Carmelo Anthony To New York, ... Maybe

LOS ANGELES CA - FEBRUARY 18: Carmelo Anthony of the Denver Nuggets watches the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge and Youth Jam at Staples Center on February 18 2011 in Los Angeles California. (Photo by Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images)

This one seems to be coming down to the final stretch (finally) so here's the latest.

Knicks improve offer for Anthony - NBA - Yahoo! Sports

The Knicks offered a choice of forward Danilo Gallinari or rookie guard Landry Fields on Friday, and Denver officials preferred Gallinari, a source with knowledge of the talks said. The proposed deal would send Gallinari, point guard Raymond Felton, forward Wilson Chandler, Eddy Curry’s expiring contract and a first-round pick to the Nuggets for Anthony, point guard Chauncey Billups, Renaldo Balkman and Shelden Williams.

There's still a chance that the Nets could pull off the upset but I think their role here is primarily to drive up the price on the Knicks.  Sounds like this could (and should) get done by the end of the weekend, which would open up the rest of the trade market headed into the trade deadline.

Regardless, Denver fans are ready to move on.

It's time for Melo to go... - Denver Stiffs

Whether or not the Carmelo Anthony Era in Denver is actually over, it should be.

We'll update if anything else actually happens.

how sad must it be...

…to be a nuggets fan and feel like your team’s nba relevance is on the brink of ending for at least a short while. i shudder at the thought of the Cs eventually reaching this point. though for us i suppose it’ll be more of an unwillingness of the body, rather than the mind.

true

The Carmelo Era in Denver seems to be over. They made the Western Conference Finals only 20 months ago and now they’ll be lucky to get the 8th seed.

However, this is a pretty good deal for them considering some of the other trade offers they’ve had. I like the inclusion of Raymond Felton for Chauncey Billups, as Felton may be a solid contributor or All Star of the future.

like charles barkley said last night during the rookie / sophmore game

…the nets and knicks are stupid – melo has flat out said he wants to play for the knicks, so why don’t the knicks just make him prove it – and wait until the season ends…to offer so much of your future for this guy is flat out loco -

Speaking of Barkley

Remember when he was traded in his prime for Hornacek, Tim Perry, and Andrew Lang? If this deal goes through, I think it will be one of the better returns on a traded superstar player I’ve ever been aware of. Actual productive young talent. I wonder what they do with Chandler though… do they want to give him a big contract this summer? Sign and trade him?

by Tugboat on Feb 19, 2011 9:25 AM EST up reply actions

There good players

but they shouldn’t pay too much. The guys they will get are not going to be great players, but at the same time. They might be under a different system. The Nuggets will have to think of what guy they want running the future. Lawson or Felton. They could use some other guys to package and get some guys that are all-star’s of the future. I don’t like what Melo is doing, but it’s a far cry from Lebron’s exit. Melo has been a man as much as you can be in this modern day sport. He seems up front with the Nuggets. Lebron was not and he ruined his home state. Melo wants to go back home.

Don't like the Billups/Felton part of the deal

For the Nuggets, why?

They already have Ty Lawson, who seems to be an up and coming PG. I don’t particularly see Felton as a big improvement. When he was in Charlotte, he seemed to be going nowhere. His stats in NY, to me anyways, are a product of playing in D’Antoni’s system coupled with playing along side Stoudemire. Why take on the extra salary?

As far as NY is concerned, it ’s a lateral move at best. Neither are probably in their future plans, but at least Felton could be.

by KG's Knee on Feb 19, 2011 9:55 AM EST up reply actions

rebuild

felton only has a contract through next year and at a reasonable price ($7.5m). lawson is the future in denver, IMO, so i epect felton to be shopped in the offseason.

I’ll be happy with this trade. Ask Cavs fan how they feel for not trade Lebron…Good deal Denver.

yup

at least they kept enough players and got enough in return to still compete.

felton, lawson, jr. smith, chandler, gallo, nene, harrington, martin, birdman an extra 1st rounder and the team is only at $31m salary next year. alot better off than the cav’s

Also,

what does this mean for New York?

Will they be a contender in the East this year?

Not this year...

But they’ll be a more interesting team.

