"I don't think I'm gonna be 100 percent at all this year," he added. "I've been told that the wrist is gonna take another six months to recover, still don't have rotation. The ankle is a little sore, but no more sore than any other player is playing with right now."

Regardless of Delontes health, I like both pickups alot.

Imagine if we waited all year for all these guys to get healthy. Avery would be getting some serious experience right now:P

west isn't worth the trouble anymore

I’ve had it with him, jermaine, sahq etc. next year we need to get younger and healthier. the last 3 years have been the same with injuries. We need some young studs for our front court and unfortunatley it’s starting to look like we may need a new PG. I don’t know why it’s so hard for this team to stay healthy but man we sure have been snake bit. At least we got the one title cuz it sure doesn’t look like we’re winning another with this group

by Red2 on Mar 16, 2011 9:40 AM EDT reply actions

Really?

We have one of the top 4 point guards in the league by just about anyone’s judgement. And he’s young and has improved his game every year he has played. Playing hurt and playing 40 plus minutes per game has worm him down. This hardly necessitates his being traded. And traded for whom? Really…who fits better with this team than a point guard who doesn’t care how many points he scores? No one on this board likes injuries but we have kept on going despite them. We sit in a much better seat than we did last year when we came within a heartbeat of winning it all.

out of all the celtics, i think delonte is the guy i would least want to have a fistfight with, somehow. troy murphy, conversely, is the one i would most want to be pitted against. either way i’m pretty sure i’d be down and out within ten seconds.

by Mooose on Mar 16, 2011 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Let us know if you set up anything on pay per view.

Just so you know, I remember seeing something of Troy Murphy’s mean side. There is one, and I wouldn’t play it down. So I’m guessing you’d sustain less damage going up against Avery Bradley.

by no kidding on Mar 16, 2011 6:23 PM EDT up reply actions

It will be nice to see Delonte return ...

It will be very intresting to see him paired with Carlos in the backcourt coming off the bench as a duo.

In regards to Wests and the teams nagging injuries overall:.

With the regular season winding down and the playoffs just around the corner time will soon run out to allow players to rest and heal from there various injuries in hopes of getting them 100%.

All injured players be it West, Shaq , J.O., Baby or Rondo will have to suck it up and play with there injuries even if they can not be 100%.

If Kevin Mchale could suck it up and play at less then 100% with a broken foot in the 1987 season and still helped the C’s almost win a title, there is no reason for any current player on the roster (who from what we know do not have as severe a injury as Mchale had) not to do the same.

by fordescort on Mar 16, 2011 10:28 AM EDT reply actions

What we can't afford to do is sit Sasha or Arroyo when Delonte returns.

The chances are too great they’ll be our functional bodies through the playoffs and they still have to get adjusted to the team.

by clover on Mar 16, 2011 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Even with Delonte back...

I assume Doc will want to give Rondo and Pierce some extra rest in the final portion of the season so he may just give Sasha and Arroyo extra minutes to allow them to get acclimated to the C’s system.

by fordescort on Mar 16, 2011 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

And don’t even bring up Willis Reed.

by johnnymost on Mar 16, 2011 10:30 AM EDT reply actions

Ok, What is the word with Shaq?

He did a nice thing visiting the elderly center on Monday. Now we need him to visit the Celtics locker room and put on a game jersey. 17 games for this team to find a rhythm and be healthy for the playoffs.

by JPV on Mar 16, 2011 10:30 AM EDT reply actions

Last I heard...

He wants to play now and is for getting a steroid injection to help his sore Achilles, but the big 3 and Doc are urging him to sit and rest as long as possible 1st.

Glad to see that they’re not rushing him back.

by braz on Mar 16, 2011 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Agree...

but I wonder when he returns.

Are the C’s going to bring him back for the last week of the regular season to get some games under his belt prior to the playoffs?

Or will the C’s maybe let him have the 1st round of the playoffs off also to get some extra healing time and bring him back for the 2nd round?

by fordescort on Mar 16, 2011 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

I think so...

Id like to see Shaq back preferably the last couple of weeks of the season…but will his injury(s) allow him to is the big question???

by fordescort on Mar 16, 2011 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Shaq?

Of course. And he’ll probably get those.

by Tai on Mar 16, 2011 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

i know i’d sure like to see him back for at least a half dozen reg season games, but i don’t know how essential it is. do we expect shaq to be used in many other lineups other than the ones he’s been in already this season (plus or minus a new guy). perhaps the celts vets are thinking that shaq knows pretty much what he needs to at this point, and that game shape is really the only concern with him

by Mooose on Mar 16, 2011 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes...

like I said above that was the last update I heard on Shaq.

by fordescort on Mar 16, 2011 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions

i am unsold on delonte

never really liked this pickup.
recent signings make deltone less relevant

by Snowball on Mar 16, 2011 10:31 AM EDT reply actions

At first, I loved the signing and I love West on this team.

