With Jeff Green a game time decision tonight and Chris Wilcox still battling the flu, the Celtics have recalled Kris Joseph from the Maine Red Claws. He'll suit up tonight against the Portland Trailblazers.
Per team's press release.
Joseph, a 6’7 forward, averaged 25.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 block in two games while on assignment. He made his NBA debut against the Milwaukee Bucks and recorded one rebound and one assist in three minutes of action on November 2.
Jeff Green's swollen knee probably has a lot to do with this move. Not to mention overall depth issues with Rondo out and Wilcox sick.
The coach opened up a can of worms with his four letter word.

Yesterday, Kris Joseph practiced with the Celtics. Yes, he's still assigned to the Maine Red Claws along with Fab Melo. However, because of the new one-to-one affiliation between the Claws and Celtics, they can now shuttle players back and forth as many times as they want.
So, with the Red Claws not playing again until Friday night, the C's elected to bring Joseph and Melo back up to be around the team. "They don't have a game, and we don't have a lot of players," coach Doc Rivers said. "The greatest part about [the single-team affiliation with the Red Claws] is it's an hour-and-a-half drive, and they can drive up and practice and go back home -- I don't know what [Joseph] calls home, Boston or Maine, but it's been a pretty good thing so far for us."
Apparently Doc said that he didn't need any more bigs to practice with, so Melo wasn't necessary.

He's getting close. He's been hitting the weight room and the film room equally as hard. The shoulders are getting stronger and the tough as nails two guard vows to be a smarter player when he returns.
One area of the game that Brandon Bass has needed to work on is rebounding. I would imagine this being something that Doc Rivers pointed to as one of his primary roles on this team. The good news is that despite fluctuating minutes (sharing the rotation with Jared Sullinger) he's putting up solid rebounding numbers.
Though his basic rebounding figure might be down from 6.2 per game to 5.7 so far this season (it's still early and we're still dealing with a relatively small sample size), other numbers indicate better returns for Bass. He's seen a respectable jump in the percentage of offensive rebounds he's grabbing this season, up to 8.8 this season from 6.3 last season. Additionally, the total percentage of rebounds he's securing this season is up from 11.5 last season to 12.4 this season.
If he could focus on the rebounding and hitting that elbow jumper, that's about all I really need from Bass at this point. Anything else would be gravy.
Rondo has been impressive during his streak, and in particular had a pretty good week last week. Just not quite good enough to win Player of the Week.
Fresh off tying John Stockton's 37-game double-digit assist streak on Sunday in Orlando, Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo was nominated for Player of the Week, but was edged in the Eastern Conference by Atlanta's Al Horford.
"It’s just a different style of play," said Terry, whose longest streak of double-digit assists lasted all of three games in 2003. "Now, it’s a lot more difficult to get those assists per se as in the ’80s. If you look at the style of play, it was up-and-down, run-and-gun. Now, there are much more intricate defenses. There’s also the zone defense, so it makes it a lot tougher to get assists. So, that makes his feat a lot more amazing."
An interesting argument.

Pro Basketball Talk Paul Pierce is playing more like Ray Allen this season
A lot of comments in the post game recap centered around how poorly Jeff Green played. Doc saw things a little differently.
After registering a season-high 17 points in Friday’s win over Oklahoma City, Jeff Green scored 1 point on 0-for-9 shooting. "I thought Jeff played great, he just didn’t score," Rivers said. "He blocked shots, rebounded, just played a good floor game for us. He missed some makeable shots and you can’t do anything about that."
That's fair. If the coach is ok with his effort, then who am I to argue? It is interesting that he doesn't mention defense but perhaps that is reading too much into a quick quote. Or perhaps Doc is just trying to build Jeff up some. Regardless, I hope he can keep filling up the stat sheets AND hitting some of those makable shots in the future.
One is one of the most respected coaches in the league and the other is one of the youngest and least experienced. But Big Baby is cool with his new coach (without being disrespectful to his old one).
"Different guys," Davis said of the two coaches. "Doc is more of a military-minded kind of guy, and Jacque is more of a Gandhi kind of guy — soft but powerful. Doc’s more, ‘Get the job done,’ and Jacque Vaughn is more the kind of guy who will ask you, ‘Would you feel comfortable getting the job done?’ I think that’s different with players. But in my system, I think I just feel better functioning in Jacque’s system. Doc wasn’t the kind of guy to pat you on your back and say, ‘Good job, man.’ He’s more like, ‘OK, move on.’ In a way that’s positive, but some players are different. "Jacque’s a different kind of guy. He pats you on your back — good job. That’s his motivation. But at the same time he still holds you accountable if you’re doing things wrong."
I think this is actually a very mature observation by Big Baby. Some coaching styles just suit people differently than others and Glen was never a perfect fit for Doc. Glad to hear he's getting what he needs where he is.

