Fun With The Free Agent List
The act of guessing who the Celtics will sign this offseason is virtually pointless this early in the game. First of all the playoffs aren't even done yet. Secondly, we haven't even had the draft yet (so team needs haven't really been solidified). Finally, and most importantly, we don't know what the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) will look like so we have no clue what we can afford.
With that as the backdrop, all I can do is take a look down the free agent list and have some fun with it.
Familiar Faces: Hey, I know that guy!
- Brian Scalabrine - I actually do want to see him signed, ...as an assistant coach.
- Leon Powe - looked good against us that one game
- Marquis Daniels - not sure what his status is health-wise
- Shelden Williams - no
- Tony Battie & Marcus Banks - wait, they are still in the league?
- Sebastian Telfair & Theo Ratliff - thanks for helping us get KG!
- Yi Jianlian - never a Celtic (thankfully), but Danny always liked him (for some reason)
Old And Busted: If Danny wants to roll the dice on old and injured players again, he'll have plenty of big name choices! I'd actually take a flyer on any one of these guys at the right price and on a non-guaranteed deal. We just can't fill up the roster with them (see Shaq).

2011 Draft.
Free agent yeah…
What abotu 2011Draft?
I would love to somehow draft these this year:
Donatas Motiejunas PF.
Jonas Valanciunas C.
They are both Lithuanians. I am from Lithuania too, and I know them very well. Valanciunas has so much potential to became NBA Star , he is only 18years old there is no player who could match at his age. and look how he is playing in Euroleague (of course he needs to gain more muscle during the offseason).
KG could teach him so much.
Motiejunas would be best option to change BBD.
And if lockout happens there is option for them to stay in the Europe one more year and come to nba only in 2012.
Looks like you guys have some good players in the draft this year--
The Year of the Lithuanian!
Unfortunately DraftExpress has them projected to go at 4 and 9, while the C’s don’t pick until 25.
draft express always has overseas players drafted high
but teams have a habit of drafting them in the low 20’s and 30’s, Rubio and Fernandez (by Orlando) were the two highest drafted in recent years and they stayed overseas so far
Ainge also has a habit of not drafting overseas guys with Erden being a recent exception, maybe he’ll change his mind, who knows?
pretty weak draft
alot of the good players in this draft are from overseas.
if one of them drops to us id be thrilled if we got one of them.
i also like a 6’7 euro SG by the name bojan bogdanovic and if we could land him in the 2nd round im be thrilled as well. we would likely have to trade up in either case.

I m his countryman
And am actually watching him play at this moment. I don’t think he ll ever be celtic good, best we could hope for would be spot up kyle Korver type of shooter, which weaker % and bit better penetration.
YESSSS!!! But I insist.... Buy or trade a early 2RP and draft bigs!

Jeremy Tyler = http://swishscout.com/?page_id=5135
Jordan Williams = http://swishscout.com/?page_id=4335
i like michael dunigan
young kid with soft hands who plays back to the basket. yes, a traditional center.
he’s 6’10, 250 and he needs work on offense but he’s what we need. he gets to the foul line alot too, something else we need.

CENTER
remove all the third strings and get us a decent, WALKING center that can play 82+ games
Alas,
Yao is probably on his last let. Although, If I could take any of those players healthy, it would most certainly be Yao.