But with the injuries and the trades, our needs have evolved to another center. If Shaq and JO are not ready, then we have one true center and Baby. That will not get it down against Howard and Bynum, guys like Wade and Rose will penetrate repeatedly, something we need for Rondo to do a lot more of. So I agree that West is not a key piece now.

by JPV on Mar 16, 2011 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Delonte is better than those guys

So while we may not be able to rely on him not getting hurt again, we may actually need him to get over the hump.

by droopdog7 on Mar 16, 2011 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Delonte and the O'Neals will be a pleasant surprise at this point.

Take out Bradley and we’ve got an 11-man rotation.

I want all the new guys, including Sasha and Murphy, to get plenty of burn ramping up to the playoffs, cause they’re likely the players we’ll have.

by clover on Mar 16, 2011 10:58 AM EDT reply actions

If these are the players they are going to have

Then getting out of the second round will be a pleasant surprise. This team is going nowhere without Shaq/JO and a close to healthy Delonte.

by vinnie on Mar 16, 2011 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm sure

we could find a similar post from last year around this time

by McHaleinthepost on Mar 16, 2011 12:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Did you read the post I was responding to?

The poster says that he is not expecting anything from Delonte West and the two O’Neals, and if they contribute, that will be a surprise. My response is that if they do not have those players, this team will be lucky to get out of the second round. I just can’t see a center rotation of Krstic and Glen Davis getting it done. Call me crazy, I guess.

by vinnie on Mar 16, 2011 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree...

To get deep in the playoffs and have there best shot at banner 18 the C’s need Shaq for sure, Jermaine preferably as well along with Delonte all healthy.

by fordescort on Mar 16, 2011 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions

No matter whom we end up with by May

I want the 5 new guys comfortable with our system. That means plenty of time in the next 15 games for Murphy and Sasha and Carlos and…

by clover on Mar 16, 2011 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

This sums up my issue with blowing up half the team 2/3 into the season

Simply not enough time to get all of these guys ready and completely worked into the Celtics system. Hopefully Shaq and Delonte come back and we don’t have to worry to much about Murphy, Sasha and Carlos playing important minutes.

by vinnie on Mar 16, 2011 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions

if your concern is about the health of the roster

how would holding on to Nate (out), Daniels (out) and Semih (probably should just stop and have surgery on that shoulder finally) have helped with the depth?

And Perk is no guarantee to stay any healthier through the playoffs than Shaq or JO at this point.

BECAUSE we ‘blew up half the team’, we have 5 healthy bodies (Green, Krstic, Pavlovic, Arroyo and Murphy) instead of 1 and a half (’Gody & Perk). Yes, they are still new and the team is going to to be a few more weeks before they are fully integrated, but they are all good players and healthy and the remaining games should be plenty of time to get ready for the playoffs.

by mmmmm on Mar 16, 2011 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Perk at least is playing again

And my main concern is integrating all the ne guys in a short time.

by vinnie on Mar 16, 2011 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Remember, you're talking about the bench.

We have our starters, our system, and everybody knows their roles for the bulk of the minutes. Now we just need a few veterans to sort themselves out on the bench. It’s not that big a deal.

As for Shaq, he’ll probably be fully adjusted back into the scheme of things in the middle of the first playoff series.

by no kidding on Mar 16, 2011 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

That still doesn't mean that...

…he won’t help us. He had some good games before the ankle injury, which was AFTER the broken wrist. Everybody is aching right now, but that still doesn’t mean that we can’t expect solid games out of him. He will do just fine.

by P2 on Mar 16, 2011 11:21 AM EDT reply actions

Obviously this isn't encouraging

But I still hold out hope that Delonte can be a solid contributor off the bench for the Celtics. In my estimation he’s somewhat of an X-Factor when healthy because he really foil the Rondo sagging defense and he’s just a heady all around player. I’d say if West, Shaq, and JO can get and stay healthy that the Celtics are nearly a lock to win the Championship.

by IanMello on Mar 16, 2011 12:11 PM EDT reply actions

Just confirms my mantra this season

This team will never be fully healthy and needs to be at least 90 percent healthy, including a Shaq who can play 20-25 minutes a game, to have a chance at the championship. Is Shaq still on the team? Has not been on the court for 7 weeks — LOL.

by vinnie on Mar 16, 2011 12:30 PM EDT reply actions

7 weeks is a lot of time, really.

They usually say at this point in the season, no one is really healthy. I would realy want the O’neals to come back and help this team with the remaining season games. Not only do they need to jell but standings do matter and no one is really “meant to help win a championship in June” and not contribute the regular season. I know injuries happen but eeeish!!!

