"Stephen A. Smith joined the show to talk about the NBA and the latest trade rumors. ...

Smith said that the Celtics counter the Heat's athleticism with "brute size" and Rasheed Wallace will come out of retirement to come back to the Celtics.

Smith said Wallace told him that's the plan, because he wants another shot at the Lakers in the NBA Finals."

Huh. Surprising comment considering how fragile & foul prone our front court is.

After witnessing the officiating we received on national tv Christmas day, I’m convinced we need all front court fouls we can get.
In the playoffs against any team from Florida we gotta go 8 vs 5, so those extra fouls will be a necessity to keep Wade/LBJ out the lane as well as defend DH one on one.

And honestly, what are the odds that Perk, Shaq & JO get through April, May & June healthy?
We’re lucky any time 2 of the 3 dress really…

by Walshdollar on Jan 11, 2011 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry AT-360, but you've misunderstood the meaning of that phrase.

Sizzlack was exaggerating the expression, “taking something with a grain of salt.” What that saying means is that one is accepting some thought as being possibly valid or truthful, but with a significant degree of skepticism. When Sizzlack said he viewed Stephen Smith’s report with a particularly large amount of salt, he was indicating he extremely doubted its validity.

terrible news

Were overloaded at the 4 and 5. Whats the point of this?

"It's my experience, no experience is a bad one."

by ndemers07 on Jan 11, 2011 11:57 AM EST reply actions

Kg, baby at the 4, shaq, perk, jo ans semih at the 5

And harangody. But harangody, bradley and semih wont see the court during the playoffs.

We have 7 bigs if u count gody who is the size of a 3, so 7 out of 15 roster spots, and 2 of them wont see court time at all during the playoffs and out of the remaining 5 bigs, 4 will have missed significant time this season. With perk coming back from serious injury, and a hitch in his stride, no one can know just how effective he will be. Shaq and JO both battling injury, neither known for playing thru pain. How effective has either of them been recently? Logically speaking, we should expect all 3 to be at their best come playoff time, but you never know.
What if perk is 70% a la KG last year, what if JO goes down again or plays like he did in last years playoffs.
Resigning sheed is a fantastic insurance policy, and if he plays the way Danny/Doc want him to, he could actually be the most rested and effective 5 we have come playoff time, you never know.
And if he is motivated…
No one contends with our depth, deepest rotation ever in fact.

by ndemers07 on Jan 11, 2011 12:09 PM EST up reply actions

No way do they cut Semih

He’s shown too much and they like him too much for the future. Young, athletic 7 footer with basketball smarts – Doc & Danny will not let him go easily.

Wafer or Nate or Delonte are probably the most expendible from a contract and team development standpoint, if you want to add Sheed.

Of those, a healthy Delonte’ would be the most important to keep if you ask me, for the short-term goal of a championship this year. A month ago I might have said to drop Wafer over Nate, but lately … not so sure.

by mmmmm on Jan 11, 2011 1:20 PM EST up reply actions

To bring Rasheed on board, I'd cut Wafer or Nate. Not Semih.

Wafer isn’t going to go to another NBA team.

Of course that’s assuming Delonte will come back in good shape (in every sense).

by no kidding on Jan 11, 2011 7:03 PM EST up reply actions

Even with the added size we have this year

we are still getting out-rebounded. I mean, when perk and kg come back we can see how well we are rebounding. But im all for bringing sheed back.

The only discouraging thing about this game to me was that Boston was without KG and Perk. Having those two guys back would make them so much stronger, that I am not sure we can win against them.

by letsgoblue86 on Jan 11, 2011 12:04 PM EST reply actions

Sheed doesn't help any rebounding problems...

Like, even a little bit.

"Phil is obviously a good coach. You don't win that many games without being a damn good coach, ... Remember one thing: He's been very fortunate. He picks his spots. That's all I can say." - Red Auerbach

by Sizzlack on Jan 11, 2011 12:22 PM EST up reply actions

Sheed rebounds WAY better than Davis.

