Have you ever watched a player and say "Man, this team would be so much better if this guy never played.", well if you have then you know how most Celtics fans feel about Brandon Bass. It's gotten to the point where I cringe everytime the ball is in his hands or he takes a shot. My faith in him is completely gone. He's been routinely outplayed by an overweight rookie and a guy coming off of open heart surgery, which begs to ask the question "Why is he still starting?"
It seems weird for me to be writing this post, especially since last season Bass was such a breath of fresh of air when Ainge traded him for Glen Davis. While I loved Glen Davis his maturity was definitely an issue and Brandon Bass' quiet demeanor while still producing was great for the team. This season has been completely different as his defense, rebounding and overall production has been dismal at best. Brandon Bass this season has been like a kid who goes to my school. Everyday this kid sits with my friends and I at lunch and never talks. He'll occasionally laugh at a joke or two but for the most part you don't really know he's there and he never really contributes much to the group. That's basically the 2012-13 season for Bass in a nutshell. You really don't know he's out there on the court most of the time but when you do is usually because something bad is happening.
Now while I don't wanna seem like I completely hate Brandon Bass it's just that he's outlived his usefulness to this team. His one redeeming quality is that he's a very good mid range jump shooter. That's it, I can't think of one other thing he does to really help this team. His rebounding is sub par for a big man, his post game is among one of the more uglier things I've ever seen and his defense is awful. Ryan Hebert on twitter gave me a quote saying that his defensive rotations were as "useless as tits on a toad" which is a perfect summation of all that he doesn’t do for this team. On defense he looks like a stubborn tourist in a foreign country who refuses to ask for directions. He’s lost and I really don’t know if he’ll ever find his way.
At this point in the season when the Celtics' are making their last push to move up in the Eastern Conference it seems prudent of Doc to put their best 5 players out on the court at much as possible and so far Bass is not one of those 5 players. Jeff Green has proved to more impactful than the floundering Bass and I’m wondering why Doc hasn’t made this adjustment yet. According to NBA.com/stats Bass has the worst +/- out of any of the Celtics’ Rotational players(-4.4) while Green sits at a +1.2.
The Growth of Jeff Green has made it easy for me and many other people to ask this question lack of a lineup change. The Offense is completely different with him out on the floor. Everything opens up since Jeff is able to score in so many ways. Bass’ one dimensional scoring ability hinders a lot of opportunities for this team and leads to a lot of scoring droughts.
I didn’t write this post to bag on Bass(maybe a little bit) but just to point out that he really just needs to not play, which in turn sounds I’m bagging on him. He’s just useless.
