All quiet on the trade front: Ainge and the deadline

Via Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald, Danny Ainge elaborated on the chances of Boston making a deadline deal.

After a flurry of rumors rocked All Star Weekend, it sounds like trade talks have cooled for the Celtics' GM. Whether any of those speculative blockbusters were ever close to fruition is debatable, but word from Ainge is that we shouldn't expect anything big in the next 48 hours:

Ainge doubtful Celts can make deal

"It looks unlikely that anything will be done, other than possibly some players we will add to our roster," Ainge said. "Not sure yet of what that will be.

"There's been a lot of conversation around the league, and we've been very busy. Trades are very challenging to make, and then on top of that we like our guys. I like watching this team play, I like the personality of our team. We just need to find a way to give them the best chance to win with the resources we have."

Ainge goes on to talk about how the season-ending injuries to Rajon Rondo, Jared Sullinger, and Leandro Barbosa opened the door to possible trades. With key cogs of the roster out of the rotation, teams circled the C's like vultures, hoping to tear away a Kevin Garnett or Paul Pierce.

Two things: 1) what's surprised me about a lot of the fan fervor to make a deal is that this roster was constructed for multiple runs at a championship. Garnett, Green, Bass, Terry, and Lee all signed of at least three years. This season has certainly seen its fair share of bumps in the road, but why would the plan change halfway through season one? 2) even though Danny says the team is unlikely to make a move, we've heard that song-and-dance before. It's absolutely possible that Ainge is playing hard-to-get on Tuesday so that his cell phone blows up on Wednesday and Thursday. This isn't like the prom where the prettiest girls get snatched up right away; this is a high stakes poker game where you don't go all in until you have to. There's still a lot of time on the clock. Chris Broussard is reporting that the Hawks are interested in Eric Bledsoe and who are the Clippers interested in? KG. I floated this out in one of the forums, but a trade that looks something like this would be beneficial to all parties:

Clippers get: Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett

Hawks get: Lamar Odom, Chauncey Billups, Eric Bledsoe, draft picks

Celtics get: DeAndre Jordan, Josh Smith

For all you trade hawks out there (no pun intended), how does that wet your beaks? Odds are though, nothing like that would happen, but we all know how cold-blooded Ainge can be. He's tried to trade every member of the Big Three since 2008 and nobody saw the Kendrick Perkins trade.
