Report: Deron to the Nets
Woj is reporting that Deron Williams has been traded to the Nets for Harris and Favors. For the Celtics this means they will play the new look Nuggets (Thursday) and new look Jazz (Monday) in the next few days, which should be to the C's benefit (but they did lose to the Thunder without Durant...).

Woah. Did not see that one coming.

neither did Deron
wonder if Sloan should have stuck around a little longer with D.Williams out of the picture
So exciting! I love this time of year
The Nets can’t be done, though. That’s your big move?? Now your whole team is a top-5 point guard and Robin Lopez….

I mean Brook Lopez

The difference is, Brook got the better basketball genes. Poor Robin.

huh?
yeah its the NBA’s fault and all a conspiracy for The Lakers? I mean, how? Ugh. The problems in Utah were all orchestrated to help The Lakers. Give me a break.

Deron to Nets???
D.Williams to the Nets. Either Williams or Utah were fed up. It seems like everybody is coming to the east. First, Melo-over- Drama and now Deron Williams.
Great deal for the Jazz
Although I wonder if they’ll keep Harris or move him along.
by egotistical ma on Feb 23, 2011 11:39 AM EST reply actions
how so?
They shipped out by far the best player in the deal for a lesser-PG and a rookie PF when they already have better players in Millsap, Al and AK that can play PF.
If Utah was moving Deron, they should have moved him for someone much better that actually fit a hole on that team like Wade or Bron.
by slamtheking on Feb 23, 2011 12:43 PM EST up reply actions
Doubt its their final move, they could easily make other moves now.

Agree
plus the two picks as well.
And Harris is not in DWill’s class, but he’s still a very good young PG.

woah - Harris is 29 already?
My bad. ’Seems like yesterday he was a rook … time flies for these guys stuck on bad teams.
So he’s not that young. But he’s still pretty good.

he stayed three years in college
and i guess thats part of the reason people might think he was younger. i myself am more impressed with the young lightning fast mavericks point guard than the nets player who made all star a couple years ago.

Jerry Sloan gonna come back now?
Wow. How often do you see a young, true franchise PG get traded like this, headstrong guy or not?
it's the Nets (Brooklyn?), that won't be a problem
won’t be long till he starts to butt heads with Avery Johnson
They overpaid.
Harris and Favors are up and comers. Favors could be a real force in this league some day. Plus two first round picks? Come on, Williams is good, but no that good.
"Phil is obviously a good coach. You don't win that many games without being a damn good coach, ... Remember one thing: He's been very fortunate. He picks his spots. That's all I can say." - Red Auerbach
Actually I think Harris is overrated, but could still improve, Favors hasnt proved anything yet. If you are gonna move Deron, you have to expect a lot.
by Warrior Spirit on Feb 23, 2011 12:10 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
No way
DWill is the second best PG in the league, a phenomenal player. Harris has peaked (and is about to be 29 y.o.), and though Favors could be great, you don’t hold on to potential when you can have reality. See the 2007 saga of the Celtics, Kevin Garnett, and All Jefferson. Great deal for the Nets.
When interviewed recently about his future with the Jazz, Deron answered with something very similar to what Carmelo said about a year ago about the Nuggets.
So maybe they (Jazz management) thought, why go through the Melo-drama thing again when you can trade him now. Just my two cents worth.

And no better place than NJ for the
guy who finally made Sloan quit.
Sloan
is old school and out of touch. His retirement had nothing to do with Williams and everything to do with not understanding the contemporary NBA.
Sloan is at an age where he probably
thought he didn’t need this bullshit anymore. And who was providing the bull? Deron. He was the final straw. And today’s NBA, oh so much better than the old NBA (hahahaha) where players get to run the league.
No question the Jazz were fed up with Deron
and man did they ever get a ton of talent for him so why not? A great move for them long term.
I love this time of season.
Especially in years like this one, when big trades seem to be in fashion.
But two first-round picks too? That’s an insanely bad deal for the Nets.
if they really got 2 picks too, that organization will do a nice job with those picks
Im really impressed. It takes some guts to make a move like that and they really made hay getting rid of a star that they obviously feel is a bit of a problem case.
You love it, Po.
You put your hands over your eyes but keep peeking out through your fingers—at celticsblog.com!
Not a bad deal for the C's, however: Keeps Williams away from the Knicks and blows up the Nets for the next 5 years.

