Trade deadline approaching - any possibilities for a potential trade?

Now that Von Wafer and Delonte Wests contracts are guaranteed to the end of the year, it's possible to begin the game of- what if?

Star-divide

What if Jermaine O'Neals knee problems turn out to be so bad that he won't be able to continue to play, [ by the time  K.Perkins returns to the line up, it'll be too late to trade JO ]  will it be better to try to trade him as a potential expiring contract, along with say, Von Wafer, in order to try to pick up a solid defensive small forward in order to back up P.Pierce [ which we could still use, as one never knows if and when M.Daniels will hit the injured list- hopefully not ] ?

What if JO can continue to play, but only sporadically [ as has been the case until now ] and since he has a 2 year contract, will it be better to trade him, along with, again, Von Wafer and a draft pick or two for a defensive small forward ?

What if a decent small forward becomes available, which is quite likely to happen, given the condition and position  of some of the teams today, who can we use as trade bait besides the aforementioned? M.Daniels is a possibility as well, and combining him with JO might bring us an upgrade to Daniels, even though Daniels has been giving us fairly decent minutes as of late.

What if Ainge decides to go with the team as it stands now, and the injury bug that has plagued us from the beginning of the year continues, then won't we have a solid chorus of what ifs as the season progresses?

 Any thoughts on the subject?

Well, coming up with possible trades

….seems like a waste of time, since we on the outside have NO idea of what’s actually possible or not. I think it basically boils down to Danny looking at what’s out there, what’s possible/offered, and deciding in each case whether a deal makes sense or not. I think all of these guys could CERTAINLY be traded:
Avery
Semih
Luke
Wafer

…and these 3 guys COULD also be traded, just not quite so easily:
JO
BBD
Nate

Any combination of these names is possible, and might happen, depending on factors we cannot know now. And that pretty much sums up my interest in the matter, until we see some actual trade proposals floating by.

by DRJ1 on Jan 9, 2011 3:53 AM EST reply actions

when you say "could"

are you talking about contract status? Trade value? What?

BBD, by virtue of his expiring contract (AND the fact that he has decent current value as a player) is probably the easiest of all those names to trade.

by mmmmm on Jan 10, 2011 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

Good pt. I know v little about contract status

…because I’ve never bothered to look it up for any of these guys. I meant that list only in terms of their importance to the team. That’s the (only) criterion I used to break them up into 2 groups.

This is an area I have purposely spent v little time on. I know a lot of fans get deep into this… it’s part of fanhood, I guess. But… and this is the real point of my comment… I’ve always considered all that a waste of time, because it just seems that all our suggestions, possibilities, and crystal-ball-gazing comes to nothing every time. That’s because we have so LITTLE decent info to use (or at least that’s how it seems to me). Only after the GMs have their conversations, and proposals are announced, does it make any sense to start analyzing trades.

Again, this is STRICTLY my pov. I understand that a lot of other fans feel the opposite away about it.

by DRJ1 on Jan 10, 2011 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

I agree that it is usually a waste of time

but, really, talking about trades based on ‘importance to team’ without considering contracts is even more of a waste of time.

Instead of talking about trading any of these guys, you could have instead simply posted a list of “These are the players I consider least important to the team.” and leave it at that.

And fwiw, Avery Bradley may not be that important to the team’s chances of winning right now, but down the road he is probably more ‘important to the team’ than any of those other names.

So you probably should be very clear about what you mean by ‘importance to the team’ as well.

by mmmmm on Jan 10, 2011 5:03 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, prob right there too

….You can tell how little I care about all the trade yappin out there now.

….But that’s a pretty big “probably” there, about Avery. He’s at a place now where I can’t see the odds as any better than 50-50 — and my estimate would be a lot lower than that — for him to become THAT important to this team. Offensively, he’s a train wreck… and when I looked up the numbers for his 1 year in college, they weren’t terrific either.

I find it strange that Doc keeps throwing him into the lion’s den as a PG. Doc must know his severe limitations on O… why not put him in as a 2, let him relax a little out there a little, hopefully get some confidence going by NOT screwing up, for a change?

by DRJ1 on Jan 10, 2011 5:23 PM EST up reply actions

Bradley may be in the lion's den but he's growing..