Danny`s reputation is that he can spot talent...Not so sure that it`s deserved!
He`s given us Scal…Banks…Telfair…Shelden
He wanted to give us Yi…R. Swift
JR Giddens, Bill Walker, Lester Hudson, Mikey Moore, Starberry,
Luke (who seemed to have energy & hustle traded for nothing), Semih (had some skills traded for nothing)….Unless you want to consider they were traded for 2 open slots for Sasha & Troy.
Vin Baker..Jiri Welsch..Mihm..Dickau..Olowokandi..Allan Ray
Throwing a huge contract at Mark Blount!
Shopping Ray........A genius non trade
The pride of the outstanding moves in 08 should be waning now. Humility is always beautiful.
If you think about the current situation. It would be better to let Doc make the picks or let Doc trade the picks so that Doc gets someone, anyone, who he will play to give the older guys a REAL, legitimate break. Like it or not, those guys need MORE rest.
Doc loves vets. They should probably trade picks for ONE guy who Doc loves & will allow on the court so that the starters can take longer breaks. They need longer breaks so they can finish the 4th quarter with greater strength & energy.
Quis
I would love to see Quis back. Not sure how the team would deal with the emotions, if he goes down again.
I read somewhere, that according to McGrady, the Celtics’ biggest loss was Quis with his bluecollar no-bull attitude. I think he was right. He was such a big factor for the bench.
He says on his twitter account that he is on the track to getting healthy and plans to play next season.

imo
I think the only way we get someone that’s a impact is if we move our expiring deals n picks via trade n hope we can resign em via buyout if da new Cba allows it but I like petrus, battier, Landry, & Greg oden if he can finally be healthy for once in his life he’d be a steal

Will prolly come cheap though.
So if we did sign him cheap, we could also have a shot at peitrus or battier, both great on D. and we’d need a backup for KG. NOT BBD

Just an observation...
Leon Powe, Tony Allen, Brian Scalabrine, Eddie House, Kendrick Perkins…all these former 2008 Celtics NBA Finals Champs that were either traded or not given a new contract…are now on the verge of winning a 2nd NBA title. I wonder how KG, Pierce, Allen and Rondo are feeling about that.
Call it like it is…Perk and Tony have a shot to win it. Leon, Eddie, and Brian have a chance to sit on the bench and watch other guys (Randolph, Lebron, Rose) win it for them.
Boston Celtics - the school of champions!
Neither of those five were instrumental in bringing the championship to Boston in 2008. But especially Perkins and Allen have grown a lot since then, and much of it thanks to playing with The Big Three and Rondo in the following two seasons.

Samuel Dalembert, J.R.Smith, and Hamed Haddadi
Dalembert iand J.R. are unrestricted free agents and Haddadi(from Memphis) is a restricted free agent. Dalembert and Haddadi would give us an extremely solid center rotation and J.R. Smith would give us the explosive scorer we needed against the Heat. With these three guys along with keeping Green, West, and Von Wafer I think we can compete for the title next year.
dalembert said he wants to play for heat.
DONT WANT THAT. plus his shot blocking and reboundign would help us. if he wants to be on a contender, he will need to take the MLE because i dont think any have cap space

