Celtics Net A Win, Rondo Sports A Headband

Former Mr. Kardashian approves of Rondo's fashion sense.

I didn't catch the game, so I'll link to someone that did.

Green Street " Fast Break: Rondo, headband of brothers take down Nets

Rajon Rondo has rarely worn a headband since NBA commissioner David Stern issued a rule against wearing the logo upside down (a slight to Lakers legend Jerry West) at the start of last season, but the Celtics point guard sported his good luck charm backwards against the Nets in a 107-94 win over the Nets. Perhaps Rondo needed a change of scenery after all the recent talk of him maybe getting … well, a change of scenery before the March 15 trade deadline (a notion C’s president Danny Ainge denied on Thursday). Whatever the case, the three-time All-Star floor general submitted his second straight sublime performance, amassing 14 points, 13 assists, five steals and two rebounds just two nights after recording his third triple-double of the season. Likewise, Kevin Garnett (20 points, 10 rebounds) — one of few Celtics regulars sans headband — continued his productive stretch, dropping at least 20 points and 10 rebounds in two straight games for the first time in exactly one year. Paul Pierce (27 points) led five C’s scorers in double figures.

I do believe that's three in a row. It would be just like this team to not lose until after the trade deadline, then take the foot off the gas thinking that they are "back" and can coast till the playoffs.

that was the first thing i checked… there was a shot of him when he looked to the side, and i saw the logo at the back of his headband was right side up.

Good game for everyone.

Am I the only one who cringes every time Dooling shoots… even when he’s wide open?

This guy can’t shoot for his life.

His percentages are good. But his form is wacko.

Whatever works.

That form does look odd...

but if it works best for him then so be it.

I remember years ago Jamal Wilkes and Jack Sikma both had weird shooting forms also,
But though they both had odd shooting forms also, it worked fine for them since they were both very good shooters.

Ahh ... big Jack Sikma - fond memories!

Sikma, Gus Williams, Dennis Johnson, John Johnson, Freddy Brown, Paul Silas – that 1979 Sonics team was awesome!

I would rather see him drive the ball to the rim then shoot three’s!!! His shot scares me.. I’d honestly rather see E’twuan shooting.

I agree it looks crazy - but he's shooting 37% from 3PT land so it's working for him somehow!

the Wilcox, Bass and Pietrus trio have a chance to really be a big weapon off the bench for the C’s the rest of the year so lets hope they can continue to produce.

I also thought Steamer looked good tonight at least on the defensive end of the court where he was very active.
If he gets some more steady playing time now with JO out for awhile he should only improve and the extra minutes should help him get in a better groove on the offensive end of the court also I assume.

Continue to love what I’m seeing from Bass. Developing a real liking for Bradley. Good to see Steamer out there.

Again, this team has all of the talent needed to play with anyone when they have their full game on. Yes, it was just the Nets, but we’ve struggled and lost against worst teams.

This team deserves a chance to have a run at the post-season. I think we will be pleasantly surprised. There’s not much out there for us to get at the trade deadline, and there’s no time to work an only marginally better player into the system in this compressed season.

Nice to have an easy victory for once

Tonight was reminiscent of old fashioned consistent Celtics basketball. They came out with energy and took over the game early. They had some sloppy periods during the 2nd half but the game was never in doubt.

Rondo played a great all around game and as a result the Celtics scored over 100 points again! Wilcox was great again and might make it much easier to forget not having JO. KG continued his great play and Pierce finally found his shot.

Even against a bad team such as the Nets it’s refreshing to see the Celtics play such a solid all around game. Hard to glean much from one game but it does put the thought of having Ray come off the bench as a possible option…

Quotes from the overrated Rajon Rondo -

I feel I’m the best at what I do, and that’s how I play it,"
"I’m the best, hands down. There’s no speculation. Not top three or top five, I’m the best."
"I’m not looking to be the best one year or to have people think you’re the best one year,’’ Rondo continued. "You’ve got to prove it every night. Every night somebody’s going to be gunning for that spot.’’

by warnerjohn on Mar 2, 2012 10:21 PM EST reply actions

Its just the Nets...

but the C’s did what they had to do and beat a less talented club.

KG continues to look good and young, Wilcox is really playing well and Pietrius had a nice night also that helped contribute to the win.

Considering we had a Steamer sighting tonight, the C’s won the game, are above 500 and have won 3 in a row I am thrilled …lol.

by fordescort on Mar 2, 2012 10:28 PM EST reply actions

main point is holding them to just 20 points in each of the first 2 periods

Scoring a hundred points on the Nets’ defense is no big thing (well, maybe for OUR offense). But the Nets do have a good offense and we shut them down in the first half and that set the tone for the game. Yes, we let them score 31 in the 3rd – but a lot of that was us being sloppy and letting them score several freebie points on turnovers. It was good that we then put the hammer down on defense in the 4th and didn’t let up until garbage minutes.

Yes, keep this group together. I think they will surprise the nay-sayers down the stretch, and into the playoffs. A strong close to the season is the only way we will entice any real free-agent talent to Boston in the off-season. Right now it would just be a blow-it-up fire sale with little rebuilding possible.

