The game was tough, hard-fought, chippy. Techs were flying, refs were going nuts (literally: blind and nuts). The Cs had a small lead of 3 points over the Knicks, around midway in the 4th. Tyson Chandler -- a 7'1", 250lb muscle-monster of a man -- had been tapping rebounds out all game long, like it was volleyball... relentless, that guy. Sully -- our designated rebound-getter -- had been trying hard all night, but had already often lost out to the taller, stronger Chandler.
Not this time. With ~7 minutes left in the game, Carmelo Anthony drives for a layup, but is met by Sully who partially blocks the shot, saving what would have been a sure 2. The rebound comes down to where Sully and Tyson are both standing, Tyson behind Sully, almost directly under the rim. There's a fierce struggle for the ball.... it falls to Sully. But Chandler is LOOMING over him, doing his beastly best to get that ball OUT Of Sully's hands. Meanwhile, in rolls JR Smith from the sideline, ALSO grabbing at the ball, also doing his best to get it away from the kid. Many would have crumbled under less pressure.
Not our boy Sully. He grabs that ball and holds it to his chest like it's his only child about to drown. He fights. He swings his body back and forth, all the while holding on tightly to that ball.
A whistle blows; the storm is over. Foul on NY. The battle is won. In a few minutes, the war would be won too.
But in those few seconds of battle, Jared Sullinger won me over. Even now, as I remember him fighting in the trenches, surrounded by the enemy... I am moved. What a great kid.
So now, there are (at least) THREE guys you can't move, Danny. Sorry. Way it goes. KG (not that you could anyway), Avery (because we fans will run you out of town if you try).... and Sully.
