Tempering Expectations After A Winning Streak

It can be easy to get caught up in the negativity of losing streaks. Likewise it can be all too easy to get carried away with a winning streak.

Boston Celtics Winning Streak A Good Start, But February Will Be Key - SB Nation Boston

The easy thing to do after a game like this is to proclaim that the Celtics have turned the corner and are well on their way back to being among the elite teams in the NBA again. A quick look at their upcoming schedule will give fans hope that this may actually be the case, as they have winnable games coming up against the Cleveland Cavaliers (twice) and Toronto Raptors before the schedule will begin to stiffen again (the Lakers, Bulls (x2), Mavericks, Thunder, and Grizzlies all are on tap in February). However, I would caution against getting too carried away with the teams current winning streak.

... the lesson here is not to get worked up over a sample size of four games. Players can get hot and teams can get hot, but as Celtics fans should be fully aware by now, it's the ability to play consistently well against the elite teams of the league that separates the haves from the have nots.

Are the Celtics "back" now? Too early to tell. I like the direction they are going though. For now, that's enough.

They haven't fully turned the corner (too few games of playing proper Celtics basketball)

But maybe they can go from old team that can barely make the 1st round, to long shot contender like last year. During the losing streak it seemed like the big 3 were so far gone that the Celtics were not contenders at all, now it looks like they may still be longshot contenders (right now they haven’t even earned that though). Can’t really ask for much for than that from the big3 at this point in their careers, a tiny glimmer of hope. I didn’t think the Mavs had even that last year tbh, but they went all the way.

Agreed, cannot get too high nor too low

Still think the C’s need an upgrade at center in order to challenge this year. A solid upgrade there to compliment JO, Wallace would enable us to compete with Miami, Chi in the east.
Cousins would have been terrific. + of course health still a major issue

Agree. Myself and others need not to get too excited about these previous wins, though they’re very encouraging wins. The Celtics need to play hard every night and not just during the second half of games. Health is also key and right now injuries to Rondo, Dooling and JO are concerning, but not too concerning.

Win or lose make it to the playoffs that’s all that’s key. Isn’t strange how the C’s are playing better without Allen and Rondo? Just saying. lol

New Players to win it all

Trade J.O`Neal,C.Wilcox,A.Bradley,E.Moore, & J.Johnson to New Orleans for G.Vasquez then negotiate the GM to buyout C.Kaman because y`all gave him 5 good role players and they will take that deal. Also trade Dooling,Daniels,Pavlovic, and 1st round pick to Houston for C.Budinger,T.Williams, & H.Thabeet. Also go after Kenyon Martin sign him for 3 years 7 million. Resign E.House and R.Wallace for 1 year.

wow.

I think our current win streak has pretty much proven that our lineup can be effective if everyone is on the same page and is in good condition at least, physically. Trading away half the lineup and rebuilding again is well… just crazy methinks.

Wow indeed

Not that there is anything wrong with playing Trade Checker, but..

What worries me

…is going back to the usual starting group with Ray and JO. The combo of younger legs and PP directing traffic is effective. Concerned to go away from it. On the basis of this weeks play, would favor the Cs vs LA and Dallas, and competitive vs the rest.

I'm not quite ready to go with "competitive vs the rest"--

but I agree that Paul and KG plus young legs seems to be a winning formula.

I’m already having premonitions of Doc going back to the old lineup and the team backsliding accordingly.

old legs

4 sets of old legs to me was killing us earlier in the season. A better mixture of young legs with speed and quickness added to our experienced veterans has worked out better IMO but will either way work against the NBA’s truly elite teams? Only time will tell but I have some doubts.

There is something about rondo coming back that concerns me. I believe his personality is reflecting negatively on the rest of the squad.

beating orlando and indiana is alot better than beating detroit, wash. and toronto. it was the defense that got them 4 in a row and that was effort and team play- that can be repeated.

Hm.

I know this is too early, but I hope to see the Celtics beat Lakers in The Garden! After all, they’re a bad road time this year.

It's easy to say 'it's too soon,' 'temper expectations,' etc.

