Celtics will consider Jay Larranaga as head coach

Greg M. Cooper-US PRESSWIRE

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports is reporting that assistant coach Jay Larranaga is under consideration as the Boston's bench boss.

With speculative favorite Brian Shaw off to Denver, there's a chance that Danny Ainge may not look too far to replace Doc Rivers:

Celtics will consider assistant Jay Larranaga, other youthful candidates, for head-coaching job

After two seasons as a head coach in the NBA Development League, Larranaga, 38, made a strong impression on coach Doc Rivers and the Celtics' front office during the 2012-13 season.

Larranaga will coach the Celtics' summer league entry in Orlando, allowing general manager Danny Ainge a better look at him.

Larranaga just turned 37 and has spent much of his coaching career developing young talent and has spent time abroad as a player and a coach. He may not be the sexiest pick right now, but with the game moving to a more Euro, small ball style, maybe he's the guy for the job. With Doc's assistants joining him in the exodus to Staples Center, he's the only guy under contract for the off season right now.

The C's will use summer league as an audition with Jason Terry in tow. I'll say this: if Fab Melo can come out of Orlando as a legit option in next year's rotation, I'm all for Larranaga heading up this rebuilding process.
