I am tiered of the blow up the Celtics talk. Blow it up so the Celtics can fall into basketball ambiguity. Go the way of the Nets, Wizards, Pistons, Raptors, 76ers, Kings. Blowing it up doesn’t make any sense. Why would you want to do that, when next year with the exception of Pierce (who should be regarded as untradeable) you will have the potential to get what you want for nothing? You don’t trade your franchise captain. Who has time and time again single-handedly won games and put the whole team on his back. Give the truth a chance to heal and get back into shape.

You don’t trade Rondo. Rondo might be great trade bait but he is equally a great attraction for some star to become a Celtic. Why would you get rid of one of the most talented and unique players in the NBA. A pass first point guard. Next year the big 2 (KG,RA) can come off the bench, and for cheap.

One of the biggest problems the Celtics have faced over the past 4 years is too many personnel changes. There is such a thing as chemistry and comradery. Players mesh and gel, and as much as they play for themselves they play for each other.

The majority of teams that have exhibited great success over the past 5 years have had few roster changes. Teams that are consistently contenders tweak here and there trying to obtain the few missing pieces.

Danny’s biggest fault to date is his inconsistency. Much like his shot in the early days of his NBA career Danny fails to recognize the importance of consistency. Danny has become wheel and deal happy. Over the past 5 years the Celtics have traded, cut, or retired over 28 players.

It appears Danny like Celtic fans has become prone to panic. (I too freak out when the Celtics don’t win.)

The Perkins trade was and is a mistake. Jeff Green will get better, and I’m sure he will play better than last year, but not good enough. We traded Eddie House for Nate Robinson. What did we trade Nate Robinson for again? Not resigning James Posey was a mistake. Not resigning Tony Allen was a Mistake. Not resigning Delonte West was a mistake. For the most part these were all players that produced and were on any given night game winning X factors. They were grimy. I’m going to do whatever I have to do to get my team to win players. They were Celtics through and through. They were also with the exception of maybe Perkins Cheap.

Danny loves to lament how Red Auerbach held on to the 1986 Celtics team for too long. Danny thinks he should have blown up the 1986 Celtics team much earlier. I disagree. It’s easy to say that when you are in Danny’s shoes.

Let’s look at it another way. Danny has been GM in Boston since 2003.In the 8 years Danny has been GM the Celtics have won one championship. In the 18 years Red was GM the Celtics won 7 championships. I don’t like Danny’s odds. You mean to tell me in the next 10 years Danny Ainge is going to bring Boston 6 more championships. Hey if Danny can do it I’ll eat my words gladly, but numbers don’t lie.

In the years 1959-1966 The Celtics won 8 Championships in 8 seasons and with less with less than 25 roster Changes.

The Perkins trade was about banner 18 and where did that get us. It was about the here and now and it failed.

Danny the Big Three was a stroke of genius, or Celtics luck. The Big Baby trade is solid.

But for the love of God for right now Danny chill. Players need to get to know one another. Greatness begins in the imagination, and manifests itself through the heart. Players need to be able to trust one another, and that just doesn’t happen in 10 games. I have faith in my team. The aging lone wolf is often the most dangerous. Go Celtics!

Hindsight

Too much Hindsight here. Green trade was a potential streal for celtics- no one could have predicted the outcome there. Posey fell off dramaticlly (and health) after we let him go. Perk is not a world beater by any means for OKC (at least not 55 million worth). Shake a tree and guys like Nate fall out – spectacular one night-awful the next. Yes we have moved pieces- mostly because our core has been steady for the last few years. Before that, Danny had to stockpile talent and potential in order to secure the big three. Now we are looking for the right pieces to compliment the big three- and it should be the other way around. As their ability diminishes, we need to adjust. It is the GM’s job to field the best team – even if that means moving or replacing the players that are deemed Untouchable. Loyaly is great trait- but what does it look like later? Your view makes sense in that we could be loyal to our stars this year, and move to rebuild next year. But players WILL inevitably be moved or replaced… the timing doesn’t really matter if your goal is to improve the team. Danny just sid as much- and I agree.

