Boston at Miami, A Second Playoff Rematch in Game 2 of the Season

Boston Celtics at Miami Heat, Dec 27, 2011 8:00 PM EST

Boston Celtics (0‐1) at Miami Heat (1‐0)
Game #: 2 of 66
Venue: American Airlines Arena, Miami
Time: 8:00 PM EST, Tuesday, December 27, 2011
TV: TNT Radio: WEEI
The Line: Celtics +9.5

Game Thread | Chat Room

In the second game of the season the Celtics and the Heat will again face a foe they met in the post season last year. Boston returns to Miami where their season ended in game five of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals coming off a loss to the Knicks in a nail biter. The Heat come back home with reams of confidence after blowing out the Mavericks in a 11 point win that was a 30+ point margin till some serious garbage time heroics by the Mavs.

Similar to Game 5 of the playoff series, the C's are facing an uphill battle due to injury, this time to Paul Pierce who is out tonight with a heel injury. As much as the Celtics will miss his offense they'll miss his ability to credibly defend LeBron James (as much as anyone can) more. Instead LeBron will lick his chops as he sees Sasha Pavlovic, Marquis Daniels, and perhaps Ray Allen guard him much of the night.

Star-divide

Things to watch:

LeBron James, he's the best player in the NBA and we're missing our only true SF who normally guards him most of the game.

Interior Help Defense: the Heat attack the paint and the rim with the talents of Wade, LeBron, and Bosh and the C's big men will have to be quick to contain their drives. Pierce's absence from the line up makes this even more important

Rajon Rondo: He was the best player on the floor for the C's on Christmas Day and he's the one of the few C's with a clear advantage in his match up. He needs have another big game for the C's to win tonight.

not liking our chances without Paul

even if Rondo goes off again we’re gonna have a really tough time. go C’s

Jermaine oneal

21 minutes so far 1 rebound 0 points 4 fouls
Sasha 11 min 4 fouls no rebounds 5 points
Wilcox 8 min 3 rebounds no points
Bradley 1 min 1 foul

Daniels is playing well

But has 5 fouls
Dooling is having a good game bass is doing ok but not as good as last game

Im not saying make this trade yet but

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=6rs9p27
It’s definately something to think about. We get young talent they get experience and a huge upgrade in sg. We downgrade a ton at sg unless dooling can play like this all the time and Moore can play like he did in the preseason. I think his trade propels Indiana to the finals and this give us a ton of young talent while not destroying our team this year we only lose one impact player and gain two guys who are going to be very good. Don’t make this trade just yet but keep birds number on the speed dial

by JuJuan some moore on Dec 27, 2011 11:04 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Sheesh. Not gonna happen. Give it a rest.

How much time do you spend on that Trade Machine?

NBA Officiating - Corrupt? Incompetent? Which is worse? Does it matter? It sucks.

by mmmmm on Dec 27, 2011 11:06 PM EST up reply actions

Litterally took 10 seconds

But still a lot of time. Oneal was worthless tonight we have to do something.
Tonight rondo played well but had 7 turn overs
Bass and dooling played well
Sasha and Bradley suck
Ray Allen could very well leave after this season anyway why not trade him

by JuJuan some moore on Dec 27, 2011 11:11 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Ditto

Paul’s one of the best in the NBA at guarding LeBron, and it’s hard to see the C’s succeeding without him. That said, I desperately am hoping for a Celtics win here, so the narrative for the next couple weeks isn’t about how the Heat are the greatest power since Frederick the Great suited up for Prussia.

I never stop believing

But if we don’t bring our A+++ game this one could get ugly fast. I can’t wait till we get healthy. My Brandon Bass predicter says we are due three ferocious jams tonight.

by redbridge13 on Dec 27, 2011 3:38 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Ferocious Jams

Even if that was all he could do I would take it. I’m loving the fact that we have a player who brings it so hard this year. Layups are great, don’t get me wrong and they’re worth the same number of points, but there is a definite boost a team gets when someone is out there trying to tear down the backboard Darryl Dawkins style.