Gave away too many pieces and now have to integrate too many. I dont thonk they want Billups moving foreward. But it will take some time to gel in a new system, … next year.

by Warrior Spirit on Feb 19, 2011 9:03 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Billups is just a temp in this case

New York’s main goal was to get two superstars to excite the crowds and fill up the seats. Melo and Amare can do that even if they have no team around them yet. If this goes down, New York’s next goal should be to get Chris Paul, after that, build a strong supporting cast.

They have a couple of years to build themselves up so they shouldn’t be too concerned about winning the ring right away, just make the playoffs and make the people happy.

by Banner 18 on Feb 19, 2011 9:41 AM EST up reply actions

agree

Amare is not a center.

A solid defensive center would be a major need if the Knicks hope to compete for titles going forward.

by KG's Knee on Feb 19, 2011 10:18 AM EST up reply actions

tyson chandler makes so much sense for them next year

if they can pry him away from dallas as a FA the knicks will have something as he’s a great fast break guy.

Is the NBA going to be like Money League Baseball...

…in which all the best players are going to accrue to the big money markets? I’ll stop watching if that’s the case. I stopped watching MLB in 2002.

by Raef on Feb 19, 2011 8:38 AM EST reply actions

Luckily for Boston

We’re one of the bigger markets.

For all the other NBA teams, yeah, I could see why they would be concerned. Although, in fairness, there has historically only been a few teams that are elite from year to year. Quite often its the same teams too. More than half of the NBA titles have been won by just two franchises.

by KG's Knee on Feb 19, 2011 10:02 AM EST up reply actions

not sure i feel Utah had some significant success lately

but i see your point is probably on them making it to the playoffs in the west league for so many years.

The situation has a lot of things to do with the salary rules that the NBA are currently using. With a hard salary cap it could be a lot different (NFL). There is possibility that the league will also adopt the hard cap rules as many owners have already proposed in the past. As a fan of the celts which is one of the bigger market teams, i am not sure i want to see that happen. Contraction would be more thrilling for us fans, imho.

by friedgreentomatoes on Feb 19, 2011 12:18 PM EST up reply actions

no offense to big shot chauncey but I think felton is a better fit with Amare

to me the biggest hole in this deal for the knicks is losing felton. he was a really good pickup for them and has good chemostry with amare. chauncey is at the end and the knicks are still going to need a point guard. And they’re still going to need defense. no question it will sell seats at the garden but I’m not convinced this makes the knicks a better TEAM

by Red2 on Feb 19, 2011 8:48 AM EST reply actions

Tired of the Melo/Lebron II talk.

He’s self-absorbed. The team concept is so far down the list of his priorities. It’s a bad precedent to let a player do what he’s doing.

by powerlifter610 on Feb 19, 2011 9:03 AM EST reply actions

In this particular case I don't see too much fault here

Melo is going to be able to be a free agent at the end of this season. He will have the right to sigh anywhere he so chooses. If he really wants to play in NY, that’s his choice, and nobody can criticize him for it. SAme goes for LeBron going to Miami. Don’t like the whole drama surrounding either on of them, but, their choices on where to play are not a big deal to me.

Melo , in a perverse way, is actually doing Denver a favor. Would it have been better if Melo just left at the end of the season and Denver was stuck with nothing? Sure, it stinks for Nuggets fans their best player wants to leave, but that’s the way it goes. Melo is from NYC and so is his wife. Is it really surprising he wants to play there?

by KG's Knee on Feb 19, 2011 10:11 AM EST up reply actions

its a lot different actually

Melo hates to talk and was apparently bothered by the rumors and media questions. Dude just refused to sign the extension and then a lot of speculation/rumors just rised up. Media likes this kind of stuff. Fair weather fans like it.

Make no mistake, LeBron wanted attention so much that he would make “The Decision” on ESPN who were also dumb enuff to make the show.

by friedgreentomatoes on Feb 19, 2011 12:28 PM EST up reply actions

so dolan did step in and the knicks are going to get worse, at least before

they sign some other good players in summer if they can, as i have not checked their salary situation.

by friedgreentomatoes on Feb 19, 2011 9:36 AM EST reply actions

It's a Business afterall...