@ DRJ1, I want to point out to you that Bradley was the #1 player in America as a PG in high school. Rick Barnes put him at the 2 last year and it wasn’t as smooth of a transition as neither parties had hoped, thus, resulting in the less than steller stats from Avery. Danny Ainge discussed this on draft night and said he thought Bradley had a lot of potential. In fact, he was much higher on the Celtics draft boards than most thought he’d be.

I guess the point of my post is that I like that Doc is putting Bradley at PG. Bradley may have some added pressure carrying the ball more but what better time to learn than now? I mean, would you rather have him getting some burn now during the pre all-star break lul, or during crunch time in April with playoff seeding on the line? Also, I’m sure the Celtics like seeing him play real time in order to better gauge his player value and possibly grow his trade value.

It's meant as fantasy, as in what if.....?

Obviously, until some of the teams actually begin to talk trade, we won’t know who or what will be out there.
This is more of a wish list question, as to who we would like to see from other teams. We know who it would be possible to let go.
The reality will only begin to take place heading into the week or so before the trade deadline, when reality will begin to take shape.

Trade Baby

Get something for BBD and, perhaps something for JO. I LIKE JO’s play, it’s just a question of his health that brings up the trade idea. While JO LOOKS slow, lazy and like he doesn’t care, his results are far different. He’s rebounding, blocking shots and picking up loose guys lost by the other defenders. That’s what got him in the foul trouble last night. Doc certainly knows capabilities, and if JO wasn’t doing the job, Erdan would be playing instead. BBD was so outclassed last night by Boozer, it was almost ludricous. I could have lived with the lousy defense, giving Boozer the credit for his great offense, but Baby’s insistance on attempting to score from the post (and totally failing) was the main reason we lost the game. (Not only was he missing the shots, it took him out of rebound range).

by Dipper on Jan 9, 2011 6:20 AM EST reply actions

JO is probably not going to be traded.

Especially if there are doubts about his health.

He would have more value as an expiring next year.

trades

I think BBD is the main trade chip. Ainge probably isn’t hesitant to move him but would he get proper value back?

They didn't announce that until Jan 10

…and this was posted a day earlier.

Interestingly, it happened in practice. And he wasn’t doing anything unusual, just running normally. WAM… he’s out for the season, and the hapless Cavs get even more hapless. Some Clevelander, as some point in time, must have angered the bb gods something fierce.

It was not that long ago

that we lost Paul Pierce & (a then productive) Tony Allen and the whole Celtic’s season of 2006-2007 dove quickly into the depths of darkness …. and lottery pick.

I have empathy for Cleveland, though not a lot of sympathy.

What a difference a day makes... as the song goes.

Today’s fantasy can become reality in a very short time.

Consider the massive trade looming now in order to satisfy C. Anthony’s desire to escape from Denver.

Just today we found out that Varejao, who was high on some wish lists here, will be out for the season with a torn ankle tendon.

Lakers Matt Barnes is having surgery to repair torn knee cartilage, and will be out for several weeks, at least. [ Think of Jermaine O’Neal with gimpy knees and hope they don’t get worse ].

A number of other injuries have been sprouting up lately with various teams, which shows that we’re not the only ones with walking wounded, although we’ve had more than our fair share, and in spite of that, we have looked pretty impressive over the 1st 1/3 of the season.

It’ll be interesting to see what begins to unfold during the next month or so, with I would imagine, a lot of telephone wires being burned up with a lot of GMs talking trade.

What we might wish for now, could easily be gone in a trade, with one or more teams in the coming weeks. Interesting times ahead.

My wish is to have a solid defensive stopper who can give P.Pierce some rest at the three- someone who can defend L.James, e.g.

With some key players returning from injuries, and staying healthy, I think that would be our priority, as all the other positions are adequately covered.

Big Baby and Wafer plus Bradley

Garcia and Thompson would be worth a trade for …..

JO for Al Harrington

Denver wants to dump him in their Mega-Melo deal. With a lockout and JO talking retirement, Denver may love the idea of his short contract compared to Harrington’s five year deal.
