Boston Celtics 2013 Media Day: The Garden Report

Rondo's got a new best friend and Jeff Green is cursing at Jared, just another Garden Report...

Is Gerald Wallace happy to be here?

His words say one thing, his actions might indicate otherwise.

Jared Sullinger is "full go" but "not close"

The back is fixed but he's not back to full speed. Still, it must be nice to be back on the court instead of in the court. Ok I'll stop the puns.

Rajon Rondo & Brad Stevens: Best Friends Forever

During Celtics Media Day, Rajon Rondo discussed his relationship with Brad Stevens, what he's been doing this summer, and when he hopes to return this season.

Celtics.com talks with MarShon Brooks

  • What do you bring to this team, MarShon Brooks?  "Energy and...SCORING."  Also thinks he's an underrated passer.
  • Buzzwords in Brooks' interview: "confidence" and "hard work."  For a guy that's known for his scoring, he actually seemed pretty humble.  I've got a hunch that in his talks with Stevens, he knows he's going to have a pretty good chance to shine on this team and play an integral part in the rebuild.  Success in the NBA is equal parts talent and hark work but what people don't talk about is opportunity.  This seems like a great position for Brooks to be in.

Celtics.com talks with Kelly Olynyk

  • Olynyk has spent a lot of time immersing himself in the city because he sees Boston as his new "home."  Driving is an issue, but he's becoming familiar with the train system.
  • Olynyk has never got his haircut in the U.S.
  • Plantar fasciitis has subsided.  Should be ready for training camp.

Celtics.com talks with Jeff Green and Brandon Bass

  • Jeff Green: having shooting bigs like Bass, Olynyk, and Sullinger helps open up driving lanes for him.
  • I love Brandon Bass.  When asked if the doubters and haters out there motivate him, he said that he's more self-motivated than anything else.  He wants to prove to himself, not others, that this team can win a championship.
  • Green will not compete in dunk contest.  He's more of a "in game dunker."
  • If you didn't catch the story of Brandon Bass and swimming with the Boys & Girls Club of Boston, check out the link.
  • How excited is BB about Rondo's return? "Very excited.  All those passes that Kevin got last year..."

Celtics.com talks with Lee and Bogans

  • Courtney Lee has known Brad Stevens for over ten years.  Both are Indianapolis guys.
  • Lee admits to being "inconsistent" last season.  He worked on ball-handling and shooting this summer and looks to be more of a vocal leader this year.
  • In a dunk contest, Lee says he'd beat out Avery Bradley and Jeff Green.
  • Keith Bogans dropped twenty pounds before coming to training camp; "I'm a 33-year-old chasing down 21-year-old now."
  • Bogans says that Paul Pierce is one of the toughest covers in the league.  Puts Jordan Crawford and MarShon Brooks on that list, too.

Celtics.com talks with Kris Humphries, Rajon Rondo

  • Per Humphries, there's a tote board in the locker room on who would win in a fight: Rondo or Humphries? They're tied right now.
  • This is the earliest that Hump has been back before training camp.  He wanted to be part of Celtics' winning culture as soon as possible.
  • Humphries highlights the athleticism and versatility of the roster.  Talked a lot about the team getting out and running and hitting the offensive glass.  That's a big departure from Doc Rivers' system and philosophy.
  • Rondo did not talk to Derrick Rose at all about rehab.
  • Rondo claims he's "right on schedule," whatever that means...
  • Rondo sees himself (along with Bogans, Green, and Bass) as the leaders of the team, but also saw himself as a leader even when Pierce and Garnett were here.  "I've been the point guard of the team for the last seven years."
  • What did he learn from Pierce and KG in terms of leadership?  "Hard work speaks for itself.  Talk is cheap."

Celtics.com with Bradley, Wallace, and Sullinger

  • Avery Bradley calls Brad Stevens a "basketball junkie."  He's the second person to say that about their new head coach.
  • Lots of sports cliches from Gerald Wallace: "backs against the wall," "you can only go up from here," etc.  I'm really hoping this guy doesn't come in with this kind of lackadaisical attitude.  Crash was an All Star a few years ago and used to be a hard hat, blue collar player.  That's pure Celtics.  Bring it, Gerald.
  • Wallace looks forward to playing with Rondo.  Loves his style/attitude.
  • Jared Sullinger has been cleared for full contact since mid-August.  His bulging disc was giving him problems on the right side of his body and that's gone now.
  • Sully, like pretty much everybody at Media Day, envisions the Celtics as a fast, athletic team.
  • Sully refers to his rookie season as a year in "Garnett University."  Awesome.
  • Sully speaks high of Kelly Olynyk.

Stevens talks versatility, defensive toughness

All good stuff from Coach Stevens. Just like he did at Butler, expect a lot of smaller lineups with skilled bigs playing in the high post and wings spreading the floor.  We'll take a look at that later this week on CelticsBlog.com.

Pressey and Crawford talk with Celtics.com

  • It wasn't the Steeziest of interviews, but Jordan Crawford mentioned how much he loves Kelly Olynyk's game.
  • Even though he wasn't drafted, Pressey talked about how much Danny Ainge believed in him and when he was a unrestricted free agent, the Celtics were the only team he really considered.
  • Pressey respects Brad Stevens' knowledge of the game.
  • He's talked about it before, but Pressey is really impressed with MarShon Brooks' one-on-one game.  For a guy that was pretty much an after thought in the big trade, he might be the biggest piece going forward.  Just my opinion, but I see a lot of mini-Kobe in Brooks.  It's all just a matter of attitude and work ethic now.

Celtics.com talk with Danny Ainge

Highlights:

  • Reiterated that he doesn't think Rajon Rondo won't be back for the start of the season.
  • Loves how well Brad Stevens' teams execute.  High IQ, a worker.
  • Very excited about coaching staff, specifically pointed Ron Adams and Jay Larranaga.
  • A captain has not been selected, but Ainge spoke highly of Rondo, Avery Bradley, and Gerald Wallace.
  • If Jeff Green is going to make the jump, Ainge believes that he needs to be more consistent on defense and on the boards.
