Ainge Argues Semantics, Makes A Point
Ainge discussed the preseason Rajon Rondo rumors on WEEI.
Quick hits from Danny Ainge - Boston Celtics Blog - ESPN Boston
"I sat down with Rondo when he got back into town, when the lockout ended, and I just told him the truth of what was going on. And that was it," said Ainge. "I've had conversations since -- I told him exactly what was happening...
"There are stories that come out later that try to dispute what I said [about not trying to trade Rondo at a season-opening] press conference, but I stand by that. I was not trying to trade Rajon Rondo. There's a big difference between trying to acquire a player and trying to trade a player. I know that some people say, 'Oh, that's just semantics.' No it's not. Rondo knows what I was trying to do, and he knows I wasn't shopping him around and trying to trade him, like has been reported. There's a big difference."
First of all, he's absolutely correct that there's a big difference between "shopping" a guy and pursuing an upgrade with your only viable trade chip (Rondo). Of course, without further evidence, you have to either take him at his word or not.
Personally I believe that Danny legitimately does like Rondo a lot and sees a lot of potential greatness in the young All Star. I also believe that Danny has no problem trading anyone to any team and will do so with no tears. The only player I couldn't see traded is Paul Pierce and I think that has more to do with the owners and his age and contract than Danny.
So how long will Rondo remain a Celtic? For as long as he's a better option than something else Ainge can find. That might mean for 10 years or it might only be 10 more days.

Time to move on...
The media need a story. The media like to write about a disgruntled Rondo or last year, a ‘heartbroken’ Rondo with the trade of Perk. It all makes for a nice story about his “emotions” but in the mean time Rondo has come out of the gates like a man on a mission this year.
It’s early but his free throws are better, his outside shot might actually make a defense defend him and his passing is still among the league’s best. That’s the real story that matters.
wrong post I know
I can read the Garnett weei article on the site, but can only comment thru sbnation, which does not show it.
Love Garnetts attitude. Also sounds like although JaJuan is listening to KG, he is not able to apply the teaching.

Just saw that Paul Westphal was fired. (http://trib.in/xHMyNW). He loses a few games with a lousy team and disgruntled player and he’s fired. Westphal is known as a good coach.
Compare this to us keeping Doc when times were bad.
"I don't come to play, I come to WIN"--Larry Bird
"Criminally Negligent Officiating"--Tommy Heinsohn
Westphal is a good basketball guy.
So yes, I think he’s a good coach. Just because he couldn’t get through to that team doesn’t mean he’s a bad coach. Sometimes the “fit” just isn’t there.
Hopefully Doc will give him a job on his staff.

go danny, go. what counts is the trust between danny, the players, doc, and the owners and that to be there. rondo signed a contract that was reasonable to him and the team. i truly believe that perk would still be here if a team friendly contract was “perkable.” we got hit with bad luck with green’s health. the fogeys are what they are and injuries seem to slow them more than age. at least they entertain and play the game in a professional and smart manner.
Danny is doing a a bad job managing this team.
Time to replace him.

He hung another banner in the rafters, and nearly a second.
I’d say he’s doing alright.

Nearly a second?
You mean they hung the second banner but was robbed by the refs in Game 7 a couple years back!!! 21 FTs on the 4th quarter, distasteful night…
I like it
Danny actually seemed honest. He basically did admit he was trying to acquire CP3, as opposed to trading Rondo just for the sake of trading him. And I don’t think it’s inaccurate that people really did believe that Danny felt that Rondo had overstayed his welcome in Boston. Otherwise, they’re probably thinking, why not just have more faith in Rondo since he’s on such a good contract, and such and such?
I learned how to make a sig just so it can say "DFA Darnell MacDonald". That means it must happen.
Not sure we can't take it to mean Danny thought Rondo "overstayed his welcome."
Maybe, maybe not, but it’s speculation.
But he’s being honest about the fact that he want Chris Paul, and obviously Rondo was the only chance he had of making that happen. But he’s right, there’s a big difference between saying “I’d trade Rondo for Chris Paul”, and “I want to trade Rondo.”

I think there was a strategic element to what Danny was doing.
The following is speculation on my part. But it fits all the data that we know of.
As became realized by the Trade That Would Be Nullified™, the Lakers obviously were trying to get CP3 to combine him with Kobe and Bynum for a very potent Big 3 – that would be a HUGE upgrade for them, given their mediocre backcourt. Yes, they would have given up some of their front court advantage. But they would finally be a much more balanced, complete unit from front to back.
Danny almost certainly new that was going on. So even if he would much rather have kept Rondo, strategically, if he trades Rondo to NOH for CP3, he still has a top PG and LA would not. In other words, whether or not CP3 is or is not ‘better’ than Rondo or whether Danny wanted Rondo more or less would not be the driver. They are both great and if you can’t have one, then having the other is great. And if you have to swap them to keep one of them out of LA’s hands, that’s what you do.
I think that explains why he was willing to also throw in Green and the pick. In basketball terms, that was a huge amount to be offering for CP3. I think Danny was willing to pay that premium because he was desperately trying to prevent LA from getting CP3.
As we all know now, LA was indeed trying to get him and for a very brief time, won the deal.
Again, this is speculation, but it would not surprise me to find that at that point, Danny got on the phone to Wyc and said, “Wyc, you gotta stop this deal! Get on the phone to the other owners and put the heat on Stern to stop it!”
And lo, the deal was stopped. CP3 ended up going to the Clippers, and Rondo stayed here.
So viewed in those terms, Danny could be very honestly saying he would rather have Rondo than any other PG in the whole world – yet still felt strategically compelled to try to swap him for CP3.
NBA Officiating - Corrupt? Incompetent? Which is worse? Does it matter? It sucks.
OK, I know as Celics fans we all hate the Lakers...
But it would barely affect the C’s at all if the Lakers got CP3, especially if they traded Odom and Gasol, since we are in different conferences.
Pedey: Dear Playstation, So MLB the Show '09 says I can't hit the high and inside, huh? That's ridiculous, ask Ramon.
Ramon: Yeah, he can hit it. In fact, if I were to die today and went to some weird...(grabs script) some weird limbo afterlife, where I can gaze at one thing for eternity. Dustin's swing, or my daggers? (DAUGHTERS!) daughter's first steps, I would choose that swing.
Lazer Show: I can hit that pitch!

Off topic but
A true Celtic fan would hate the Lakers, right? My friend rebuttals and claim that a true Celtic fan is fairness…so he would root for the Lakers over Heat/Grizzlies, since on his list he hates them more than the Lakers.
I like the fact that the whole Celtics organization looks like one big family
No coach goes so public about his players and no GM ever goes public about all his moves and all his ideas like Doc and Danny. Correct me if I’m wrong but it also seems as Doc is a lot closer to his players than any other coach in the league…
He's widely known as a player's coach.
A guy who gets on their level, and understands things from their perspective. So yes, there is a great deal of respect there. And that’s not just this team, because other teams of his have said the same thing.
Maybe it didn’t work out in Orlando, and yes he was Coach of the single worst season a Celtics team has had, but through all that, what you never heard, not once, was any players saying they didn’t like playing for him. And many (West, Jefferson) since have talked about how great it was to play for him.
I’m not saying he’s the greatest Coach ever, I question his rotations at time, I’m not sure he’s the best at developing talent, but what I am sure of, is there might not be anyone in the league better at understand and reaching his players.
