NBA Blog Preview: Golden St. Warriors

The Warriors made a big splash last year in trading for Andrew Bogut. So they've pretty much put all their eggs in that fragile-as-an-egg basket.

First of all, he's really good.

2012-2013 Golden State Warriors Preview: THE P WORD?! - Golden State Of Mind

Andrew Bogut: I bring you the best Warriors big man since... Rony Siekaly. (Well, okay at least the preseason 1994 hyped version of Siekaly that was coming off 5 straight double-double seasons. Look it up.) I know technically the Aussie big man was on the Warriors last season, so he's not a new addition. But seeing how Bogut played as many minutes last season for the Warriors as yours truly, I think he qualifies. If he can give the Dubs some of the pre-Warriors 1994 Siekaly (the 16-11 variety) the Warriors have a great shot at the P WORD.

Unfortunately, he isn't always available to show how good he is.

Golden State Warriors offseason review: It all depends on Andrew Bogut - SBNation.com

The problem is that Bogut is seemingly never healthy these days. Ever since he suffered a gruesome elbow injury late in the 2010 season, he has missed games with a variety of ailments. The elbow continued to bother him in a disappointing 2010-11 season, and a fractured ankle kept him out of action for all of last year. Last week, Warriors general manager Bob Myers said that Bogut still hasn't been cleared for 5-on-5 action. If I'm a Warriors fan, I'm concerned.

And what happens when he inevitably goes down? Not pretty.

The depth behind Bogut is just awful. The Warriors are already openly talking about finding a way out from under Andris Biedrins next summer. Tyler and Ezeli are really raw. The 10-20 minutes per game when Bogut is on the bench will be terrifying, especially if the team is restructured to maximize his gifts. The drop-off is pretty similar to Dwight Howard-Jordan Hill in L.A.

A lot depends on a not-very-dependable center in Golden State.
