Hate to admit it but Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett are likely gone. Danny Ainge has to get as much as he can in return. The championship Celtics are done and we have to built another title contender. There are just a few ways to perform that but I believe tanking is not one of them, at least for the C's.
Tanking next season would represent a lost year for our only true all-star left, Rajon Rondo, right in the prime of his career. Rondo is one of the best point guards in the league and able to create chances to score for nearly anyone. He can dish out 11 dimes a game and that alone can get you plenty of wins in the NBA, so why waste it for a chance to get blessed with Andrew Wiggins in the 2014 draft? Is there any guarantee that he is to become the next LeBron James. Hardly I would say. Even without Pierce and Garnett this is not a lottery team and is just a few pieces away from being a serious playoff lock. Ainge would have to unload some of our better players just to make the team look bad because I can't believe Rondo is taking half of the season off, he is a winner, a proven one. Who is going to eat Jason Terry's or Brandon Bass' contract and give something worthy back? Are we just ready to send Sully or Bradley away just to get more trade assets?
The Celtics are not in a bad position even if they can't sign a max player in this free agency. But Pierce and Garnett could leave some valuable pieces for the next years that, added to what we already have and will have in the draft, could become a nice picture. Title teams are built out of special players. Rondo is one of them when he is motivated. Just bring somebody able to work with him and continue to develope the huge talent he has. The rest is easier because if any player can score a bucket he will find him. Some of our players struggle this past season because Doc Rivers' offence does not consist of uncontested threes. Rondo could thrill playing under a system like the Rockets'. Courtney Lee and Avery Bradley are two different players. The former is a far better shooter but both struggled mightly last season. They could become deadly shooting wide open corner threes with Rondo making his way to the rim.
We have enough talent not to be as bad as a lottery team and we will have flexibility to reload for Rondo. Sullinger, Bradley, Lee, Green. They're all young and proven players. Melo, the draft picks. Not bad at all, isn't it? Of course we are some steps away from being in any serious title talk but tanking could be a horrible way to follow after this exciting season with Rivers and the big three. The deals to make are minor ones, such as a backup point guard
like Jordan Crawford, a center and another reliable shooter. Boston is still a very nice destination for free agents and we should have more space moving forward after unloading Terry's or Bass' contracts, even I was very impressed with the way Brandon guarded Melo in the first round of the playoffs.
Boston is trophy town. The Celtics have 17 championships and are the most prideful team in America. It is time to act like that.
