During the dynasty era, Danny Ainge received hundreds of beautiful assists from Hall of Famer Larry Bird. Unfortunately, he was rejected at the rim this afternoon.
Everything was all fine and well when the Boston faithful expected to sign Hornets all-star David West. It would have been perfect. Doc Rivers had hinted at Garnett moving over to the center slot so there would be a starting roll for D West. The Celtics would have a 5 all star line up and an extremely explosive offense. This move may have even made Boston more attractive for superstar Chris Paul to join his old teammate from New Orleans and make the chase for the title.
The 3 year 27 mil deal was almost signed. Celtics would have sent Jermaine O’neal and possibly a few rookies to land West. Larry Bird decided he wanted to join in on the fun and offered West a 2 year 20 mil deal. Celtics did not have enough cap space to be able to sign West for more money annually, so the all star decided to take his talents to Indiana. The 3 million dollar difference must have meant more to him that having a chance to be alongside Kevin Garnett in the paint and be in the chase for his first ring.
This should be no shock to Celtics fans. As much as Larry legend loved being a Celtic and win 3 championships, India has always been his first love. Even during the parade after a championship he made it known what he would rather be doing, “There’s only one place I’d rather be. French Lick.”
This may end up being a blessing in disguise. David West is coming of knee surgery and there is no telling if he is going to be the same player he once was. Reports have shown Jermaine O’neal finally being healthy and adding strength rather than rehabilitating his knee. If he is able to sustain a starting roll for the Celtics, Kevin Garnett will be able to stay in his more natural forward power forward position. This is going to give Jeff Green an opportunity to step up and show what he can truly bring to the table now that he is a bit more familiar with the Celtic’s offense.