The game information is all out of wack. For one thing, the game starts at 8 PM, unless I’m mistaken, today is Tuesday, not Wednesday, and it’s the 27th, not the 21st.. Also, the game isn’t in Boston, it’s in Miami.

Quis guarded Lebron pretty well last year

let’s see if Lebron actually uses that post game he was talking about

I suspect Wade and Lebron will be sitting on the bench during the last few minutes of this game. It should be be pretty much over with 4-5 minutes left.

I'll take the Celtics getting 9.5

Nice bet.

Pavlovic on Lebron ....ouch...Lebron gets "Super Star" calls by the refs even when another star is guarding him ...so tonight won't be pretty

It is is hard to describe in words how much I hate Lebron and the Heat…..Riley makes me vomit, Lebron makes me almost have a stroke, the whole stinking bunch…

We may not win tonight, but the Heat are losers just by showing up…and when they don’t show up!

Libby has been said to have worked on the midrange game and post-ups, less inclined to be jacking up 3’s. Realizing his potential? Scary thought.

On yahoo sports: “The Celtics are looking for payback against the Heat after losing to them in the playoffs.” Really? No, it’s on the other foot: “Libby desires to erase past humiliations by stepping on Leprechaun’s throat.” Will be glad if Green stays close.

Our bench is a failure

Danny did a poor job. This is the worst bench since the Big 3 is assembled.

by KingCeltics on Dec 27, 2011 6:33 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I disagree

Danny did a great job with what he had to work with- the Jeff Green thing was a fluke. Bass is legit, Pietrus can play, Wilcox is a decent back up center, Johnson and Moore might be good (way too early for anyone to tell). Dooling is okay as a backup point and not a perpetual physical and mental health risk, Marquis is reliable and knows the system. The new guys will all get better as the year goes on, remember we had a short camp. Bradley I’m not sold on, but he can come in for defensive stops when needed.
O’Neil is our biggest question mark at this point.
I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Bass ends up starting and Garnet moves over to the 5 some nights.

Don’t know too much about basketball, but it seems like he can play defense at least. With Jeff Green out, and Pierce being injured, Im sure we would need Sasha in for defense and such…

But Im likely wrong I suppose. Im trying to get more into watching the celts. I will say that last game I was not impressed with Sasha.

just want guys charging into the paint. If anything it should open up the outside.

Dooling looks like he would try and make any shot, even if it looks bad.. meh.

And Allen can go inside. he is tough enough, and fast enough. They say he has the body of a 28 year old, that he is in excellent shape.

But I think he would be best outside. We can have Rondo/Bradley/Dooling and Daniels go inside. Sometimes Garnett. But to go into the paint, draw a couple people, then kick it out. Or if its open enough just take the layup.

there are too many ridiculous, ticky tack, superstar calls – it’s not fun to watch with all the stoppages of play – perhaps with a challenge system, the game would improve -

I'd say trade KG and Allen for guys

but Im not too much schooled into NBA other than playing a lot of 2K12. XD

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

Too bad. Im the guy who trades, Pierce, Allen, KG, Rondo, get first rounders, get younger, talented guys in those trades, trade the picks for next years first rounders if I don’t like anything. Rinse and repeat with developing guys, and manipulating picks.

:)

We are really hurt by not having Pierce.

Our offense is predicated on having two 3PT shooters available to space the floor. We have Ray in the starting 5 and that’s it.

The Knicks and the Heat are just collapsing into the paint.

This is why I was begging before the game for Sasha to at least attempt the 3PT shot. And he has, but, as we all could have predicted, he can’t stay out of foul trouble against Lebron.

Celtics are outclassed, outplayed on every level

Adding PP alone would not change this game’s outcome, and I think the Celtics know it. This is a very dispiriting team to face so early in the season, because the Heat are an example of what a GREAT team looks like… a great team to which the Cs do not now compare.

