How close were the Celtics to blowing up the team? Only a select few actually know for sure.
The trade deadline is mercifully done and gone, but the rumors of what might have been keep trickling out. How close was the Kevin Garnett to the Clippers trade to happening? Who killed it, the Celtics or the Clippers? KG or Chris Paul? How close was Paul Pierce to being moved? We may never know the full details but we know conversations were had. Wyc Grousbeck confirms as much.
Celtics say offers for Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett were weak - Sports - The Boston Globe
Grousbeck said the names of Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett came up the most in trade talks. "For the last two or three days before the deadline, their names came up more than anybody else," Grousbeck said. "They were the topic of conversation with the calls coming into us, because people thought maybe we weren’t going to keep it together this spring." On why the Celtics didn’t pull the trigger, Grousbeck said, "I know what the offers were. You wouldn’t have taken them."
How much of that is spin is open to interpretation, but the bottom line is that they didn't agree upon a deal that went through. So at some point it doesn't even matter anymore.
What might be more relevant (but not something we can accurately predict at this point) is what the future holds. Will we revisit some or all of these rumors in the offseason (say around the NBA draft)? Will KG and Pierce take the decision out of the Celtics hands and hang it up for good? We'll see.
