After being cut by the Celtics earlier in the month, summer league standout and fan favorite Dionte Christmas has agreed to play in Russia this winter.

Leandro Barbosa is signed, but he’s not yet with the Celtics. Doc Rivers said tonight he doesn’t expect him until the club returns to Boston on Sunday. The C’s are off tomorrow as they travel to Albany for a Saturday exhibition game against the Knicks. They host the 76ers at the TD Garden on Sunday. Asked where the 6-3 Barbosa will fit in to the Celt scheme, Rivers said, "I don’t know yet. I haven’t seen him, don’t know the condition he’s in or anything like that. we’ll just wait and see. I love what he’s done.

He's been around the league for a long time and even won 6th man of the year back in 06-07. But if you need an update on what Barbosa brings these days, here's a quick refresher.

Doc Rivers hinted at Barbosa signing yesterday

If you read between the lines of what Doc Rivers said yesterday, you can tell they were already working on bringing in Barbosa.

"We're always looking. Every team is always looking. If nothing comes, does that bother us? No. It'd be great to get another guy at any position. Obviously, at [point guard] it would help, but we can't also forget that Avery [Bradley] is coming back too. We don't want to overdo the point guard thing."

Basically this is a lot like the draft in which you get talent first and then figure out how to fit it all together later. Is Barbosa a pure backup point guard? Nope. But having too many talented combo guards is a problem we're willing to live with.

I'm guessing that the team has seen enough of Terry's ball handling to feel comfortable with him bringing the ball up and they will get creative with letting guys like Barbosa and Bradley bring the ball across half court and initiating plays through Pierce, Green, and even the high post centers (KG, Darko, etc.).

Oh yeah, and since Rondo's going to be playing 35 min a game and more, we're not talking about a huge role here (knocking furiously on wood).

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, the Celtics have signed Leandro Barbosa to a one-year deal.

Celtics open to adding a veteran

Doc Rivers is always open to adding a veteran that can help.

Rivers said the team still plans to keep 15 players and is open to someone from the outside if a cheap veteran can help this team at any position, not just a backup ball-handler. "Maybe the Heat will cut LeBron [James] or whoever," he said. "We’re always looking. Every team is always looking. If nothing comes, does that bother us?
