The Boston Globe reports that the radio station WEEI will no longer broadcast Boston Celtics games next season. Here is an excerpt from Chad Finn's article explaining how this came to be:
Celtics will no longer air on WEEI - Touching All the Bases - Boston.com
Entercom Communications, whose WRKO and WEEI stations in the Boston markets have been the radio home for the Boston Celtics since 2005, will no longer broadcast the storied NBA franchise's games beginning next season.
"WEEI has had an incredible run with the Boston Celtics, from being a part of their 17th championship banner to the end of the Big 3 era," said Entercom Boston vice president/market manager Jeff Brown in a statement.
"Unfortunately we were unable to come to terms on a new contract moving forward. We thank the entire Celtics organization for our tremendous time together and wish them the best of luck in the future."
The Globe goes on to state that it's uncertain at this time which station will carry Celtics games next season. My initial thought was that 98.5 The Sports Hub would sign on with the C's, but then I realized that they also carry the Boston Bruins. Taking on the Celts would create a lot of scheduling conflicts that I'm sure they don't want to take on.
I don't listen to the radio broadcast too often, but I really hope that announcers Sean Grande and Cedric Maxwell are retained at the new station. Every time I listen to them I feel like I learn something insightful about the game of basketball. And at the least, Grande and Max are a very entertaining duo that keep me laughing during a broadcast.