We need some bench guys.....
That can play starter minutes, and be sucessful. Green is a good start. I think resigning West is a must. Both of those guys are talented enough, and young enough, to help rest our aging core.
Outside of that, I’d look for more youth, and offense. The Celts play great defense b/c they play it well as a team, not b/c the team is stacked with individually great defenders (outside of KG, and possibly Rondo). Find some guys that can score the basketball, and teach them how to play team defense.
Burn that list other than
Tyson Chandler
The rest of that list we should stay away from.
I would love to see Leon and Pietrus on this team
But, my suggestion to Danny is: Whatever you have to say to Tony to make him wanna come back, do it. Trade, if it takes, 10 players through the league to get him back.
Also, Chandler is probably more impossible to get than Dwight, but with either of those two we’d be mega-unstoppable meat (or Heat) grinding machine.
However, Krstic is gonna have a year of preps for the next playoffs, Delonte is just amazing, Green will probably average more minutes than Pierce this year, but I don’t like how Davis disappeared in the playoffs, so who cares what he’ll to in regular season again. Add Tony to that list and 2nd team is pretty much better than 90% of first teams out there.
Irresponsible I stand...
Guys I Want
Itd be great to snatch up chandler, but i doubt we can afford him unless he’d take mid-level. Which i doubt. But Dalembert would be a great grab as well. And honestly, id give Oden a shot to start over if his contract wasnt a killer. But it probably would be.
As far as the draft goes, i would do this: trade up in the 1st to like 20 and grab Kenneth Faried. Trade up again in 2nd round and then grab Marshon Brooks. Both seem like great fits. If Danny stays put at 25, we’re probably looking at Jajuan Johnson or Shelvin Mack. And I’d be happy with either.
But I really want Faried.
P2 is the man.
You know, speaking of draft
It’s been a while since we drafted and schooled a player. How about we pick up someone who’s good on D, and introduce him to systems and plays at some faster rate, due to not-having-to-learn-D-from-scratch.
Irresponsible I stand...
Thats exactly why Faried would be a great pick
really good defender, he blocks shots despite being undersized.
Think big baby’s height, but he can actually dunk and block shots. Also unlike baby, he has long arms that help him defensively. Just a solid energy guy that would be great on the second unit grabbing offensive boards and keeping plays alive. He doesn’t give you a lot of one-on-one scoring, but with Green, Kristic, and West (assuming they all stay) on the second unit, how much offense do you need?
Also give him a year under KG and there is no telling how much he can learn. No character issues either as far as I know…
Can you tell I want this guy in green? lol
P2 is the man.
I'd love Faried too
He’s definitely an offensive liability, however, and he’s only 6-8. If he were available at #25, I wouldn’t object to taking him, but he’s not worth trading up for. And even if he were available, I’d still prefer Jajuan Johnson (assuming he was available.) He’s ready to contribute on day 1, plays good defense, can rebound, and can score. He’s a hard worker, and improved his game every year. (increased his FT% from 65% to 81%, improved his jump shot, added a 3-point shot, although he can leave that at Purdue in my opinion.)
My favorite Jajuan Johnson stat tho: This year he had 79 blocks and only 53 fouls.

Having KG as a coach
I’d rather have new 3 or 2 on the team, or even 5. We all know how much KG likes new guys, especially new guys who don’t listen.
Sounds like a good catch, then. I know only one player from the draft list anyway (Jan Vesely). We need a rebounder now that Perk is traded and Sheed isn’t there to sub for him! ;)

He’ll be more likely to get $10 million+ per year, and I really doubt he leaves Dallas.

Chandler loves where hes at right now, they went further than us in the Playoffs why leave?
I’d pick up Sammy D, and Nick Young(maybe even long term). and for a cheap price I’d risk picking up Oden, I’d think of it like a coin toss, heads he gets busted again and we release him on wavers lol, tails he gets healthy and plays almost like a #1 draft pick…. well ok maybe not that much of an upside but hes huge and young and should be cheap, you get the point. Carl Landry can replace Baby, i don’t expect him to be on the roster next year.
Don’t forget we also have the Clippers’ 1st round draft pick, its gonna be a good one, even if its lottery protected. best case scenario 11th pick trade that and our pick maybe even a player to get into the top 5 picks maybe? or shall we hold this stunt till next year and try to get Austin Rivers!! so both Danny and Doc can have their kids with the C’s
I'd like Ainge to find a young athletic power forward, who's been in the league a couple of years, but who just hasn't found enough playing time on the team he's been with.
Derrick Brown, who’s now a restricted free agent with the Knicks (but spent most of his time with Charlotte), might be that kind of guy. Somebody like him is out there and ready to step up into some decent backup minutes. He doesn’t have to be a big scorer. But he should be able to run well, rebound, and defend. Like a young Leon Powe.
Depends on how cheap you can get Powe.
With multiple surgeries in his knees, that’s a red flag.
does he even have knees anymore?
id really prefer that we find a PF with some height too. 6’10 or better would be nice if possible although there are some exceptions like landry and kennieth fariad