I hope that they still want to move Murphy, though!
by sofutomygaha on Feb 23, 2011 12:15 PM EST up reply actions
Murphy has been moved to the Warriors
as part of the deal. The Warriors are giving up Gadzuric and Wright in exchange for Murphy’s expiring contract.
There is a strong possibility Murphy will then be bought out by GS.

is it weird that two teams trading away guys that could have walked at the end of their contracts
got boatloads of talent when they traded them instead? NY and NJ acted like they were the desperate ones. Guess you can tell which organizations have been historically better(Den/Utah)

Because of these player movements caused (directly or indirectly) by the player themselves, and/or the issues involving them..
I expect Dwight Howard to be shipped to some team out west a year before his contract expires. Unless of course they get lucky and win a title within that time frame.

He`ll make the same ORL-to-LA journey that Shaq did in 1996.
yeah, I'm getting that impression too
Mr. Smiley Face like the bright lights of Hollywood but he doesn’t have the same drive to win a ring, he’ll be dependent on Kobe
holy cow NJ couldn't even get an extension on his contract.
This is a historic mistake on their part. I haven’t been this shocked since the Gasol deal. It is incredible that he still gets to walk and they gave up a TON for him!
Not a mistake
They can’t get an extension b/c of his contract. Earliest he can get an extension is in July, which I’m sure they’ll try hard to get done.
Yeah with Portland’s injury woes, and Denver, Utah and Phoenix’s drastic team overhauls, only San Antonio, Dallas and OKCcan compete and okc is too young.

Warriors buy him out.
Heat/Celtics seem to be front runners to sign him.
Of course, Danny’s gotta find a way to open a roster spot first. 2 for 1 swap would be ideal.

Orlando has been pushing hard to bring in Zach Randolph.

if you were murphy, would you go to the celtics who want you for the bench and probably have a better chance this year, or to the Heat who desperately need you and may even have you start?
by sofutomygaha on Feb 23, 2011 12:34 PM EST up reply actions
are you sure?
We’re talking about slotting a productive 30 yo center behind Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Erick Dampier, both of whom are much older and have been pretty used to coming off the bench for the last few years.

I'd probably go with the Heat, if I am Murphy
Even if I am not starting, I’d have more playing time and have more chances to win a title in the future. Murphy is not that old to be that desperate anyway.

I will say Du-ron should be able to help Lopez score more down low

Raja Bell
Raja bell available?
Very managable salary about 3mil per season. 3 seasons left on his deal including this one which extends a little over Ainge’s end of the big three era. But a very managable and probably movable salary in the future.
Currently he is a little undersized for the 3 but is a great defender, and can back up pierce/Allen. Has covered Kobe/ Lebron in past.
That little lightbulb turned on in my brain too
Could be…?

Wait. does it mean we have to let go of one player if we buyout a new player?
Is it possible to just put Quis on the inactive list for the rest of the season and therefore not be included in the 15 man roster? That way, we just have to buyout whoever without giving up any on our roster?
No. But to free a roster spot we'd just buyout Quis' contract.
Assuming we don’t trade it to someone else to do that.

Its only the prorated value at this point
and even that is subject to the buyout negotiation (though I’d expect the Cs would pay full value to Daniels).
They’ve already spent over half that 5M at this point.

Lovely Trade
No hoopla, no Chris Minnix quashing rumors, no insiders, just a straight up trade. As a C’s fan who has no special interest in either the Jazz and the Nets, this is very refreshing!
I think
all of you people are crazy. The Nets just got a supreme player, and they got him for a declining PG and a handful of hope. It’s an incredible move on their part. Incredible.
There is no way NJ trades that much talent away ....
Unless there is at least an extension agreement…Gentleman’s agreement or otherwise in place.
I know they “can’t” do it…lol…But there is no way they trade away that much and get Boozered.
i strongly suspect
the nets dont know what theyr doing.
What talent?
An already third-tier guard who’s on the decline and a potential (in five years? ten?) all-star? For one of the best players on the planet and who plays the game’s most important position. It’s a no-brainer.
one of the best players on the planet?
thats a stretch. Im not sure id put him in the top ten. And utah could end up with a #1 pick this year even after making the playoffs.
That's crazy.
I mean, I don’t like the deal, but Williams is clearing in the top 10. No question about it.

