Heat Will Pursue Perkins

More reason to want to crush Miami in the playoffs.  We already have to see Eddie House in a Heat uniform, now they want another piece of our team.

Marc Spears - NBA - Yahoo! Sports (h/t Red's Army)

One league source said the Miami Heat are expected to make a run at Boston Celtics center Kendrick Perkins(notes) after he becomes a free agent this summer, even though the Heat will be limited with what they can offer.

Perkins would be just the kind of guy that would fill in their gaping hole in the middle.  He doesn't need shots and he can change a game defensively.  Not to mention the fact that he's about the best Dwight Howard defender out there.

Still, I think the Celtics will be happy to match or beat most offers, especially if a team like the Heat only has the Mid Level Exception (or whatever the equivalent will be in the new CBA) to offer.

I don't know about you, but Perkins looks better to me than he did for half of last year - which is further proof that he wasn't 100% healthy last year.  He picked a good time to get healthy too.  I'm sure he's going to cash in this offseason but I'm also pretty sure he'll do it in Boston.

Danny better do the right thing and give Perk an extension before he hits free agency or we are going to lose him. There are no doubts that Perk is back from the injury. He is also so much more important to this team than his stats show. It would kill me if Danny lets Perk go. Danny…. Get it done!!!!!

Perk is a BEAST!!

I agree. Sign him before he hits the market.

I don’t know how Perkins can look good to anyone right now. He has absolutely no lift in his legs. It’s good that his game is build around strength and not high-flying, but he still has ways to go before he’s back to his pre-injury shape.

by kozlodoev on Feb 5, 2011 2:41 PM EST reply actions

Hes playing probably better than last year, he’s getting far more off. boards than last, the way he crashes the glass this year is phenomenal, especially for someone coming off an ACL tear

Right, 7.8 in 24 minutes as compared to 7.6 in 27.5 minutes last season. He’s not rebounding that much better than last year, and he certainly doesn’t look phenomenal, especially given that he’s blocked a total of 1 shot in six games.

He’ll be fine, but everyone is being a bit over the top here.

by kozlodoev on Feb 5, 2011 11:36 PM EST up reply actions

perk never had any lift

perk never had any lift thats why he looks the same we don’t no if hes in pain as well he looks content wwith his leg anyway perk is struggling to dunk it and technically hes always hurt us offensively but he brings so much to the table offensively so i say wait hes a guy tht can average 2bpg quite easily and 10 or 11 boards

by Tai_chi on Feb 6, 2011 5:08 AM EST up reply actions

lol agree

hes getting his shot blocked at will even by guards but right now he has no lift and is kinda out of basketball shape. another 10 15 games he will be ok. he looks good as far as body shape but on the court it not there yet. just his presence makes a difference, he can still rebound but legs are not there.

by 18champs on Feb 5, 2011 3:28 PM EST reply actions

I agree

But, still think perk is worth a lot moving forward. Once kg retires, having that type of communicator on the defensive end is worth a lot in spite of his limitations offensively. Plus he has been on a very team friendly contract this time, so as the other contracts come off the books, I think he has earned a little more for himself. I would definatley prioritize perk over baby. His leg will only continue to improve.

i see it like this

If we dont sign perkins, I c we get howard because, i dont see perkins doing so well without the big 3 when there gone. As in joking wise!?!? Rivers said hes gonna put all 4 at the same time. So which means hes gonna put howard with them cuz hes the closet free agent. But Can you just imagine howard on a green uniform playing with kg, pierce, ray on there last years. Then Kg telling howard stop messing around and be tuff. Cuz i dont wanna wait again and be all depress when the c’s are not good. Thats when the clinic and superman will take over the C’s. Anything is possibls!!! Im gonna pray for that big time.

we'll just have to wait and see

with the lockout, it may not even be a problem. But DA is a genius when it comes to paying free agents what they are worth (JO aside). With the CBA as it is now, I see him as $8 million a year player. But there’s no telling what it might be next season.

just can't see perkins with the "brady bunch" boys...

all that lovey-dovey friendship building nonsense, I can’t see it from Perk

by JunkyardDawg on Feb 5, 2011 5:02 PM EST reply actions

cashing in is a relative term

perk is not a dominant scorer…or a good scorer. and he’s coming off a torn knee. i think the most teams would offer is multiple years at the MLE or slightly above. i see almost no chance of perk not being a lifer, or at least an almost-lifer in boston. so long as teams aren’t offering him $10m or higher per year, i see him in boston green next year.

by guy incognito on Feb 5, 2011 5:08 PM EST reply actions

The great thing is that...