From the OKC blog Welcome to Loud City in their recap..
The other big surprise/disappointment was how poorly the Thunder defense performed against a mediocre Celtics offense. To be sure, sometimes teams get hot, and Boston certainly made a good share of baskets on the night, hitting 48.8% from the floor and 9-17 from 3-point range. However, on this night the Thunder seemed disinterested in playing the kind of intense defense that we had seen in the past few games, and the Celtics used the extra space to their advantage. Boston only averages 97 points per outing, yet the Thunder gave up 87 points in the final 3 quarters. OKC's poor defense was clearly a determining factor in the game's final outcome.
The Celtics did get hot (in particular from outside). But I suppose you can give an assist to the OKC defense, or seemingly lack thereof as well.
Paul Pierce is a natural born scorer, that much we've established time and again. It is interesting, however, that his offense is continuing to evolve over time. In particular, he's using screens more often now. (check the link for the actual numbers)
Pierce's increase in shots generated off screens has leapt from one of his least-used play-types in 2009-10 (when he was more of a pick-and-roll guy) to his most common method of attack this season. Pierce is clearly still getting used to that increased activity and is doing much of his damage in transition (when he's got familiar room to operate, including the ability to step back for 3-point shots). And as his spot-up numbers suggest (and the eyes have confirmed over recent games), Pierce can still free himself for step-back jumpers against even the most athletic defenders (like Kevin Durant).
As Forsberg states, it doesn't matter really how he scores, he's going to flat out score.
Oh Captain my Captain.
Rivers told his staff about the 32-minute limit before Friday's game, and even that seemed like pushing it. "I know it’s hard," said Rivers. "Going into the game, I told our coaches that 32 is our number for Kevin tonight. Two minutes extra -- because I thought we were going to need it. [The Thunder went] small early and, it’s funny, the last two teams, it’s like no one wants to go small against us, because they look at Jeff [Green] and Paul [Pierce], and it’s almost like they are avoiding small lineups. So we prepared for small, but [Oklahoma City] didn’t go to it until that one stretch. Then they started making a run with it and, let’s be honest here, right when we had to take Kevin out, but we had no choice. Gotta do it."
Interesting that teams would be avoiding the smallball lineup since most fans have become increasingly impatient with it.

