Community Rankings: Best Celtics Ever

Time to dive into the history books and start debating pointless but fun arguments over which of our favorite Celtics were better than the rest.  You are going to rank the top Celtics from 1 to 23 (or whenever we decide to stop).

The pool of players I've chosen is the retired numbers list plus the current Big 3 (Pierce, KG, and Allen).  I excluded coaches, owners, Rondo (too early), and Antoine (just because).  If anyone feels like I've missed someone important, please feel free to tell me in the comments and I'd be happy to update.

For now, let us start at the top.  Who's the best Celtic ever?  For brevity purposes, I'm including only a select few.

See the full list after the break.

LArry Bird!

Larry Bird is the greatest Celtic of all time. The best All-Around player of All Time. He shoots. He scores. He rebounds. He passes. He plays defense. He is clutch. He is a champ. He does everything.

# 6

11 out of 13 is simply undeniable and unsurpassable.

Has to be Bill Russell.

loved Prague....

beautiful city.

Mr. Nelson was either looking for the next Jiri Welsch or Pilsner Urquell on tap. Maybe both.

Actually, it is interesting that he was there. Did you get to speak with him?

Who are the people who think Paul Pierce is better than Russ and Bird?

I’d love to hear that argument.

Honorable mention...Dave Cowens

He quickly brought the Celtics back from the abyss after Russell retired

But Cowens will always be my favorite.

Bird for me....

I have tons of respect for all Bill Russell accomplished on the basketball court but I never saw him play a single game. There has never been a better defender in NBA history and a bigger winner.

I saw Larry Bird’s entire career and find it hard to believe anyone who has ever warn a Celtics uniform was ever better then “the Legend” He could beat you in more ways then Russell could. He could beat you in more ways then Jordan or Magic or anyone else ever could. His career gets under appreciated because it was cut short by injuries but those injuries were a direct result of the reckless abandon in which he went about his craft. He gave his heart and soul plus his health to the Boston Celtics and for that I rate him #1 all-time. Just a one of a kind basketball talent we were lucky enough to have on our side.

by CelticsFanNC on Sep 11, 2011 7:18 AM EDT reply actions

that's easy....

The 2008 Celtics were one of the greatest teams of their era. No doubt about it.

The 1986 Celtics were arguably the greatest team of ANY ERA. They were untouchable in the Garden. They had one of the two greatest clutch performers in NBA history. They had the greatest front court in NBA history. 5 HOFers. One of the best defensive guards in NBA history. One of the 3 greatest power forwards in NBA history. Two of the top 15 Centers in NBA history. They had Larry Bird who was better then anyone on the 2008 champs.

  No contest. 1986 Celtics

That 86 team was something else.

by fordescort on Sep 11, 2011 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Simple answer, 86.

There are very few players in sports who simply change the entire game by stepping on the court, the 86 team had two of them, Bird and Walton.

by Little D on Sep 11, 2011 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Here's how I'd put it:

Russell was the greatest Celtic of all time, and Bird was the most well-rounded Celtic of all time. In some ways they are a classic apples/oranges comparison, in terms of the generations they represent, the positions they played, and the roles/impact they had on their team.
Russell’s passing, defense and rebounding completely transformed the way the center position could be played. Bird’s overall game made him the focal point of every defensive scheme, and his clutch shooting in particular was huge.
It’s a great debate, but I say Russell’s pioneering work, and its results, make him No. 1.

by Big_Easy on Sep 11, 2011 9:05 AM EDT reply actions

I think

Russel and Bird were 2 of the greatest players to wear the Celtic uniform.
Who was the greatest out of the 2 is a tough one for me say.

Bird was the better all around player between the 2 and had more versatility in his game, as he helped the C’s win 3 titles.

Russel though was a more superior defensive player and the literal backbone to his teams, who helped them win a incredible 11 NBA titles, creating the Celtic dynasty that we know today.

I say flipping a coin would be the only fair and easy way to decide who should be # 1 between the 2 ..lol

In of Red's books, he answers the Russell/Bird question

I paraphrase. Given the choice I would draft Russell over Bird…..and then make a trade for Bird.

by thereallargejames on Sep 11, 2011 1:51 PM EDT reply actions

Russell

Never saw Russell play but 11 titles in 13 years is the measuring stick by which everyone is measured. Bird was awe-inspiring but Russell gets the nod as #1.

