A Look at Doc's Roster Management in the 4th Quarter vs the Grizzlies

Some people criticize Doc Rivers for his end-of-game roster management in the almost-comeback against the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night. Let's take a look at what he actually did.

Sub Time Score Players Note
1 7:50.0 76-95 White Green Pierce Williams Crawford White enters for Terry
2 7:46.0 77-95 White Randolph Green Williams Crawford Randolph probably would have entered with White if Pierce had not been shooting free throws
3 2:36.0 91-100 White Bass Green Williams Crawford Randolph has to leave the game with a bloody nose
4 0:23.3 100-104 Bass Green Pierce Crawford Terry Memphis miss, Boston timeout, shooters in
5 0:18.9 101-104 Green Pierce Williams Crawford Bradley Defense to force turnovers in, Crawford to shoot one more FT
6 0:18.5 102-105 Wilcox Bass Green Pierce Bradley Rebounding in, Memphis shooting FTs
7 0:18.5 102-106 Bass Green Pierce Crawford Terry Memphis makes FT, timeout, offense in
8 0:14.7 103-106 Bass Green Williams Crawford Bradley Defense in
9 0:12.1 104-107 Wilcox Bass Green Williams Bradley Memphis shooting FTs, rebounding in
10 0:12.1 104-108 Bass Green Pierce Crawford Terry Memphis makes FT, timeout, offense in
11 0:08.3 105-108 Green Williams Bradley Crawford Terry Defense in to either force turnover or foul
12 0:06.6 106-109 Green Pierce Bradley Crawford Terry Quick shot offense in, Memphis has one more FT
Looking at this, I believe that all of Doc's substitutions at the end of the game make sense within the context of a free-throw shooting contest with a lot of stoppages in time, bringing in players for offense/defense/rebounding at appropriate moments. I tend to think "momentum" is an overrated concept, but given the number of fouls and timeouts in the waning seconds of the game, it seems as if any sense of momentum was going to be broken anyways by the stops in the rhythm of the game. Note that Doc took Pierce out of the game as part of his offensive/defensive substitution pattern. You can argue that Randolph and White should have come in for rebounding purposes on free throws, but all of those free throws were made, followed by a timeout to bring in offense, so it didn't affect the game.

Be respectful and keep it clean. Thanks.