Here's Doc on the latest struggles and how to fix them.
Celtics coach Doc Rivers said more intensity is great, but it has to be harnessed properly and it must be combined with a renewed focused on executing the game plan in order for Boston to correct its lingering issues, particularly on defense. "I think we’ve got to do our coverages better, just bottom line," said Rivers. "Harder and all that -- that sounds great. That’s what everyone says when you lose: 'You’ve got to play harder.’ Well, we’ve got to play smarter, we have to know our coverages better, and, when that happens, everybody is on the same page and it allows our rotations to be freer, it allows our bigs to get back to the paint."
All I hear is "coachspeak coachspeak coachspeak." Though, to be fair, ...he's a coach. And that stuff generally is what the team needs to hear. I can't say anything he's saying is wrong, I'm just in a sour mood because of the recent struggles. You know what would brighten my day more than a Black Friday Doorbuster deal? A win over the Thunder.
Steve Bulpett has an article today on Jeff Green getting ready to face his old team for the first time. Basically he's not really all the emotional about it.
An interesting aside noted that Jeff Green and Kendrick Perkins got a chance to get to know each other last year.
The two got to chat last year during the lockout at Rondo’s charity game at Harvard. "That was my first time," Green said. "We talked for a little bit. We actually had a great conversation. "He’s a good guy, and I respect him. He’s an awesome big. To me, he’s one of the best bigs in the game, because he plays both ends hard — and that’s what I like. I respect him for that. We had a chance to shoot the (expletive) a little bit. We talked about how people reacted to the trade and some other stuff. That’s about it."
I'll bet they had some good stories to compare.
Over on the Point Forward blog, they are debating some issues and one of them is the topic of Boston's defense. As in, will it get better as the season progresses? Ben Golliver says yes.
Call me in May on all Celtics questions. Among the elite tier of contenders, Boston is near the top when it comes to most new rotation pieces. ... The track record of four straight seasons with top-five defensive efficiency ratings overwhelms three weeks worth of below-average results. We know the core guys can lock down, especially Garnett as you mentioned, and we know Boston is always a hot spot for veteran additions when the calendar gets toward playoff push time and/or the trade deadline. If they’re not a top-10 defense by season’s end, at minimum, I’ll be shocked.
That's pretty much where I'm at too. Though at some point you have to wonder when the gas is really going to run out for this team. It will likely happen before I am mentally (or emotionally) prepared for it.
The team's current struggles are frustrating but we have a lot to be thankful for as Celtics fans. Like 17 big reasons hanging in the rafters with the recent memory of 2008 and the last few years of top notch basketball.
I also wanted to say how thankful I am for Celtics fans in general and in particular all the wonderful readers, commentors, and chatters here at CelticsBlog. You are the best.
God bless and Happy Thanksgiving.
Home cookin' does wonders for the Celtics defense.
The defense does not travel well. While Boston has been solid defensively on its home court, allowing 98.9 points per 100 possessions (14th), the same has not been true on the road. Away from home, the Celtics have allowed 106.5 points per 100 possessions (25th in the league).
Thankfully they are playing at home tonight.
Everyone knows that the Celtics are better when Kevin Garnett is on the floor. But Zach Lowe points out that when the big man rotation produces a lineup of both Bass and Sullinger on the court together, they have a lot of trouble on defense.
Breaking news: Boston can't defend without Kevin Garnett on the floor. They've allowed 94.6 points per 100 possessions when KG plays and 114.2 when he sits, per NBA.com. That's about as large as the current gap between the league's best and worst defenses. The Bass-Sullinger big-man combo has been especially flammable; Boston has allowed an unthinkable 139 points per 100 possessions in 41 minutes with those two on the floor. Over their last two games, Doc Rivers has essentially eliminated that two-man combination, using Chris Wilcox as a fourth big man to break them up. If that doesn't hold, expect Boston to look aggressively in free agency (Kenyon Martin?) and the trade market for another big.
No wonder we're seeing Wilcox more often. The first time I saw Sully and Bass on the court together I thought "...well, that's ...interesting." Chalk it up to an early season experiment by Doc to try to get two guys minutes.

Nothing like garbage time to help a rookie get his groove on.
Sullinger erupted for 14 of his team-high 16 points in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 103-83 loss to the Detroit Pistons. Four of those field goals came in the final six minutes and accounted for the final four assists as Rondo scrambled to finish with 10 helpers.
Fearful of giving up another offensive board, Sullinger pushed Kris Humphries from behind, drawing a whistle that gave the Nets the ball back without even having to fight for the rebound. Celtics coach Doc Rivers had seen enough. Sullinger, a rookie whose calling card is cleaning the glass, didn't just get the hook, he spent the rest of the night on the bench. "I just told all the guys: If you get an offensive rebound on you, you're coming out and [Sullinger] was the first," explained Rivers.
He learns quick. Steal of the draft.
Glad to see Kris Joseph starting to get some run in Maine - even if the games haven't really started yet.
Joseph was one of the main attractions as the Maine Red Claws played an intrasquad scrimmage Saturday night at Edward Little High. He was one of the three leading scorers with 19 points, with Micah Downs and Wright. "It was cool," said Joseph, who got little playing time with Boston. "I haven't played up and down like this in a while."
If there's one thing young guys like him need, it is more reps with good coaching - which is pretty much the whole point of the D-League.
I fully expect to see Melo getting some nods for the Greg Stiemsma award of best defensive player in the D-League by the end of the year too.
Just got this email and thought I'd pass it along.
Not sure if you had heard but there is a brand new NBC sports radio station in Boston. They just hired me and Jeff! We are bringing a variation of the old "Celtic Pride" back.
What's very cool for people in their 30's and up is that we are going to take full advantage of the old NBA on NBC. We are calling the show "NBA on NBC" and we have gotten permission to even bring the old NBA on NBC music back. The show will debut this Saturday from 10-noon.
Could you PLEASE pub this? We are so excited, grateful and humbled to have been asked to join NBC but we realize that we would not have earned our following without you and the people of Celtics blog! Could you please help us spread the word?
Happy to oblige.
We're four weeks away from the return of one of the biggest fan favorites on the team, but don't expect the old Avery Bradley when he comes back. His rehab and recovery not only included time in the gym, but also hours studying and watching tape.

