Jeff Green Agrees To One Year Deal

Welcome back Jeff.

Looks like Jeff Green is coming back on a short term deal.

Twitter / @julianbenbow:

Doc said Jeff Green's in the practice facility. He's come to terms on a one-year deal, Doc said. Unclear if it's the qualifier.

I would have to imagine that it is the qualifying offer, which means he'll be an unrestricted free agent next year. Of course, if the team is impressed with him and has the cap space, they can always re-sign him next year (a players' current team can offer one year more than other teams). But this way they have the flexibility to clear cap space for free agents in the summer.

Other notes from Doc's media session:

Twitter / @scott_souza:

Doc Rivers said he told Danny Ainge to get him best players out there and he'll make them fit regardless of position.

Twitter / @julianbenbow:

Doc said the conversation with Glen Davis was emotional. "They're always emotional."

As noted below, the Celtics agreed to a vet min. deal with Chris Wilcox. The Celtics still have the $3M exception to use if they wish. Brandon Bass can play center in some lineups but I'd like to see some taller guys (other than the camp fodder guys like Sweetney) brought in.

So the Celtics roster stands as follows:

Starters: Rajon Rondo, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Jermaine O'Neal

Reserves: Avery Bradley, Kenyon Dooling, Marquis Daniels, E'Twaun Moore, Jeff Green, Brandon Bass, Chris Wilcox

Rookies to be signed: JaJuan Johnson (likely signed tomorrow), Gilbert Brown (maybe)

More details as they become available.

LOL

I’m ecstatic really – a one year deal for him is ideal – no risk, high potential reward

my prayers are answered......

100% agree Jeff!!! A one year deal is perfect, now it’s up to Doc to get him minutes at the #3, not the #4. Let Bass backup the #4 along with JJJ.

watching training camp interview with doc and he says

he’s still going to use green at PF and SF. that when he plays SF he will be posting guys up and when PF he will be on the elbow and doc wants him to blow by them with his speed….so really i guess the team has a ton of options for PF

Ainge has done a masterful job so far.

Even with the Paul fiasco I’d have to say that at first glance this is his best set of offseason moves since Posey-House.

One last piece to use and (broken record alert) I hope its Aaron Gray.

As far as Green goes I think he’s going to be really good for the Celtics this year. Doc just needs to get him up to around 30MPG, no excuses.

He's restricted, isn't he?

And the Celtics can only offer the 3mil mid-level, you better believe that would get matched.

Not sure about the second unit

We’re going to need another guy that can put it on the deck and take shots. Rip Hamilton would be perfect. He and Ray could even split the duties 50/50 at this point.

Who the hell is Greg Stiemsma? Why didn’t we just bring Tiny Gallon up from the D league?

I’m afraid some things can’t be taught Po. But here’s to a one year deal for trying.

At least

It has no potential of being the other ‘green’ contract.

Gray is the guy from Pitt right?

Gray would be a nice pick up...

if the C’s can get him some way.

My 1st preference would be Kurt Thomas though as he would be cheaper to sign and would be a great fit for the C’s I think.

Its rumored though Chicago wants him back so if the C’s want him they better move quick before the Bulls snatch Thomas up.

not sure

if a bench of

Dooling, Daniels, Green, Bass, Wilcox

makes me feel better than a bench of

West, Daniels, Green, BBD, Wilcox (or the actual big man I think they’ll use the MLE) on.

by slamtheking on Dec 9, 2011 8:24 PM EST reply actions

im hoping rip hamilton is added...doubtful but hoping

plus didnt ainge say green will start this year? maybe im wrong

either way a bench of dooling, rip, green, bass, wilcox/jo

or

dooling, rip, pierce, bass, wilcox/jo is a decent bench

i just cant see daniels getting the back up SG spot when he really cant hit the deep ball

by craziness@analltimehigh on Dec 9, 2011 8:30 PM EST up reply actions

He was actually improving on the deep shot.

Last off season he was quoted saying he spent the entire summer working on that.

So jury is still out on where or not he can become a better shooter from deep.