Even in his last year, Sheed was a consistent 19% defensive rebounder and the prior 2 years was always in the 20s.

This is Davis’ best rebounding year ever and his DRB% is just 16%. His career DRB% is just 13.8%.

That difference is WAY more than just ‘a little bit’.

by mmmmm on Jan 11, 2011 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

Sheed doesn't play Power forward.

So not sure why we’re comparing Davis’s stats…

by Sizzlack on Jan 11, 2011 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

Or too re-phrase...

Shouldn’t play PF.

"Phil is obviously a good coach. You don't win that many games without being a damn good coach, ... Remember one thing: He's been very fortunate. He picks his spots. That's all I can say." - Red Auerbach

by Sizzlack on Jan 11, 2011 2:01 PM EST up reply actions

That may be your opinion.

And that’s fair.

But he DID play PF – quite often. And he WAS a better rebounder than Davis.

All moot – I don’t believe he’s coming out of retirement.

by mmmmm on Jan 11, 2011 2:24 PM EST up reply actions

Agree 1000000%

Rasheed is built to guard Gasol !

by fordescort on Jan 11, 2011 10:37 PM EST up reply actions

The reason one would compare Davis' stats

Is because :
1) letsgoblue86 noted that we are getting out-rebounded and advocated for Sheed to address that.
2) you stated that Sheed would not help address that.
3) Currently our big man minutes are dominated by BBD, who is a much poorer rebounder than Sheed.
4) If you replace minutes from BBD with minutes from Sheed, your rebounding should improve.

All moot. I doubt Sheed is coming out of retirement.

by mmmmm on Jan 11, 2011 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

At this point he’d only get the prorated vet. minimum, so I don’t think it’s the dough. I agree about the fat part though. Sheed is really going to be in shape in March or April just out of the blue? …not likely…

I laughed at loud at that thought…

and I’ve been a Wallace fan (of sorts) over the years. As my grandmother would say. ‘Lord have mercy!’

Still, we have been having such a tough time getting and keeping our bigs healthy that….

if he was truly in great shape, I’d consider it. Hard to believe that is true though. What a crazy season and team personnel-wise.

by Tom Halzack on Jan 12, 2011 12:42 AM EST up reply actions

Good News

This is a great move designed for the post season only. Perk will not be 100% and Shaq and JO will never be fully healthy. It gives us a great combo of bigs and shooters. There is no team in the East that could match our size. Miami? Z , Dampier and Anthony cannot match up. Orlando? Howard and who else? He would be in constant foul trouble because we can throw 4 bigs at him all game. Bulls? Noah and Boozer with Noah not likely 100%. Then if we meet the Lakers, we will solve last years problem. The 12 man playoff roster would look like this:

Rondo/West
Allen/Nate
Shaq/Perk/JO/Wallace
KG/Davis
Pierce/Daniels

Wafer is the odd man out, which is fine since we have Nate, Delonte and Daniels filling the roles he would fill. No team can match that in a 7 game series.

by JPV on Jan 11, 2011 12:09 PM EST reply actions

Debatable.

He was ok, and had a decent Game 7, nothing spectacular as far am I’m concerned. And he couldn’t stay on the court cause of his back… which when you’re out of shape those things happen.

back problems are not necessarily a reflection of being 'in shape' or not.

I’ve had back problems since I was a teen ager and most of my life I’ve been in pretty good shape. I’ve run a marathon, finished in the top 10% of every distance race I’ve ever entered &competed in numerous martial arts tournaments.

Doesn’t matter how good of shape you are in. Back spasms can occur almost randomly. When your back spasms, it sucks sucks sucks. Numerous pro athletes have chronic back problems. J.D. Drew – who whether you like him or not is a phenomenal athlete – has a history of back problems. Randy Moss & Jeannie Longo (cyclist) are just a couple more who pop into mind.

by mmmmm on Jan 11, 2011 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

Agree 100% mmbaby.

You bring up a good point of how Sheed mental and physical toughness effects other teams especially on defense.

Sheed plays a very physical low post power defense and knows how to get in players heads .