Lee finished the night with 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting to go along with a team-high nine rebounds, three assists, and some steady defense against a strong corps of Brooklyn guards. It was a positive sign for a player who has been plagued by inconsistency of late -- something every Boston role player has seemed to have dealt with at one time or another this season -- and it was welcome production for a Celtics team playing without Rajon Rondo.
Doc is happy.
"Courtney just came out and played," said Rivers. "He didn't think about if he was starting or not starting, or how many minutes, who's playing. He played basketball tonight, and when he does that, he's a great basketball player. And I thought, defensively, he was our best defensive player on the floor. I thought he was fantastic."
He's going to be an important part of this team this year.
Kevin Garnett is so good at defense, that he knows everything the other team is going to do - perhaps even before they do.
"The funny thing is, I wish he would be quiet on the floor and not call out your plays," the Nets coach said in a bemused and complimentary tone Thursday morning prior to his team’s nationally-televised contest against KG’s Celtics. "He’s seen so much. We’ll call a play and he’ll say, ‘Joe is going over here and Deron is going here.’ It’s not funny anymore, OK? "As much as (Rajon) Rondo quarterbacks their offense, (KG) quarterbacks their defense. ... I like every now and then when we’ll surprise him with something, and then maybe he’ll look at the bench and curse the other coaches out, not me."
Avery Johnson is a funny coach. I think I like him.
I gotta say, as much as I loved Dooling and company flexin' on the bench last year - when Brandon Bass breaks out the big guns, it makes those celebrations look kinda silly. Terry's no slouch either - plus he's flashing that new tattoo of his.
So it might not catch on like the "Flexing" that Keyon Dooling and Marquis Daniels created last season, but Brandon Bass and Jason Terry have their own little flexing celebration of sorts this year. You might have noticed Bass and Terry striking a muscle-like pose and bumping each other following one of Bass's hard-earned buckets around the hoop. It turns out it dates back to the two seasons that Bass and Terry spent together in Dallas from 2007-2009.
I completely forgot that Terry and Bass were once teammates before. That's pretty cool.

Leandro Barbosa has been here for what, 15 minutes? So you'll excuse him if he isn't well versed in the Celtics playbook yet. But Doc needed a guy to come in and just play because he needed him and Leandro has answered the call.
We didn't run much, because he doesn't know much. Everything was basically pick and rolls. We told him to just keep attacking to the basket, and we'll figure it out from there."
Barbosa had it figured pretty well. He wanted to keep up the pace and avoid as much of the intricate halfcourt stuff as possible.
"For me it's much easier and I feel a lot more comfortable playing that way," he said. "But I'm getting comfortable, too, with the plays. The coaches have been working out with me on the side. I'm almost there.
I say don't teach him a single play. Just let him ball.
Rajon Rondo is our MVP, so going without him for a long period of time would be terrible. On the other hand, I'd gladly let him take a few days off to heal properly rather than risk a larger injury.
Rajon Rondo’s status has not been determined for Thursday night’s game against the Brooklyn Nets after he injured his right ankle in the third quarter of a 98-93 victory over the Utah Jazz Wednesday night. "I mean, [an injury is] going to happen," coach Doc Rivers. "He’s not going to play all 82, I doubt it. It’d be nice. You know how I think, the next guy, just somebody, has to step up and we have to figure it out."
He is now listed as day to day with a sprained right ankle, but he was minute-to-minute for a while last night as Rivers debated whether to put him back on the parquet. "Iffy," Rivers said afterward, "and I just felt like (it) was too early to take that chance."
Get well soon.