well like i said, im not sure
i definitely wouldnt put him in the top 5.
I'd rate D-Will in the top 4-5 PGs, easy
but does that get him in the top 10 of players overall?
"We will take it easy, and walk on down our road at our pace with our focus ahead, and your focus on us." - Warrior Spirit, on what Celtics' Ubuntu is.
guys the nets DID NOT get an extension because they can't
so all they got is to rent him and start trying in July. For this they gave up picks, these are NETS picks to Utah, a decent enough point guard who im not going to defend because I don’t love him but he is ok and a recent all star and Favors who is already looking like he is a stud, excellent shot selection, doesn’t turn the ball over down low and plays decent d and is at least a decent rebounder, all at a tender age.
D will is a fine point guard but this was a ton to give up for him even if they got him to extend and they didn’t. I mean the owner had to have made this mistake….had to it had to be someone who is not a bb mind
I would tend to agree.
It was a hell of a lot to give up.
"We will take it easy, and walk on down our road at our pace with our focus ahead, and your focus on us." - Warrior Spirit, on what Celtics' Ubuntu is.
True, they cant resign
Assuming they dont resign him(and who really wants to play near that armpit/sweaty bum stench) then this is a colossal blunder.
I may over value Deron, and under value Harris/Favors, I do think they overpaid, but nit to an extreme amount. Again if they lose him however, they will fall apart even further. They will have to move to Brooklyn, guarantee help coming and throw the boat at him to get him to stay, IMO.

the nets traded an unprotected first round pick when their record is 17-40
And they also had to give up good young players. Prokhorov just got raked over the coals if you ask me.
This is crazy. Why do the Jazz need Favors, when they already have Jefferson, Millsap, and Okur?!
Sure, the unprotected first rounder will be a high pick, but who’s really out there in this year’s draft?
I'm assuming they are not done trading?

And another star heads east
Still cant believe that there are people put there that think the west is the better conference. IMO besides kobe, dirk(?), cp3 and KD, the west has no elite superstars left. They are all in the east. Maybe im missing a player or two, but still, seems like a no contest….the east has way more talent.

TRue but
U got teams like sacramento n the twolves that teams like the lakers play like 5 times a season. I understand we have the cavs but to me the whole “there r more +500 teams in the west” means nothing as to what conference has more legit contenders. For instance, last year four teams were talked about being champs:la, boston, cleveland, n orlando. 3 east to 1 west. This year, it basically was the same…just switch cleveland for miami. No one expected the spurs to be doing what they r doing so far this season. Also, no one on earth can deny that boston went to war against true top tier teams to get to the finals, while the lakers had a cake walk.

do you guys this will affect rajons status as an all-star
i know ultimately the politically correct answer is, screw the allstar games, its all about championships…but you gotta think that rondos gonna have to pick up his game quite a bit with dwill in the same conference….discuss
I dont care what the D.N.A. Says, the Guy wearing number 12 Cannot be Kirk Hinrich, he is definetly Kurt. Kirk can actually play basketball!
that's an interesting subplot
With the rise of John Wall and Chris Paul joining Melo and Amare, we will have all of the elite point guards in the east… except OF COURSE for Ricky Rubio!
Throw in the decline of the big 3 and the 20-teens aren’t going to be an easy decade for Rajon.

as long as he signs the extension
it’s a great move for the nets. i have no idea how often i had to read “superstars attract superstars” in the last couple of days. so now they have their superstar and they will soon move to brooklyn. plus the nets didn’t give up too much: a decent pg, a prospect who might become an allstar and two picks (and the next draft isn’t supposed to be that great in major talent).
if dwill doesn’t sign the extension…….well, shit happens.
So on this "point guard attracts free agents idea"
List of top point guards now who have attracted free agent signings lately:
1. Chris Paul……..uh
2. D Williams…….uh
3. We aren’t counting Wade are we…no
4. Nash…….uh
5. Kidd…..maybe they got a signing because of him
Im not thinking this idea works, and D Williams love to keep the ball
For a point guard...
like Deron, who hands out an average of 9+ assists and scores at a 20+ clip per game, I like the way he “keeps the ball.”