As far as how far we should go down the list, I’m not sure why 23 was picked. I’m not sure if we should just keep going until Antoine finally makes the list.

by slamtheking on Sep 11, 2011 5:24 PM EDT reply actions

No coin flip needed, it's Russell! He's on a level by himself.

He won TWO World Championship not only as a player coach, but the first African American NBA coach.

by Little D on Sep 11, 2011 9:46 PM EDT reply actions

????

Just playing devils advocate here. If Russell’s 11 titles in 13 seasons automatically makes him the greatest Celtic player of all-time as many have suggested then why isn’t he also considered the greatest player in NBA history by most rather then Michael Jordan who “only” has 6 titles?

I don’t think it a should be as cut and dried as most here seem to think. The eras in which they played were so completely different so NBA titles might not be the best way to measure the greatness or impact of these two players. I’m not even going to go so far as to say one era was superior to another but I will say that Bird had to beat a whole lot tougher competition for his 3 titles then either Russell or Jordan had to beat for their 17 combined titles. I believe that’s is undeniable. If that’s the case then you have to move on to other ways of measuring greatness.

I have flip flopped on the Bird/Russell debate for three decades. The way of measuring this kind of thing is so subjective. If it is NBA titles which is what they all play for, then Russell is the greatest basketball player the world has ever seen hands down. So why is it generally excepted that Jordan, not Russell is the greatest player in NBA history?

Russell came to a playoff team and made them champions for a decade. He wasn’t the only addition but he is generally and rightfully considered the main cog. Bird came to the worst team in the NBA and made them into title contenders for a decade, 3 time champions. Bird also wasn’t the only addition but is generally and rightfully considered the main cog.

I just don’t think it is as cut and dried as most do. Bird’s impact on the games in which he played, the Celtic’s franchise and the NBA itself rivals that of Bill Russell’s. Bird’s all around skill set is rivaled by almost no one in NBA history.

by CelticsFanNC on Sep 12, 2011 8:54 AM EDT reply actions

I find those that think Jordan is the best are typically the same people who only followed basketball after the glory days of Bird and Magic, nevermind having never seen Russell play.

I wouldn’t rank Jordan as the best. I’d be hard-pressed to put him in the top 5 just based on the players I have play since ‘79. I’d take Russell, Wilt, Bird and Magic over Jordan every day of the week and that’s not even considering Oscar, West and Kareem as dominant players in their times.

by slamtheking on Sep 12, 2011 10:21 AM EDT up reply actions

??

I find that almost every single member of the sports media has gift wrapped the NBA’s greatest of all-time and handed it to Jordan pretty much without debate. Most of them not only witnessed Bird and Magic but many also witnessed Russell.

I’m not saying it is right by any means. Personally I witnessed Larry Bird and at the height of his powers he was every bit as great as Jordan if not better.

by CelticsFanNC on Sep 13, 2011 6:54 AM EDT up reply actions

You're kidding, right?

Baylor West and Chamberlain are about as tough as it can get!

by Little D on Sep 12, 2011 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Baylor/Wilt/Oscar

They were tough, great players but the teams they played on were nowhere near as stacked as the teams Larry Bird’s Celtics had to beat not only to win an NBA title but just to get to the NBA Finals. Same can be said of the era in which Jordan dominated which was watered down but a huge amount of expansion between the mid 80’s to the mid 90’s.

This is why I can no longer use NBA titles as the only/main factor in measuring a players greatness because winning those titles in some eras was a whole lot easier then winning them in other eras. Bird and Magic happened to have dominated what I consider to be the toughest decade in NBA history.

by CelticsFanNC on Sep 13, 2011 7:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Have you looked at...