You have to believe
Doc was extended because he might have some access to Dwight Howard. Also, this is for me the underlying story which may make or break the Lakers or the Cs for a while. Both teams need to get younger and more athletic which means they may be trying to get the same players in FA and trades. This is going to test each franchise’s overall appeal to NBA players. You have to figure that Doc has as a good reputation among veteran players and maybe less so for younger players. The Lakers are in more flux because they don’t have a coach. However, the Lakers would drop Bynum in a second if they could. So, they would trade Bynum probably for another center, like Howard and Orlando might figure they should trade him next year before he bolts entirely. Need to watch that. Also, assuming the Lakers will finally drop the triangle offense, they will need a point guard. If Turncoat Shaw was going to be their coach they would stick with the triangle but he is interviewing at other places now. We don’t need a PG but we need a center and scrappy longs. The Cs and Lakers could be competing head on for the same players.
by thereallargejames on May 14, 2011 11:31 AM EDT reply actions
Conspiracy Theories?
Maybe Doc was extended because the front office respects him and can work with him?
Just because he lives in Orlando in the off-season doesn’t mean he has access to Howard. Howard, from all I hear, wants 3 things: chance to win, another star (not nearing the end) and warm weather. Boston doesn’t fit. Just not going to happen, folks.
simul justus et peccator
It fits 2 of the 3
The only one that fits all 3 is the Lakers. And for sure they’ll try to get him, and they’d be my odds-on favorite to do so. But the only way you can rule the C’s completely out is if you think Dwight cares more about warm weather than the first two, in which case he stays in Orlando.

Willie Green's an interesting player
A little undersized for a 2 guard but could cover point guards if out there with Delonte. He could be a scorer off the bench and would definitely cost less than Crawford and JR Smith
I don't see him leaving Memphis
But Shane Battier please. Pretty please. I’ve wanted him for years.
by egotistical ma on May 14, 2011 11:37 AM EDT reply actions
Yeah, I was just going to post the same thing.
Something about Battier’s game that I think would translate well witht his group. Only thing is that he doesn’t have the ability to create his own offense and that’s what they need right now.
For the MLE
I don’t think you’re going to find a player who is a good-to-great defender at the 3 and 4, and can also create his own offense. Battier has a jump shot that you need to pay attention to, which is good enough for me. Theoretically Jeff Green can create his own offense, so when they’re on the floor at the same time its okay. And Battier would be a great fill for the endgame lineup, with his defense and outside shot.

Nick Young anyone?
Not sure about his defense or his overall maturity in basketball terms, but the guy can fill it up. Again, seems to talented and young for the Cs to be able to afford him, but if they could get him he may be the instant offense that could really help the club.
Oh Yeah…GET A BIG THAT CAN LAST MORE THAN 30 GAMES! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yep Nick Young
I would start him and Green and have Ray and Paul come off the bench and DESTROY second units for 20-25 mins a game!

Greg Oden will be resigned by Portland
They’ve invested so much in him, I don’t think they can bear the thought of him finally getting healthy with someone else. Three years from now, if he’s still not healthy, then you’ll be able to have that chance, but not this summer, or at least not for anything that the Celtics can afford.
by egotistical ma on May 14, 2011 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions
If Oden gets paid good money thats sad....
he aint done much other than remind people he has potential. i expect him to make less than 7 mil next year. im thinking something close to 3.5
"They’ve invested so much in him"
is a really bad philosophy for sports GMs to follow. In economics they call these “sunk costs” and I suspect that they won’t be completely stupid about it (or maybe not, we are in a league with Kahn as a GM).
I didn't say it was intelligent
But that doesn’t mean they won’t do it.
But there are considerations that make it not unintelligent. Firstly, there is marketing/publicity. He’s generally popular in Portland, because he’s been a good person who’s worked hard, and is sort of the tragic hero figure in their post-JailBlazers era. If he goes elsewhere and succeeds, that hurts their brand somewhat. It’s a crappy situation, but if we look at it from a nice economics game theory perspective, they win big if he’s healthy and they resign him, lose if he’s healthy and signs elsewhere, lose if he’s hurt and they resign, and are neutral if he’s hurt and signs elsewhere. From this perspective, him signing elsewhere is a losing situation, because at best they didn’t hurt themselves. So signing him means you get a chance at a big payoff, with also the chance of a big loss. We could debate all-day long about how much they’re hurt if he goes elsewhere and plays well, and how much they’re hurt if they resign him and he’s injured (based on Paul Allen’s occasional willingness to break the piggy bank open, I’d say not as much as most teams), and what the chances of his health are. But it’s not difficult to construct a scenario where resigning him, even with a 50% chance of Oden’s health, is a good decision to make.
by egotistical ma on May 14, 2011 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions
Oden has had microfracture surgery on BOTH knees!
I agree Portland will sign him…only to avoid the worst case scenario from developing, which is seeing him succeed elsewhere.
I also predict Portland will eventually regret the re-signing.
will cost portland $8m this season to keep him.
they may keep him, not saying they wont. however, if they dont, i want us to nab him up with the promise of minutes. even the chance to start f healthy. lasts eason before the injury in 23 minutes he average 8.5 rebounds and 2.3 blocks

