Orlando Magic Player Evaluations: Brandon Bass
Hi, Celtics fans. Evan Dunlap from Orlando Pinstriped Post, SB Nation's Magic blog, here to share my evaluation of Brandon Bass' 2010/11 season. I hope you find it detailed and helpful.
My take is Bass is gonna do quite well in Boston, and it wouldn't surprise me to see him become a fan favorite. Dude really busts his tail on the court, and is very skilled.

A short
bad rebounding mediocre jump shooter who is a bad defender.

Man, you're wrong
Very good midrange jumpshooter, average rebounder (though he was better in his first couple years), and average, or just below, defender. But it’s the first of these that makes the real difference, since we know that almost anyone who tries can thrive in the Cs defensive system. He’ll be fine on that end.

Sounds similar to BBD with one exception
They both don’t do much on offense but take midrange jumpers, average to below rebounders, shot blockers and defenders. The big difference is that Bass makes far more of those shots than Baby, so on that alone it is an upgrade. Not to mention the cap flexibility and salary difference. A real no brainer of a trade by Danny.
Two differences.
1) As you mentioned, the ability to MAKE the mid-range jump shot.
2) The ability to run and dunk on the break.
Defensively, they are probably a wash. Different strengths and weaknesses, but overall a wash.
But offensively, Bass looks much more attractive to me, especially for this offense.

Baby had burned all his bridges
lateral trade
I know why Celtics wanted Baby out of town
why did Orlando think Baby would be an upgrade? Why not clutching to Bass?
My guess is that Bass will be a hustle guy, without Baby’s wide body, but without Baby’s high maintenance
shot locations
In Evan’s article, he references an earlier article for which he took a lot of heat because he worried about how if you took away Bass’ mid-range jump shots, his shooting percentage would drop from (at the time) 53.2% to ‘just’ 50%.
Reading the thread there seemed to be a lot of back and forth but not much resolution of what that actually meant.
Here are Bass’ shot location numbers for last year:
Location M A FG% League Avg
At Rim 135 203 66.5 64.1
3-9 ft 24 66 36.4 39.0
10-15 ft 56 126 44.4 39.3
16-23 ft 116 247 47.0 39.4
3PT 0 2
What I see there is a guy who smartly takes the vast, vast majority of his shots only from ranges where he is well above average.
Those numbers also show that he isn’t just a jump shooter, since he’s got a decent share of his shots at the rim. His 66.5% rate at the rim is typical for PFs so he can finish there.
Here are BBD’s numbers for last year:
Location M A FG% League Avg
At Rim 152 241 63.1 64.1
3-9 ft 41 103 39.8 39.0
10-15 ft 38 87 43.7 39.3
16-23 ft 126 355 35.0 39.4
3PT 2 15
What I see there is 108 more missed shots from 16-23 feet that should NOT have been taken. The opposing defense almost certainly grabbed around 75 of those. That’s like an extra turnover per game.
I am more than happy to try out Mr. Bass instead.

interesting
but without seeing Magic games, it is hard to tell
I can imagine a world where opposing teams sag on DH, and leave Bass wide open
an easier shot than the clock winding down and the ball gets kicked to BBD
just sayin’
as I recall
Doc wasn’t laughing!
But, yeah.

Can't recall where I read it
But Bass was around #22 in the league in dunks per minute played. Our highest Celtic last year, by comparison, was KG at around #43 as I recall.
hahahaha
15 three-pointers…..baby, baby, baby
mmmmm......Good stuff on the shooting percentages from different areas
That pic of BB shooting with his hand on top of the ball reminded me a bit of Anthony Mason, but besides the chiseled features and funky jumper they aren’t that similar. Mason had crazy handle for his size and build (or at least thought he did) and Bass is a two trick Pony on offense – mid range jumper and dunker.
Evan's articles repeatedly commented on the guide-hand-on-top, but imho, it's a non-issue
The more important thing to see in that pic is the shooting hand/arm. Look how nice and aligned the arm is in the vertical plane. That’s going to result in a consistent, accurate shot.
The only real negative about having the guide hand on top (as opposed to the side where most hold it) is if it obstructs the shooter’s sight and hence aim. But I suspect if it were doing so, there’s no way he’d be posting the numbers he’s been posting.