Melo would be just plain dumb to go to the Nets. They dont have the pieces to build a real contending team around even by adding him to Lopez. Avery is not enough of a magician to overcome that big of a lack of players, not to mention giving away all the draft picks. The Nets have a better chance by staying basically intact and drafting the best players available with the picks.

The Knicks at least have Amare and one of the starters (Fields?) still on board after a trade. If he truly wants to play for a contender and go somewhere in the playoffs, he goes to the Knicks. If he just wants ‘his money’ then he goes to the Nets.

If I am Danny and the Celtics, I hope he goes to the Nets. Less of a threat than the Knicks.

Maybe I'm in the minority...

but I don’t understand for one second how people take issue with this deal.. this is like the C’s trading for Garnett, the NY players may have a bit more upside but c’mon now.. Gallinari’s ceiling is at most Peja in his prime, and that’s only if he is surrounded by good players at the same time, and that’s a big if. The rest of those guys, Felton will go back to what he was in Charlotte, chandler is too inconsistent to be more than a role player… plus the Knicks are getting Billups, a champion and proven winner, he will instantly become the veteran presence they need, I think this a no-brainer for the knicks, this could easily put the knicks in top 5 in the east discussion (although still nowhere near the C’s)

by JunkyardDawg on Feb 19, 2011 10:49 AM EST reply actions

I agree

plus Billups has a few more years left

by Ruben Wolkowyski on Feb 19, 2011 10:53 AM EST up reply actions

I have no issue with the trade.

Nor does itmake me fear them.
I just want to stop hearing about it.

by Warrior Spirit on Feb 19, 2011 11:03 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Gallinari has more upside than being the next Peja

He drives to the basket as well as shoots outside so has a more comlete offensive game, though he’s not quite the outside shooter that Peja is.

Agree on all other points. This is a good move for the Knicks and no question they are around #5 in the East. However, their bench will be hideous so I don’t see them getting past the 2nd round of the playoffs. ECF would be a shocker, IMO.

by Surferdad on Feb 19, 2011 11:07 AM EST up reply actions

Out of the 1st round would be a shocker. unless it happens on a last second game winning 3 from Billups, in fact a couple of them.

by Warrior Spirit on Feb 19, 2011 11:46 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

I'm not sure about Felton

It’s easy to say Dantoni is inflating his stats, but it’s just as easy to say that Larry Brown was holding him back. Just look at what happened to DJ Augustin after Brown left and Silas took over. I think Felton is a solid starter on a reasonable contract and could be easily moved (if Denver is happier with Lawson) to a team looking for a younger PG, such as Atlanta or Portland, or a talent upgrade, such as Sacramento or Miami. In other words, he’s at the very least a good asset.

by Tugboat on Feb 19, 2011 11:30 AM EST up reply actions

Felton to Miami would not be good, but what the heck would Denver want from them? Chalmers as a back up to Lawson, plus another expiring and a pick?

by Warrior Spirit on Feb 19, 2011 11:49 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

I meant to include

Detroit as a sensible destination too. Atlanta makes a lot of sense – maybe for Marvin?

by Tugboat on Feb 20, 2011 5:53 PM EST up reply actions

To tie together a few points...

-I think, in a weird way, this is the way impending free agency SHOULD be handled. Think about how much better either Cleveland or Toronto would be this year/going forward if Lebron/Bosh had gone to management and said “hey, thanks for the 7 years, but I’m going to sign elsewhere after the season. I’ll let you know where I would sign an extension, but you might want to trade me to get something in return.” It’s not Melo’s fault that the media over covers every comment/angle of the situation.

-Some have said that NY should make Melo wait for the offseason and sign him as a FA. However, that’s a little risky; you do risk the chance of melo getting cold feet and just taking his max deal; Denver has the same gamble but in reverse: maybe he wouldn’t leave. As Roy has pointed out elsewhere, in order for NY to sign Melo to the max, they would have to renounce the rights to guys like Azubuike and Chandler anyway, so trading Chandler doesn’t really “count,” if you will. So this trade is really about giving up just Gallinari and a fairly pedestrian pick for the security of locking up Melo and knowing he won’t change his mind. Considering Gallinari and Melo play the same position, not a bad deal for NYK.