Pietrus is great on this team

Time to start thinking about starting him, let Ray come off the bench. The defense is way, way superior with Pietrus on the floor, no question about that. And of course, that makes the offense better too. And Pietrus is enough of a threat to keep the spacing intact too.

I dunno…. it’s debatable.

by JR99 on Mar 2, 2012 10:41 PM EST reply actions

I was thinking the same thing

Can’t really press with Ray. Ray deserves more shots. The bench needs someone to score. Pietrus is a force on that press (the press works with his length & athleticism).MP is a better defender & rebounder. He fights for rebounds. Whereas other guys seem to be frozen Pietrus is in there jumping, bumping, & scraping for that rebound. Pietrus could also wear down the other teams shooting guard early so Ray wouldn’t have to chase them as much = fresher legs for Ray to close the game. Doc could start Ray & then just sub him out early if the whole starter thing is gonna cause trouble. I’d rather see Ray getting those 10 shots than Dooling.

by Ibemebe on Mar 3, 2012 1:36 AM EST up reply actions

I'm pretty sure Ray is gone by March 15 and Pietrus likely starts the rest of the way--

Ray is the cheapest of the assets Danny’s trying to move and Pietrus is ready to slip into his spot.

No reason to upset Ray’s position until the deal is done, however.

I suppose there’s a possibility some contending team tries to pry Pietrus away instead, but I think the C’s would like to keep on his good side and have him return next year.

by clover on Mar 3, 2012 8:09 AM EST up reply actions

I doubt that happens

Personally, who starts vs comes off the bench is less important to me than the fact that I want Ray on the floor more.

MP is playing great, and he is a better rebounder than Ray. But otherwise his defense is only marginally better. In aggregate defensive plays, he is making 1.6 per 40 minutes versus Ray’s 1.2 – neither is near the top for our team in that category. Ray has a ton of experience in playing within our team defense and the aggregate team defensive results the last few years are proof of that.

Offensively, though – it isn’t really close. MP is an adequate outside shooter, but he is nowhere near the class of offensive weapon that Ray is. Ray is in the top 4-5 of SGs in almost every shooting % category. He is down in the pack only in ‘volume’ stats because in our offense he doesn’t get enough shots to lead there. But his point-per-minute production is way over Michael’s.

A big flaw in MP’s offensive game is that he simply never goes inside. He’s taken 110 3PT shots this year – and only 15 at the rim!!! Two of his rim shots were last night on fast-breaks. Take those away and you have a guy who just won’t attack through the paint and that is not good for our offense. By comparison, Ray Allen has taken 132 3PT shots and 57 at the rim. MP is big and athletic and should be able to execute that baseline delay slash that Ray (and lately Bradley too good effect) uses, but too often he opts to take the 3PT shot even when the baseline look is there. And Ray is both shooting better from outside and finishing at the rim better than Michael by a significant margin.

The net result is that, no matter who starts, I want Ray on the floor for more minutes.

All that said, I do agree with clover that Ray is the highest probability candidate to end up traded. I don’t want that to happen, but it is highly probable.

Rondo's headband is not just a joke

If you recall, back in 2010 he stopped wearing it because the league disallowed wearing headbands with upside-down logos. The fact that it’s back on his head COULD indicate that Rondo’s starting to toe the line more, trying to temper the stubborn rebelliousness which has been the one bane of his existence on this team. I.e., this could be actual good news.

Not that I think he can really change permanently. I don’t think that’s possible, on general principles (people rarely change who they are). But it is good news, anyway. Or could be.

Vs. NYK on Sunday

I hope and pray Rondo shuts down this “Jeremy Lin” media-hyped player on Sunday. Honestly getting tired on the dude and how everyone seems to be on his jock all of a sudden. And here I thought Ricky Rubio was gonna be the #1 PG for bandwagons to jump on…. I don’t deny Lin’s amazing skills, but they need to calm down on him for real. The hyping on big market teams is disgusting, and I swear all I can see on ESPN is these LeBron/Wade globe-trotting passes or the constant rant of “OMG teh LINSANITY!”, smh… Oh and I hope Rondo keeps that headband on since I recall that is when he was playing like RONDO!!

I have said this again and again, but signing dooling over delonte was a big mistake.

by Karasu on Mar 2, 2012 11:04 PM EST reply actions

Yes and no: Delonte is ages better than Dooling, but he is injury prone. None would be of help. And yes Moore should get Dooling’s minutes, but it really doesn’t matter because whoever thinks Dooling is staying a Celtic by the end of the season or even March 15 is insane!

Rondo vs. Deron Williams

FanFromMaine recently said that he would prefer Deron Williams over Rondo. I wonder if he still feels that way.

by chicagomaroon on Mar 2, 2012 11:39 PM EST reply actions

These great games by Rondo only highlight his refusal to play on other nights

It’s about consistency. Nobody argues that Rondo is not good when he plays the way Doc wants him to play.

by JR99 on Mar 2, 2012 11:44 PM EST up reply actions

The only thing that's really inconsistent about Rondo's play is his points scored.

And on this team, that’s kinda ‘normal’. Any given night a different set of players score all the points and any given player might do nothing in the points column. We’ve all seen Pierce, Ray & KG have games where they don’t score jack.