I sure..

hope Doc finds some court time to play J.J. ,especially with Baby gone as I think that kid is a talent and can not just help the C’s long term down the line, but this year also if given the some opportunity playing behind KG & Bass.

by fordescort on Dec 9, 2011 10:02 PM EST up reply actions

interesting

Jamal Crawford is headed to the Bulls

this afternoon the Bulls and Celtics were thought to be logical destinations for Rip Hamilton (with the Bulls being more likely at the time)

I wonder…

Faith and Sports - an essay by Jeff Clark

by Jeff Clark on Dec 9, 2011 8:30 PM EST reply actions

bulls are a scary team

could they still get hamilton with MLE or did they use that on crawford?

by craziness@analltimehigh on Dec 9, 2011 8:30 PM EST up reply actions

pretty foolish signing by the Bulls, I think

great news news for us… Come to Boston, Rip

by mc34 on Dec 9, 2011 8:35 PM EST up reply actions

I was about to post that Crawford

would be the next terrific addition to add firepower, so is Rip a possibility now ?

by gocanes1 on Dec 9, 2011 8:44 PM EST up reply actions

From ESPN.com news services:

Guard Marcus Thornton has re-signed with the Sacramento Kings, according to his agent, Tony Dutt.

A source with knowledge of the deal told ESPN The Magazine’s Chris Broussard the deal is for $40 million over five years.

The league will throw money at anyone.

by C'sFanfrmNy on Dec 9, 2011 8:39 PM EST reply actions

Unreal...

This is why the Kings never get better, and why the whole lockout was nonsense.

by Sizzlack on Dec 9, 2011 9:44 PM EST up reply actions

hmmmmm.......

If I remember correctly, Danny had inquired about him before or expressed interest. What a great add to finish out a roster in quick fashion. I will feel better with one more cheap big, but Rip would be nice too……. kinda like a Vinnie Johnson off the bench…. instant offense.

by CelticsUKfan on Dec 9, 2011 8:42 PM EST reply actions

It would be nice if RIP Hamilton comes to Boston, but I have this strange feeling he’s gonna run to the Bulls, Knicks or Lakers. A lot of players are reluctant to come to Boston because they think they won’t get play time.

by C'sFanfrmNy on Dec 9, 2011 8:45 PM EST reply actions

They had to...

The Bulls need a second option scorer more than anything. But I can’t imagine Crawford playing the 2.

by C'sFanfrmNy on Dec 9, 2011 8:52 PM EST up reply actions

If I were the Bulls I would rather have Hamilton

better defender, way less money and years, needs the ball less.

by mc34 on Dec 9, 2011 8:55 PM EST up reply actions

Have they actually committed to signing Crawford?

It seems like that was the plan earlier in the day, but I wonder if it still is now that Hamilton’s available for probably cheaper. Clearly, Crawford’s the better player. If they do get Crawford, maybe Rip comes here.

We really need another 7 footer though, more than anything.

by Mencius on Dec 9, 2011 8:59 PM EST up reply actions

not that much out there for centers that would consider us and help us really

i have hopes we can add someone like mohammed for vet min and add rip…that would put the roster at 14, 15 if we sign brown but i think we hold out that last spot of amnesty players who might clear waivers

by craziness@analltimehigh on Dec 9, 2011 9:19 PM EST up reply actions

don' t see it.......

Po, I like Delonte too, but don’t see it happening. If I had to choose between him and Rip, welllllllllllll… it’s Rip for me. Same with him versus another big. I think Delonte wants a payday. BUT, if Moore goes to NBADL, maybe……………..

by CelticsUKfan on Dec 9, 2011 8:55 PM EST up reply actions

I saw a interview...

tonight on comcast and Doc was asked point blank by Dickerson what about Delonte and Doc just ignored the question and did not answer it.

I hope not , but I assume that means the C’s are not interested in Delonte.

If it is indeed the case to bad as Delonte was a great fit for this team and nice player to have come off the bench.

by fordescort on Dec 9, 2011 10:07 PM EST up reply actions

well technically he said he wants better players in a polite way

he said there are still some big name players out there who we may get, then we will see about our own…basically he thinks they can upgrade…RIP please

by craziness@analltimehigh on Dec 9, 2011 10:43 PM EST up reply actions

When he wasn't hurt

That was one of the big problems. The guy barely played. All those injuries caught up with the C’s.

Tweets about Rondo's presser just now

@scottsouza Rajon Rondo did everything he could to show he was mature, upbeat and happy to be in Boston. He was as conversational and cordial as ever.

@espnforsberg Rondo was funny, engaging, and not afraid to tackle the tough topics. If rumors affected him, he’s not showing it.

@pflanns Rondo held court for about 7 minutes with the press flawlessly.

