I've been doing some heavy GM activities on paper tonight and came up with a pretty good one for the C's offseason.
It is done in the thinking that KG and PP are coming back.
Not sure what they can get in dealing either or if they retire. I think only in the area of $12 mill.
I'm still not 100% sure what can be done with PP's contact if we tinker (restructure with buyout...not amnesty) with it so I'm keeping it as he is coming back with his regular salary ($15+mil) intact in thinking about the cap, etc.
I think the C's best option is to sign and trade.
Utah is loaded with bigs and Al Jefferson
seems like the odd man out and I've been pining for him to be back in green. Picture him next to KG!
I'm proposing this deal:
Al Jefferson in a sign in trade to Boston for Avery Bradley
, either Jason Terry
(Utah's choice), Jordan Crawford
, Fab Melo
and Terrance Williams.
It sucks to trade Bradley but we have to trade something to get something. When it boils down to it I'd rather have a center than an undersized SG who is pretty limited offensively and will most likely ask for a hefty raise when he is a free agent after next year.
I'd rather build a foundation with a Center and PG. We will have Jeff Green
in that mix but need to hit a homerun in the 2014/15 offseason when we have a lot more money to throw at a better class of free agents. As much as I LOVE him...I don't think Bradley is the guy to build team around.
I think Utah does this. They want to get something for Al and Bradley is the prize here for them.
They only take on short term/low money contracts (that they can cut if need be) with Williams/Melo, get tradeable contracts with Terry or Lee and Crawford. They also get the guard help with this crew.
Jefferson (S&T for 12 mill) = Bradley (2.5 mill), Terry or Lee (5.2 mill), Crawford (2.1 mill), Melo (1.3 mil) and Williams (close to 1 mil)
Numbers work out perfectly. Williams is only really added to make it $12 mil....if he signed for slightly under that he could be taken out of deal.
Part 2 of my plan would include signing short term cheaper contracts.
I'd resign Shavlik Randolph
, Jason Collins
and Leandro Barbosa
. All good at their roles, know the system from last year and will come cheap.
Part 3 would be to corner a free agent shooting guard.
I'd try and sign Corey Maggette
, Rip Hamilton or Keith Bogans
who I think could be had for cheap to start at SG. .
I was thinking a reclamation project like Stephen Jackson
or Richard Jefferson
(both would behave around the C's) but not sure if they are more SF's than SG's.
You could get a Korver, Reddick or Tony Allen in a perfect world for less than they're worth but I think they may be a little too much for what the C's can offer.
Though if Utah opts for Jason Terry I'd probably start Courtney Lee at SG.
That is 12 roster spots. 13 if you include whoever C's draft. Fill in the remaining two spots (definitely another pg) with training camp invitees or cut players (ie Chinese League and the Birdmen, Rasheed's and Kenyon Martin's
of the world.....haha).
Team core would look like this:
Centers and Powerforwards (Big Men):
Al Jefferson/Jared Sullinger
I would start Al, KG, Green, Magette and Rondo
I would finish game with Pierce instead of Magette.
Lot of weapons starting and off the bench. Lots of cool, potent combinations possible.