But Rondo’s assists are very steady. In 17 of 25 games he’s posted 8+ assists. In fact, he’s only recorded less than 6 in two games. He’s also grabbed 5+ rebounds in 14 games.

Heck, even in points, he’s hit double figures in 16 of his 25 games.

I think the whole ‘consistency’ rap is over-blown. I’m looking at the game logs of other top PGs and they all throw a ‘poor’ game every few – Deron Williams looked pretty lame tonight. He’s played 50% more games than Rondo (36) but has had 6 games with under 6 assists and only 20 with 8+. Yes, he scores more points instead of dealing assists. But even there he has his own inconsistencies – he was racking up the points like a beast for about 6 straight games – and then has stunk the last two nights. Even Chris Paul’s numbers are all over the place – 3 assists, 13 points against Portland and then three games later 9 assists and 38 against Denver.

The fans of each of their teams will always have someone screaming, “Why can’t they score 30+ every night?!”

NBA Officiating - Corrupt? Incompetent? Which is worse? Does it matter? It sucks.

by mmmmm on Mar 3, 2012 12:16 AM EST up reply actions

BS

I love Rondo as much as any of you but his effort is completely inconsistent. He takes nights off. Stops driving the lane. Gambles too much on D leading to getting burned by chumps like Kyrie Irving. And the part that drives me craziest, his constant need to make the Sportcenter highlight pass. He turns the ball over a ton, in crucial parts of the game, because of his need to make the “home run” play instead of the right play. Rondo would average 15 dimes a game if he’d just stop trying to be a highlight reel. See him for who he is, a mercurial genius who is perpetually flawed!

by kingtutts on Mar 3, 2012 12:32 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

chumps like irving...

I stopped reading your comment once u said that.

by AlexC on Mar 3, 2012 1:40 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

kingtutts -- I mostly agree with you

But calling Irving a chump is patently wrong. The kid is on his way to superstardom… very talented player. Gotta respect his game.

by JR99 on Mar 3, 2012 3:09 AM EST up reply actions

Sure do.

But Rondo took on D-Will and dominated and D-Will is much better than Irving at his current time in his young career.

I think your guys “inconsistency” complaint is mainly based on Rondo trying to let his other teammates do what they’ve done for years, lead. I will always say, KG, and Pierce still have a hard time Handing the reigns to Rondo. Saying Rondo doesn’t try or just doesn’t drive typically happens on a night where Pierce or KG take a huge amount of shots and miss most of them. At least that’s the pattern I’ve noticed. If I’m wrong, prove it with some stats. Otherwise, I’ll say it till I’m blue in the face. Rondo plays great when allowed and when other players are feeling it or want the ball, Rondo lets them. Then when those players fail, it’s all Rondo’s fault for not stepping up for his veteran inconsistent teammates.

by RR_The_Future on Mar 3, 2012 10:16 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

A few other issues regarding consistency

Think there are games where his effort is inconsistent though. Not just because he has a bad game but there are nights where he looks totally disinterested or frustrated and his energy level suffers as a result. Doc has commented when Rondo has a bad half that he has to keep telling him things will turn around and not to let his play suffer because of a few mistakes.

A couple things he is also fairly consistent at - as pointed out above he has 5+ rebounds in 14 games. Using 14 games as a standard of some level of consistency he also has 4+ turnovers in 14 games.

Unfortunately his horrid free throw % shows that he misses them consistently when compared to other NBA starting PG’s. And his anemic 3 pt % shows that his rate of conversion is deplorable on the few attempts he puts up.

TO’s, free throw shooting and 3 PT% are 3 areas where Rondo ranks at or near the bottom of the league for his position which spells inconsistency for executing in these phases of the game or consistently failing, whichever way anyone chooses to phrase it.

by warnerjohn on Mar 3, 2012 2:16 AM EST up reply actions

I totally agree about the FT shooting - that is Rondo's clear and obvious weakness.

I’m less concerned about the 3PT shooting. He has a decent enough outside shot that eventually defenses will have to account for it and his floor point production continues to be excellent.

But yes, if he could improve any one thing about his game – it’s free throws. If he could get consistently over 70% then he would be almost unstoppable.

I’m not overly concerned about the TOs. His TO rates, again, aren’t’ really unreasonable when you look at other top PGs. His TO rate per 40min IS 4.0 so having half his games over that is ‘consistent’ – yet that rate is less than guys like Lin (6.0), Westbrook (4.8), Nash (4.6) and D-Will(4.5). His Assist/TO ratio (2.56) is not stellar, but well above average for full-time PGs (2.28). Jose Calderon is tops in that category at 4.68 – not, probably what we want in a PG.

Ummm…counterpoint, in your words, its okay for our 3 time all defensive brilliant defensive all star point to get burned by him 3 times in 3 weeks! You can argue with me all you want about Kyrie, I could be wrong, but I’m responding to a post about Rondo. The wildly inconsistent Rondo.

Kyrie maybe talented, but in 3 meetings in 3 weeks, 3 time all star, all defensive Rondo, should’ve shut him down once by now.
