Minutes Men - Celtics ran out of gas

Sam Sharpe-USA TODAY Sports

Call it an excuse if you like, but sometimes it really is as simple as that.

I joked on twitter after the triple overtime win that the team could take the rest of the week off. Perhaps they should have. We'd be a lot fresher and we'd still have the same result from the game last night. Then again, hindsight is 20/20 and it isn't always that simple.

If the team is going to fight through three overtimes to win a regular season game against the Nuggets, then they might as well fight through fatigue to try to earn a regular season win against the (in theory inferior) Bobcats. So Doc rolled the dice put his old guys on a pitch count of sorts.

Doc Rivers watching minutes for Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett - Celtics - Boston.com

Doc Rivers was faced with some interesting decisions after the 118-114 victory, a game in which Paul Pierce equaled his career high by playing 54 minutes, Kevin Garnett, age 36, logged 47 minutes, and Jason Terry played 43. With his three 30-plus-year-old veterans logging season-high minutes, Rivers decided to play them all against Charlotte but kept a keen eye on how they fared during their stints and all three were in the game down the stretch of the 94-91 loss.Pierce, Garnett, and Terry all played in the 29-minute range Monday but fatigue was obviously a factor as the Celtics shot 41.6 percent for the game and 38.5 percent in the second half.

It didn't work out but that's the breaks in the NBA. Hopefully they can get a solid win against the Bulls and plenty of rest over the All Star Break.