two young bigs id be interested in if their teams would trade them would be jason thompson and jordan hill. id be willing to give up draft picks as well, just not the clippers pick.
BBD i still think we do a sign and trade with. if we can get a good player back for BBD or a trade exception that we can use with picks, etc to get a good player that would be nice. oj mayo would be nice.
use the MLE on a center, id really like dalembert but dont know if we can get him.
i like carl landry if we have to go the PF route.
if oden is available grab him up on a 1 year deal….with the promise of minutes.
vet minimum for michael redd
then look for a PF that can maybe be groomed…fill the roster with potential. draft picks, etc…
west/bradley
mayo/redd
green/redd
thompason or hill/ jo
jo/oden
add youth and talent. could be a good bench even though it’s not likely to be what actually happens.

thats the beauty of it, dont have to.
redd and oden is 1 year deal. even if you give oden 2-3 years, i believe his salary will be between $2-5m.
mayo, thompson are restricted FA after this year. can let him walk or trade him if you want
jordan hill has a team option after this season, so same thing. cut him or trade him.
the only real commitment would be the MLE to dalembert.
kg, jo, ray, shaq all still come off the books after next season and the team cap would sit at $38.7m (would go up if we add rookies)

The point to everything right now in terms of Roster changes
Is that we can’t win a chip with the Big 3 as our best guys. if we don’t make ourselves younger, and more athletic then their is no point. we cant keep picking up little “tweek” player, we need guys who can score the ball, and guys who can Rebound like hell all while running top speed for ~30mins maybe then the big 3 wont break down in the 4th all the time. we gotta stop blowing leads, if we didnt blow so many leads 2010 would have been a chip, and the past 2 years we would have won 10-14 more games a season. imagine that, all it takes is a few guys who can not only just get to their spots, but make their own shots too
I LOLd at this response

No More borken Vets
In 07-08, we got OJ which worked, but in 09-10, got Sheed, 2 years past his shelf life. In 10-11, Shaq, nuff said, except that the cautionary voices were proven right in the end. Need some young legs with springs and no more 6/8 undersized pfs either.
"Celtics bring order and structure to a chaotic world"
aside from Shaq this year and KG in 09
it has mostly been the younger guys getting injured that has truly killed us. Most of the significant injuries over the last three years have been to guys under 30.
In 09-10, lover him or hate him, Sheed stayed healthy througout the year, unlike BBD, TA, Quis, Rondo and ultimately, costing us in the finals, Perk.
Even this year, although it would have been awesome to have had a healthy Shaq for the playoffs, we still probably could have pulled it off, if not for Rondo’s injury.
And obviously the impact of Marquis’ injury on the roster can not be understated, no matter what side of The Trade™ one lines up on.
JO’s injuries hurt during the regular season, but ended up mostly a non-issue in the playoffs.
Still, I don’t disagree it would be preferable to get younger, healthier bodies. However, I don’t know if the CBA rules and budget are going to make that easy.
NBA Officiating - Corrupt? Incompetent? Which is worse? Does it matter? It sucks.
How About.....
Deandre Jordan anybody ? Kid is 7’0 ft tall 250+ pounds , could reb , blk shots , and Dunks really strong , don’t forget what he did to us thid season at the jungle , he just had 21 pts , 10 reb , and a couple blocks lol not to mention he’s only 23 , kids a beast .