And I think the Celtics are actually intimidated. In 4 years, I’ve never seen them quite like this. Except maybe for Ray, they’re playing SCARED. Even Rondo. Never thought I’d see that.

Bottom line: I don’t think the Cs have a legitimate shot this year. Like the Lakers and Mavs, it looks like their time has come and gone.

i think this is a big knee jerk

its one game. theyre not playing very well. but i think some bad play (mainly transition / rotations and turnovers) are correctable. are they the favorites? definitely not but lets not rush to judgement

Both these first two games were setup for us to fail without Pierce or Green.

Melo and Lebron are arguably the best two SFs in the league and to go up against them without a power 3 is just futile.

With Pierce and if Pietrus can get healthy, we will be a completely different team.

Ray! Stop Wade dammit!

I’ll take 11 players with heart on the field over 11 guys with just talent. Talent is fleeting, it goes away over time. Heart is what drives you to be better. To push yourself beyond what you think your capabilities are. To show us that when you strive, all things are possible.- SMP

a lot to be happy with from tonight’s game. poor officiating, fixable turnovers, no Pierce, and we lose by 8? AND a possible kryptonite against Miami (zone d)? not too bad. and the bench looks pretty good.

KG actually shot well - 6 of 12, but got NO foul calls and got no free throw attempts.

even though he was clearly hacked a ton – they are cycling through his highlights just now and he was clearly fouled on 4 or 5 plays. That could easily have been a few more points on free throws that he should have been taking.

NBA Officiating - Corrupt? Incompetent? Which is worse? Does it matter? It sucks.

by mmmmm on Dec 27, 2011 11:12 PM EST up reply actions

he's definately not a go-to guy in the post anymore though

we also aren’t going anywhere with him pulling down 5 boards a game

by mc34 on Dec 27, 2011 11:12 PM EST up reply actions

Well, he never really HAS been a 'go to guy' in the post.

At least not in like, forever.

Doc talked about this a few weeks ago. He basically said he doesn’t know why people criticize KG for not playing in the post because after 15 years, that’s never ever been his game and it isn’t going to be his game. He’s a stretch 4. He’ll go to the rim when it’s open, but he’s not going to bang and post up.

NBA Officiating - Corrupt? Incompetent? Which is worse? Does it matter? It sucks.

by mmmmm on Dec 27, 2011 11:16 PM EST up reply actions

But yeah, we normally should expect him to grab more rebounds.

Unfortunately, the Heat had so many high percentage layups & dunks on their fast breaks, there literally were not that many rebounds available to be grabbed!

Miami missed 33 shots and we grabbed 24 defensive rebounds – 73%. That’s actually pretty good share against a team like Miami.

NBA Officiating - Corrupt? Incompetent? Which is worse? Does it matter? It sucks.

by mmmmm on Dec 27, 2011 11:20 PM EST up reply actions

BLUEPRINT TO BEAT HEAT

All you have to do is play zone against Heat and be under 15 turnovers and the celtics can beat them.. with pietrus and pierce to much better defenders in the zone and much better scorers the C’s are gonna be fine

by keyes4323 on Dec 27, 2011 11:09 PM EST reply actions

also we have reason to be legitimately excited about Rondo

seems to finally understand that he needs to get to the line. aggression let up a bit near the end of the game, but he had a bunch of assists in the second half

by mc34 on Dec 27, 2011 11:11 PM EST reply actions

He played awesome he had 8 rebounds

The seven turnovers were too many though nearly 2 a quarter

by JuJuan some moore on Dec 27, 2011 11:13 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

yeah way too many turnovers

but there were a couple of plays that he probably wouldn’t have made if not for the circumstances (being down by 20). not too worried about that

by mc34 on Dec 27, 2011 11:14 PM EST up reply actions

The TOs were just sort of a natural result of the pace of play and the raw nature of the season.

Yes, we were sloppy (24 TOs). But so were the Heat (20).

It’s only game 2 after a short camp. Both these teams will be down to around 14-15 TOs per game once they get the kinks worked out.
