Community Rankings: The Top Ten

There will be no poll today as we take a quick break, but we've closed voting on tenth place.  Robert Parish barely beat out Kevin Garnett to round out the top ten.

Without further adieu, your ten best all-time Celtics:

  1. Bill Russell
  2. Larry Bird
  3. John Havlicek
  4. Paul Pierce
  5. Bob Cousy
  6. Kevin McHale
  7. Dave Cowens
  8. Tommy Heinsohn
  9. Sam Jones
  10. Robert Parish

So, how did the community do?  Who is too high?  Too low?  Left off?

Roy

I think you’ve been tasting the Bacardi. Bill Cousy? Seriously though, I don’t see Tommy Heinsohn in the top ten if we are speaking strictly as a player and not life time achievement award.

Ha

Bill Cousy is Bob’s slightly less talented cousin, who somehow ranks behind Pierce.

Also, as for Tommy...

8 rings, 6-time All-star, 4-time All-NBA, led three title teams in scoring, came up clutch multiple times, including his heroic effort in the Finals as a rookie… He’s a deserving player for the top-ten. Who trumps him? Arguably Sharman, but that’s about it if you’re talking about achievements with the team. Maybe KG, if only discussing peak performance.

Even then - Tommy's rookie playoff performance

was some kinda helluva awesome ‘peak performance’.

Tommy’s spot in the Top 10 is well deserved.

PP too high right now

should be #7 with those at #5-#7 moved up a slot.

by slamtheking on Sep 26, 2011 3:18 PM EDT reply actions

Ditto

That’s my judgment, too. Pierce is placed too high…for right now. I’d drop him to 7 and move the current 5-7 up a slot. If Paul wins another Championship, then he’s deserving of #4.

If KG wins another Championship with the C’s, then I’d vote for him over Parish and Jones, too. Right now, though, he’s 12th on my list.

It was to fun to rank the Celtic greats...

I also chose (though in different order) all the players in the community ranking except for Heinsohn and Jones in my own personal top 10 ranking, preferring to go with DJ and Maxwell instead.
I was maybe showing my bias going with DJ and Max since I grew up watching them and not Heinsohn and Jones.

I think the community ranking of top 10 Celtics even though its not fully my own personal preference is fair, except that I do not think Pierce should out rank Mchale and there ranking slots should be swapped with one and other.

by fordescort on Sep 26, 2011 4:19 PM EDT reply actions

that's the prob bob -

- we all watched at different times – i’m partial to bird, mchale, parish, dj – and now #34

- tough to comment on cousy, havlicek, et al…myself having not been invented yet and only having grainy video and stats to go by, plus, no 3-point line, less teams, less travel (albiet tougher travel) – it’s all subjective – but fun, like you say, and a good list -

 Well said.

Though I think with the mega older Celtic stars like Russel, Cousy and Hondo it may be a bit easier to rank such players even if we did not see them play live, since there play and accomplishments are so well documented through the years…
Ranking older Celtic players we did not see is tough to do indeed and may open one up (like myself probably..lol) to personal bias and preferring to rank a younger generation Celtic player we grew up with and saw play live over (maybe unfairly) a older generation Celtic player.

That list is just about right.

The only I may have done different is switch Cowens and McHale, but then I would just be nitpicking.

Tommy and Pierce both represent "unique situations"

Pierce : He gets screwed in the sense that he was surrounded by awful talent his first 10 years, not only depriving him of championships but also making him the focus of the opposition`s defense. As a pure basketball talent, he deserves all the credit he gets and then some.

Tommy : As a player, let`s just say Tommy was in the right place at the right time. Unlike modern athletes, he smoked and didn`t keep himself well conditioned at all. That`s why he retired at 31.

However, Tommy is greatly under-appreciated as a coach. Things were as bleak as can be when he took over, yet within 4 short years the Celts were the most feared team in the league! His philosophy was simple…run, run, run!

Agree about Pierce - disagree strongly about Tommy

Tommy should receive no caveats as a player. He was a 6 time All Star because he was a great player, not because what lucky enough to be ‘in the right place at the right time’. His rookie year was phenomenal because he was phenomenally talented. He was a scoring beast for the C’s because he could shoot the lights out and was an incredible athlete known for his agility. He was also tough as a bull dog. Yes he didn’t take as good as care of his health as a modern athlete. He was not alone in that and I don’t think that’s really relevant when considering how great of a player he was.

There also have been few players who were as ‘basketball smart’ as Tommy.

Tommy averaged 22 FGA...22 PPG

I love Tommy as much as anyone….primarily as a coach, and as a “homer” who loves the Celtics.

Parish

We called him ’the hands of stone" and flinched every time he faded away and shot. Without Bird and McHale being double teamed….he was …….well…… tall……and could run pretty fast. He occasionally looked good when he was opposed by midget centers. Not against guys his size. Most overrated of all the Celtics in the poll.

I'm not the Devil's Advocate but I consiider him a close friend

He was…….well…….. THE CHIEF!!!

by 2012Celtic on Sep 27, 2011 7:16 AM EDT up reply actions

Blunt words...but true

Parish had a “drinking problem” as a Celtic, which did not help matters.

Exhibit A : 1985 Finals were lost because LA`s 37 year old Kareem Abdul-Jabbar badly outplayed the 31 year old Chief. Jabbar won the Finals MVP that year.

by Title 18 on Sep 27, 2011 8:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I disagree...

If Parish was as limited as you’re remembering, there’s simply no way he would have consistently put up 18/10 on 55% shooting. In 1981 and 1984, he was our second scoring option; especially in ‘81, McHale was rarely playing, and certainly wasn’t limiting Chief’s touches.

The guy was a nine-time all-star. I don’t think he clearly belongs below anybody who is left.

For me....

I see a strong link between Pierce and Havlicek in terms of career output and game impact. They both do an incredibly lot on the court and have for a long period of time….

but neither could do it alone.
