NBA trade rumor: Clippers believe they can convince Kevin Garnett to waive no-trade clause

USA TODAY Sports

The latest twist and turn in the rumor madness. It won't be the last.

Kevin Garnett has stated emphatically that he will not waive his no trade clause. Of course, he also said that he wouldn't sign a contract extension back in 2007 if he was traded to Boston. The Clippers appear to be convinced that they can change his mind.

Kevin Garnett says he won't waive no-trade clause; Clippers think he'll change mind - Yahoo! Sports

Even so, the Clippers still believe they can get Garnett to accept a trade if the Celtics tell him they want to make a deal, a source told Yahoo! Sports. "If Boston came to him with the trade and he knew they wanted to do it, he would change his mind," the source said.

I think I can buy that to a point. Basically if Danny Ainge went to him and told him "look, we're sorry but we really want to go in another direction," then he might just accept that and agree to part ways. Furthermore, if they told him that they were trading Paul Pierce, Garnett would be left with few other options besides retiring. He's got that option, but it is possible that he could be swayed to go to L.A.

The Clippers hope they can convince Garnett to join them because his offseason home is in Malibu just outside Los Angeles. Garnett also is close friends with former Minnesota Timberwolves teammate Chauncey Billups, who is now in his second season with the Clippers.

We'll see though. A lot has to happen before any of this becomes reality. The teams have to agree on a package and they need to figure out where Kevin's mind is. I still put the odds at "low" but I'm starting to mentally prepare myself for ...well, just about anything.