Chicago Tribune Jazz visit suddenly hot Celtics
It isn't who starts but who finishes. Ben Rohrbach looked at the lineups for the closing minutes of each of the games so far and sees a trend. Lately it has been Jason Terry and Brandon Bass in the lineup to close out games.
Who closes games might mean more than who starts them, but as Rivers continues to favor Terry and Bass alongside the Big Three over Lee and Sullinger in both situations, he might put an end to the discussion altogether. Then again, the Celtics face a big, athletic shooting guard in Gordon Hayward when they host the Jazz on Wednesday night, so Rivers might start Lee at the 2 — or even Green as he did during the preseason — and then ride the hot hand down the stretch. Of course, he’s been pretty good at that so far this year, too.
I still think Rivers will tinker until Bradley gets back. By the he might have enough understanding of his team to make a call on the lineups. He could (and probably should) have a regular staring lineup and set rotation by Christmas or so.
Kevin Garnett wants him to be more of a(n) [expletive] on the court and pretty much everyone wants Jeff Green to be more aggressive. Green politely acknowledges those critiques (which almost sounds like it goes against KG's advice, but he's talking ON the court remember) and vows to be better about it.
For Doc's part, he's preaching patience with Jeff.
Doc Rivers believes it will happen, adding that people need to cut Green some slack after his surgery to repair an aortic aneurysm. "I think the more comfortable he gets, he’ll be that," the coach said. "I think we’ve just got to keep remembering that he took a year off, so it’s just going to take him time. I think he’s getting it. He’s got to learn where to fit and be aggressive. But I still think even if he was all that he’d still struggle. He’d be up and down right now. I don’t think you sit out a year and just come back and play great."
Hopefully. It is concerning for me that he's heard these criticisms his whole career and has yet to fully embrace that aggressive mentality. I suppose you can learn how to do it more, but it sure is easier when it is already part of a player's nature and instinct. We'll see.
The last man added to the roster appears to be having an immediate impact in the rotation.
With Rondo currently leading the NBA in minutes per game (40.8), Rivers is looking for ways to reduce his floor time without sacrificing the Celtics' production. As he alluded to after last Friday's loss to the 76ers, Rondo coming off the floor has basically doomed Boston's offense the way Kevin Garnett's absence has crippled its defense. But Barbosa on Monday kept things clicking better than he has for the majority of the season, and it resulted in Rondo playing just over 37 minutes (a number that'll help Rivers sleep a little better at night). In addition to scoring his own points, he found Garnett for a jumper at the 7:09 mark, a point in the frame when points were crucial as the Bulls were in the midst of scoring on four of five straight possessions.
Things will be reshuffled again when Avery Bradley returns, but it is nice that Barbosa has shown that he can fill in at times to give Rondo a little bit of rest.

RealGM Celtics Pacing An Aging Kevin Garnett
The biggest worry from the first few games of the year (for me at least) has been the lack of defensive dominance that we have all grown accustomed to with this team. Perhaps last night was the first step in getting back to those basics.
The Bucks posted 10 first-quarter field goals (on 14 attempts) within 5 feet of the hoop and Samuel Dalembert basically held a dunk party in front of (and on top of) Boston's defense. The Celtics cleaned up their interior woes on the fly, limiting Milwaukee to 14-of-29 shooting from inside 5 feet the rest of the way. Keep in mind that the Celtics held opponents to 55.8 percent shooting inside of 5 feet last season (third best in league), but this season that number had skyrocketed to 63.7 percent (third worst in the league entering Saturday's game).
It is amazing how many faults are covered up with good defense. Sometimes that takes time to refine. We've got all season.
Last year it was rough to see Pierce start off the year hurt (and end the year hobbled). But so far this year he's been the Truth that we all know and love.
Saturday's fourth-quarter shootout with Monta Ellis is perhaps the most glaring example of Pierce's scoring exploits, but his go-ahead 3-pointer with just over 2½ minutes to play against the Washington Wizards helped guide Boston to its first win of the season last weekend. And then there was Friday night. Even though the C's ultimately fell to the 76ers, Pierce was one of the only ones giving Boston a fighting chance. He scored 10 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter on 4-of-6 shooting, splashing a 3-pointer, a jump shot, a pair of layups, and a free throw during the final frame.
We just need more contributions from the bench to keep him fresh and healthy all year long.
Sometimes you just have to get away.
"It’s a big win for us, because we haven’t been playing well," said Paul Pierce [stats] after going for 25 points. "Tonight we grinded it out. We were down early, down double figures. "I told the guys that sometimes a road trip can bring you together — you know, an early road trip like this against two good quality teams (the Celtics are in Chicago tomorrow night) who’ve been playing well. Maybe this is just what the doctor ordered."
The Celtics better not take the Bulls too lightly. They aren't exactly killing teams that are missing their best players this year.

Grantland Does Joey Crawford Really Hate Tim Duncan? A Scientific Investigation
The topic of "hating" other teams came up in a recent Rondo interview, and while he said that "hate" is a strong word, he doesn't really feel the need to be friends with opponents.
"That should be everyone’s mentality. We are competing -- there’s no friends on the court. Even if you were playing against a family member like your mother, you still go out there and try to beat her. It’s just a matter of competing. We love to win, I’m very competitive. Anything I do, I want to win. I don’t have time for friends. I don't talk to a lot of these guys in the offseason, so why I should talk to them on the court and try to be their friend?
That's old school. It isn't always pretty, but it makes sense.

