At the start of the season, the Celtics were clearly the best overall team in paper. Not only did we have a solid starting five, our reserves were also probably the best bench mob the league has seen in quite a while. But then, the injuries started piling up. Perk, Rondo, KG, Shaq, Semih, Delonte, and now, Marquis Daniels.
During the first few weeks, the injuries to other players were not really felt that much, (as our impressive record shows) because we are so deep in almost all positions and different players have been stepping up. Our bench, especially have been overachieving thus far, but still I think we need some upgrades because some players are playing beyond their capabilities (like Big Baby taking a three in crunch time) . Sure, we're playing very well as a unit but individually, there can be a lot of mismatches that the other team can exploit . For me, our biggest weaknesses are length and athleticism at the forward spot (SF and PF) and a solid backup PG (a TRUE pointguard!) Notice how we struggle against the athletic and fastbreaking teams? And now with Daniels down, our thin SF rotation would be very much exposed, especially against the Kobes, Durants and Lebrons... So this situation might finally push Danny Ainge to consider some trades to make some upgrades. I've always wanted to trade away BBD, nate, wafer and even gody for a rebounding (and not undersized) PF, an athletic and exciting (above-the-rim) SF and a reliable backup PG . Some moves (trades and/or FA signings) seem inevitable, and I believe, if Danny does it right, this could be a turning point and we'd be running over the other teams all the way to Banner # 19!