…the record of the 1981 Rockets?

by Little D on Sep 13, 2011 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Look a the rosters of the not just the Celtics and Lakers but also the 76ers, Spurs, Rockets and Pistons for all or parts of the decade of the 80’s. The top teams were stacked. It doesn’t matter what the bottom looked like because you dont go throgh those teams to win titles. It was tougher to get into the Finals during the decade of the 80’s then in any other decade in my lifetime. Once you got there either the Celtics or Lakers where usually there waiting for you.

by CelticsFanNC on Sep 13, 2011 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions

that's sort of flawed logic

the easy counter is that the top teams could have had inflated records because the worse teams were so bad.

I don’t think it is particularly useful to try to say one era was necessarily tougher / easier than another era.

You can only compare a player or team within his/its era.

Bill Russell dominated his era (which spanned a looooong time) more than any other basketball player dominated their respective era.

by mmmmm on Sep 14, 2011 9:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Thats flawed logic....

What teams record look like don’t matter and I never said it did. How tough the teams were to get into the finals and eventually win the NBA title is absolutely a factor in how tough that era was. The best teams of the 80’s were stacked making it not only difficult to get to the NBA Final but also extremely difficult to win once you got there.

by CelticsFanNC on Sep 15, 2011 7:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Who's logic is really flawed here????

If the team at the top are stacked with great players, which they were during the 80’s more so then in any other era then it is pretty logical to assume that it was not only tougher to get to the NBA Finals but also win once you got theree.

During Russell’s era there were only one or two great teams the Celtics had to compete against to win the NBA title During Bird’s era there were at least twice as many.

How is that so hard to follow?

by CelticsFanNC on Sep 15, 2011 7:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Russel IS the greatest player in NBA history.

Jordan just happens to be the more recent, most ‘popular’ player in NBA history.

When you talk about different eras here, keep in mind that Russell was one of the defining, transforming forces that brought the game INTO the modern era that both Bird and Jordan played in.

by mmmmm on Sep 13, 2011 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions

I used to....

argue that Russell is the greatest of all-time to anyone who would listen. I’m not dogging Russell in any way. I just think Larry Bird was a better all around basketball player then Russell was. He could impact the game of basketball in more ways then Russell or probably anyone else in NBA history could. The amazing passing, the unparalleled shooting, the rebounding, the toughness. He was the entire package and he rose up in the biggest moments like few have done before or since.

If I’m picking a team among every who has ever played in the NBA my first choice over all would be Larry Bird. That’s just my own thoughts on it. The way he played the game inspired a life long love affair with basketball for me. I’ve never cared to see another Michael Jordan, but I am dying to see another Larry bird even though it is highly unlikely we will ever see a player like him again.

Russell and Bird

How soon we forget. Maybe you have to be over 50 to appreciate Bill Russell, old enough to have seen him play. They changed the rules of Basketball for him when he started playing, as he was so adept at getting the rebound, doubling the width of the free throw lane. As for the competition, don’t overlook the talent that Russell played against: Baylor, Chamberlain, West (all on one team once, if you don’t think there was a Celtic’s opponent with the equivalent talent of Magic and Kareem), and other legendary hall of famers. The same argument will be made some day about the “inferiority” of Michael Jordan. (After all, how could he compete with the awesome athleticism of today’s athletes? I’m being facetious here.)
When I saw Bird play, I thought I’d never seen a better passer. Not Magic, not Stockton, not Cousy, not Kidd (yes, he’s up there as well, though I don’t like to admit it.) More than his shooting or rebounding, which were awesome, that is what stood out. All of these players, especially Bird, had (have) an extra dimension to their game: they were passer-playmakers, which is distinctly different from being a good passer, able to orchestrate a game several moves in advance. (Rondo has some of that ability, which is why I think he could be the best point guard of his generation, and is why I expect the Celtics will keep him over others such as Paul, if given the opportunity). What Russell did with defense, Bird did with offense.
Still, though Bird was an awesome player, no player was better than Bill Russell. For too many reasons to recount.
Oh, one more thing: For all you young worshippers of athleticism as a benchmark for greatness, know that Russell was more of a world class athlete by the standards of his day, measured against world records for running and jumping, than Jordan. Though it is only a small piece of what makes a player great, it is likely that Russell was both faster and a better jumper than His Airiness. His 11 championships are well deserved.