-Don’t sleep on my binky Azubuike!! By trading for Melo they can keep his bird rights, and maybe, if they see behind the scenes he’s healthy, they can lock him up for a few years at a bargain. He’d be a dynamic side-kick or trade piece if he gets back to pre injury form. Shawne williams has looked like a decent player too. I don’t think they have bird rights, but they may be able to use early bird rights or something to sign him (if another team doesn’t like him more) which they may have had to renounce to try to sign Melo outright

-More options for NY by staying over the cap. Remember, (though there is uncertainty about how this will work), currently you only get the MLE and LLE if you are over the cap. To be under the cap you must renounce both of those. So by trading for Melo, you stay over the cap and get to use both. So REALLY, it’s the difference between Gallo+First+Melo+Felton vs. Melo+Billups+MLE+LLE+options/control on Azubuike/Shawne Williams.

-Preemptive “edit:” The Knicks could make a lot of cap room, but it’s not like they could easily accomodate for a max deal, so they’d have to bank on Melo’s desire to be in new york being worth several millions of dollars, including the uncertainty of the new CBA. Currently, the cap is at 56 million or so, and i have NY’s next season’s payroll at 49 mill. Turiaf has a PO that he will probably take, so that stays. They can renounce Chandler to get to 45.9. If they traded Randolph to a team with space, they’d end up at 42.99 mil. Still a good, whay, 5 million per year shorter and one year shorter than re-signing with Denver? That’s a lot of risk for “cold feet.”

This is a pretty low-end offer

for Anthony and Billups. There are a few potentially nice players in the trade, but no one legit star. at least when we traded for KG, we gave up a 20/10 guy in big al and lots of other potential talent (green was still thought of highly, banks had shown flashes, gomes was solid, and telfair had moments). fact is, most of these guys have highly inflated stats because they play for d’antoni. also, they play no defense at all. denver kind of screwed themselves, of course. they paid too much money for players (nene, for instance) that made it very hard for them to upgrade the cast around carmelo. fact is, if denver had a chance of winning a title in the next few years, i doubt carmelo would leave. given the way that team is built…they have no chance. they can, at best, be a 3 or 4 seed that gets bounced in the 2nd round of the playoffs. at best.

by guy incognito on Feb 19, 2011 2:59 PM EST reply actions

Banks was traded before the Garnett trade, he was part of the Ricky Davis – Wally Szczerbiak trade.

It was Theo Ratliff and his expiring contract who was also a part of the Garnett trade, as well as a draft pick (who turned out to be Wayne Ellington)

by Ruben Wolkowyski on Feb 19, 2011 11:25 PM EST up reply actions

Melo will not make the Knicks much better.

At the most it will make them a playoff team doomed to finish 4th or 5th in the east every year after the C’s retire.

The Bulls and Heat are extremely better and Orlando would probably be better. And watch out for the 76ers who are actually building a team the right way.

I think the Melo trade will set the Knicks back another decade.

so in the 2012-13 season your looking at

1. Bulls
2. Heat
3. Orlando
4. Atlanta (if all that talent can ever learn how to play basketball)
5. Knicks/76ers

They are going to purge their team for 5th.

P.S. No i don’t have much hope for the post Garnett/Allen C’s. Unless we can get in Dwight Howard or Blake Griffen. Which might be possible if those two teams continue on their current paths.

by Phil125 on Feb 19, 2011 8:45 PM EST reply actions

Orlando wont be keeping Dwight and they have Arenas, so they might not even make the playoffs.
If Atlanta keeps that core up they will be on the same level as the knicks who will attempt to be in the Dwight/CP3 market anyway, if they get one they make the leap into the top 3.
I feel Ray Allen would sign a team friendly contract and play longer than Pierce, even if off the bench, that man could play at 39-40 easy. I don’t think we will drop off that much, though we should definetly try to woo Love or maybe Griffen. We get the right pieces and get some good draft picks we could be right back in the hunt.

by Warrior Spirit on Feb 20, 2011 11:49 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Latest story

is that Deron Williams wants to join the Knicks in 2012 (makes sense, I don’t think anyone gets the vibe that he wants to stay in Utah). Now that would be a serious team .