The heat can only offer him the MLE, And As long as DA is sane he will match it. plus he would be smart to extend Perk, he can be a very valuable trade chip. OKC, Clips, Houston, could all use a young center and all have great assets and picks.
I really think that with the progression we are seeing from Semih, one day he can be a quality starting center in the NBA. All he needs to do is work on his D and get a killer instinct.

by businessbmw on Feb 5, 2011 5:09 PM EST reply actions

What's the concern?

I don’t get it. He’s not going to the Heat, period. I don’t understand why anyone would even be remotely concerned about that idea. He already has a ring (and hopefully a second by this summer), so the idea of taking less money to play with LeBron and Co. isn’t going to appeal to him.

Furthermore, at his age, he’s going to be looking to make the most money possible. If Danny beats the MLE offer, it won’t be a problem. And he will do that.

The only concern is some crappy team will come around and offer him a ton of cash. But I don’t really see that happening either. Perkins isn’t going to make a bad team a title contender and if teams are going to have even less money to play with, no one is going to spend big bucks on him.

Another quick thought while we’re on the topic, the new CBA could be the best thing to ever happen to the Celtics. I’d love to see the MLE eliminated. It would kill Miami’s chances of winning a title in the near future and would hurt any team that still needs more pieces. It wouldn’t hurt us, though, since we have everything in place.

And by the time the Big Three retire, it’ll be easier to rebuild as the good teams won’t be able to hoard good players (like we’ve done).

id be more worried about teams with money

knowing ainge he has a set dollar amount he doesnt want to go over for perkins as he did with both rondo and davis. i mean what if a team like the blazers (who may have as much as $20m available + MLE) offer him $8-10m?

i agree though, working out a deal with perkins before the end of the season would be smart but i think perkins has ideas of testing the market and maximizing his value

we all love perk because he’s ours. when it comes time to do business both danny and perk will do what.s in their best interests. if danny doesn’t want him, i think he’ll trade him before the contract is up. if no trade , danny will try to keep him. perk is a good soldier but no savior.

a no brainer

anything must be done to stop the Heatles and evil Riley

by gocanes1 on Feb 5, 2011 7:20 PM EST reply actions

Sign and Trade?

Maybe we can do a sign & trade involving 3 teams that also involves Dallas. Do you guys think getting Brendan Haywood is better than Perk? I would guess the Mavs don’t need him as a high priced back up with Tyson Chandler already set as the starting Center.

by LarryBird33 on Feb 5, 2011 8:29 PM EST reply actions

The only way I'll accept losing Perk

Is if we somehow get Dwight Howard in return after he hits free agency.

C's need Perk...

As the aging bigs of KG, Shaq and J.O. Perk is the only legit big the C’s can build around fo the future, so I do not think Ainge will let Perk get away unless he can get something in return for Perk from another team via a sign and trade etc.

So I am not too worried.

Hey Sternleone... how about all the Collusion that went down last year?

How about not letting the Heat get away with that sh*t again…. talk about asleep at the godfather convention….

Perk is a team player how does that ever fit with what Miami does?

by David Henderson on Feb 6, 2011 10:42 AM EST reply actions

Isnt it illegal to talk about another team’s player. Didn’t Cuban and others get large fines for the same thing or less last year?

by Warrior Spirit on Feb 6, 2011 12:12 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I don't think DA let him go

Most probably D Howard is not coming to Boston, so we really need Perk, he said it before he wants more money and he used Haywood example, please dont go to the most heated team in NBA history, cHeat.

by greenSanDiego on Feb 6, 2011 11:04 AM EST reply actions

Please God No. I want to continue liking Perk.

I honestly think Danny gets it done.

by Warrior Spirit on Feb 6, 2011 12:10 PM EST via mobile reply actions

perk is our future .

once the big 3 are gone the celtics have to build around perk , rondo and baby davis its a no brainer sign perk now or we will be doomed for the future .
