After the game Friday, many of the players were asked for their reaction to Rondo's presence on the bench. Most were exactly what one might expect; great to see him back, emotional lift, etc. There were two comments though that seemed a little odd. One was from Avery Bradley.
“First of all, it was just good seeing him. I haven’t seen him in a while. But having him there on the bench with us felt good. Felt like we had our captain back, so it was a good feeling to see him.”
Isn't Paul Pierce the designated and acknowledged Captain? Much was made at the start of the season about Rondo being the new leader of the team, so it probably doesn't mean anything special. Still, the choice of terminology is curious.
The second comment I found curious was from Pierce himself.
“Definitely. It’s good to get him around the guys, to see some of his new teammates. Who knows – a lot of these guys might be here for him next year. It’s good for him to get acquainted with them."
Again it is probably nothing, but why would he choose to say "for him" instead of us? Could it have been a Freudian slip because he already knows he won't be back? Maybe it was just a simple poor choice of words.
We as fans often tend to think things that aren't there and read too much into things. Yet, with the injury to KG, it makes one wonder. Many have speculated that the foot/ ankle issue is once again being downplayed by the front office. If it is more serious than we are led to believe, KG might well decide to hang it up rather than go through a rehab at this stage of his career. Especially when he was unsure about even coming back for this season. And since most believe the two will probably retire together, whenever that might be, who knows. Maybe it was a subconscious hint.