Rondo will be fine guys.

by mc34 on Dec 9, 2011 8:48 PM EST reply actions

looks like mavs will add vince carter

and they are said to be high on billups if he claims waivers…they get both and they will still be a beast in the west.

i fear billup will end up with the heat though

i fear billup will end up with the heat though

If he goes to Miami, the he goes. There’s nothing to fear. At Billups age, he’ll definitely go to a contender. Don’t think it was smart for NYK to cut him. They’ll regret that later on.

by C'sFanfrmNy on Dec 9, 2011 9:04 PM EST up reply actions

It would be interesting to see where Barron Davis, Chauncey Billups, Ronny Turiaf, Gilbert Arenas, Vince Carter and RIP head to?

by C'sFanfrmNy on Dec 9, 2011 9:05 PM EST up reply actions

Reserves: Avery Bradley, Kenyon Dooling, E'Twaun Moore, Jeff Green, Brandon Bass, Chris Wilcox

They need some more depth to add, but I’m just not sold on Bradley. I think the Celtics need to cut ties with him, but that’s my opinion.

by C'sFanfrmNy on Dec 9, 2011 9:07 PM EST reply actions

Yes, I think important need now

is to add FIREPOWER, a scorer, if Crawford is going to Bulls, then Rip; not too familiar with Barron Davis

by gocanes1 on Dec 9, 2011 9:14 PM EST up reply actions

im not ready to give up on bradley yet. i mean he cant even drink yet

he needed to work on some things in the offseason and he said he worked hard, wants to play, etc…waiting training camp today i can tell you he was lifting weights, he’s added a lot of muscle. cant wait to see if he improved his game, i for one hope he did

by craziness@analltimehigh on Dec 9, 2011 9:24 PM EST up reply actions

I just don’t see what he can offer the Celtics right now especially with the Big 3 trying to contending for one last title shot.

by C'sFanfrmNy on Dec 9, 2011 9:27 PM EST up reply actions

cant have the entire roster active anyways so he might not even play but

if being around the team makes him better then it helps the team. also, i think bradleys defense will get him in games, even if spot minutes

With Jeff Green under contract and BBD gone in a S&T

.
Does that mean that the Celtics ablilty to trade for Chris Paul is over? There is nothing in the cupboard to add to Rondo’s contract anymore.

by GetYourSoxOn on Dec 9, 2011 9:28 PM EST reply actions

It wouldn’t be wise for the Celtics go after CP3, because the NBA’s reputation is in more jeopardy at the moment. If the Celtics were to land CP3 there would be more out cries across the league especially if he’s teaming up with 3 superstar/hall of fame players in Garnett, Pierce and Allen.

by C'sFanfrmNy on Dec 9, 2011 9:34 PM EST up reply actions

I was also hearing Crawford to Bulls all of a sudden from random twitter sources

but there still hasn’t been any real confirmation. Starting to doubt it a little bit, Hamilton was a better fit for them anyways

by mc34 on Dec 9, 2011 9:49 PM EST reply actions

Glad to hear as a Green fan he ...

has officially signed as I am really looking forward and hoping he can have a big year for the C’s.

Once again Ainge does a good job on the business ends of matters by not over paying or giving Green a long contract.

The C’s are now setup to give Green a good test run this year and if he works out (which I hope is the case) they can resign him if they wish (or use him as a trade chip) and in case he does not work out his contract will come off the books to allow them financial flexibility to go out and resign another player next summer….win – win situation.

by fordescort on Dec 9, 2011 9:53 PM EST reply actions

apparently he played in the d-league

6’11, seems to rebound and block shots fairly well, judging by his stats. he’s an emergency guy, I don’t think Danny is done

by mc34 on Dec 9, 2011 10:16 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, there's always room for another center!

but even in a D-league world, defensive player of the year is a good start….
What’s with the difficult center surnames though? haha. Somebody’s gotta think of a nickname for our new big guy! Like Stitch for Krstic

by japsuki on Dec 9, 2011 10:21 PM EST up reply actions

Greg who...lol

Well he is not Kurt Thomas or Arron Gray but at least he is a legit center with size.

by fordescort on Dec 9, 2011 10:23 PM EST up reply actions

danny did us right with the green contract. i hope doc uses his bench more and doesn’t blow out the 5 starters-they are all too fragile. this season is on doc to really shine. i would like rip as well, fingernails and all.