The best proof of that was how he perplexed and frustrated Howard and especially Gasol in the playoffs last year and threw them off of there games.

Having Rasheed provide that type of intimidation factor coming off the bench, especially come playoff time when the game becomes a more physical 1/2 court power game …would be a bonus for sure.

by fordescort on Jan 11, 2011 10:36 PM EST up reply actions

I'm pretty sure thats the plan...

Avery will be sent D-League packing and Rasheed will re-sign. Semih is getting no run, Shaq has fouling issues, we aren’t sure about Perk’s abilities yet, Baby is under-sized and trigger happy, and J.O. is simply not 100% healthy. We could use another big.

by Rtpas11 on Jan 11, 2011 12:20 PM EST reply actions

Except the NBA roster rules don’t work this way.

by kozlodoev on Jan 11, 2011 12:21 PM EST up reply actions

that doesn't work

Sending a guy under contract to the d-league doesn’t open a roster spot. C’s just sewed up the roster by guaranteeing Wafer and West. I guess it would not be hard to trade one of the rookies or Wafer to a team with cap space or a trade exception, but it seems a long shot to me at this point.

by Berkcelt on Jan 11, 2011 12:23 PM EST up reply actions

Read other comments before you post please.

This has already been mentioned, and as koz above me says, it doesn’t work that way. You have to cut a contract to sign another player, can’t just send someone to the D-league to open a spot.

Too much of a logjam.

There’s already 4 Centers on roster, and I wouldn’t give up what Wafer, and the future potential of Bradley can bring to this team for Sheed. Who was, god awful for most of the season last year, and had one, semi reasonable game in Game 7. Where really, if you think about it… he wasn’t all that good, still couldn’t rebound, and we only glorify it because he was so bad for so long, that it made his performance seem that much better.

agree to disagree

Don’t forget Sheed’s post defense during last year’s playoffs. Very handy to have if JO takes himself out of games. How many times has he done that this year?

by vgarcia890 on Jan 11, 2011 1:21 PM EST up reply actions

JOs post defense is equally as good.

If not better than Sheed, at least over their careers. JO has always been a very good interior defender. Foul trouble is always an issue for big men, not much can be done about that. But with 3 Centers playing regular minutes, that shouldn’t be an issue.

The idea is so crazy ...

… it just might work, but ONLY if Sheed were in shape at the time. P.J. Brown helped out after joining us midseason.
I highly doubt Sheed will be in shape enough to help us. It may well be Steven A. Smith helping out a friend. We’ll see.
But with so many injured/old big men, what’s another one gonna hurt? (Or help! LOL.)

by Big_Easy on Jan 11, 2011 12:55 PM EST reply actions

What good is..

‘brute size’ when it is parked out on the 3 point line?

I saw Sheed on a flight to Detroit a couple months ago (Row 1, Seat A) and as I walked by I asked him “Big fella, are you coming back?” “Count on it” he said, and put his headphones back on.

by Siggy on Jan 11, 2011 1:06 PM EST reply actions

Sheed can shoot the 3

and I’d rather see Sheed waiting out on the 3 point line than Baby.

This only happens if Davis is traded to get a wing, and it doesnt seem to make a lot of sense right now… or with Semih being sent in a package, so the C’s would need a 4th center.

I can’t see it happening

Too much of a log jam at the 5 (and perhaps 4). As cold blooded as it sounds, this only happens if either Perk or Davis is traded, and probably for a a backup wing, like aporel said.

Would like to see Rasheed make a comeback....

With the past health issues all our current bigs KG, Perk, J.O Shaq and Erden have the C’s could use the big man insurance Rasheed could provide.
This insurance would be even more vital come playoff time.

The other bonus of signing Rasheed is since he has a great history of playing Howard, Bynum and Gasol well defensively he would be nice to have on the bench to throw at them in case injury or even foul trouble strike any of the C’s current bigs in the playoffs.

So for the above reasons I think Rasheed pulling a P.G. Brown makes alot of sense.
