Doc mourns the passing of his mentor

Sad day for basketball.

Rick Majerus passed away Saturday at the age of 64. He was one of Doc Rivers' earliest mentors.

Rivers, fighting back tears, briefly attempted to express his grief. “That’s a tough one for me. He’s the one who gave me my name,” Rivers said. “I knew before the game that he wasn’t going to make it through the night. I don’t want to talk much about it.”

Majerus famously bestowed the "Doc" nickname upon Rivers, whose given first name is Glenn, after Rivers showed up to a Marquette summer camp wearing a "Dr. J" Julius Erving T-shirt. Dubbed "Doc," the name has stuck throughout his basketball career.