But in fact, it’s not too soon at all. Here’s why:

At this point of the season, with the team clearly trying to improve after a slow start, what are we really looking to see? We’re looking to see HOW GOOD THEY CAN BE. Not how good they can be consistently… just how good they are, at their best. Why? Because we already know that this team can and will turn it on for the playoffs. So what we seek to know is: ‘When they do turn it on, how good will they be?’

So anything that shows us they can be great IS very significant. And yes, you CAN draw conclusions from even one game, to say nothing of 4.

PP used to run the team and he didn't have the team he has now.

He used to have Walker. Now he has KG, Bass Ray and Rondo….the team looks good with him running the floor…one of the great players of all time who won’t get the respect because the C’s sucked for so long..seriously this is what he used to do…right? We watched him carry the team for years.

Bradley plays D so hard they need to carry him off the court. KG has looked better because the D has been balanced. He was a mess at the start of season …trying to do too much.

by tstorey1 on Jan 29, 2012 2:37 AM EST reply actions

PP

“carrying the team” isn’t going to get it done because there are teams and players that can make Pierce look totally mortal. Two guys, one in Chicago(Deng) and one in Miami(LBJ) smother Pierce.

Also our offense was more efficient with Rondo running it earlier in the season when we were losing despite guys missing shots they have always made and missing a ton of lay ups.

Pierce running the offense isn’t going to work against elite defenses. It6 is nothing against Pierce but this is not 2005 so asking Pierce to carry the load night in a night out is asking too much of him at this stage of his career. It didn;t even work well back then in terms of wins and losses.

I do have to temper MY expectation....that doc mixes up his rotations more

Watching Bradley play defense with the starting unit…..thing of beauty—-EXploit that Doc!!…. I’d like to see doc reward the current rotation with oppurtunity and save the old guys for the stretch……I also know it ain’t gon happen…..aaaaaaw dreams.

malcontents....the lot of you

No one seems to like Mikael Petrus

I think he has made a BIG difference. He defends much better then Ray, is even shooting at least as well or better and has the younger legs and a little more length. Also Ray has increased his nasty habit of making very bad turnover type passes.

I'm not the Devil's Advocate but I consiider him a close friend

by Dipper on Jan 29, 2012 8:44 AM EST reply actions

I actually loved the Mikael signing...

and said so from day one.

He has offered length, athleticism, versatility, toughness, defense and offensive punch off the bench that has been a great weapon for the C’s so far this season.

I think when all is said and done the cops may put Ainge in jail for acquiring both Mikael and Bass since both acquisitions may turn out to be steals.

I have seen a ton of articles, posts, comments expressing l’amore for MP and almost none to the contrary.

I don't love his three's but so far he has been pretty amazing shooting from beyond the arc.

What I am curious to see is when he hits a cold streak on shooting threes does he have the ability to score consistently by going to the basket and either drawing fouls and/or scoring in the paint? I just don’t know that because I don’t know his game.

I am not a big proponent of very much three point shooting and I still have dreams of the Toine and PP era of jacking up one ill-advised three point shot after another. We have to stay aggressive by pushing the ball inside and putting pressure on teams in the paint and do it quickly before their defense gets set.

With all this said, I like Peitrus so far. Love? not so fast…

Agree fully...

with your comment:

“It can be easy to get caught up in the negativity of losing streaks. Likewise it can be all too easy to get carried away with a winning streak”

We really need another month or so to get a better barometer on this Celtics team and to learn if they can really be able to compete this year or not.

Only time can give us the answer, so we must let this play out a bit longer .

5 games in 8 days

big week coming up…if celts take 4 out of 5 (especially NYK game) they can start thinking about 6th seed (1st round vs. 6ers).

very early for that, i know, but this is what we are left to focus on.

Tempering Expectations.....

We’re right on sched….

Rondo can rest til March…
same with Ray Ray and JO….
keep rolling at a nice mediocre 500 pace…
get the 7th seed…
get the rooks and bench plenty of mins
get Sterleone and ESPN to forget to notice us
All good…

Then flip the switch…. and go after #18

temper predictions. certainly

It is still early and a ton can and will happen between now and the end of the season. Both good AND bad.

Still J99 has a valid point that you can use these games to assess the upside potential of players and 5-man units, when healthy.
