Should Cs have signed Leon Powe instead of Troy Murphy?

I'm beginning to think that the celtics should have signed Leon Powe instead of Murphy. Murphy has given us absolutely nothing so far. He has never been on a good team and perhaps there is a reason for that. When I watch him play he lacks that it factor that hustle that we saw from Leon when he and his Grizzles came to town. Leon will battle with anyone inside and we could use that. We could use his toughness rather than the non-existent three point shooting of Troy Murphy. Leon Powe is a fan favorite who could have helped this team.

I think the Celtics

thought Powe would be a injury prone player. They saw Murphy who could be a solid guy on the boards and some scoring. They maybe fell in love with his past career days in GSW/PACERS. I guess at this point we know why Avery Johnson didn’t play him. It could be bad luck the ankle injury, and it stopped his progress on getting his game legs back.

no man def troy murphy you look at the seasons both players had previous to this and you go with troy murphy everytime he could ball just a shame he can’t play anymore

in hindsight, yes

but everyone thought that Leon Powe would be DOA, that his knees were shot, and might never play on a high caliber again. Troy Murphy on the other hand seemed fine physically, but just stuck on a team with a coach who didn’t care for him.

If we had it to do over again, we should of signed Powe, but nobody really thought that Murphy would be this underwhelming.

I don’t see us paying for Big Baby this summer, so perhaps we can resign Powe.

I agree with the first part

but the question still remains: How long will Leon’s knees hold up?

Yes, but as mentioned, hindsight is 20-20.

Murphy

Had played 25 games before coming to the Celtics… he’s in shape but not basketball shape… you have yet to see the true Troy Murphy

I hope you're right.

But I’m running out of patience there.

Correction: I’m out of patience. My patience window expired at 10 games in a Celtics uniform. I have officially declared him legally dead, let’s hope for a resurrection.

As Tito says, "Do your homework!"

Uhhh, Powe did not want to come to Boston. Do some research. The C’s didn’t have a choice.

I think you should take your own advice my friend. No offense or anything.

But read this one:

http://www.necn.com/02/25/11/Leon-Powe-waived-by-Cavs-open-to-Celtics/landing_sports.html?blockID=427423&feedID=3352

If you’re too lazy to do that, here’s the best part of it for you:

“I’ll be happy wherever I end up, but Boston is always holding a special place in my heart,” Powe told CSNNE.com on Thursday evening. “The fans were so good to me, everybody up there was so nice, and it would be a great thing to return back to the Celtics if I could.”

Guys you fail to realize that if we hadn't signed Troy Murphy

The Heat would have signed him. Just having him on the team is enough.

by ZM15 on Apr 4, 2011 7:18 PM EDT reply actions

This^.

Hindsight is great, but very few people could have predicted Powe’s current level of play. And who knows how long his current set of knees will last?

As far as Murphy goes, as you point out, just keeping him from Miami has value. Odds are that he would have contributed far more minutes to their rotation and who knows? Maybe helped them win a game or two?

At this point, he’s just deep bench insurance behind Shaq, KG, JO, BBD & Krstic. Powe would not likely crack that lineup for any minutes in the playoffs either. BBD has the advantage of being so integrated with the C’s at this point and the others all have significant length advantages over Leon.

I’m glad he’s playing well for the Grizzlies, though. I hope his legs hold out. Great guy who deserves some good health karma.

Lets look at two aspects of the signing. First we kept Murphy away from Miami. Miami’s bench is awful, it very likely he would be in the playoff rotation for the heat. Everybody talks about Leon and his injuries which definitely factored in to the decision not to sign him. Leon has played well offensively for Memphis but has really not been much of factor on the glass. Let’s not forget Leon is only 6’8. Murphy has shown me little in his time with the Celtics. Leon would not be in the rotation off the bench baby is going to play center at times but mostly back up kg. The second unit in the postseason will consist of kristic, baby green, delonte and a starter from the big four. Murphy at 6’11 has show the ability to rebound the basketball and I believe he will help the team in certain spots during the post season like a pj brown. If the Celtics get to the finals they will need to compete with the lakers length, he will be a factor.

Ummm it's not even close...

Without question we should have signed Leon instead.

Miami can have Murphy.

by incoherent. on Apr 4, 2011 11:09 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

obviously Murphy is not the player we thought he was...

He hasn’t played in to long. His jump shot is not there yet and either is his conditioning. If Miami got him he would not have made a difference for them. He’s not the difference maker everyone thought he could be no matter what team he is on.

Monday Morning Quarterbacking

Monday morning quarterbacking is always foolproof. We we ready to kill for Murphy until we got him. Shouldnt we have gotten Powe instead of Shak? S.O.S.O.S.
