How are THEY doing it?
Funny- I see that the Jazz are 7-4, and the Nuggets are 8-4 (without 2 off their main players from last year, in China). Also, the Spurs without Ginobli, etc. etc. We have a bit of adversity, but we keep banging our head against the same old walls that I have posted about before. Doc is too busy over coaching, and trying to 'send messages" to those that need to earn his respect. He is one of the big reasons why FA's will not want to come to Boston. I wonder if he would be able to change his offensive philosophy if given a younger team? Mostly, the lack of any penetrating guards (except Rondo) create our problems, but even when Rondo attacks, the bigs are not in a position to go to the boards. Look at the Bulls (particularly Noah and Boozer) when Rose drives. They follow him to the front of the rim, so when shot blockers go for rose- they are there to follow up. This is a matter of position and philosophy. Since Doc always wants us to fall back quickly, and relies on Rondo more to set up plays, the bigs are RARELY in a position to rebound. Add to that, the fact that JO and KG can't elevate, and he rarely plays Wilcox and Stiemsma, and you have a major problem. I cringed when we brought back Daniels, Pavlovich and added Dooling and Pietrus- all of whom cannot create off the dribble or be used as a pick and roll passing threat when teams switch. We have a bunch of standing shooters with questionable skills- Its nice to have shooters, but you need some creators off the dribble to make defenses rotate. the Jazz and Nuggets are young- and their coach plays 10 guys - the Spurs are old, but Pop uses his rookies without the fear that Doc seems to have. If this keeps up, Rondo is going to be frustrated at having no one that can run with him or utilize his strengths. You might as well flip Rondo, Bradley, and Wilcox + draft picks to Sac for Cousins and Evans- Trade RA for Mayo / chandler / or Smith. Let kg go (or stay as bench for cheap)- and let PP be sixth man. Sign an FA in the offseason and play the young guys more. we need to see what Moore and JJJ can do to evaluate for next year.
Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.

Austin rivers
You think Doc was signed to extension so he could coach his son next year? I’m not sure he has many offensive cards to play at this time, but he can at least mix it up. Danny needs to tell him … or we may end up trading JJJ, Moore, stemma before we really know their potential.
I doubt seriously that that scenario is the driving force behind Doc signing that extension.
Why not wait and see what team is most likely to actually get a chance to draft him? At the time, Doc was considered a hot NBA coaching commodity and probably could get most any open coaching job.
The odds of the Celtics actually getting Austin are pretty slim. Further, Doc has made a couple comments implying he might be uncomfortable coaching his son.
NBA Officiating - Corrupt? Incompetent? Which is worse? Does it matter? It sucks.
Doc
Doc is one of the reasons a free agent WOULD want to come here. Doc is an elite coach and you routinely see other coaches around the league biting his offensive plays.
exactly
Doc is probably the 2nd best coach in the league after Popovich and the players know it. Though I do like Nate McMillian.

some good- some bad
Doc is great at designing plays- absolutely. But its a double-edged sword. How often does a play break down and we get a shot clock beating prayer? Way too often. Also, when you try to mix players, you can’t because they might have timing issues- and when you have new players it takes too long to learn plays. Players need some freedom to be aggressive, but we are not aggressive because we cannot attack the basket. Doc preaches defense but his asst coaches have had way more to do with their defense than him. what has been a consistent trademark of his era is a complete lack of commitment to rebounding- regardless of who is on the team.
like who?
every time i hear about a FA target (Howard, Paul, West, and a few in the past like Anthony, Wade, etc) they all have said they are not coming to boston. Maybe the weather is bad- but Doc is hardly an attraction. Can you name all these guys that are knocking our door down?
At the all-star game last year,
Wade and Lebron cornered Doc and basically begged him to go to Miami to be their coach.
If Doc had not signed that extension with the C’s after last season, he almost certainly could have bumped Spoelstra out of there and it would have been because the players wanted him.
The rep is that players generally love Doc. He is in no way “one of the big reasons why FA’s will not want to come to Boston”.
That doesn’t mean that he is enough of an attractor to overcome all other factors (salary cap space, future competitivity, cold winters, etc.) that are of concern to the players (they aren’t all simpletons).
It just means your statement doesn’t make sense.

Adding to what mmmmm said which was right on, every guy you mentioned has been impossible to sign with Boston as a FA because they’ve been well over the cap since they’ve been a contender. West is erroneously reported to have chosen Indiana over a similar Boston offer, when the most Boston could offer West was the minimum when the sign and trade with NO fell through after Paul deal got scrapped.
The only guys Boston has been able to fight for have been midlevel guys. Jermaine had other options, but chose here. Rasheed was one of the top midlevel FA on the market, he chose here. Ray Allen could’ve gone many places to go for similar bucks two years ago, but he chose to stay here. Some of those signings didn’t work out, but there was competition for them. Was Doc the sole reason these guys chose to come here? No.
Guys will choose to go places for more money, weather, minutes, title contention, they got friends on the team, coaching……and coaching probably comes behind all those other things.
I don’t think anyone is saying, hey Dwight Howard will take less money to come to Boston because he loves Doc as a coach. A coach is way too far down the list of priorities.
But to say Doc is a big reason FA’s will not want to come here is ridiculous. Even if players hated him it wouldn’t be true. And in his case, it’s just the opposite according to pretty much everyone who covers the NBA. He’s a plus for players considering coming here, not a minus.
Clarity
I agree that FA’s wanting to come because of a coach is just as absurd as players not wanting to come- other factors that you mentioned are more important. No argument there. My main reason for saying that was because, if we keep pieces of our current team (Allen/KG/PP), doc has shown that they will dominate minutes (because you cannot deny he can be inflexible with playing time for others over his big 3). For that reason, FA’s MAY look elsewhere because of uncertain playing time. I would love Doc as a starter—but as a sub …not so much. If you hadn’t stopped reading my post, you would have seen that I point out other coaches who have managed to have success mixing vets with younger players- even when missing top players. I simply disagree with his philosophy (rebounding/sub rotations/micromanaging the last 5 minutes) that has been OBVIOUSLY evident for the last two years. Is he the reason we are losing? Of course not… but the purpose of this season is just as much to find the right pieces moving forward, than competing for a ring.