In many ways I agree with what you are saying. It’s not necessarily the moves Danny made, but when he made them. I am fairly confident the C’s will improve this season, to what extent I cant say. Will all just have to hold our breath and wait and see. One thing is for sure next year this team will look very differet. My personal feeling is that we will have more tools to re up to our advantage after this season.

But these numbers do – or at least they mis-lead. The numbers you are using ignore context. There are 30 teams in the NBA now and far more restrictive roster rules that tie a GMs hands. Danny cannot pull many of the same tricks and schemes that Red did.

To compare ‘titles per year’ rates between Red’s era and Danny’s is apples and oranges.

And as P stoff points out, there is some serious second guessing going on. If not for injuries over which Danny could have no control – KG’s in 2009, Perk’s in 2010 and Rondo/Shaq/BBD/Delonte’/Marquis/etc. in 2011, we could very easily have 2 or even 3 more titles in this era.

And you can’t put all those injuries on Danny under the ‘he signed old guys’ rubric because of all those various injuries the only one you could argue was ‘age related’ might be Shaq’s.

It takes a TON of things to go right in order to win an NBA title and only a portion of that is under the control of the GM. Most of it depends on other people (the coaches and players) and a big portion of it is simple, pure luck.

I also disagree strongly with the contention that not resigning Posey, Delonte' and Tony Allen were 'mistakes'.

They both were easily the right moves at the time and letting Posey go was easily the right move even in hindsight.

Tony wanted starter minutes. He was not going to get those on a team with Paul Pierce. So his leaving was HIS call, not Danny’s. If you disagree, then you are saying you think Tony should be starting for us instead of Pierce.

Delonte’ West looks good at the moment – but he missed 58 games last year and is a very well known quantity to Danny & Doc. If they had more faith that he was actually going to stay healthy and be productive for us I’m sure they would have put more effort in retaining him.

When you win a title and are over the cap, your roster is going to change. Role players with a ring start looking for starter money so you have to let them go. Your cap restrictions mean you can only replace them with minimum contract players. Not foundational players that you need for the long term. Your draft position tanks and you get players like Bill Walker & CO – not players you are going to build the future around.

So the fact that Danny has ‘traded, cut, or retired over 28 players’ is kinda just symptomatic of success. That’s what’s going to happen around the core until we finally start the process of replacing the core – which will happen after this year.

i agree with most of this

it’s important to realize that Danny is set up perfectly for big moves this offseason. but even more important is the fact that this team can still compete with any team on any night. roster changes messed them up last year — think about how important chemistry is to this (any) team. this year the shortened lockout has hurt them.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: last year, for most of the year, the C’s had the 2nd best record in the league and were beating quality opponent after quality opponent. they were doing it with offense (spurs, knicks games) and defense. they were playing the best basketball of the big 3 era, or at least since the championship season.

age no doubt factors into their poor play at the end of last year and beginning of this year. but there are just as many reasons to think it’s been other things too. i really don’t know if it’s specifically a Boston thing, but people just seem so quick and willing to dismiss the positive and embrace the negative.. realize what we have here, people, and enjoy it while it lasts!

Our team just got bit by the injury bug the past three years

part of that is age, sure. But Portland has had terrible luck with injuries and they are a young team. Dallas had all their key players healthy for the playoff last year and they are as old as we are. Stuff happens. If we didn’t have the injuries, we would have competed for the title in ’09, probably won it in ’10, and had a much much better chance at it last year.

This year, who knows what’s gonna happen. If Green had been healthy and we had gotten West, we could have the best record in the East. Out of 8 losses, six of them were easily winnable had we had a little more rest, practice. It’s a long shot now that we can pull anything meaningful out of this season, but we’ll see.

Danny is a cool cat. And he has some big cojones. He can wheel and deal with the best of them. I say give him a chance to see what he can do for the rest of this season and the summer.

Celtics

Danny and Doc must really think that the fans are dumb and stupid with all that has been written about the team. I just hope they realize one thing that the teams needs changes and soon. No hustle bad shooting and most of all old and slow players bring up the rear.
