Before I get into it, I just want to make it clear that I am not in favor of tanking and I'm not for trading Rondo in order to tank. I think this team can be decent and that the real lottery gold will come from a collapsing Nets team in the next few years.
For the record, I define tanking as getting rid of guys in order to not give your team the best chance to win games because whoever you put out there will try to win the games, so in order to truly tank, you need to put bad players on the court.
I am open to trading Rondo for the right pieces, but I am not for trading the guy just to get some picks and some salary relief. However, this post is not about trading Rondo as much as it is about HAVING TO TRADE Rondo if the goal is to be bad enough to make the lottery and get a high pick.
A guy like Rondo, with his ego and intellect, is likely to be perfectly willing to take on a bigger scoring and leadership role now that he is "the man" on this team. Given that Rondo is a "true" PG, I also believe he will relish getting points for Olynyck, Sullinger, and Green through his assists just as much as if he were scoring points for himself.
A guy like Rondo will absolutely make his teammates better provided they are good enough to get into the right positions in the first place. I have no doubt that guys like Sullinger, Olynyck, and Green will be very capable of scoring well on many nights with a PG like Rondo to pass them the ball. Rondo has his shortcomings, but passing is not one of them, and leadership isn't either. He is always willing to take the challenge.
He makes all these new guys way better than they would be without him, and I think Ainge and Stevens know it. He cannot do it all by himself, but I have not seen anything in Rondo that would lead me to believe that he won't will this current team into the playoffs.
Therefore, if this team wants to get in the lottery, they would have to trade Rondo.