Do we have both O’neals on the books for next season too?

by missyP on Mar 16, 2011 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Shaq's a warrior and he's out there through the playoffs no matter what.

I just hope he’ll be healthy enough to be effective. I don’t know what to make of JO and I just worry about Delonte snapping another bone or something.

by clover on Mar 16, 2011 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

As I see it

Delonte: tough season, but I absolutely think he can and will help us in the stretch run and through the playoffs, even if injured. He’s a very smart and tough player and will play through the pain.

Shaq: Achilles pain obviously isn’t going away but this is his swan song and with multiple injections to mask it, he’ll give us everything he can in the playoffs. Fortunately, I don’t see his game suffering all that much with the long layoff.

Rondo: he’s clearly banged up and that’s why his performance has suffered, but he’s also thinking about preserving his body for the grind of the playoffs. Tough to see him look so ordinary out there, but he’ll be ready when it matters.

JO: I don’t see him coming out of the tunnel. If he does, great, but I just can’t imagine him coming back this late and being effective. If he can give us any low post D in the playoffs that would be a huge bonus.

Bottom line: These guys will suck it up, knowing this is the last chance for banner #18, and I believe that they’ll do it. Yes, I bleed green but so be it!

by McHaleinthepost on Mar 16, 2011 12:33 PM EDT reply actions

If he does not come out of the tunnel,

that leaves us with Shaq and Krstic in the middle. If Shaq comes up gimpy at all in the playoffs, that leaves Krstic and Davis. Murphy is not a center. So………either DA is absoultely confident JO will be back, or he is taking a hell of a gamble.

by JPV on Mar 16, 2011 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, didn't you hear? He is going to miss 1-2 games with a minor injury.

Of course, that is 1-2 games in Celtics’ language, which in Shaq’s case translates to 7 weeks, while in other cases it can translate to anywhere from 2-4 weeks.

by vinnie on Mar 16, 2011 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Ha! So true.

But he really looked to hurt his calf badly when it happened.

by clover on Mar 16, 2011 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Last time Doc was asked about Von, this is what he said:

“Von’s going to be out for a while,” said Rivers. “It’s not torn, I don’t know what the actual injury is, but he’s going to be out for quite a while.”

Pressed if that meant potentially the rest of the regular season, Rivers added: “No, he’ll return. But it’ll be two weeks, maybe three. Maybe longer.”

by ejk3489 on Mar 16, 2011 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

…maybe in 2 years, maybe never." Asked what Rivers thinks of the team’s current seed, he replied, “I don’t even know our record.”

Really, he don’t know s***!

by Big_Easy on Mar 16, 2011 12:51 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

It all comes down to Shaq and JO being at least 80% effective...

We`ll see if Danny`s mid-season gamble was worth it but, right now, it`s not looking good.

by Title 18 on Mar 16, 2011 1:41 PM EDT reply actions

Not necessarily

Had Ainge not made this move, we also could be concerned about Pierce’s minutes and playoff stamina.
Cuts both ways.

by Big_Easy on Mar 16, 2011 1:50 PM EDT reply actions

Dudes, think if we now would have Perk ant Nate. Perk is injured and won’t be effective in playoffs. Nate won’t play 4 weeks.

I’m glad we traded them. Anyone agrees?

by Effect on Mar 16, 2011 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed!!!!

Can anyone say we are worse off now than if we had no back ups for Pierce, Allen and Rondo who all had to be playing extra minutes as we headed into the playoffs? We’ve lost 3 out of 4. It stinks BUT it’s not the end of the world.

Celtics media

I wrote a forum post on this a week or two ago, but the local media has done a terrible job covering the C’s this year. If I’m a beat reporter for the Celtics, I know the loyal fans waited 22 years between titles, and I relish the opportunity to cover the team in this period where they’re contending every year.

How in the world aren’t there more injury updates on all of these guys? As a few people said above, IF we have everyone (or at least the right guys) healthy, I see us as a virtual lock to win the title.

So knowing that the fate of our entire season (and quite possibly the Big 3 Era) hinges on the health of Shaq, Delonte, JO, and Von, wouldn’t any legit reporter be focusing on this at least several times a week, and giving constant updates?

Even if it annoys Doc and Danny, it’s still the reporter’s responsibility to his readers to inform them of such important issues.

Very frustrating as a fan!

by the TRUTH on Mar 16, 2011 4:23 PM EDT reply actions

I feel your pain..

It is frustrating that the media has not been able to provide us fans with more details or updates about injuries this year to Celtic players especially Shaq and J.O.

But to cut the media some slack the lack of info is not all the medias fault and probably has more to do with the C’s wanting at times to keep public injury updates on players at a minimum.
