hire Hakeem the dream, or even ewing?

by Warrior Spirit on Sep 9, 2010 5:54 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

This was more of a joke than anything, dont get me wrong i would take Olijawon in a heartbeat to have a hand at perk, baby, gody, but not likely. And screw ewing tho he may be avail and is most likely a better match for perk due to style of play. I would rather have parish and his confident, slow motion, strong silent killer type tutoring the youngans. Besides maybe perk learned all he can from clifford, plus shaq can show him a thing or 2.

ug

Thibs now Clifford. One of the best big man coaches. That blows.

That sucks

That really sucks…… Who is going to replace him now?? He’s one of the best Big Man coach…… Celtics lost 2 great Coaches (Tom Thibodeau and Cliffard Ray)

by greenbri9 on Sep 9, 2010 6:10 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Okay, so next year Doc steps down.

Can’t you just see it: McHale back as head coach, Parish for the big men—and Larry takes Danny’s spot when Danny steps down as well. The new old Big Three.

by clover on Sep 10, 2010 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions

I could think of far worse things to happen than that!

Right now, though – I am very bummed about losing Clifford.

by mmmmm on Sep 10, 2010 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Disappointing

Here did a great job developing Al Jeff and Perk. Erden could use his help no doubt. Oh well, all good things must end.

Awww man. This sucks.

Cliff is awesome.

I specializes in grammar fail.

by a tommy point on Sep 9, 2010 6:28 PM EDT reply actions

Crud.

Ray seemed to have the perfect demeanor for a big man coach.

Wait, he reached down the dolphin's throat??!!!

Can Lawrence Frank do that?

Thats the last straw...

now whos gonna replace him KG? Wallace?

by Papatrichs on Sep 9, 2010 7:04 PM EDT reply actions

where he's headed...

 don’t tell me Orlan…. NOH!

Danny and Doc have Other Ideas

I am sure they were have already communicated with Robert Parish to join the staff. Perk last year did not improve over the previous year and in fact he actually regressed!

by Bastone on Sep 9, 2010 7:08 PM EDT reply actions

That's a good one dude

Robert parish sounds good. But does he even talk. Jk! The dude is one of the 50 greatest. I hope he gets on board.

by CBleedsGreeN on Sep 9, 2010 7:29 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Parish

Clifford Ray mentored Robert Parish with the GSW way back when. The C’s just got the dividends of Clifford Ray’s hard work.

by BleedinGreen417 on Sep 9, 2010 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Parish has actually been very vocal in his support of perk this year

Several interviews with a bald chief, with him givin love to throwback perk and the celts

by Warrior Spirit on Sep 10, 2010 12:15 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

In fact he has also been praising shaq and pierce as the best the celtics ever had, better than hondo or bird

by Warrior Spirit on Sep 10, 2010 12:31 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

stinks

any word on possible replacements?

"Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

im gonna be all up on you like a spider monkey!

i can just see delonte west winning a game of poker against lebron, throwing down the cards he yells, "who's your daddy!"...."oh, sorry man"

by remembering9ergods on Sep 9, 2010 7:13 PM EDT reply actions

Why do we need him?

I’m a big fan of Clifford Ray. I credit him for Perkins and Jefferson’s emergence as well as Powe and BBD. But when you keep acquiring older veteran big men why do you need a big man coach. My guess is that he knows he can’t teach anything to Garnett or the O’Neals and will be stuck trying to work with Erden and Gody but they will never see the floor. I still think the past couple of years we should have been picking up big man prospects for him to develop (O’Bryant was a disaster though but that wasn’t his fault).

He’s probably heading to a team with some young big men with potential.

by kagry on Sep 9, 2010 7:30 PM EDT reply actions

True...

on a team with so many veteran big men a big man coach like Ray is not as important as would be the case if we were a team made up of younger big men…still sad to see him go though.

by fordescort on Sep 10, 2010 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m in agreement with everyone’s (well almost everyone) comments already.

This sucks. But good luck to Clifford in getting another job. Which I’m sure it won’t be hard for him to find one (if he wants of course).

i remember clifford… great jazz song and a great coach.

by nazzbo on Sep 9, 2010 11:01 PM EDT reply actions

I'd like to see him...

go to the Jazz and make something great out of Big Al.

by Raef on Sep 10, 2010 9:12 AM EDT reply actions

Terrible news.

One of the best Big Men coaches out there, and he’s done wonders for Perks development.

Danny should put in a call to Bill Walton.

by Sizzlack on Sep 10, 2010 9:25 AM EDT reply actions

Robert Parish would make a great replacement. He and Clifford Ray run a big man’s camp together in Bradenton FL each summer.

Perk is a BEAST!!

by FLCeltsFan on Sep 10, 2010 2:35 PM EDT reply actions

This sucks. This blows. Clifford Ray was easily one of the top 2-3 big men coaches in the game.

I know we are all a-buzzin’ about bringing in The Chief (and I personally would be all for that!) – but has anybody heard anything remotely official about who Danny and Doc will be bringing in?

This is a pretty huge blow. We lose a lot of continuity with both Thibs and Cliff gone.

And while it is true that vets like Shaq and JO are experienced enough that they probably don’t need a lot of coaching on personal technique, there is a lot to playing the position as a team that they will be needing to work on. And BBD, Erden and Harangody all are going to need a lot more coaching.

by mmmmm on Sep 10, 2010 4:51 PM EDT reply actions

I'd like to caption that photo...

“I don’t care if you are “Starbury!” I will knock those tattoos right off of you…"

I think this probably has more to do with the C’s now having more vet big men. Back when Ray was hired Perk, Al and later Davis were very raw. Now they have a much more experienced front line. Best of luck, Coach Ray.

next coach

and I thought Scal was the next coach with the 30 minute special to let it out of the bag!