Clips are resigning him thats why
He has already said he wants to stay there, and why not? They are a rising team.
Kevin Love should be a priority target. What about Luke Walton or Adam Morrison? Neither has had much of a chance in the league so far.
Sarcasm?
If not, I cant say anything but ROFL.
Luke Walton- An incredibly awful player. Over at SS&R they had a post where using a ton of stats, they deduced that Luke Walton was tied with Jawad WIlliams of the Cavs for worst player in the league-and Willimas was cut by the 17 win Cavs. He cant shoot, cant defend, cant rebound, and is only a mediocre passer. He is also injury prone.
Adam Morrison- Out of the league. He is a guy who cant create off the dribble, but cant make set shots either. In other words, he is worthless.
Kevin Love- Very good rebounder, but nobody else on that team is a good rebounder, and they play at a fast pace. When your next best players are Michael Beasley and Wesley Johnson, you know that you will get stats.
I think Carl Landry would be a good fit for you guys
Much better than BBD, but with half the ego. He is also a Laker-killer for an added bonus.
2 Words: DeAndre Jordan
’Nuff said. Try to work at deal to get him her for MLE and then a raise…Can I dream?
Read above
He is almost certainly resigning with the Clippers, unless they bungle it horribly. He is best friends with Blake, had a break-out year, and is only 23. No way he is leaving.
my list of FA in green uniform nxt yr.
Tracy Mcgrady
J.R smith
Jamal crawford
Samuel Dalembert
Shane Battier
Kwame Brown
Joel Przybilla
Joel Przybilla is a good backup center option
Although he has been injury prone in recent years

Shane Battier and Carl Landry
Real atheletism in Landry. Unlike BBD, he can actually post up AND make jumpshots consistently. Oh, he’s also good at rebounding. We will feed off his energy for damn sure.
Battier is just a savy veteran who can flat out knock down 3’s. I know we have enough ‘veterans’ but this guy can definitely play. He’s used to coming off the bench so no getting used-to will be needed. Even though the guy’s past his prime, he can still play solid d.
These two absolutely great.
"I’m going to probably fade to black,’’ he said. "To be honest, I’m not a showman guy. I’m going to fade to black. I don’t know what I will do. I’m an idealist. I have a high drive and I’m very determined. Fade to black, man, like evaporate.’’
I would be thrilled with Dalembert
As far as replacing Baby? I think that’s why Danny got Murphy; full offseason with organization, full training camp, can shoot better than Baby and rebound as well if not better.
Bradley, etc..
Why is everyone so high on Avery Bradley, I watched probably 80% of the Celtics regular season games and the few times I’ve seen Bradley play he’s been less than impressive… If the Celtics can trade them they should, let’s face it the celtics did not have a good draft last year…just because someone was good in college doesnt mean it translates into the NBA.. anybody remember Bobby Hurley?
Love the idea of Dalembert… JR Smith and Crawford would be an absolute dream.. Pryzbilla was very solid before getting injured…
Scalabrine – why the hell would anyone want this guy back.. he should come back as a celtics cheerleader since thats all he does is sit on the bench (injured) usually and cheerlead..
Battier will probably stay with Memphis… I still think one of the big three along with BBD is going to have to get traded to make any significant difference next season to compete with miami, chicago, NYK.
I think Sasha Pavlavic could have some potential with this team if he gets some playing time… he’s got size and he’s a tough defender and can shoot.. i dont see the point of getting pietrus since they are more or less the same player…
Murphy – he looked horribly out of shape , I hope if he stays he can get back to his old form then he could really contribute…