Lucid Sports Fan Why can't there be assists on made free throws?
You knew he had to break out of his shooting slump at some point. It was great to see Jason Terry start filling his role as bench scorer.
Terry scored a season-high 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting, adding three assists and some important defense down the stretch of both regulation and the extra session. "Yeah, they've been begging for it, man, and I was finally able to give it to them tonight," Terry happily proclaimed of his trademark plane celebration he broke out at the Garden for the first time during regular-season play. "The JET don't just come out for nothing. I mean, we're losing, you won't see no runway, none of that. But, we needed a spark, we needed some energy, and the fans responded well to it."
Now about Courtney Lee's slump....
Continuing the "effort" theme from this morning...
"I thought Chris Wilcox saved the game for us, singlehandedly, with his effort. And I thought it was obvious. He didn’t do anything but played hard and played with great effort. And I thought that that leadership led everybody else into doing. Kevin, always, I always exclude him because he always plays the right way. But we’ve got to get more guys that play harder, better. I don’t care about ‘well,’ you know, I don’t care if we play ‘well’ or not, because that’s just human. If you can make shots or not, it happens. But we just have to play with a better focus and we’ve got to run our schemes better."
You've heard the phrase, "it's not who starts, but who finishes." Well Doc turns that a bit on its ear.
"No, it's funny, I was going to say that question has always bugged me. It doesn't bother you, but it's who finishes. It's who plays the most, really. It's not even who starts or who finishes. It's who is involved in the game the most on a daily basis. ... I understand the question, media-wise, because [it's] the starting lineup. But, if I was a player, that would have been something I would have not worried about. Now, if I hadn't played at all, then I would worry."
Sounds like Darko should worry a bit.

What can I say? I can't get enough of the Wizards blogs.
What's the status of the Celtics over the past week?
Practice, practice, practice. So far all they’ve been able to do is focus on three bad games (two losses and one squeaker win against a team missing their two best players—the Wizards). They aren’t playing defense the way they want to, and they have to face Doc’s disappointed face and Kevin Garnett’s terrifying glare. Methinks they’ll be ready for Wednesday.
See more at the link above.

Bleacher Report What Would It Take for the Boston Celtics to Win the Championship?
It was supposed to be a coming out party for #8, but he finished 0-4 from the field with only three rebounds and one steal in the loss to the Heat on Tuesday. After some opening night jitters, I'm betting Jeff Green lives up to the hype tonight.
As expected, the plan for Fab Melo is to give him lots of time to develop in the D-League.
"We like what we've seen in Fab so far in practice in September when he was here before the season. Fab puts in his work, he's working hard in the weight room. We need to get him stronger, and Fab is a late bloomer in basketball. He took up the game late and he's got a lot to learn about the game itself. He has good athletic instincts, but he does need to learn about execution, both offensively and defensively ... we hope to get Fab to Portland, Maine [with the Red Claws of the D-League] and get a lot of playing time this year and a lot of individual instruction. We see him as a guy that could be a contributing center, even a starting center, in this league at some point in his career."
Exactly the right plan. He's always available for an emergency injury situation, but other than that, his timeline is set to start at least a year from now. Maybe longer.
Speaking of the Red Claws, they'll be having the D-League draft tonight.
There are a lot of reasons (read: excuses) you can give for the Celtics poor first game defensive effort. New teammates, new season, long layoff, etc. But hommie don't play 'dat. And by hommie I mean Paul Pierce.
But Pierce was having none of it. The Celtics were flat out bad defensively in allowing 54 percent shooting and 120 points in a 13-point loss, and Pierce wasn’t going to sugarcoat that. "As individuals, we’ve got to take the blame because we were out there," Pierce said. "There’s no way we should give up (120) points no matter what type of defensive scheme we run. We might as well sit on the sideline and watch them run up and down the court if we’re going to give up 120 points."
Rondo was happy to point the blame back at himself and the core players as well.
"It wasn't just those guys," Rondo said. "It was myself, Kevin, who were thinking a lot. There was a stretch of the third quarter when I was thinking too much. It's not just the new guys, it's the core as well."
That's leadership and accountability. A good first step.
