A Breakdown of the Early Numbers.

I am a bit of a basketball nerd. I know this. I am also aware that I am writing this after 4 games and that kind of sample size is hardly reliable when making assessments of a team. I have however watched every minute of Celtic's basketball this season and this is my take on the product on the court so far.

The Pace

According to nba.com/stats the C's are dead last in pace. This is obviously concerning to most fans who really hope we would develop more of a running game this year. The Green are averaging 93.53 possessions per game. This is a far cry from the 76er's league leading mark of 105.41 possessions per game. Now the numbers don't lie but there is a little more to this stat. Actually watching the games really shows that the C's have tried to push the ball a fair amount. I think the bigger problem is that when there is no easy fast break opportunity for a shot they are very content to pull it out and wind up taking a shot with less than 5 seconds on the shot clock. This has been disastrous for a team that really lacks a player who can create their own shot. If they could create a few opportunities on the secondary break I believe their offensive efficiency (3rd worst in the league) would increase dramatically. They also seem to have the players to make this work. Bass, KO, Vitor and Sully can all hit a jumper as the trail big.

Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.