People like Bradley
Because he’s young. Was he ready for the NBA this year? Absolutely not. Even if he’d been healthy all year, he probably wasn’t going to see the floor much, and his early-season injury just exacerbated the issue. But he’s very athletic, plays defense, and can score when he’s got confidence, which he didn’t have much of this year. But when he was in the D-league, he excelled, despite being younger than all those guys too. He has a lot of skills that will let him improve, and a lot of time to let them improve. Does it offer much comfort when we were trying to win a championship? No, but it doesn’t mean he’s a waste of space to be given up on. Rare is the player who can come to the NBA and be a contributor as a rookie on a championship-contending team. Doesn’t mean he can’t still be really good one day.
Frankly, I think if Avery Bradley were on the Clippers getting Eric Bledsoe minutes, he’d have performed about the same, if not better. And I like Doc, but if Bradley doesn’t develop into at least a high-quality reserve, I’m putting the blame on him for that one. He’s got the talent, he needs the confidence, and that’s part of Doc’s job.

n
get Michael Beasley, Jared Jeffries and Nene!
Michael Beasley, Jared Jeffries and Nene
Michael Beasley, Jared Jeffries or Nene will be great for the team! To those who likes Oden, c’mon! Oden’s knees are older than Patrick Ewing. you just want the Cs to lose with another injured Center. We need a young and beastly Center to complement the big 3 and rondo.
What can we afford?
I hear talk of Dalembart, Landry, Battier, Beasley, Jordan. How can we afford these guys? I bet that Dalembart, Landry, Beasley, and Jordan all get more than the MLE, which means we are out of the running for them. Then we have the LLE, which might get us Jeffries (maybe), but not Battier.
Realistically, what can we get? If we can do a sign and trade for Big Baby, which I seriously doubt we can do, what can we realistically get for an overweight no-show for the recent playoff run?
Smitty77
I don't think Battier gets any major offers this year.
He’s got 1, maybe 2 years left at most.
You’ve just got to sell him that he’s a better fit in Boston than any other contending team. I don’t see any cap room team throwing real money at him. So the question comes down to if any contending team would use their MLE on him. I find it hard to believe they will, but it’s possible. If they don’t, or aren’t willing to commit the full MLE, the Celtics could compete, at least monetarily, in the 2-3mil range by using their Bi-Annual, then it just comes down to him picking what contender he wants to play for, since the money will be similar in either place.
Boston has as good of a chance as any other.
"Phil is obviously a good coach. You don't win that many games without being a damn good coach, ... Remember one thing: He's been very fortunate. He picks his spots. That's all I can say." - Red Auerbach
04 + 07 = 11
Battier
I agree with you Sizzlack that we might have a chance at Battier. That being said, why would Memphis let him go?
Smitty77
Zack = 71mil Rudy =68 mil Conely = 45mil Gasol = Free Agent + gotta make more money
nuff said? or shall i explain further?
Another intriguing option that hasn't been mentioned
Chuck Hayes.
Reportedly he wants to be back in Houston and the Rockets interest is likewise but you never know until the contracts are signed.
He would be a huge upgrade over Baby IMO. He might score less but he’s become a very good passer, he’s a strong rebounder and an all-NBA defender. You could put him on anyone from 3-5 and he’d probably even be successful at guarding LeBron.
Like I said, it’s mostly wishful thinking he’d come to Boston and this doesn’t address other needs like athleticism on the 2 and 5 but it’d be a HUGE upgrade over Baby.
I do believe to key to getting the best player is a keeping Baby and putting him in a trade. Carl Landry is a great target as well.
At the 5 Dalembert would be a decent option but he might be out of our reach.
I do believe that going forward we need a very solid and athletic 2 who might even take over starting duties from Ray. Sherrod Blakely mentioned Aron Afflalo to me on twitter. I like that. He’s a good defender and shooter. Problem is he’s restricted. Anthony Parker might be a realistic target even though I don’t like his age. He can still be productive though.
The way I envision the roster is
PG – Rondo, DWest, Bradley
SG – Ray + athletic, good D FA
SF – PP, Green, another athletic wing (draft?)
PF – KG, Landry? + (draft?)
C – Athletic FA, JO, Krstic
